Afghanistan Runoff Election Welcomed By Obama
PRESIDENT OBAMA: Hello, everybody. Before I discuss the meeting that I've just had with Prime Minister Maliki I just want to make a brief statement about Afghanistan. I had the opportunity to speak with President Karzai this morning and I wanted to congratulate him on accepting the certification of the recent election. As we all know, this has been a very difficult time in Afghanistan to not only carry out a election under difficult circumstances, where there were a whole host of security issues that had to be resolved, but also post-election a lot of uncertainty. President Karzai, as well as the other candidates, I think have shown that they have the interest of the Afghan people at heart, that this is a reflection of a commitment to rule of law, and an insistence that the Afghan people's will should be done. And so I expressed the American people's appreciation for this step. As I mentioned before, this has been a difficult election. You have violent forces opposed to democracy in Afghanistan. And yet despite these very difficult conditions what we've seen is elections take place; we have now seen the IEC and the ECC in Afghanistan complete their work; we have seen the candidates expressing a willingness to abide by constitutional law, and there is a path forward in order to complete this election process. I want to give particular thanks to Ambassador Karl Eikenberry and his team, who have been working tirelessly throughout this process. I also want to commend Senator ...

Run-off Election for Liberian Presidency
Liberia's Presidential Run Off on November 8th was declared free and fair and transparent by international observers despite previous claims of fraud in the first round made by one of the parties competing in the presidential race, leading to their call to boycott the polls. UN police and military were on hand to assist in creating a peaceful environment for Liberians to go to the polls on that day. UN personnel were on the ground and in the air. International Observers from the Economic Community of West African States, who are tasked with monitoring the elections, noted that low voter turn out was troubling. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Professor Attahiru Jega, President of ECOWAS 200-member Election Observation Mission to Liberia, and Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria: "Low voter turnout characterized early voting even though the crowd gradually improved during the course of the day......Despite these findings, voter turn out remained a concern. While it increased during the course of voting, it seems relatively low compared to the first round." On polling day, the Coordinator of the United Nations in Liberia, Ellen Margrethe Løj visited polling stations in Monrovia and outlying areas. The UN envoy also visited with the UNMIL troops securing the perimeters of the offices of the Congress for Democratic Change, or CDC, where the day before there had been clashes between CDC supporters and Liberian law enforcement personnel. The SRSG met ...

Senegal Faces Run-Off Election After Youth-Led Protests Against Wade's Bid For Third Term
democracynow.org - Senegal appears headed to a run-off election after a heated first round of voting and a year of protests against President Abdoulaye Wade's decision to seek third term, despite a constitutional two-term limit. The protests are "the most bloody and blood-filled campaign that the country has ever known," says Arame Tall, a Senegalese analyst. Over the past year, a movement led by a number of Senegalese rappers has helped mobilize the country's youth against Wade, joining the main opposition and civil society group, the June 23 Movement, or M23. "The reference is not really the Arab Spring here, but rather, the history of renaissance in Africa and the history of political change, which we've started, but now we really need to substantiate," Tall says. We also speak with Ken Silverstein, a contributing editor at Harper's magazine, a fellow at the Open Society Institute and investigative journalist with the group Global Witness. In honor of the contentious race, we've compiled some video highlights of campaign ads and clips from three televised debates between the two Republican candidates.
