Bush Walk to Fairy Falls, Waitakere Ranges Regional Park (1 of 2)
Fairy Falls is a multi-tiered cascade deep in the Waitakere Range west of Auckland. The hike to this waterfall was that it passed through a grove of Kauri trees, which are giant white-barked trees that are kind of analogous to New Zealand. The waterfalls are several tumbling tiers up top with a few smaller plunges in between before one final large slanting drop at its base.
The hike requires a little bit of physical exertion. There are a number of stairs going down beside the Falls so as you can imagine, you need to go back up the stairs on the way back, so bring along a drink bottle.
All in all, it is a fine way to spend a couple of hours while day touring out of New Zealand's largest city.

Arataki Visitor Centre, Waitakere Ranges Regional Park
Arataki Visitor Centre is the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional
Park. Talk to the expert park staff and get their recommendations on
track conditions, weather or tides.
You can pick up an information brochure or track map to help you find
your way around the park; book a campsite or lodge accommodation;
find out how you can become a volunteer and have fun while you help
to protect and enhance the Waitakere Ranges; and pick up information
on any of Auckland's 26 regional parks managed by the Auckland
Council.
In this video, we take a walk along Slip Track and we look around the
tree identification trail.
Sit back and relax as we take you on this journey.

Spragg Bush Walk in Waitakere Ranges (2 of 2)
On a stunning Sunday afternoon I went for a drive and ended up at Spragg Bush Walk, a short 15 to 20 minute walk (each way), between Scenic Drive and Turanga Road. One point to note: 'The Barefoot Photographer' says, "Wear shoes!" Sure, there are a few areas where its easy to walk on, but the majority of the track is extremely stony so I would strongly advise wearing shoes.
From the picnic area at the junction of Scenic Drive and Mountain Road, a gentle graded walk leads past the historic cemetery to a large kauri; then continues down gentle grade and crosses a small stream to rejoin Scenic Drive, 500m north of the picnic area (15 minutes). Two branch tracks link this walk with Turanga Road. The first branch is on the right 30m before the large kauri and meets Turanga Road on its first bend (5 minutes); the second, 200m beyond the large kauri, continues downhill to meet a small stream and emerges at the end of Turanga Road (10 minutes).
On the way home I drove further along Scenic Drive and pulled in to Parkinson's Lookout and got a great view of Auckland city across the low plains and river inlets.

Kokako Release, Waitakere Ranges, May 2010_4min.mov
In May 2010, we released two endangered kokako into the Waitakere ranges, near Auckland, NZ. The two kokako joined two others that were released into our jointly-run 2000 hectare park. Kokako disappeared from the Waitakere ranges in the 1960s due to predation, however there are a number of efforts to bring them back to the mainland.

Fleeting (typical) glimpses of Kokako in the Waitakere ranges
During field work with Kokako (Callaeas cinereus), this is the standard view of the bird that we would get. When we were lucky. One of the most elusive birds I have ever worked with. If you want to see these birds in the Waitakeres prepare yourself for seeing only glimpses like this very sporadically.

Te Toiokawharu - Waitakere Ranges
Despite many attempts this is a peak that has alluded both Mel and Ashley. Whether through running out of time, or navigational problems, they just haven't got there. Claire suggested we give up a pretty easy Sunday run to carve up this very rough track. This time we all suceeded even if Claire now hates the circuit after coming to grief on a slippery boardwalk on Huia Ridge!!

Caving Stuff Omanawanui and Waitakere Ranges
Scott Hampton, Alastair, Grace Lynne, Taylor, Matt Jones, and about 60 other trampers went to Waitakere ranges, found some caves and some black sand beaches. We had a sweet tyime on the 8 hour hike. It started with a sketch 40 year old Land Rover with no safety bags, no speedometer, and very minimalist safety gear. It ended with some ridge-line runs overlooking the ocean. Sweet stuff. Worth doing again.
