The Story of Animation
What is "The Story of Animation"?
The Story of Animation is an educational film about the process of animation. Although aimed primarily at potential animation clients, the film has something for everyone - animation students, animation artists, animation producers, and anyone who has ever wondered about how animation is made. Please see our website -
thestoryofanimation.com
The Story
The film follows the journey of "You" (the main character), a 3rd-tier technical writer who dreams of one day being a product designer. Working after hours, he creates a fantastic new product. When he presents his product to his employers, they inform him that it's up to him to create an advertising campaign for the product - an advertising campaign that must be animated. This poses a problem for "you" - he knows very little about animation, and is instantly filled with doubts, and thus his future hangs in the balance. This is where our friendly narrator steps in, to guide "you" through the process of making an animated film. Step by step, our hero's anxiety and doubts are put to rest, and in the end, he is triumphant!
The Production
The Story of Animation came about as a solution to a problem: The Animation Workshop, an animation school in Viborg, Denmark, had been graduating a great number of incredibly qualified animators, animation producers, and CG artists over the past 10 years. These artists had been forming small companies and beginning to produce fantastic work. The problem was not with the studios, or the quality of work they were producing, but rather with the clients: Most of them seemed to believe that animation was a simple, uncomplicated process, and were often disappointed to learn that there were very specific stages in the animation process that required their participation (and finances). It's almost as if they believed that creating animation was as simple as pitching an idea, and then sitting back while a couple of animators with pencil and paper goofed off, told jokes, and drank copious amounts of coffee until "wallah"! the animation was finished! Furthermore, they seemed to think that there would be no difference in cost between an animated film created in flash, 2D, stop motion, cut-out, motion graphics, or fully rendered Pixar-style 3D animation! At the time Morten Thorning, Director of the Animation Workshop approached me with the idea for the film, I was experiencing similar problems with a client in Copenhagen. In fact, I'd just spent several days creating a presentation about the benefits of using animation for an environmental messaging campaign. I was tasked with convincing a panel of scientists, sociologists, environmental activists, and architects how animation could be used to create positive, engaging, and entertaining content for environmental action messaging - no small feat!
The Team
After talking things over with Morten, it was decided that I would write and direct the project, which would be produced by Claus Toksvig of The Animation Hub, and animated at Tumblehead Studios. Tumblehead, led by Magnus Moller, did an amazing job on the film, assembling a team of character designers, animators, storyboard artists, and background artists (all graduates or current students of the Animation Workshop). Tumblehead saw the entire process through, from concept to post-production. The narrator was voiced by the awesome Richard Spiegel, and the sound design and score created by Mark Menza, whose many credits include sound designer and composer for "The Jimmy Neutron Show". Additional support was provided by Thomas Ahlmark (a veteran of many Animation Workshop productions).

Third in Nightshifters’ series of free EPs comes Rx’s wild and bumpy “Bumble” and a suite of varied remixes sure to make you tweak as much as twerk. Hailing from Philly and part of the global bass family known as Subdivision, Rx’s “Bumble” is somewhere between nu-step and chip-tune with a touch of rumble in the trunk. In true Nightshifters form, “Bumble” is an exploration of the strange; defying expectations in his embrace of musical madness. Sure to become a blog favorite, the EP comes with a hilarious video by Bad American that picks up where “the Lawnmower Man” left off and goes where Dire Straights’ “Money for Nothing” feared to tread.
Additionally there is a Santa-sack of massive remixes to round out the release. Nightshifters label head, DJ Donna Summer, delves into the deep end with some chill house organs over bubbly beats. Fellow Subdivision pal Nate Day rips “Bumble” to her bones, adding a somewhat hip-hop vibe; while Seattle up-and-comer, Tony Rocky Horror, raves the fuck out of some wobbles. However it’s newcomer, Nifian, that’s sure to turn heads with his epic dark and arty Dubstep remix. Clocking in over 7 minutes long, it’s a cinematic trip through a twilight landscape.

Nightshifters is built around a core group of musicians making big club tracks to get people dancing! Our sound is hybridized; you can find elements of B’more, Rave, Electro, Dubstep, House, Bassline, and maybe even Drum and Bass in the mix. We’re an open-minded lot who are working hard to make your parties better.

AR scratching
I was playing around with some AR markers the other day and came up with this idea. taking just a plain old vinyl record and attaching an AR marker to the label you can track the record in 3D space. The next question was, can you scratch the record?
So by figuring out the velocity of the records rotation and applying it to the payback of the audio you can scratch. There is some digital noise that needs to bee worked out, but sounds pretty good. Its still really hard to scratch, it takes some practice but is super fun. The next step is to figure out some nice triggers for different modes. I like the idea of not needing a turntable but the actual spinning of the record helps with the scratching and playback. I made a couple modes, one where the record is paused and you can just scratch through the song. The other looks for zero velocity for x time and then continues on with the song. If there is velocity you then are scratching and the audio is affected. I think that this project has some legs can't wait to play more.

