September 11, 1988 NFL Live (NFL on NBC Pregame Show) Part 1 with commercials.wmv
(c)1988 NFL; NBC Universal Another repeat. First is a brief WAVY ID touting one of their Virginia Associated Press Award wins (most of these are on some tapes with WAVY footage from the early part of 1988). Then we see the NBC Sports Olympic ID (more on that later); then the "Great Games, Great Moments" segment of the NFL Live! intro (featuring the Miami/NY Jets AFC Championship Game; Philadelphia/Oakland in Super Bowl XV; and Denver/San Diego from a 1985 regular season match) prior to leading into the studio shot. But instead of Bob Costas, the first face we see is Bob's NBC pregame predecessor, longtime WNBC sports director Len Berman (Costas, along with regular pregame co-host Ahmad Rashad and contributor Gayle Gardner as well as most of NBC's top-tier play-by-play men were on their way to South Korea) and are replaced by Paul Maguire (who split his time between the #2 NBC crew {normally alongside rising star Marv Albert} and the pregame show that year) and Gayle Sierens (more on her in part two). The top story on this broadcast is the drug situation in the NFL that led to the suspensions of 16 players (most notably, New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor; but also several San Francisco 49ers including eventual Super Bowl XXIII hero John Taylor). This segment includes an interview by NBC/Sports illustrated contributor Frank Deford with NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle; followed by a previously-taped interview between Berman and Chicago Bears defensive end/Super Bowl ...

1995 NFL on NBC Pregame Show (Week 8 -- Part 1).wmv
(c)1995 NFL; NBC Universal You asked for it, you got it. The return of the NFL on NBC pregame show for Week 8 of the 1995 season. First is the appearance of the ENTIRE pregame crew of Greg Gumbel, Ahmad Rashad, Mike Ditka, Joe Gibbs AND a rare appearance by Joe Montana. Greg begins with the story of the Chicago Bears/Houston Oilers match; with a report by Bob Trumpy (newly demoted after 3 seasons on the top crew opposite Dick Enberg; found himself displaced from his normal spot opposite Tom Hammond to working this game with usually lower-ranked Dan Hicks) with the arrival of rookie Rashaan Salaam and the amazing season by Erik Kramer in his first year in Chicago (and before the injuries piled up). Next is Miami vs. New York Jets (the game following this). Cris Collinsworth (teamed with Tom Hammond for this game; more details on intro) reports on the injuries piling up on Miami (most notably Dan Marino; though Marino was seen warming up in an attempt to play) as well as the Dolphins dropping two straight coming in after starting 4-0. Following this is Indianapolis vs. Oakland; where Raider quarterback Jeff Hostetler was ruled out after getting a cheap shot courtesy of Denver Broncos linebacker Dave Wyman during the previous week's Monday Night matchup. Ahmad Rashad makes his first showing to tease a story on the Denver/Kansas City match where rookie analyst Phil Simms reports on the weather; which had rapidly shifted from sunny and mid-70s on Friday and Saturday to 36 ...

1995 NFL on NBC Halftime Report (Week 5).wmv
(c)1995 NFL/NBC Universal Week 5's Domino's Pizza NFL on NBC halftime report for the early games (only have a brief snippet of the Steelers/Chargers game that aired later that afternoon). SCORES (Finals and comments) Dolphins 13, Bengals 10 (Miami won 26-23; there was a controversial call late in the game in which Bengals WR Carl Pickens was ruled to have stepped out of bounds prior to a catch that would have put Cincy deep in Miami territory during a drive for a potential game-winning touchdown) Redskins 20, Cowboys 10 (Norv Turner's crew won 27-23 after knocking Troy Aikman out of the game with a strained calf muscle) Colts 14, Rams 10 (Colts hand the newly-relocated Rams their first loss of season 21-18) Falcons 17, Patriots 7 (Atlanta wins 30-17) Buccaneers 13, Panthers 7 (20-13 triumph for Tampa Bay) Eagles 6, Saints 3 (Philly won 15-10) And with the baseball playoffs looming, we get a bonus score; as the New York Yankees lead the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0 in the 3rd inning (Yankees would win 6-1 for the first American League wild-card slot as well as that team's first postseason trip since 1981). Following a break featuring an NBC promo for the movie "In the Line of Duty", an Advance Auto Parts spot, Nu-Home TV and Furniture (as mentioned elsewhere, it seemed like WAVY loved running these ads during the halftime report) and WAVY plugging the Montel Williams show (which it purloined from WVEC a year earlier); we get a rare (as far as I know, it was rare) halftime edition ...

