Righteous armies, sometimes called irregular armies or militias, have appeared several times in Korean history, when the national armies were in need of assistance.

The first righteous armies emerged during the Khitan invasions of Korea and the Mongol invasions of Korea. They subsequently rose up during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598), the first and second Manchu invasions, and during the Japanese occupation and preceding events.

During the long period of Japanese invasion and occupation from 1890 to 1945, the disbanded imperial guard, and Confucian scholars, as well as farmers, formed over 60 successive righteous armies to fight for Korean freedom on the Korean peninsula. These were called the Righteous armies, who were preceded by the Donghak movement, and succeeded by various Korean independence movements in the 1920s and beyond which declared Korean independence from Japanese occupation.

Righteous armies during the Japanese invasions of Korea[link]

The righteous armies were an irregular military that fought the Japanese army that twice invaded Korea during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598). Righteous armies were most active in the Jeolla Province in the southwestern area of Korea. Righteous armies included peasants, scholars, former government officials, and Buddhist warrior monks as well. Righteous armies were important during the war because a significant portion of the expected government organized resistance had been destroyed in Gyeongsang and Chungcheong Provinces in the south by the force of Japanese arms at the outset. The natural defenders had been stripped away and the residue had been called north to help protect the fleeing king. Moreover, many of the district officers had obtained their commissions not through merit, but by bribery or influence and were, essentially incompetent or cowards. This was highlighted in their performance and in the performance of their units in the early days of the conflict. This kind of resistance was totally unexpected by the Japanese invaders. In Japanese warfare, when the leaders fall, civilians would simply submit. However, after they learned that people were forming organized resistance against them, they were shocked. Indeed, Japanese strategies were based on the premise that the people of Korea would submit to them and assist their supply line by giving their food. However, this was not the case and righteous armies continued to interrupt the Japanese supply line. People's voluntary resistance movements were one of the major reasons why Japanese invasion was not successful.

Late Joseon dynasty period Korean nationalism outgrew the unplanned, spontaneous, and disorganized Donghak movement, and became more violent as the Japanese occupation began a brutal regime throughout the Korean peninsula and pursued repressive policies against the Korean people.

The Japanese occupiers fought with state-of-the-art cannons, machine guns, repeaters, mounted cavalry reconnaissance units in the mountains, and an entrenched class of informers and criminals developed over the previous decade before the battles began.

Koreans fought with antique muzzle-loaders, staves and iron bars, and their hands. There were rare instances of modern weapons, and a few enemy weapons captured. Europe, particularly England and Germany, and the western allies were on the side of Japan, profiting from huge arms and naval sales, and did much to prevent Korean forces from being resupplied.

For at least 13 years after 1905, small irregular forces, often led by regular army commanders, fought skirmishes and battles throughout Korea against Japanese police, armies, and underworld mercenaries who functioned to support Japanese corporations looting Korea, and as well armed Japanese settlers who seized Korean farms and land. In one period, according to Japanese records in Boto Tobatsu-shi (Annals of the Subjugation of the Insurgent), between October 1907 and April 1908, over 1,908 attacks were made by the Korean people against the invaders.

While most attacks were done using available weapons, and bare hands, international arms dealers profited. Arms dealers and governments who supplied the Korean resistance included English arms dealers, Chinese arms dealers from across the Yalu and in coastal waters; German arms dealers provided Mausers, and a French cruiser in September 1908, resupplied Korean Catholic armies in payment for gold at exorbitant prices. Smugglers from Japan as well supplied Murada weapons, with links to anti-Meiji forces who hoped to see Ito and his clan toppled in the wake of disasters in the Japanese economy.

After the Russian revolution, some weaponry was diverted from the White forces into what is now North Korea, and supporters built there, however this was sparse and while white Russian mercenaries fought against the Japanese, this was a minor element.

During the Righteous Armies Wars[link]

The Righteous Army was formed by Yu In-seok and other Confucian scholars during the Peasant Wars. Its ranks swelled after the Queen's murder by the Japanese troops and Koreans. Under the leadership of Min Jeong-sik, Choe Ik-hyeon and Shin Dol-seok, the Righteous Army attacked the Japanese army, Japanese merchants and pro-Japanese bureaucrats in the provinces of Gangwon, Chungcheong, Jeolla and Gyeongsang.

Choe Ik-hyeon was captured by the Japanese and taken to Tsushima Island where he went on hunger strike and finally died as a martyr　in 1906. Shin Dol-seok, an uneducated peasant commanded over 3,000 troops. Among the troops were former government soldiers, poor peasants, fishermen, tiger hunters, miners, merchants, and laborers.