Augmented Reality Toys.v1 (Work in progress)
Apparently, my project is very controversial. That is why I have to answer, and make things clearer about my project and its aims.
The aim of this project is to make the frontier between video game and toy gaming progressively disappear by offering a new type of gaming experience linking both sides.
Following the researches of Trond Nielsen in Augmented Reality gaming, I listed some important points which directly guided me to my final concept:
War gaming has two essential elements that are missing in computer war games:
• “First, computer war gaming lacks support for the social aspect of traditional table top war gaming. […]”
• “Second, war gaming is both a hobby of gaming and a hobby of modeling. Some players gain a great deal of satisfaction out of painstakingly assembling and painting an army. […]”
“With augmented reality, designers can build games that draw elements from traditional real world games and modern computer games. This is particularly clear in strategy games, where the strengths and limitations of both platforms are complementary.”
Nilsen, T., Linton, S., & Looser, J. (2004, June 26-29). Motivations for augmented reality gaming. In Proc. of the New Zealand Game Developers Conference (pp. 86-93).
After having studied theses aspects I decided to follow the direction of tabletop game and imagine how we could merge strategy video games and toys.
Therefore, I defined some important objectives to be reached with my concept game.
Objectives:
• Merging the best of tangible toys with the best of video games.
• Keeping the tangible toy with its emotional value as a base.
• Giving a new lease of life to toys.
• Enhancing the toy capabilities thanks to the advantages provided by the Augmented Reality Technology.
• Introducing a part of imagination in the game essential for the user immersion.
• Interacting with the game through a Augmented Reality tangible user interface (AR TUI).
• Assisting players through the game mechanics & rules with a software support to focus on the game content.
• Transforming drawbacks of AR system into parts of gameplay rules.
I want to show through this project that children, teenagers, and even older people, could get off the screen and play everywhere, in a children room, even in the backyard (wireless is possible). In the game Army Men, the virtual characters evolve in a virtual environment that looks like a real house. I propose here to go a step further by using the actual environment of the player to make it the world in which the characters of the game evolve.
• http://www.gametronik.com/site/rubriques/n64/Jeux/Army%20Men%20-%20Sarge%27s%20Heroes%202/Army%20Men%20-%20Sarge%27s%20Heroes%202.jpg
Children could still use their imagination and creativity to develop strategic skills by setting up the tangible environment and imagine a kind of battlefield like they already do with, e.g., Warhammers. With my project they could play not only on a Warhammer table but everywhere they want and use every object of the real environment as a part of the game, e.g., using a shoebox for a wall, hiding behind a plant to protect the toy, etc.
Children like to customise their toys, and that is why I kept the emotional value of the toy at the centre of this project. They could also enhance the capabilities the toys through virtual features, bringing them to life, somehow.
The gameplay of Warhammer is really complex and almost requires reading a book, while strategy video games assist players through rules and game mechanics. This virtual gameplay could be transposed to tangible games and thus virtually enrich the user gaming experience with rewards, goals, downloadable games and by increasing the immersion through virtual sounds and special effects. We could imagine that on the same system they would create stories and levels as in the game Little Big Planet and share it to others on an online community. I am envisioning that players could connect online and share their experiences, objects, advices, tricks, etc and be rated by others, etc.
I am not trying to make a Bloodwar game here. I am just thinking about how we could merge Gaming with toys and gaming with video game and create a new gaming experience taking advantages of both. For this I am making a prototype which is a crossover between Warhammer and Armymen.
The use of the Lego minifig in my demo merely is an example and is there is no political view in this. I am actually working with simple figures for technical reasons. I need the 3D virtual model corresponding to the original to make an occlusion between tangible object and virtual things and be able to display virtual objects behind real ones which is completely impossible otherwise.
For the technical question, I am using Head Mounted Display (It is still a screen, I know…) but soon technology will be almost as natural as wearing sunglasses. Once this

Okay, guys, this is the sith song =) You can find the other songs on my Channel! Lyrics: Two Step x6 Bright lights tv screens, Feels like looking in a magazine, You run on the floor, Feels like dancing is the way to go, But if you let her see that fancy footwork Show her that you're not that shy, Let her see that fancy footwork Show her you're that type of guy. Two Step x6 Young boy don't be late, This girl ain't really got time to wait, You think its all for show, But this is just the only way I know, But if you let her see that fancy footwork Show her that you're not that shy, Let her see that fancy footwork Show her you're that type of guy. Two Step x6 Hey If you ever need a guy, A partner for the week You're holding my direction Then just come and follow me We'll meet up on the floor And maybe do the twerk, So show me what you got in terms, Of fancy footwork. Fancy Footwork x7 Two Step x6
