Ada Kaleh
Ada Kaleh (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈada kaˈle], Turkish: Adakale "Island Fortress", Hungarian: Újorsova or Ada Kaleh, Serbian: Адакале / Adakale) was a small island on the Danube populated mostly by Turks that was submerged during the construction of the Iron Gates hydroelectric plant in 1970. The island was about 3 km downstream from Orşova and measured 1.75 by 0.4–0.5 km.
The isle of Ada Kaleh is probably the most evocative victim of the Iron Gate dam's construction. A Turkish enclave, it had a mosque and numerous twisting alleys, and was known as a free port and a smuggler's nest. Many other ethnic groups lived here beside the Turks.
The Austrians built a Vauban-type fort there to defend it from the Ottoman Empire, and that fort would remain a bone of contention for the two empires. In 1699 the island came under Turkish control; but from 1716 to 1738 it was recaptured by the Austrians, and the Fortress of New Orsova was built by Nicolaus Doxat de Démoret, an Austrian colonel of Swiss origin. After a four-month siege in 1738 it was Turkish again, followed by the Austrians re-conquering it in 1789, but they had to return the island to the Turks with the Treaty of Sistova on August 4, 1791, which ended the Austro-Turkish War (1787–1791) (and, by extension, the Ottoman–Habsburg wars) between the Ottoman Empire and Habsburg Monarchy. Thereafter, the island lost its military importance.

Baćina lakes
The Baćina lakes (Croatian: Baćinska jezera) are located in Dalmatia, Croatia. They are named after the inland town of Baćina close to the port city of Ploče. The lakes are part of a picturesque landscape and surrounded by mountains. They are situated between Makarska and Dubrovnik. It is a crypto-depression lake, with its bottom below the surface of the sea.
Despite its proximity to the sea and the permeable nature of the karst area, they are fresh water lakes. The seven lakes cover an area of 138 hectares and they are named Oćuša, Crniševo, Podgora, Sladinac, Vrbnik, Šipak and Plitko. Six of these lakes are linked. The largest lake is Oćuša and the deepest is the Crniševo (34 m). The lakes are connected with the sea and at times the water can be brackish, also the surface of the lakes lies 80 cm above sea level. Salty water is found at the bottom of the deepest lake Crnisevo.
Lake Vrgorac (Croatian: Vrgorsko jezero) located to the north of the Baćina lakes drains into the Adriatic Sea through them.

Belene Island
Belene Island (Bulgarian: остров Белене, ostrov Belene) or Persin Island (остров Персин, ostrov Persin) is the biggest island in Bulgarian waters. The island is formed by the Danube River splitting into two branches passing north and south of it. The international frontier between Bulgaria and Romania follows the north branch of the river and therefore Belene Island is part of the Bulgarian territory. The island is 14.5 kilometres (9.0 mi) long and reaching 6 km (3.7 mi) in width; it is located in the Danube, north of the town of Belene. Belene Island is the fourth biggest Danube island: during an average tide it is 41.078 square kilometres (15.860 sq mi) in area. During a high tide, parts of the island are submerged.
Belene Island is a part of the Belene Islands Complex and of the Persina Natural Park, a home to over 170 species of rare water birds, such as the Glossy Ibis, Pygmy Cormorant, Lesser Grey Shrike, Red-breasted Goose and others. The flora of Belene Island is represented by willows, poplars and asps; there is some arable land. The island was formed of alluvial sediments.

Belgrade
Belgrade ( /ˈbɛlɡreɪd/; Serbian: Београд; [beǒɡrad] ( listen); names in other languages) is the capital and largest city of Serbia. The city is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Its name in English translates to White city. The city proper has a population of over 1.1 million, while its metropolitan area has over 1.6 million people, making it one of the largest cities in Southeast Europe.
One of the largest prehistoric cultures of Europe, the Vinča culture, evolved around the area Belgrade in the 6th millennium BC. In antiquity, Thraco-Dacians inhabited the region, and after 279 BC Celts conquered the city, naming it Singidūn. It was conquered by the Romans during the reign of Augustus, and awarded city rights in the mid 2nd century. It was settled by the Slavs in the 520s, and changed hands several times before it became the capital of King Stephen Dragutin (1282–1316). In 1521 Belgrade was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and became the seat of a the Sanjak of Smederevo. It frequently passed from Ottoman to Habsburg rule, which saw the destruction of most of the city during the Austro-Ottoman wars. Belgrade was again named the capital of Serbia in 1841. The north of Belgrade remained a Habsburg outpost until 1918, when it was merged into the capital city. As a strategic location, the city was battled over in 115 wars and razed to the ground 44 times. Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia (in various forms of governments) from its creation in 1918, to its final dissolution in 2006.