1988 NFL on NBC Game Intro (Week 2 -- Pittsburgh at Washington).wmv
(c)1988 NFL/NBC--Comcast/WAVY--LIN Media Group (ID at start) Starting off is the NFL on NBC game intro since 1988 (produced by the since-defunct Cranston Csuri graphics firm; which had originated the piece in 1985 and updated to incorporate the current peacock) for the main early game between the defending champion Washington Redskins (coming off a disastrous loss to the New York Giants on Monday Night) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (who started 1988 off with a victory over Dallas). As for the commentators, with (as mentioned in my NFL Live uploads from this date) Dick Enberg and most of the high-ranked NBC broadcast crew on the way to Seoul, South Korea for the 1988 Games; Merlin Olsen gets reunited with his first broadcast partner, former NBC #1 broadcaster Curt Gowdy (the first NFL action that the Cowboy would be calling since leaving CBS {where he arrived in 1979 after exiting NBC after Super Bowl XIII} in 1981). As for the game and its aftermath, the Redskins would win a shootout 30-29. However, this would prove a disappointing season for both teams. Pittsburgh's loss would spark a 6-game losing streak which (combined with a 4-game losing streak later in the season) led to the Steelers crashing to 5-11 (a record which is STILL the worst finish for Pittsburgh since Chuck Noll's 1-13 debut season of 1969). Washington, however, would become the 2nd defending champion in a row (behind the Giants) not to make the playoffs the following season, finishing 7-9; which marked ...

1995 NFL on NBC Pregame Show -- Part 1 (Week 5).wmv
(c)1995 NFL/NBC Universal The 1995 NFL on NBC pregame show for Week 5 of the 1995 season (repeat of sorts, in that unlike previous uploads; this includes commercials and is the ENTIRE pregame show). The big games for Week 5 were what was dubbed Shula Bowl II (Don's Dolphins; who at 4-0 were the lone undefeated team left in the AFC coming in; vs. Dave's Bengals). The other major game NBC was promoting was the late game between the defending AFC champion San Diego Chargers vs. the slumping Pittsburgh Steelers in a rematch of the previous season's AFC title matchup. Hosting are Greg Gumbel, Mike Ditka and Joe Gibbs (no Montana this time) with Ahmad Rashad joining later. The first story is a report on the Dolphins by Bob Trumpy and Tom Hammond; followed by a piece on the "human interest"/father-son angle with both Don and Dave being interviewed. This is followed by Ahmad introducing a piece on the Patriots/Falcons game where Boston Globe sportswriter/New England Patriots game sideline reporter Will McDonough along with Marv Albert and Cris Collinsworth discuss the main story of that game (Scott Zolak replacing injured Drew Bledsoe; who still had an outside shot at playing), followed by a tease with an interview with Pittsburgh's Bill Cowher. Commercials are for: GTE (man rushing back and forth to store to buy some snacks for his pregnant wife); a local Lennox Heating and Air Conditioning spot, Northwestern Mutual Life (the Quiet Company) and Old Spice.

1995-1997 NFL on NBC theme music (Longer and higher quality version)
This is the theme music that NBC used for their final 3 seasons of NFL telecasts when they had the AFC package. It is one of my favorite sports themes ever. I used Blaze Media Pro to capture this sound recording from NBC Sunday Night Football Extra online. This theme was played on NBC Sunday night Football Extra online most Sunday Nights prior to the start of the football game. Here is a link to rapidshare where I uploaded an MP3 of this theme. It should be a little bit louder and slightly higher quality as I think some noise and a tiny bit of quality was lost after the youtube conversion. rapidshare.com Enjoy!

