Is Morocco on the brink of another protest after disputed election results?-Africa Today-12-13-2011
www.presstv.ir People in Morocco have taken to the streets again to denounce Friday's general elections that brought to power the head of the Justice and Development Party (PJD). Protesters chanted slogans, condemning the elections and the results. They insisted that the polls were a complete farce. Results show the PJD, the country's main Islamic party, has won 107 seats in the 395-seat parliament. The parliamentary elections were brought forward one year in response to a wave of protests in the country. The US-backed Moroccan government claimed that 45 percent of registered voters participated in the elections. A majority of eligible voters boycotted the poll, saying the ruling monarchy's reforms were not sufficient.

Moroccan Judges, Lawyers Demand Judicial Reform: Judiciary Too Controlled by Government, Royals
Judges, lawyers and court workers in morocco are campaigning to free the county's judiciary from external influence. Over half of judges have signed a petition calling for judicial reform and campaigners wore red armbands over their court robes to highlight their cause. A year ago, such a protest would have landed judges in a great deal of trouble, but lawyers and justice ministers are backing the campaign. The Moroccan government and the Royal family are seen to have inordinate power over the judiciary through their control of salaries and promotions and it is believed that many verdicts follow the will of the executive branch. So far, however Morocco has not seen the kinds of violence that has rocked the region during the Arab Spring and last year a new constitution was promoted by the King in order to head-off large scale protests. The red armbands seem to show that these reforms did not go far enough and the may signify the determination of the Moroccan people for greater social and political freedom.

Moroccan Americans Appeal for Action
Following the media storm around Western Sahara Separatist, Aminatou Haidar, a group of Moroccan Americans, friends of Morocco that are not affiliated with any particular organization or association issued a petition on the Western Sahara conflict and its roots.
The petition emphasizes the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, denies the misleading information circulated by the "Polisario Front" and its supporters, and seeks to reach out to the Moroccan Sahraoui people and help them return back home to Morocco.
The petition is asking Moroccan Americans community members, friends of Morocco and freedom defenders to spread the word and inform national and international public opinions, and join the upcoming demonstration at the Nation's Capital, Washington DC, and add their names in support of the petition

Appeal For A Manifestation
In the light of some recent events that attack the sovereignty and the security of our country, We, Moroccans living abroad and friends of Morocco, want to call the attention of the American and international public opinion on the following:
· The deplorable situation happening in the Tindouf camps in Eastern Algeria. We recall that representatives of International NGO s have repeatedly denounced the massive violations of human rights committed in the Polisario camps calling the international community to intervene to stop the siege imposed on the Moroccan Saharaouis and stress on their return to their home country Morocco.
· We unanimously support the Moroccan Autonomy Plan endorsed by the International Community and which adheres the international norms and involves an advanced regionalization within good governance and a good democracy.
· We vehemently deplore any media manipulation impeding the negotiations to mutual agreements between Morocco and the Polisario.
· We recall that the setup of "The Equity and Reconciliation Commission “ (IER) in 2004, “The Consultative Council of Human Rights” (CCHR), and the rehabilitation and the compensation offered to anyone who suffered from previous human rights violations constitute an unprecedented initiative that was hailed internationally as a big step forward in the advancement of human rights in Morocco.

Moroccans clash with Polisario in Washington
Hoping for a low profile for the RFK HR Award for Aminatou Hiadar does not necessarily make make it so.
Kerry Kennedy, the daughter of the late Robert Kennedy and the founder of the RFK center for Justice & Human Rights introduced Aminatou Haidar and presented her with the Award. Ms Kerry Kennedy was very biased in her description of the situation in Morocco's Southern provinces and presented an Anti-morocco narrative to the audience. She described morocco as if it was the apartheid regime in South Africa or the Pol Pot Regime in Cambodia. Her introduction was very biased against Morocco and she promised to help Aminatou Haidar in the future to reach her objective.
This was followed by Senator Patrick Leah, Democrat of Vermont who declared "It is important to recognize and commend the Government of Morocco for its recent efforts to protect human rights. Morocco has become a party to
most of the major human rights treaties. It is also a valued friend and ally of the United States. It is now time for Morocco to fulfill its treaty obligations to uphold the civil and political rights of the Sahrawi people"
In her speech, Aminatou Haidar used her unfortunate experience as a selling point to advance Polisario's political aim of full independence and she thanked Algerian President Boutefliqa "for all the help to the Sahrawi People" in a declaration to the large contingent of Algerian Media following her award. Morocco's official media, beside a lone MAP reporter, was not present.
There were very few independent Moroccan Activists in the premises who distributed literature to explain the Moroccan position and try to contact some key people. But Mouloud Said, the Polisario representative in Washington, D.C. was acting as a head of ceremonies and also as a gate keeper, he was stopping the Moroccan activists from approaching the RFK widow, Ethel Kennedy. He was also directing the US senate Capitol Police to keep away all those that he thinks are pro-Morocco From talking to any dignitaries. The Head of the polisario in washington telling the US Capitol police what to do!
the Polisario Representative, Mouloud Said, feeling empowered, called one Pro- Moroccan Activist a "barking Dog" which precipitated a short give and take between the two camps.
This performance showcased, in no uncertain terms, the extent of the Polisario's influence in congress. It was able to weave relationships with low, mid & high level congress staffers and develop that relationship and exploit it to advance its cause. They often find a receptive ear for to their " underdog & repressed people" narrative.
The only organized Moroccan action was represented in a small group of Sahrawi women -probably brought at a great expense from El ayoun, Morocco- standing under the rain at some distance from the building carrying few banners. they were so far away from the action that the few pedestrians walking by were puzzled by their presence.
Investing some effort and energy to bring about a hundred people with a pro Moroccan message would have brought an alternative message to the one presented by polisario in the US senate that day.

Council Moroccan Community abroad Prez. 1
Some of the associations leaders that are not happy with council have personal interests!
* Some of these people want to be representatives in the parliament! * The biggest challenge is to have Moroccan Communities active in Morocco and fully integrated in their host countries.
* How can we communicate with the community in the US?, It is a large continent!
* The council does not represent the Moroccan communities per say. * The government has several channels of communications with Moroccans abroad. * The council is ready to tackle the big issue of political representation with input from the community.

Moroccans Support Palestine, Not Ties with Israel
Several NGOs and human rights groups demonstrated in central Rabat on Wednesday evening, September 9th, against Israeli policies in Palestinian territories. Organizers say they support Palestinians, but not policies like the siege imposed by Israel on the Gaza strip. They are also calling for the Moroccan government not to normalize ties with Israel. The Moroccan NGOs say Washington is putting pressure on some moderate Arab States, including Morocco, to resume ties with Israel. [Mohammed Benjelloun Andaloussi, Chairman of Palestinian Support Group]: "This demonstration is the introduction of a continuous Moroccan struggle to stop the pressure that might be put on the Arab governments, including the Moroccan one. We consider that Morocco, which has shown political courage and strong belief in the Palestinian cause, will not be deceived by all this nonsense. Demonstrators chanted slogans in support of Palestinians, calling for an end to Israeli occupation and settlement construction, and for ending the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip. [Khalid Sefiani, Chairman of Iraqi and Palestinian Support Coaltion]: "Morocco believes that the Palestinian cause is the cause of the whole nation. If this is how we, who are far away, feel, then you can imagine how those who are close (to the Palestinian territories) feel. Moroccans are convinced that Palestine is part of them and that its problems are part and parcel of its problems too because the Zionist project is not targeting Palestine ...
