On the Pirenne Thesis (200-650/750 CE)
(By Conrad Jalowski) There are numerous dates to the end of Antiquity and the collapse of Rome such as the years 395 CE, 410 CE and 455 CE; however, I have provided the two most substantial dates regarding the end of Antiquity. Did Classical Antiquity terminate in the year 476 CE with the deposition of Romulus Augustulus and the barbarian migrations of the fifth century CE or did the moment of historical disruption occur with the Muslim invasions during the seventh and eighth centuries? The year 476 CE is the traditional date of the collapse of Rome and the end point of Classical Antiquity used by the Enlightenment historian Edward Gibbon in his monumental work The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire while Late Antiquity theorists and the scholar Henri Pirenne have maintained that the end of Antiquity occurred with the disruption of Mediterranean trade, the collapse of the Sassanid Persian Empire in 651 CE, the loss of Roman hegemony in Egypt, the Levant and North Africa, and the rise of the Mussulman caliphates.

TECHNO MYSTIC uses YouTube as a spirit medium, bringing together seven artist-made films and videos that explore the incongruous co-existence of mysterious phenomena and modern technologies. A 3D landscape of classical ruins set to the poetry of WB Yeats. Vangelis-like synths accompany us through 3D rendered ruins of classic antiquity as three British text-to-speech robots read WB Yeats. Mixing irony and tragedy, the video evokes the passage of time in a computer-generated world, a setting which seems to be outside of human history. Here, once-great cultural symbols have degenerated into sentimental kitsch. Yet within these symbolic ruins, there still exists a playful, quasi-mystical hope for cultural renewal. Video by Jon Rafman, 2010 Collection of Stefan Simchowitz. Jon Rafman (1981) is an artist, filmmaker, and essayist. He holds a BA in Philosophy and Literature from McGill University and a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His film and new media work have been exhibited internationally including a the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome and the New Museum in New York City. Rafman's 'Nine Eyes of Google Street View' has been featured in Modern Painter, Frieze, Der Spiegel, Libération, The New York Times, The Guardian, and Harper's Magazine. These towers are trapezoidal-isodomic in construction. They were constructed around the 4th century BC As a defence system of Megara. Home of the Doric Greeks. It guarded the back road that allowed merchants, soldiers and pilgrims safe passage to Athens from the Peloponneses. There are many traces of old houses and ruins scattered through out this region.Hellenistic from the 3rd Ephorate of Prehistoric & Classical Antiquities.
