Footscray Tramways (then and now)
The Labour Day weekend this March in Victoria marks fifty years since the closure of the Footscray Local Tramways. Here is a collection of then and now photographs. In 1921 the trams lines originally radiated from the Leeds St in Footscray (Railway Station) to Williamstown Rd, Yarraville. Russell St, West Footscray. Ballarat Rd, Maidstone, With the hostilities of World War Two a spur line to service the Ammuniton Factory in Gordon St, Maidstone was added. In 1954, a link from the Ordenance Factory spur, Maribyrnong, a part of the Melbourne Tramway system was linked to the Ammuniton Factory spur in Gordon St, This became the #82 Moonee Ponds-Footscray service. With the closure of the local lines in 1962, the track and trolley wire were removed, yet to this day some of the span poles that held the wire are still standing. Buses now service these routes. At the height of the local trams, Footscray was the chief retail centre of the western suburbs, since then it has waned, but has slowly reinvented itself as a food and cultural destination courtesy of the waves of immigration from post war Europe, Vietnam, and the Horn of Africa. Like Sydney's King Cross and Melbourne's King Street, increasing alcohol problems in Melbourne's western suburbs are being blamed on too many liquor.

Australian Trains - An evening trainspotting at Middle Footscray
On the 16th of June 2012 I travelled to Middle Footscray with the aim of capturing AM3 goods train from Adelaide, which had the rare combination of NR26 (Indian Pacific) + XRB + NR85 (Southern Spirit). It went through Stawell in the early afternoon and I estimated it would arrive into Melbourne around 5:30pm. However my estimate was way off and it arrived at 7pm, well after dark. Plenty of other trains were captured while I was waiting, including MA5 which paralleled the El Zorro BG grain, MC2, MP1 (chasing the tail of MC2, I had the camera pointing in the wrong direction when it appeared from behind MC2's wagons!) and finally AM3. I also just missed NR68 solo on MB2.

Video feed kept dropping out. Judges comments: From www.festivalofbrass.co.nz ... Band no 9 A grade Dear Lord and Father (Repton - Parry arr Graham) Emotive opening with soprano handing over to solo cornet on this banding standard. Band adopts a very choral approach, with nice work in the inner voices under the tune. Quiet passages a bit thin compared to other bands but fuller sound has bright colour and tuning is good. Very expressive performance and lovely touches such as muted cornets to end. Test Very dainty opening - light and pleasant. Not quite the big dynamic flourishes of other bands at first but band gets going and so does the musical interpretations. Odd mispitches here and there as band settles. Nice crescendo work but not always clear articulations. There's some excitement building but it's measured and controlled. This band know the music's intentions and are playful in their style without sacrificing quality of sound or balance. Lovely solo cornet into reprise of opening motif. There's a nice 'colonial' feel to the piece - a life lived in a wide open land Inner voices not always speaking in mid-range volumes. Some untunefulness in upper register in soprano. Lovely transition to slower passage - very soulful and thoughtful. Euphonium not as full sound as others but again, lovely ...

Footscray-Yarraville City Band 2012 New Zealand National Brass Band Contest in Timaru Saturday July 7th 2012 - Own choice section Thanks Tim Kelly (www.BrassBanned.com) for the excellent video feed beaming in very high quality around the world. Tim of course plays with FYCB From the Results page www.festivalofbrass.co.nz Band No 4 Harmony Music -- Sparke Well controlled long crescendos to start. Cornets balancing nicely as band comes together. Little strident at times at first euphonium entry. Settles nicely but not always evenly balanced. Nice entry from repiano. Building very nicely to loud volume. Good atmosphere here. Timpani underpins major crescendo well. Trombones in danger of being too strong. The baton is clearly in control as tempo changes. Nice euphonium work, upper register conquered well. Piece starts off in another direction altogether -- a Sparke trademark -- but the band doesn't get left behind. Nicely playful entries, euphonium, soprano, etc. Big full sound. Bounding along with controlled excitement here. Trombones still a little over the top of the band. Great sharp work from cornets. Eases to cornet cadenza with a casual but watchful style. Soprano a bit insecure coming in but recovers well. Cornet cadenza confidently puts the music in its place. Band holding eagerly below. Horn entry not clear but continues well. Band starts building something here, leading to big, full sounds. A little thin up the cornet run towards the top. Again, principal cornet ...

As part of the Melbourne @ 5 million plan, the City of Maribyrnong will be significantly invested in by state and local governments over the next decade. Some of the infrastructure programs include the Maribyrnong Housing strategy and Footscray City Edge Master plan. In terms of investing in property, the City of Maribyrnong really does offer a secure growth opportunity for the future.