Brăila
Brăila (Romanian pronunciation: [brəˈila] ( listen); Greek: Μπράιλα; Turkish: İbrail) is a city in Muntenia, eastern Romania, a port on the Danube and the capital of Brăila County, in the close vicinity of Galaţi.
According to the 2011 Romanian census there were 168,389 people living within the city of Brăila, making it the 11th most populous city in Romania.
A settlement at this location on the left bank of the Danube, in Wallachia, was mentioned with the name Drinago in a Spanish Libro de conoscimiento ("Book of knowledge", circa 1350) and in several Catalan portolan charts (Angelino de Dalorto, 1325/1330 and Angelino Dulcert, 1339). This may have been an erroneous transcription of Brillago. In Greek documents of roughly that time, the city is referred to as Proilabum or Proilava, a Greek language adaptation of its Slavic name, Brailov. In German language sources, it is mentioned as Uebereyl. The origin and meaning of the name is unknown.
As a kaza, the town and its surrounding area was controlled by Ottoman Turks from 1538–1540 until 1829 (it was restored to Wallachia through the Akkerman Convention); the Ottomans called it Ibrail or Ibraila.

Budapest

The history of Budapest began with Aquincum, originally a Celtic settlement that became the Roman capital of Lower Pannonia.Hungarians arrived in the territory in the 9th century. Their first settlement was pillaged by the Mongols in 1241-42. The re-established town became one of the centres of Renaissance humanist culture in the 15th century. Following the Battle of Mohács and nearly 150 years of Ottoman rule, development of the region entered a new age of prosperity in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Budapest became a global city after the 1873 unification. It also became the second capital of Austria-Hungary, a great power that dissolved in 1918. Cetina
Cetina (pronounced [t͡sɛ̌tina]) is a river in southern Croatia. It has a length of 101 km (63 mi) and its basin covers an area of 1,463 km² (565 sq mi). Cetina descends from an altitude of 385 m at its source to the sea level when it flows into the Adriatic Sea. It is the most water-rich river in Dalmatia.
Cetina has its source in the northwestern slopes of Dinara. Rising from a spring at Milasevo near a small village called Cetina, located 7 km north from Vrlika, it flows a distance of 105 km to the Adriatic Sea. A large artificial lake begins near Vrlika, the Peruća Lake, which was created by a dam some 25 km downstream. Cetina then passes into the lower portion of the Sinj karst field, through the city of Sinj. After that it runs eastward, through the city of Trilj and then back westward around the Mosor mountain, before flowing into the Adriatic in the city of Omiš.
Apart from its visible basin, the Cetina also receives a lot of water from the west Bosnian karst field via underground routes. Its lower course begins from the Gubavica Falls (49 m a.s.l.) near the village of Zadvarje (20 km from Omiš). Here it leaves its canyon and flows into a valley which has nevertheless retained something of the appearance of a canyon.

Croatia

In the early 7th century the Croats arrived in area of present-day Croatia. They organised the state into two dukedoms by the 9th century. Tomislav became the first king by 925 AD, elevating Croatia to the status of a kingdom. The Kingdom of Croatia retained its sovereignty for nearly two centuries, reaching its peak during the rule of Kings Peter Krešimir IV and Dmitar Zvonimir. Croatia entered a personal union with Hungary in 1102. In 1527, faced with Ottoman conquest the Croatian Parliament elected Ferdinand I of the House of Habsburg to the Croatian throne. In 1918, after World War I, Croatia was included in the short-lived State of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs that declared independence from Austria–Hungary and co-founded the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. A Croatian state briefly existed during World War II as a fascist puppet state. After the war, Croatia became a founding member and a federal constituent of the Second Yugoslavia, a socialist state. In June 1991, Croatia declared independence, which came into effect on 8 October of the same year. The Croatian War of Independence was fought successfully during the four years following the declaration.

Csepel Island
Csepel Island (Hungarian: Csepel-sziget) is the largest island of the River Danube in Hungary. It is 48 km long; its width is 6–8 km. Its area comprises 257 km². The word Csepel is pronounced CHE-pel.

