Waffen SS first Dutch volunteers 1941 speech Mussert NSB WA translation east front
(translated!) A video to share the film of the first Dutch Waffen-SS battalion. We will see the Battalion in the Hague or 'Den Haag' Holland. They're swearing in to the Waffen-SS and declaring loyalty to Adolf Hitler (something many Dutch Waffen-SS men didn't like BTW). The leader of the Dutch Nazi party the NSB Ir. Anton Adriaan Mussert says some final words to the men. Many high Nazi's are present at the 'Binnenhof' in Den Haag. Some of them are later killed after the war for war crimes or betrayed. This video is of great historical value in my opinion since it shows an important part of the Dutch WW2 history. So see this as so. For the non Dutch speaking people, there are no offensive words in this video. It's very interesting to hear how the Dutch Nazi's spoke at the time and how they organized things. I will type some information in the video also a disclaimer in the beginning otherwise I will be bombed by negative comments and other ridiculous things. The picture is still interesting even though it's in Dutch. I will translate some parts so non Dutch speaking people can understand it. I will type it in the video. This video is not meant to adore the Dutch SS but people should have some respect for them. You can see their faces, happy and not knowing were they signed up for. Those men fought one of the most brutal battles of men kind and those men fought one of the hardest battles of Dutch history. But they received no respect or honor what so ever. This is ...

interview with Peter Lamborn Wilson AKA Hakim Bey in his home in May 2009 Part 1 www.youtube.com Part 2 www.youtube.com Part 3 www.youtube.com Part 4 www.youtube.com Part 5 www.youtube.com Part 6 www.youtube.com -- Alright, I'll try to give a short definition. The term tri-racial isolated is not a nice term. It was invented by eugenicists. But it does actually describe the situation of at least some of these groups. The idea of race-mixing, however, was an obsession with the eugenicists, and they saw race-mixing perhaps where, in fact, it hadn't really occurred to any deep extent. Some of these groups, they may be, in fact, completely Black, or completely White, or completely Indian, but they've acquired a reputation, through the misunderstanding and prejudice of their neighbours and the pseudo-science of eugenics, as tri-racial. So usually it's Black, Indian and White would be the three races here in the New World. And the white people around here (in upstate New York), for example, they were Dutch. And we presume that they were Dutch people without much clout, or caste, maybe they were outsiders. And they went up and lived in the hills, maybe they married Blacks or Indians, that's possible. In some cases, they definitely did. But in any case, they would become a sort of a separate people. A friend of mine grew up in a part of Pennsylvania where there was one of these groups, and she said they had their own language, even. I mean, it was a dialect, and it was hard for ...

The Quakers, the Dutch, and the Ladies: Crash Course US History #4
In which John Green teaches you about some of the colonies that were not in Virginia or Massachussetts. Old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it, I can say; ENGLISH people just liked it better that way, and when the English took New Amssterdam in 1643, that's just what they did. Before the English got there though, the colony was full of Dutch people who treated women pretty fairly, and allowed free black people to hold jobs. John also discusses Penn's Woods, also known as Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was (briefly) a haven of religious freedom, and William Penn dealt relatively fairly with the natives his colony displaced. Of course, as soon as Penn died, the colonist started abusing the natives immediately. We venture as far south as the Carolina colonies, where the slave labor economy was taking shape. John also takes on the idea of the classless society in America, and the beginning of the idea of the American dream. It turns out that in spite of the lofty dream that everyone had an equal shot in the new world, there were elites in the colonies. And these elites tended to be in charge. And then their kids tended to take over when they died. So yeah, not quite an egalitarian paradise. In addition to all this, we get into the Salem Witch Trials, the treatment of women in the colonies, and colonial economics. Oh yeah, one more thing, before you comment about how he says we're talking about the American Revolution next week, but the end screen says Seven ...

Bicycle Rush Hour Den Bosch, Netherlands II
Just an ordinary Tuesday afternoon in an ordinary Dutch provincial city 's-Hertogenbosch (aka Den Bosch). This is the main route from the city's Central Railway Station to the suburbs. It is around 5.15 pm. A typical Dutch rush hour. Note the number of cars in these random two minutes, compared to the number of people cycling.