In 1907, the Righteous Army under the command of Yi In-yeong massed 10,000 troops to liberate Seoul and defeat the Japanese. The Army came within 12 km of Seoul but could not withstand the Japanese counter-offensive. The Righteous Army was no match for two infantry divisions of 20,000 Japanese soldiers backed by warships moored near Inchon.

The Righteous Army retreated from Seoul and the war went on for two more years. Over 17,000 Righteous Army soldiers were killed and more than 37,000 were wounded in combat. Unable to fight the Japanese army head-on, the Righteous Army split into small bands of partisans to carry on the War of Liberation in China, Siberia and the Jangbaik Mountains in Korea. The Japanese troops first quashed the Peasant Army and then disbanded what remained of the government army. Many of the surviving guerrilla and anti-Japanese government troops fled to Manchuria and Siberia and carried on their fight.

Canton Jones, born in Deerfield Beach, Florida,^[1] is an American Christian musician and Christian hip-hop artist.

Early years[link]

Canton Jones began singing at the age of 5 in a vocal group founded by his father. By the age of 16, he was writing and producing songs for friends in his hometown.^[2]

He relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where he attended Morehouse College joining the school's renowned Glee Club. The club performed for celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Dr. Bobby Jones and Ray Charles, as well as performing at high profile events such as the opening ceremony of the 1996 Olympic Games and at the first gospel concert ever held at the US Pentagon.^[3]

Between 1998 and 1999, he joined World Changers Church International, under the pastorship of Creflo & Taffi Dollar and in his own words, grew as a Christian under their stewardship: "My wife, who was my girlfriend at the time, took me to World Changers and I started getting the word. I was going to that church for like three years before I really rededicated my life to Christ. I was there from probably like 1998 or 1999 until 2001 before I really started getting on track."^[3]

In 2001, Jones launched his own gospel record label, CAJO International.^[3] and independently released his first album, 2002's 20 Years, 3 Months & 12 Days, which chronicled his journey to salvation.

He released his second independent album in 2004: The Password and that same year, collaborated with Lil iROCC Williams on Williams's 2004 debut album, and wrote and performed a song, "You and Me", for the compilation Holy Hip-Hop:Taking the Gospel to the Streets.

At this time he was now a member of the choir of World Changers International Church and a solo performance at the church attracted the attention of the church's youth pastor, who asked Jones to help him in the youth department. Not long after that, he was signed to the church's Arrow Records label, an affiliate of EMI.^[2]

He released his major label debut, Love Jones, in the summer of 2005, which debuted at number 11 on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart.^[2] The album is named after his daughter, Love, born to him and wife Ramona in 2004.^[4] Following the album's success, Canton toured the US with over 200 appearances that year.

In November 2005, The Password was re-released nationally at the end of 2005 as The Password: Access Granted and earned him two Grammy nominations.^[3] His success in 2005 saw him listed in The Atlanta Business Journal at number 19 in their 40 Under 40 chart of Atlanta's rising stars.^[3]

On 5 April 2008, he released Kingdom Business. In 2009, he released Kingdom Business, Pt. 2, and Kingdom Business, Pt. 3 followed in 2010.

Canton Jones's fifth and most highly anticipated album for him and for CAJO Records, Dominionaire, was released on Febuaury 1st, 2011. Three singles were released prior to the albums release, "In da Club", "Window", and "GOD", only the first two listed were released on iTunes.

Jang Hyuk (born as Jeong Yong-joon on December 20, 1976) is a South Korean actor.

Career[link]

As a child, Jang Hyuk spent most of his life in his birthplace Busan, before making his drama debut in the SBS drama Model in 1997. Besides the TV drama School and a minor role in the little-seen film Zzang, Jang appeared in g.o.d.'s music video of their 1999 debut single To My Mother. He also acted in several music videos from his rap album, released in 2000 under the name TJ Project. His career first began to take off in 2001 when he was cast in the lead role of the special-effects extravaganza Volcano High together with actress Shin Min-ah. His acting in the eccentric role drew praise from fans and critics.^[1]

In 2002 he continued to make a name for himself, starring in the sleeper hit Jungle Juice, which made the top of the weekly box-office, and especially in the hugely popular TV drama Bright Girl's Success Story with actress Jang Nara. He also took a role in Public Toilet, the HK-Korea co-production by acclaimed Hong Kong director Fruit Chan which won a Special Mention in the Upstream section of the 2002 Venice film festival.^[1]