Donauinsel
The Donauinsel (Danube Island) is a long, narrow island, in central Vienna, Austria, between the Danube river and the parallel excavated channel Neue Donau ("New Danube"). The island is 21.1 km (13.1 mi) in length, but is only 70–210 metres (230–690 ft) broad. The New Danube waterway is practically an elongated (swimming) lake, technically a diluvian bed.
To most visitors, the island is known as a recreational area with bars, restaurants and nightclubs. It has sports opportunities from rollerblading, cycling and swimming to canoeing. There is one beach that, in its beginning, felt so exotic that it was soon nicknamed the "Copa Cagrana" as a humoristic allusion to Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana: Kagran is the part of the 22nd District of Vienna next to that beach. In the southern and northern parts of the island, there are extensive (and free) nude beaches.
The Donauinselfest is an internationally well-known annual open air festival, and Europe's biggest event of this kind, expected to soon hit the 3-million-visitors mark. It takes place at the end of June (Friday through Sunday) – except for 2008 (September 5th–7th), due to Austria (and Switzerland) hosting the European Football Championship. On September 23, 2008, Madonna gave her first concert in Vienna there in front of an impressive crowd of 57,000.

Donji Miholjac
Donji Miholjac (Hungarian: Alsómiholjác, German: Unter-Miholtz) is a town in the region of Slavonia, Croatia.
Donji Miholjac is located on the river Drava at the border with Hungary, 34 km north of Našice; elevation 97 m.
Chief occupations are farming, rubber and plastics processing, production of vinegar, soft drinks and pasta.
In the 2001 census, there were 9,468 inhabitants in the area, 95% of the population were Croats.
The Miholjac Gathering (Miholjacko Sijelo) represents the most important event, including traditional folk costumes, tunes and dances as well as rich gastronomic offer.
Angling and hunting represent the main basis of tourism. The immediate surroundings of the town offer hunting, and the nearby fishpond and the Drava river angling opportunities. Tennis courts are situated near the hotel. In addition to the Slavonian specialities, Donji Miholjac and its surroundings offer freshwater fish (carp, amur, pike-perch, sheat-fish, etc.)

Dragonja
The Dragonja (Italian: Dragogna) is a river in Slovenia, in the northern part of the Istrian peninsula. It is the third longest river in Istria, after the Raša and Mirna rivers.
The river is 28 kilometres (17 mi) long and flows into the Gulf of Piran. The Sečovlje salt pans are located along its mouth.
In the lower reaches of the Dragonja, there is a territorial dispute between Slovenia and Croatia: while Croatian authorities claim that the Dragonja is a border river, Slovenia claims a strip of territory south to the river as well.

Drava
Drava or Drave (Hungarian: Dráva; German: Drau; Italian, Croatian and Slovene: Drava) is a river in southern Central Europe, a tributary of the Danube. It sources in Toblach/Dobbiaco, Italy, and flows east through East Tirol and Carinthia in Austria, into Slovenia (142 km), and then southeast, passing through Croatia and forming most of the border between Croatia and Hungary, before it joins the Danube near Osijek.
In the ancient times the river was called Dravus. The name is most likely Celtic or pre-Celtic in origin (see Old European hydronymy). The Drava and Spöl are the only two rivers that originate in Italy and drain into the Danube drainage basin. It is the fourth largest and longest Danube tributary. The Gail in Austria, the Meža and Dravinja in Slovenia, and the Bednja in Croatia from the right; the Gurk and the Lavant in Austria, and the Mur (near Legrad) in Croatia from the left are its main tributaries.
The Drava flows through Innichen/San Candido in Italy, Lienz, Spittal an der Drau, Villach, and Ferlach in Austria, Dravograd, Vuzenica, Muta, Ruše, Maribor, Ptuj, and Ormož in Slovenia, Varaždin and Osijek in Croatia, and Barcs in Hungary, being navigable for about 90 km from Čađavica in Croatia to its outfall.

Dravinja
The Dravinja River is the largest tributary of the Drava River in Slovenia. It is 73 kilometres (45 mi) long. Its source is on the Pohorje Massif southwest of Mount Rogla about 1,150 m above sea level. The river passes Zreče, the town of Slovenske Konjice, the ruins of the fort at Zbelovo, Poljčane, Makole, Štatenberg Castle, Majšperk, and Videm, where it merges with the Drava. Its main tributary is the Polskava River.

