South Pacific (1958) - Original Trailer
June 17, 2005 - Love blossoms on a paradisical South Seas island during World War II in this splashy screen production of the hit Broadway musical. A Navy nurse falls for a French planter, an American lieutenant woos a fetching native girl and an assortment of sailors lust after female military personnel. All this amorous activity, with the attendant problems of interracial romance, provide fodder for the some of Rodger & Hammerstein's most famous and well-loved tunes, including "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair," "Bali Ha'i," and "Got to Be Taught to Hate."

Mitzi Gaynor - Honey Bun (From South Pacific) 1958
Mitzi Gaynor was born as Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber in Chicago to Pauline Fisher, a dancer, and Henry von Gerber, a violinist, cellist, and music director. Her family first moved to Detroit and when she was eleven to Hollywood. She trained as a ballerina as a child and began her career as a chorus dancer. At 13 she was singing and dancing with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera company. She lied about her address so she could attend Hollywood High School, and signed a seven year contract with Twentieth Century-Fox at age 17. She sang, acted and danced in a number of film musicals, often paired with some of the biggest male musical stars of the day. A Fox Studio executive thought that Mitzi Gerber sounded like the name of a delicatessen and they came up with a name that used the same initials. Notable roles included There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) which featured Irving Berlin's music and also starred Ethel Merman, Dan Dailey, Marilyn Monroe, Donald O'Connor, and Johnnie Ray. She married Jack Bean, a talent agent and public relations executive for MCA, in San Francisco, California on November 18, 1954. She had just been released from Twentieth Century-Fox (before the start of There's No Business Like Show Business) with four years left on her contract and decided with the time off to get married. The union was childless. After their marriage Bean quit MCA and started his own real estate business and managed Gaynor's career. She also appeared in Les ...

I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair from Musical South Pacific 1958 Nellie: I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair, I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair, I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair, And send him on his way. I'm gonna wave that man right outa my arms, Nellie and Girls: I'm gonna wave that man right outa my arms, I'm gonna wave that man right outa my arms, And send him on his way. Don't try to patch it up Girls: Tear it up, tear it up! Nellie: Wash him out, dry him out, Girls: Push him out, fly him out, Nellie: Cancel him and let him go! Girls: Yea, sister! Nellie: I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair, I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair, I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair, And send him on his way. If a man don't understand you, If you fly on separate beams, Waste no time, make a change, Ride that man right off your range. Rub him out of the roll call And drum him out of your dreams. Girls: Oho! If you laugh at different comics, If you root for different teams, Waste no time, weep no more, Show him what the door is for. Rub him out of the roll call And drum him out of your dreams. Nellie: You can't light a fire when the woods are wet, Girls: No! Nellie: You can't make a butterfly strong, Girls: Hmm, hmm! Nellie: You can't fix an egg when it ain't quite good, Girls: And you can't fix a man when he's wrong! Nellie: You can't put back a petal when it falls from a flower, Or sweeten up a fellow when he starts turnin' sour ...

Talk about a moon floating in de sky looking like a lily on a lake, Talk about a bird learning how to fly Making all the music he can make Happy talk, keep talking' happy talk, Talk about things you'd like to do, You gotta have a dream, if you don't have a dream, How you gonna have a dream come true? Talk about a star looking like a toy Peeking through de branches of a tree, Talk about a girl, talk about a boy, Counting all de ripples on de sea Happy talk, keep talking happy talk, Talk about things you'd like to do You gotta have a dream, if you don't have a dream, How you gonna have a dream come true? Talk about a boy saying to de girl: "Golly, baby, I'm a lucky cuss!" Talk about a girl saying to de boy: "You an' me is lucky to be us!" Happy talk, keep talking' happy talk, Talk about things you'd like to do, You gotta have a dream, if you don't have a dream, How you gonna have a dream come true? If you don't talk happy and you never dream, Then you'll never have a dream come true.

Honey Bun...South Pacific 1958 Nellie: My doll is as dainty as a sparrow, Her figure is somethin' to applaud. Where she's narrow she's as narrow an arrow, And she's broad where a broad should be broad. A hundred and one pounds of fun, That's my little honey bun! Get a load of honey bun tonight. I'm speakin' of my Sweetie Pie, Only sixty inches high, Ev'ry inch is packed with dynamite! Her hair is blond and curly, Her curls are hurly-burly. Her lips are pips! I call her hips 'Twirly' and 'Whirly.' She's my baby, I'm her pap! I'm her booby, she's my trap! I am caught and I don't wanna run, 'Cause I'm havin' so much fun with honey bun! I am caught and I don't wanna run, 'Cause I'm havin' so much fun with honey bun! Believe me sonny! She a cookie who can cook you 'till you're done, Ain't bein' funny! Sonny, put your money on my honey bun!