AFC Divisional matchup between the Dolphins and the Steelers, Griese vs Bradshaw, Shula vs Noll. The great Don Criqui on the mic with John Brodie, Don Criqui was brought in by NBC from CBS during the "Curt Gowdy Revolution", Curt Gowdy went to CBS after Superbowl XIII and Jim Simpson, the #2 PBP man, left during the 79 season to go to ESPN!! Hmm...tough stuff. Also notice a marching band version of the "Just Turn Away" disco theme. I OWN NOTHING!! EVERYTHING BELONGS TO NBC/NFL/COMCAST AND ONLY THEM!!!

(c)1995 WAVY-LIN Media Group (ID at beginning); NFL; NBC Universal Begins with WAVY-TV 10 ID (around the time that station began using the "On Your Side" branding full-time), then the NFL on NBC intro for the Miami Dolphins-New York Jets game in Week 8; marking the 2nd meeting (behind the Week 1 game) as well as the first trip to the Meadowlands since the "fake spike" game the previous season. The Dolphins were coming in off a 3-game skid after starting 4-0; while the Jets (still swooning from the fake spike) came in at 1-6 and just off an embarrasing loss to the expansion Carolina Panthers. Calling the game were Tom Hammond and Cris Collinsworth. This was an interesting assignment as Collinsworth (the #2 analyst) was teamed with Tom Hammond (usually a middle-of-the-pack guy) in lieu of usual broadcast partner Marv Albert being sent to (according to a response to a question I posed on the 506 Broadcasting Forums) the McDonald's All-American game in preparation for his lead role with the NBA on NBC. This led to Dan Hicks (better known either for golf coverage and/or being the husband of then-NBC sideline reporter Hannah Storm) getting moved up for the Oilers/Bears game with Bob Trumpy. NBC must have noticed the two gelled fairly well; considering that these two would work the early wild-card game for NBC's first three seasons with the current Sunday Night Football/Football Night in America era.

1997 NFL on NBC Intro (DEN vs. JAX -- 1996 AFC Divisional Playoff).wmv
(c)1997 National Football League; NBC Universal This is the intro for the 1996 AFC Divisional playoff between the #5 seeded Jacksonville Jaguars (one year removed from expansion) and the top-seeded Denver Broncos in one of the most thrilling playoff games ever (when it appeared in the NFL's Greatest Games series; it would be dubbed "Ambush at Mile High"). This is the only 1996 NFL on NBC intro I have discovered. Jacksonville would go on to win 30-27 to hand what (in the America's Game on the 1997 Denver Broncos) John Elway would consider the most frustrating loss in his career. NOTES: 1. This would be the only loss for the Denver Broncos at Mile High during the 1996 season. 2. This would (famously) be the last game that the "Orange Crush" uniforms were worn as the regular unis (Denver would switch to their current uniforms the following season; only bringing the Orange Crush version back for a 2001 Thanksgiving match with Dallas). 3. This was the final game officiated by Red "First DOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNN" Cashion. ANNOUNCERS: Dick Enberg, Paul Maguire, Phil Simms SIDELINE REPORTERS: Jim Gray, Beasley Reece (normally the analyst opposite Don Criqui at this point)

(c)1995 NFL/NBC Universal/WAVY--LIN Media Group Here is the NFL on NBC game intro for Shula Bowl II between the Cincinnati Bengals (Dave Shula) and the Miami Dolphins (Don Shula) at Riverfront Stadium (last season before the Cinergy Field name got pasted on). This would be the second (and last with Don's retirement after the season and Dave being dumped early in the 1996 season) of these father-son duels, which the Dolphins squeaked out 26-23. Calling this game are Tom Hammond and Bob Trumpy. Preceding is a promo for the Real Stories of the Highway Patrol airings on WAVY-TV in Portsmouth