Dravograd
Dravograd (German: Unterdrauburg) is a small town and a municipality in northern Slovenia, close to the border with Austria. It lies on the Drava River at the confluence with the Meža and the Mislinja. It is part of the traditional Slovenian province of Carinthia. and the larger Carinthia statistical region.
The municipality consists of 24 settlements grouped into five local communities: Dravograd, Črneče, Libeliče, Šentjanž pri Dravogradu, and Trbonje. In 2002, the town of Dravograd itself had about 3,377 inhabitants.
From 976 onwards the area of Dravograd was part of the Duchy of Carinthia. The German name Unterdrauburg denoted the place where the Drava River left Carinthia and flowed into the neighbouring Duchy of Styria. It corresponded with Oberdrauburg up the river at Carinthia's western border with the County of Tyrol. The name Dravograd was invented during the Slovene national revival in the 19th century. Previously, the local Slovene name of the town was Traberk, a corruption of the German name Drauburg, which even today is used by many locals instead of Dravograd. The 19th century was a period of national awakening of the Carinthian Slovenes, and also of the rise of competing nationalisms: Slovene and German.

Dunaújváros
Dunaújváros, known as Sztálinváros from its construction in 1951 to 1961, is an industrial city in Hungary's Central Transdanubia region lying along the Danube river. It is in Fejér county. The city was built around the village of Dunapentele.
Dunaújváros is one of the newest cities of the country. It was built in the 1950s during the industrialization of the country under Socialist rule, as a new city next to an already existing village, Dunapentele.
Dunapentele was not built on until the 1950s. The construction started on the Danube's right side. The area has been inhabited since ancient times. When Western Hungary was a Roman province under the name Pannonia, a military camp and a town called Intercisa stood in this place, at the border of the province. The Hungarians conquered the area in the early 10th century. The village Pentele, named after the medieval Greek saint, Pantaleon, was founded shortly after.
Between 1541 and 1688 the village was under Ottoman rule, and during the 15-year war it was completely destroyed. During the freedom fight led by Prince Francis II Rákóczi the place was deserted again. In the 18th century the village began to prosper. In 1830 the village got the right to hold two market days every week. In 1831 there was a cholera epidemic and the peasants revolted. In 1833 Pentele was granted town status (oppidum) by Ferdinand V. The citizens took part in the freedom fight in 1848-49.

Fram Creek (Slovene: Framski potok) is a river in Lower Styria, Slovenia. The river is 26 kilometres (16 mi) in length. Its source is on the Pohorje Massif, near Sveti Areh in the Maribor Pohorje Ski Resort. It passes Fram and Rače and merges with other streams of the Drava Plain (Dravsko polje) and joins the Polskava River.

Gacka
Gacka is a river located in the Lika region in central Croatia. Because for a large part of its course it is a subterranean river, estimates on its length vary. The overground part has undergone substantial human intervention - before it was 32 kilometers long, now it is only 11 km. It has been regulated by man to flow into an aquaduct in Gusić polje (known as Tunel Gacka-Gusić Jezero) and then into the Adriatic Sea through a hydroelectric installation HE Senj near Sveti Juraj. HE Senj takes inflow from Gacka and Lika, since it was built in 1965. The river passes through karst fields and most notably the town Otočac, and its headwaters are known as a superb spot for trout fishing.

The name "Galaţi" is derived from the Cuman word galat. This word is borrowed from the Arabic word qal'at, meaning a fortress. Other etymologies have been proposed, such as the Serbian galac. However, the galat root appears in nearby toponyms, some of which show clearly a Cuman origin, for example Gălățui Lake, which has the typical Cuman -ui suffix for "water". Another toponym in the region is the Galicia, with its town of Halych, locally associated with the jackdaw (Kawka, Halka). Other similar place names are Galich, Russia and Galatia in Turkey. Gaul might be a derivation from Galatia, thus suggesting a Celtic origin. A similar pattern occurs with the celtic sounding word, Ligures referring to "Caladaa" being a city of the Ligurian or Genoan territories. Although possible, a celtic origin is, however, unlikely.

Between lie the forested uplands of central Germany and the low-lying lands of northern Germany (lowest point: Neuendorf-Sachsenbande at 3.54 metres (11.6 ft) below sea level), traversed by some of Europe's major rivers such as the Rhine, Danube and Elbe.