OFFF Barcelona 2011 Main Titles
Still shocked and excited from last night, it's an honor for us to show you this absolutely MINDBLOWING TITLES made for OFFF by PostPanic.
Thank you so much to PostPanic, and specially to Mischa Rozema, Ania Markham and Si Scott, simply epic!!!
Written by Mischa Rozema and British graphic designer, Si Scott, the opening titles reflect their dark thoughts on a possible future. Directed by Mischa and shot on location in Prague, the film guides the viewer through a grim scenario embedded with the names of artists appearing at this year’s OFFF festival. The live action was brought back to Amsterdam for post, primarily carried out by PostPanic’s in-house team of artists but also with the additional help of freelancers and partner companies that we have enjoyed strong creative relationships with over the years. It’s really fair to say that this was a labour of love by a passionate crew of people.
Says Ania Markham, Executive Producer at PostPanic:
“The images created by the crew of people working on the titles has been unbelievable, with nationalities represented including Dutch, Czech, English, American, Polish, German, Swedish and Belgian. It’s been a great opportunity for all of us to work together on a non-commercial project we’re passionate about and we’re so proud of the combined effort and final result.”
DIRECTORS NOTES (Mischa Rozema)
This project started out as a collaboration between myself and Si Scott. Right from the start, we decided that it should be the darkest thing we could make. I think it just felt natural to the both of us; if we had to nail the future, it would not be a nice place.
This idea evolved into a clash of times. Inspired by an idea from the late Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote about different historical civilizations meeting in a single point in time. So what happens when civilizations meet? The 'weaker' one gets eaten by the 'stronger'. You only have to look at history to see the destructive power of civilizations.
So the main underlying idea is: what would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let's take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. The future would pretty much devour the present. Probably in a matter of, let's say, 7 days… So that's what we're looking at. But every ending also means a new beginning, hence Year Zero.
There's all kinds of hidden messages in there. Like the virus eating away at reality, buildings and people, even at the viewers brain. It's behaving off course much like a computer virus. And the network of wires represents the future of social networking. I just made it physical and let it 'catch' the city and it's people like a net. All these ideas just serve as inspiration for us to create a future that worked for this concept. They're not meant to be deciphered by the audience. It's still meant to be just a title sequence and not an actual movie.
Now what makes a good title sequence? Personally, I think it's something that gets you in the mood, warms you up for what you're about to experience, be it a film, tv series or in our case, the OFFF festival. We decided to treat the OFFF festival as a feature film experience. So all we had to do was get the viewer into the right state of mind. Without, of course, being too narrative led. The best title sequences out there are nothing but a random collection of images/scenes that don't tell a lot if you watch them on their own. But edit them together and a new context is created. A context that matters, a feeling that gets the viewer ready for the main event, in our case, the festival.
To get started, the next thing we did was make a collection of ideas that would scare me and Si. So, anything drawn from our youth, right through to stuff that's inspired us over the years as well as seemingly random compositions that trigger the imagination of the viewer. For example, when we show you the aesthetics of a car explosion, it's carefully constructed. Why a car and not something else? Because an exploding car brings extra content to an otherwise simple aesthetic display of violence. A car doesn't explode by itself so instantly the brain tries to formulate the background behind it. It adds an either political or criminal edge to the violence. To me it felt appropriate because of the sense of protest and rebellion the shot has. And maybe the biggest question; was there someone in the car and if so, who was it? For me, every idea should provoke these kind of questions; from a girl in a prom dress holding a rocket launcher to a riot cop standing in the kitchen. All scenes have a pre and post story to them. In no time you're actually trying to connect these seemingly random scenes and boom; you've just created your own strange context. You now have a feeling, a taste and lots of questions probably. Questions that normally would be answered by watching the actual movie. But since there's no actual movie here we'll leave stranded with, hopefully,

