U.S. Route 90

U.S. Route 90 is an east–west United States highway. Despite the "0" in its route number, US 90 never was a full coast-to-coast route; it has always ended at Van Horn, Texas with the exception of a short-lived northward extension to US 62/US 180 near Pine Springs, Texas which lasted less than a year, and the signs on that segment were changed to Texas State Highway 54, traveling from Interstate 10 (I-10) at exit 140A and heading to its northern terminus at US 62/US 180.

On August 29, 2005, a number of the highway's bridges in Mississippi and Louisiana were destroyed or damaged due to Hurricane Katrina, including the Bay St. Louis Bridge, the Biloxi Bay Bridge, and the Fort Pike Bridge. US 90 has seven exits on I-10 in the State of Florida. It also includes part of the DeSoto Trail between Tallahassee and Lake City, Florida.

The highway's eastern terminus is in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, at an intersection with Florida State Road A1A three blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. Its western terminus is in Van Horn, Texas at an intersection with Bus. I-10, just north of I-10 and just west of State Highway 54. This was its former intersection with US 80, but the western segments of US 80 have been decommissioned in favor of I-10 and I-20.

U.S. Route 90 in Texas

U.S. Route 90 is a major east-west highway in the U.S. state of Texas with large portions of it running concurrently with I-10. US 90 begins at I-10 in Van Horn, travels through San Antonio and Houston, and continues on into the state of Louisiana.

Route Description

Van Horn to San Antonio

US 90 begins in Van Horn at an intersection with I-10 and SH 54. US 90 travels in a southeastern direction towards Marfa where it starts an overlap with US 67. US 90 travels south and runs parallel to the US-Mexico Border near the Rio Grande. US 90 crosses the Amistad Reservoir then runs through Del Rio. US 90 turns right and runs east towards Brackettville. US 90 runs through Uvalde and Medina counties. US 90 then arrives in San Antonio where it serves as a major freeway on the city's Westside until its interchange with I-10 and I-35 at the southwest corner of Downtown.

San Antonio to Houston

East of Downtown San Antonio, US 90 multiplexes with I-10. This overlap ends in Seguin, and continues where the two highways continually cross each other en route to Houston. US 90 once again duplexes with I-10 east of Columbus briefly separating near Brookshire and continue overlapping from Katy all the way to Houston. At I-610 east of Houston, US 90 becomes independently known as the Crosby Freeway.

U.S. Route 90 in Louisiana

U.S. Highway 90 in Louisiana (US 90), one of the major east–west U.S. Highways in the Southern United States, runs through southern Louisiana for 297.6 miles (478.9 km), serving Lake Charles, Lafayette, New Iberia, Morgan City, and New Orleans. Much of it west of Lafayette and east of New Orleans has been supplanted by Interstate 10 (I-10) for all but local traffic, but the section between Lafayette and New Orleans runs a good deal south of I-10.

The stretch between Lafayette and New Orleans is planned as a southern extension of Interstate 49 and is signed as "future corridor I-49". This part of the highway is important to the offshore petroleum industry, as it connects the cities of Lafayette and New Orleans to the port cities along the coast. Most of U. S. 90 from New Iberia to New Orleans, that has not already been improved to interstate grade, is mainly an expressway, excepting the towns traversed through, that can be easily upgraded to freeway standards. The freeway east of Morgan City, bypassing Houma to the north, was originally built as Louisiana Highway 3052; US 90 was shifted to it from its former alignment (now Louisiana Highway 182) once it was completed.