Geography of Moldova
Located in southeastern Europe, Moldova is bordered on the west by Romania and on the north, south, and east by Ukraine. Giurgiu
Giurgiu (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈd͡ʒjurd͡ʒju]) is the capital city of Giurgiu County, Romania, in the Greater Wallachia. It is situated amid mud-flats and marshes on the left bank of the Danube facing the Bulgarian city of Ruse on the opposite bank. Three small islands face the city, and a larger one shelters its port, Smarda. The rich grain-growing land to the north is traversed by a railway to Bucharest, the first line opened in Romania, which was built in 1869 and afterwards extended to Smarda. Giurgiu exports timber, grain, salt and petroleum, and imports coal, iron, and textiles.
The Giurgiu-Ruse Friendship Bridge, the only one in the shared Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube, crosses the river in the outskirts of the city.
According to the 2002 census, Giurgiu has a population of 69,345. In 1900 its population was 13,977; in 1930 it had a population of 30,348.
The area around Giurgiu was densely populated at the time of the Dacians (first century BC) as archeological evidence shows, and Burebista's capital was in this area (it is thought to be in Popeşti on the Argeş river). During Roman times this was the site of Theodorapolis, a city built by the Roman emperor Justinian (483-565).

Glogovnica
Glogovnica is a river in central Croatia, a right tributary of Česma. It is 61 kilometres (38 mi) long.
Glogovnica rises in the southeastern part of Kalnik near the village of Apatovac, and flows towards the south, passing east of the eponymous villages of Donja Glogovnica and Gornja Glogovnica, as well as the city of Križevci, turning slightly to the southwest. It passes near Gradec, where it becomes a series of man-made drainage canals and receives influx from the right tributary of Kamešnica. It then turns southeast and flows into the Česma west of Čazma.

Gradaščica
The Gradaščica is a river in Slovenia. The river is 33 kilometres (21 mi) long. It begins in Polhov Gradec at the confluence of Little Creek (Slovene: Mala Voda) and Big Božna Creek. Near Vrhovci it is joined by Horjulščica Creek (a.k.a. Horjulka Creek). Not far past Bokalce, most of the stream is split off into the Mali Graben Canal and the rest continues as the Gradaščica (also known as the Mestna Gradaščica 'Town Gradaščica'). This continues through the Vrhovci neighborhood into the Vič district, where it is joined by Glinščica Creek, before continuing into the Trnovo district and emptying into the Ljubljanica.

Great Morava
The Great Morava (Serbian: Велика Морава, pronounced [v̞ê̞likaː mɔ̌rav̞a]) is the final section of the Morava (Cyrillic: Морава), a major river system in Serbia.
The Velika (Great) Morava is created by the confluence of the South Morava and the West Morava, located near the small town of Stalać, a major railway junction in central Serbia. From there to its confluence with the Danube northeast of the city of Smederevo, the Velika Morava is 185 km long. With its longer branch, the West Morava, it is 493 km long. The South Morava, which represent the natural headwaters of the Morava, used to be longer than the West Morava, but due to the regulations of river bed and melioration, today it is shorter. Regulations were made on all three branches, and they all used to be much longer, so the Morava was over 600 km long. Today, the most distant water source in the Morava watershed is the source of the river Ibar, right and longest tributary of the Zapadna Morava, originating in Montenegro, which gives the Ibar-West Morava-Great Morava river system a length of 550 km, which still makes it the longest waterway in the Balkan Peninsula.

Great War Island

Great War Island (Serbian: Велико ратно острво, Veliko ratno ostrvo) is a river island in Belgrade, capital of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of Sava and Danube rivers. Though uninhabited, the island is part of the Belgrade City proper, and belongs to the city municipality of Zemun.
Great War Island is located at the mouth of the Sava river into the Danube, in the Danube's widening between the Kalemegdan fortress as the ending section of the Terazije ridge of northern most part of Šumadija on the west and the low, easternmost section of the Syrmia plain, the modern Ušće neighborhood of Novi Beograd, on the south.
The island is relatively close to the banks, at the closest it is just 200 meters away from both Novi Beograd and Kalemegdan. On the south, halfway between the Great War Island and Ušće is the remnant of previously larger Little War Island.
The Great War Island is generally triangular in shape and covers an area of 2.11 km². It is low, for the most part marshy and often flooded by the Danube. The main physical feature on the island is the canal of Veliki Galijaš. In time, the canal was cut off from the Danube and effectively turned into a lake, with an area of 0.24 km² and the major natural bird and fish spawning area on the island. However, during the droughty years the lake drains out completely causing damage to the closed eco-system centered around it. Currently some two-thirds of the island are used as a nature preserve for 196 bird species, many of which are endangered. One of Belgrade's beaches, Lido, is located on the northern tip of the island.