After just a week, we reached the awesome goal of 100K plays. Thanks to everybody who shared, commented, liked and got inspired by watching Further Up Yonder. It has been an intense week, spent answering a ton of nice messages that people from all over the world sent to me. You made possible to have this video featured on blogs, forums and major media websites during this week. You helped this video crossing borders, as the astronauts asked us, reaching out to every continent. Thanks for your incredible support. Keep sharing!
***TO THE STARS!***
A timelapse message from ISS to all Humankind. - 2K version available on my blog: http://wp.me/p2fVm6-bv
I wanted to use pictures taken from the International Space Station to tell a story and share the message sent by the astronauts who worked on the station in the last 11 years.
They are working to open a Gateway to Space for all humankind, but people on Earth must understand that they have to get rid of the concept of borders on our planet if they want to follow the astronauts to new worlds in outer space. While the cosmonauts speak a day passes on Earth, from dawn to sunset, until the Gateway opens with a burst of light. The ISS then gains speed, the astronauts are leaving our planet which they see spinning faster and faster, merging earth, oceans and people together, ready to follow them, Further Up Yonder.
Making of
As a filmmaking student, this was my first attempt to craft a timelapse video. It has been a time consuming process, but it turned out as one of my most satisfying projects.
I focused my workflow on colours and harmony of movements, syncing every frame with the music and the voices of the astronauts. Every picture has been post processed individually before being imported in the NLE software, as I tried to take the most out of every image in terms of colours, contrast and neatiness.
Pictures were downloaded from the Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center and edited with Photoshop CS6. Even if they were Hi-res images shot with Nikon D3S cameras, a lot of noise removal and color correction was needed, especially for those shots at ISO 3200, which was the highest ISO speed limit I've allowed myself to use, exception made for the last sequence of the spinning world, which comes from a sequenze of shots taken at ISO 12800. Daytime shots were taken at ISO 200. I've used Topaz Denoise 5 for noise removal, as it is very powerful and accurate when dealing with shadows and blacks.
Editing was made with Adobe Premiere CS6, with a 2K workflow, which allowed me to scale, rotate and pan image sequences whose native resolution is 4K. The video was downscaled to 1280x720 resolution for Vimeo. The original 2K version is available for download on my blog (link on top of this description).

Description //
These visuals all started out from a single illustration (now the animation Tasty Visuals #001, the first loop of the sequence). Whilst creating the illustration I thought about how each bit might animate and so set about turning it into a short ident type visual. It was soon after that I learnt about the Resolume competiton for Kraak & Smaak a Dutch trio of musicians who create some quality funk/breakbeat/electro tunes. As Kraak & Smaak translates to Crunchy & Tasty I thought it'd be too good an opportunity to miss to get a set of food-themed illustrations turned into VJ loops.

Making-Of 'Spencer Tunick Installation' Amsterdam
This is the official making-of the Spencer Tunick installation in Amsterdam 2007, produced for Dream Amsterdam Foundation.
Together with dutch filmdirector Mark de Cloe ('Het leven uit een dag') and eight of my interns I shot this film of an installation by American photographer Spencer Tunick. About 2000 people got naked at dawn in the streets of Amsterdam on June 3rd 2007. He did four sessions on several spots: 2000 nudes in Q-park, 100 women on bikes, 100 men in a gasstation and about 15 to 20 men and women in different combinations on a floating bridge at the Rozengracht. Such an amount of nudes together caused quite some uproar in the early morning.. especially the locals we're surprised to find a bunch of naked people on their doorstep.

euronews reporter - Fighting youth unemployment in the Netherlands
www.euronews.com While youth unemployment rates in Greece and Spain hover around 60 percent, the figure in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands is below ten percent. How do the Dutch combat youth unemployment? How do they get young people into the labour market? Inside the "Innovation Dock" in Rotterdam, 18-year old Gillian is working hard to make sure he gets the skills he needs to find a job in a fast-changing labour market. He spends one week a month at this vocational training college. The rest of the time, he learns on the job as an apprentice in a company. This approach combining training and practical learning forms the basis of education in the Netherlands. "I learn a lot here. I also learn a lot at my workplace. But here, at the vocational training college, on top of what I can learn at work, I acquire very specific skills and a huge variety of up-to-date techniques that you can't pick up in every job. School and work are complementary," says Gillian. "Innovation is very important for us as an educational institute," says Gillian's supervisor at Albeda College, André de Knegt. "We also try to meet the demands of companies: we go to trade fairs where we buy tools or try to update our teaching skills and techniques. We have all kinds of innovative machines and know-how, which are available to students and apprentices." The 22 million euros needed to transform the submarine shipyard into a vocational training center were co-funded by the European Union and the city ...