The New Water Sports:
Totalitarian Aesthetics, Pride and the Cleansing of Queer Identity in Noam Gonick’s No Safe Words.
By Francisco-Fernando Granados
Noam Gonick’s No Safe Words is a multi-channel video installation that expands on a short film originally shown in large outdoor screens during the 2008 Toronto Pride Parade. The short film is contextualized by footage documenting the parade and the prominent participation of police forces in the festivities. Queer and politicized, the piece operates at the uncomfortable juncture where oppressive state apparatuses meet public expressions of non-normative sexuality. Appropriating the conventions and venues of mass media, Gonick uses contemporary and historical references to draw a link between the politics of totalitarianism and the aesthetics of sexual power-play that coincide in current North American culture. No Safe Words makes visible a kind of late capitalist gay identity that seeks to un-queer itself, obscuring the history of struggle for gay rights and creating a problematic dynamic that allows some queer bodies to pass as normative and achieve privileges while leaving oppressive hierarchical structures intact.
Gonick utilizes the aesthetics and channels of mass media to intervene in the logic of popular visual culture. No Safe Words recalls Sunday Night Football promotional spots, putting together electric guitar-driven music, animated commentary, popping captions and action shots commonly featured in sports advertising. But the conventions and the logic end there. The players are called “fudge packers.” Instead of famous NFL giants like Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson, the stars featured here are Adolf Hitler and Augusto Pinochet. The teams in the scoreboard are Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. Muscular young men, most of them white, cross the boundaries between the athletic and the erotic by engaging in light bondage and making each other wet with beer and water. This is not NBC, but it looks like it could pass. Placed in an outdoor mega screen, the film functions as a queer impostor, planted by Gonick as a means to address the lack of political awareness that is often encountered in contemporary pride parades across large North American urban centres. By creating a sequence that passes as a mainstream media form, the film gives its public something to recognize, but quickly twists this recognition by inserting a seemingly unrelated combination of references to gay male sexuality – “fudge-packers” being men who to anally penetrate other men – and totalitarian politics – Hitler and Pinochet being genocidal dictators.
While the relationship between homoeroticism and totalitarianism explored in the piece may not be immediately recognizable, there are a series of iconographic precedents in the history of Western art that link the two. Gonick shows one of the football players, shirtless, tied to a post; his long curly hair drips with beer poured on by his mates. “I think he likes it!” says the announcer, explaining the athletic young man’s open-mouthed smile. He is presented in ecstatic captivity, the sexual appeal of his body only intensified by the vulnerability of his situation. The open-mouthed smile grants an identity to the body. His pose and expression recall Il Sodoma’s 1531 work, Saint Sebastian. The painting presents the saint, almost naked, being pierced by arrows but with a rather orgasmic expression on his face. Gonick’s allusion to Il Sodoma provides historical context to his choice of subject matter.
Citing examples that range from Ancient Greek sculpture to early twentieth century photography in the racist American South, Stephen F. Eisenman traces the history of representations of violence as bliss. The “formula of beautiful suffering” (111) presents victims in rapture, as though their punishment transported them into a state of delight. The representation of such delight in punishment works as a legitimization of violence. The Christian civilizing mission of sixteenth century Europe frames the beautiful suffering in Il Sodoma’s image; Gonick’s critical iteration of the formula is framed by the politics of North American occupation in the Middle East. He restages the formula of beautiful suffering in No Safe Words, amplifying its scale and highlighting its persistence in Western culture.
No Safe Words recasts the images of (homo)sexualized torture that have emerged in the aftermath of North American intervention in the Middle East. In another scene, five bare-chested hunks, arms tied back again, kneel in line facing the camera. Rainbow coloured underwear is put on their heads by men dressed in dark gear. The men then pour bottled water on the captive’s heads. These are “the new water sports,” the voiceover says. The image of underwear covering a man’s features echo
