Flooding On The Texas Coast: How To Be Prepared
When you think of weather in Texas, you usually think of hot, dry air, maybe a thunderstorm or two rolling across the flatlands there, perhaps even a tornado touching down if there’s extreme weather. But people forget that there’s almost an entire side of Texas that’s coastline, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico. The Texas coastline and even cities inland have experienced flooding from hurricanes and heavy rainfall because once the ground is saturated, the excess water becomes runoff and has nowhere to go. Towns like Corpus Christi and Rio Grande Valley have reported astonishing amounts of rainfall in short periods of time (7 inches in 24 hours!).
If tropical storms and heavy rain are in the future for the coast of Texas, citizens should be concerned and take action. Being prepared is critical and plenty of options are available. While some security systems offer flood and water detection in your home, there are also easy tips you can do as a homeowner to help protect your family and home or know how to quickly and safely escape if waters become too much to handle. Get ideas here: Securitychoice.com for flood detection and home security.
Preparation begins at home by compiling a survival kit with necessary items in case a flood hits or you need to escape one. First aid items, water, non-perishable food items, flashlights, rope/cord/bungees and other safety equipment are a good place to start. Having a radio with batteries and a backup stash will also come in handy of the power goes out and you need to stay in touch with the local news and weather reports. If you have pets, be sure to include their food and water supply in addition to any medications they may need. It’s also a good idea to know which evacuation shelters allow pets and the closest ones to your home if you find that you’ll need to evacuate your home.