Doug McClure in South Pacific (1958)
Several young up and coming actors appeared in small roles in the 1958 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, "South Pacific", based on the writings of James Mitchener. They included future "Lancer" star James Stacy, Tom Laughlin of "Billy Jack" fame, TV Tarzan star Ron Ely and my favourite actor Doug McClure, whose second wife, BarBara Luna, made her debut at the age of 10 in the original stage production in 1949. Doug's one scene comes after Rossano Brazzi has gone on a mission behind Japanese lines. Mitzi Gaynor walks down the hospital ward, dispensing medication and we hear 3 injured pilots, one of whom is Doug, discuss, off camera, Brazzi's mission. Then the cameras pans around to reveal the speakers, Doug sitting up in his bed between two other beds in which his fellow injured pilots lie. In one interview Doug said he had one line but he kept getting it wrong and they took it off him. But a fellow Doug McClure fan and friend, Barbara and myself are pretty sure the voice you hear off camera saying the line "Everybody thought they'd be dead pigeons in a couple of days" is Doug, the accent is the same as the one he used a few year's later in John Huston's Western drama "The Unforgiven" with Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, Audie Murphy, Lillian Gish and Charles Bickford. For anyone finding it difficult to spot Doug in his scene, here it is, filmed off my computer screen and I zoomed onto Doug so there is no doubt which one he is.

There is Nothin Like a Dame with Lyrics (South Pacific 1958 movie)
A request from one of my friends: There is Nothin Like a Dame. I don't own the music at all. All credit goes to composers Rodgers & Hammerstein. From the South Pacific movie Soundtrack. This song is from the 1958 movie South Pacific based on the famous Broadway Musical of the same name. It is performed by Ray Walston & Ken Darby Singers.

South Pacific 1958...Bali Hai Bali Hai lyrics Bloody Mary: Most people live on a lonely island, Lost in the middle of a foggy sea. Most people long for another island, One where they know they will like to be. Bali Ha'i may call you, Any night, any day, In your heart, you'll hear it call you: "Come away...Come away." Bali Ha'i will whisper In the wind of the sea: "Here am I, your special island! Come to me, come to me!" Your own special hopes, Your own special dreams, Bloom on the hillside And shine in the streams. If you try, you'll find me Where the sky meets the sea. "Here am I your special island Come to me, Come to me." Bali Ha'i, Bali Ha'i, Bali Ha'i! Someday you'll see me floatin' in the sunshine, My head stickin' out from a low fluin' cloud, You'll hear me call you, Singin' through the sunshine, Sweet and clear as can be: "Come to me, here am I, come to me." If you try, you'll find me Where the sky meets the sea. "Here am I your special island Come to me, Come to me." Bali Ha'i, Bali Ha'i, Bali Ha'i!

There Is Nothin' Like A Dame...South Pacific 1958 There Is Nothin Like A Dame Lyrics [ from South Pacific Soundtrack ] Sailors, Seabees and Marines: We got sunlight on the sand, We got moonlight on the sea, We got mangoes and bananas You can pick right off the tree, We got volleyball and ping-pong And a lot of dandy games! What ain't we got? We ain't got dames! We get packages from home, We get movies, we get shows, We get speeches from our skipper And advice from Tokyo Rose, We get letters doused with perfume We get dizzy from the smell! What don't we get? You know darn well! We have nothin' to put on a clean white suit for What we need is what there ain't no substitute for... There is nothin' like a dame, Nothin' in the world, There is nothin' you can name That is anythin' like a dame! We feel restless, we feel blue, We feel lonely, and in brief, We feel ev'ry kind of feelin', But the feelin' of relief We feel hungry as the wolf felt When he met Red Hiding-hood What don't we feel? We don't feel good! Lots of things in life are beautiful, but brother, There is one particular thing that is nothin' whatsoever In any way, shape or form like any other. There is nothin' like a dame, Nothin' in the world, There is nothin' you can name That is anythin' like a dame! Nothin' else was built the same, Nothin' in the world As the soft and wavy frame Like the silhouette of a dame! There is absolutely nothin' like a frame of a dame. So suppose a dame ain't bright Or completely free ...

Nellie: I expect everyone of my crowd to make fun Of my proud protestations of faith in romance, And they'll say I'm naïve as a babe to believe Every fable I hear from a person in pants. Fearlessly I'll face them and argue their doubts away, Loudly I'll sing about flowers in spring, Flatly I'll stand on my little flat feet and say Love is a grand and a beautiful thing! I'm not ashamed to reveal The world famous feelin' I feel. I'm as corny as Kansas in August, I'm as normal as blueberry pie. No more a smart little girl with no heart, I have found me a wonderful guy! I am in a conventional dither, With a conventional star in my eye. And you will note there's a lump in my throat When I speak of that wonderful guy! I'm as trite and as gay as a daisy in May, A cliché comin' true! I'm bromidic and bright As a moon-happy night Pourin' light on the dew! I'm as corny as Kansas in August, High as a flag on the Fourth of July! If you'll excuse an expression I use, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love with a wonderful guy! I'm as trite and as gay as a daisy in May, A cliché comin' true! I'm bromidic and bright As a moon-happy night Pourin' light on the dew! Girls I'm as corny as Kansas in August, High as a flag on the Fourth of July!