In 2003 Jang appeared with actress Lee Na-young in the comedy Please Teach Me English, by director Kim Sung-soo (Beat, Musa). His next project was even more high-profile, opposite top star Jeon Ji-hyun in Kwak Jae-yong's Windstruck. Although this film was generally not well received in Korea, it went on to beat Shiri and become one of the best-selling Korean films in Japan.^[1]

In late 2004, together with fellow actors Song Seung-heon and Han Jae-suk, Jang was found to have illegally avoided his obligatory military service.^[1] Amid widespread public condemnation, Jang apologized to his fans, then began to serve his two-year term.^[2]

After his discharge from the army in 2006, Jang rejoined the entertainment scene through the MBC drama Thank You.^[3] A heartwarming story about a young single mother with an HIV-afflicted daughter and the cynical doctor who enters their lives, Thank You surprisingly became a modest hit, and with it Jang left the stigma of his draft dodging scandal behind him.

He then signed up for an international movie production, Dance of the Dragon featuring Singaporean actress Fann Wong.^[4] He won the Best Actor award at the inaugural West Hollywood International Film Festival for his role as Tae, who moves to Singapore to pursue his passion for dance.^[5][6]

Jang made a cameo in Japanese drama Ryokiteki na Kanojo, a remake of the 2001 Korean film My Sassy Girl. After his earlier guesting on star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi's talk show, the director of the drama reportedly added new scenes for Jang that were not included in the original script.^[7] Jang then appeared as the love interest in three music videos of Taiwanese singer Elva Hsiao.^[8]

Several more movies and dramas followed, including a 2008 TV adaptation of the gambling film Tazza,^[9] and the melodrama Maybe.^[10][11]

In 2010, he received the best reviews of his career for his leading role as the slave hunter Dae-gil in the hit fusion historical drama Chuno.^[12][13] His acting coach of 14 years describes Jang as being relentless in his analysis of a character. According to Jang, "It is easy to fail if you don’t understand the steps one has to take to be famous."^[14] He won several acting awards, most significantly the Daesang ("Grand Prize") at the KBS Drama Awards^[15] and a Best Actor nomination at the 2011 International Emmy Awards.^[16][17][18]

Shortly afterward he starred in Ai Shang Nu Zhu Bo ("Fall in Love with Anchor Beauty"), the Chinese remake of 2000 Korean drama All About Eve.^[19] The drama posted high ratings in China during its run.^[20]

In Midas, Jang played a fund manager-turned-lawyer who nabs the job of a lifetime working for a chaebol household, involving him in a high stakes game of power that threatens to transform him into a money-hungry monster.^[21]

He next starred in the legal thriller The Client, saying the film satisfied his wish to play a more emotionally complex persona. Playing a man accused of murdering his wife, Jang said he had to find "the right balance" between appearing "as someone who can appear at times like a criminal or at other times like an innocent man."^[22]

Initially reluctant to sign on to historical drama Deep Rooted Tree because he found the role of low-level royal guard Kang Chae-yoon uninteresting in the original novel, Jang changed his mind upon reading that the character had been dramatized and made richer in the TV script. It tells the story of Kang investigating a case involving the serial murders of Jiphyeonjeon scholars in Gyeongbok Palace while King Sejong the Great (played by Han Suk-kyu) is developing the Korean alphabet.^[23][24]

On June 2, 2008, Jang tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend Kim Yeo-jin. The couple have been together since 2002; she was his Pilates instructor.^[25] His close friends singer Kim Jong-kook and actor Cha Tae-hyun participated in the wedding ceremony.

The couple have two children (born in 2008 and 2009).

Jang has practiced Jeet Kune Do for more than 10 years and is a former professional Tae Kwon Do athlete.

Lee Da-hae (born Byun Da-hye, April 19, 1984), is a South Korean actress who has appeared in a number of Korean television series and dramas such as My Girl and Green Rose.

Lee Da-hae and her family moved to Sydney, Australia, for five years, and she graduated from Burwood Girls High School before debuting as an actress in Korea. She now lives with her mother in Seoul while her father and brother still reside in Sydney, Australia. Besides acting, Lee Da Hae's other passion is traditional Korean dance. She has performed many times in front of small audiences in Australia.

