Human Weapon [HQ] - Silat: Martial Art of Malaysia part 1/5
Though the exact origins of the Southeast Asian martial art of Silat are unclear, due to lack of written historical records, it is said to have developed based on human observation and imitation of animals including the monkey, eagle and tiger. Silat was historically used in the many wars between various indigenous tribes of the Malay islands. Later, when the region was occupied subsequently by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, Silat was largely practiced in secret. Japanese occupation during World War II largely destroyed British rule in the region, and the Malayan states began establishing their independence immediately following the war. Silat--which can be translated as to fight or to fight in self-defense--is most commonly practiced in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and the Philippines. In Malaysia alone, some 500 styles of Silat exist; Indonesia, where the art is known as Pencak Silat, boasts 200 more. Interest in Silat has grown exponentially in the 20th century, and it is now practiced all over the world. Malay cultures prize Silat as a self-defense system, a sport and a way of life; they see it as teaching moral as well as physical discipline. The International Pencak Silat Foundation, founded in 1980, has been working since then to promote Silat and to get the sport included in the Olympic Games. Silat fighters use a balanced array of offensive and defensive techniques, sophisticated footwork and intricate hand motions, which are learned in stages as ...

Silat vs. MMA
Silat developed in the jungles of Indonesia (and surrounding countries) with different terrains for the sole purpose of self-defense/combat - so your moves have to be efficient and dynamic. Silat training prepares you for many different combative situations; one attacker, multiple attackers, armed attackers, fighting in different surfaces, learning how to adjust yourself to different kinds of fighters, and so forth. If you want to learn martial arts, learn one system (whatever you choose), and learn it well until you are efficient and effective in it before branching out into other styles. Abdul-Malik Ahmad, the fighter in this video, has trained in Silat for over 20 years. It can take many years, but it pays off. Because no matter what system you train in, it comes down to the skill of the fighter and tonight it was Pencak Silat. Silat Suffian Bela Diri - Kerambit 1 - counters & takedowns
www.silatsuffian.net Visit the link above to know more about Bruneian Martial Arts ----------------------------- The video hightlight was shot during a successful International Kerambit Seminar in Italy. People from different martial arts attended the seminar and more than half of them are instructors and have thier own martial arts academies. Attendance came from Czech Republic, Slovenia, Spain, other than from different parts of Italy. The seminar covered entries, release counters and take-downs in regards to the Kerambit. What is a KERAMBIT? The Kerambit (aka, karambit, korambit) is a small hooked knife with a ring on its handle. Its a traditional close quarter, stealth weapon found most commonly in old silat styles and a few other southeast asian martial arts like several Filipino Kali schools. No matter how a person tries to convince you that the kerambit is an agricultural or DIY tool you cant help but feel and see that its design and function is more for killing then anything else. Based on the design of a tigers claw, a competent practitioner don't just cut any part of the body but aims for the arteries and soft tissues of the body. The kerambit cuts and slices, but its design functions more for tearing and piercing, to inflict maximum damage. This seminar aims to raise curiosity and awareness among people of different nationalities about the martial heritage and culture of Brunei Darussalam and silat in general. The understanding that what makes a martial art is ...

silatsuffian.net Please visit our link for info on future seminars. This take down technique is present in most silat and most martial arts systems, what makes a difference is how they get to the technique and how they can make it work in real life. This is a variation of the technique in SSBD. Please enjoy.