In 2008, following Yoon Eun Hye’s signing event for Zipel refrigerator, Samsung continues to hold another signing event for those who buy Kimchi Hauzen freezer. She was also later cast in the 2008 hit action drama East of Eden along side Yun Jung Hoon and Song Seung Hun. Not much later Lee went to the emergency room. She had collapsed because her busy schedule along with her excessive workouts at the gym resulted in severe fatigue.^[2][3] But Lee Da Hae had shockingly announced her departure from the drama due to health reasons and decided to leave in Episode 40,^[4] which was aired January 14. Lee's character, Min Hye Rin, will embark for overseas studies in America, effectively marking the exit of Lee Da Hae in a natural manner and was eventually replaced by Hwang Jung Eum.^[5]

In 2009, Lee Da Hae accomplished a number of things. She went on vacation with her mother in January, moved to J. Tune Entertainment^[6] where she worked under the same roof with Rain and modelled for Swarovski Spring/Summer Collection. She also filmed the scandalous love-themed music video "Dance For Two" with Taiwanese singer, rapper, actor, Wilber Pan.^[7]

Lee Da Hae is set to make her film debut in a 3D Korean movie titled 'Song of Spring', she will star alongside Lee Sung Jae and Ahn Sung Ki. She plays the role of the female lead named Ara, a dancer.

Timothy Westwood (born 3 October 1957) is an English DJ and presenter of radio and television. He also presents the UK version of the MTV show Pimp My Ride. He is often referred to by other DJs and artists appearing on his shows simply as Westwood.

Disc jockey career[link]

During his career Westwood has DJed for many radio stations, including the newly formed radio stations Kiss FM (which he co-owned) and LWR in the 1980s, followed by mainstream station Capital FM (from 1987). In December 1994, following a shake up of Radio 1 by the then chief executive Matthew Bannister, he was given the new and somewhat innovative national Radio 1 Rap Show. He was the Radio 1 Rap Show's first presenter and has been its only permanent presenter; he is now one of Radio 1's longest-serving broadcasters.

His first broadcast on a legal station appears to have been on 23 March 1985, when he was already working as a pirate DJ.^{[original research?]} He was a guest on a BBC World Service programme called Meridian where he discussed early hip-hop culture in London. After appearing in the 1987 BBC Open Space documentary Bad Meaning Good, which was an early work of his own company Justice Entertainment, he achieved TV exposure in the late 1980s on the ITV programme Night Network, produced by London Weekend Television.

More recently, he presented a series of his own television programme on UKTV channel UK Play, which has since ceased broadcasting. His Radio 1 show is produced by his independent company Justice Entertainment, which also produces Chris Goldfinger's dancehall show for Radio 1.

In the late 1980s, his name was often mentioned in British rap records, as he was the only well-known DJ playing hip hop on legal radio in Britain. He was named Best UK Radio DJ in the MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards in 2000, 2003 and 2005. He is a patron of the internal radio station at Feltham Young Offenders' Institution in west London.^[3]

Westwood was injured in a drive-by shooting in Kennington, South London, on 18 July 1999, after he had been playing at the Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park. According to police reports, gunmen on a motorbike pulled up alongside his Range Rover and shot him and his assistant.^[4][5]

In a recent radio interview on Conspiracy Worldwide, Radio Tim Westwood explained to host Mista Montana the necessity for change and evolution, emphasizing his continued love for hip hop and his excitement for the UK grime scene.^[6]

Radio 1 and 1Xtra[link]

He hosts a show on Saturday nights which runs from 21:00 until 23:00 which is also simulcast on 1Xtra. In May 2012 it was announced that his position as host of the drive time show (weekdays 16:00-19:00) on 1Xtra would terminate in September 2012 ^[7][8].

Criticism by David Cameron[link]

On 6 June 2006, BBC Radio 1 and Westwood's show in particular was accused of encouraging knife and gun crime by the Leader of the Conservative Party and then Leader of the Opposition, David Cameron,^[9] who was speaking at a British Society of Magazine Editors event. Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt^[10] responded in a Press Association news agency article: "There's been a debate about this particular genre of music for many years. Hip-hop is of great interest to many people in our audience. I strongly refute that any of our programmes condone violence, gun crime or knife crime."

Vocal style and upbringing[link]

Critics have also derided Westwood's apparent emulation of Black British pronunciation and dialect, which is claimed to be at odds with his middle class British origins.^[11] In response to this Westwood stated "Honestly, baby, I get love out there, pure and simple".^[12] His father, Bill Westwood, was the Anglican Bishop of Peterborough until 1996 (and was himself a prolific broadcaster).

In interviews, Sacha Baron Cohen has stated that Westwood, including his supposed fake Caribbean accent, was an inspiration for his fictional Ali G character.^[13]