The area has been inhabited since ancient times. The first large settlement dates back to the 5th century BCE; the inhabitants were Celts. They called the town Arrabona, a name that was used for eight centuries and whose shortened form is still used as the German (Raab) and Slovak (Ráb) names of the city.
Roman merchants moved to Arrabona during the 1st century BCE, and around 10 CE the Roman army occupied the northern part of Western Hungary, which they called Pannonia. Although the Roman Empire abandoned the area in the 4th century due to constant attacks by the tribes living to the east, the town remained inhabited.

Idrijca
The Idrijca is a river flowing through the Idrija Hills and Cerkno Hills. It is 60 kilometres (37 mi) long. It rises near Vojsko, flows towards northeast and after passing through Idrija turns to the northwest. After passing through Spodnja Idrija and Cerkno it joins the Soča in Most na Soči.
The river basin has an area of 598 square kilometres (231 sq mi). The major tributaries are the Belca, Zala, Cerknica, and Bača from the right and the Nikomlja, Kanošica, and Trebušica from the left. One of the right tributaries is also the Jezernica River, which originates from the Wild Lake (Slovene: Divje jezero). Being only 55 m long, the Jezernica is the shortest river in Slovenia.
The river has many fish, among which the Salmo marmoratus, the Rainbow Trout, and the Grayling are noteworthy. In the past, timber was driven down the Idrijca to Idrija to be used as pillars in the Idrija mercury mine. Special logging sluices (Sln. klavže) were employed for this purpose from the 17th until the 19th century.

Innichen
Innichen (Italian: San Candido) is a market town and comune (municipality) in South Tyrol in the Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol.
It is located in the Puster Valley on the Drava river, about 120 km northeast of Trento and about 80 km northeast of Bolzano (Bozen), on Italy's border with Austria.
As November 2010, it had a population of 3,175.
Innichen borders the municipalities of Toblach, Innervillgraten (Austria), Sexten, and Sillian (Austria).
It is home to the Innichen Abbey, founded here in the late 8th century and which belonged to the Archbishopric of Freising. The abbey itself was disestablished in 1785, while the surrounding estates were acquired by the County of Tyrol after the Mediatisation of 1803 (Reichsdeputationshauptschluss). According to the Treaty of Saint-Germain terms, Innichen became part of Kingdom of Italy in 1919. Innichen is still the site of a Franciscan monastery founded in 1691.
The emblem shows an argent tower with the Ghibelline merlon on two levels, with the portal and the portcullis; above the door a coat of arms showing the head of a Moor, crowned with a or diadem on azure. The tower has settled on vert countryside and gules. This kind of representation points out that the site was once under the rule of the Bishops of Freising owners of a large area in the region from 769 to 1803. The coat of arms was granted by King Albert I of Germany in 1303.

Izmail
Izmail (Ukrainian: Ізмаї́л, translit. Izmayil; Russian and Bulgarian: Измаил, translit. Izmail; Romanian: Ismail or Smil; Turkish: İşmasıl or Hacidar; also referred to as Ismail; Polish: Izmaił) is a historic city on the Danube river in south-western Ukraine. The city is the administrative center of the Izmail Raion (district) in the Odessa Oblast (province) and the largest Ukrainian port on the Danube. As such, it is a center of the food processing industry and a popular regional tourist destination. It is also a base of the Ukrainian Navy and the Ukrainian Sea Guard units operating on the river. The World Wildlife Fund's Isles of Izmail Regional Landscape Park is located nearby.
The current estimated population is around 85,000, with ethnic Russians forming about 42.7% of that total, 38% being Ukrainians, 10% Bessarabian Bulgarians, and 4.3% Moldovans.
The fortress of Izmail was built by Genoese merchants in the 12th century. It belonged for a short period of time to Wallachia (14th century) - as the territory north of the Danube was one of the possessions of the Basarabs (later the land being named after them, Bessarabia). The town was first mentioned with the name Ismailiye, derived from the name of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Izmail, the adding of initial i being a feature of Ottoman Turkish.

Jadro
The Jadro River is a watercourse in Dalmatia, Croatia that discharges to the Adriatic Sea. The upper reaches of the Jadro River as well as its source are protected as an ichthyological nature reserve, partly due to the presence of an endemic species of soft-mouthed trout. The headwaters of the Jadro River were the original water supply for the ancient city comprised by Diocletian's Palace (now an area within the present day city of Split). Contemporary studies indicate favourable water quality levels of the river near the headwaters at Jadro Spring.
The Jadro flows through the town of Solin and has a length of approximately four kilometres' moreover, the river provides water to the cities of Split, Kaštela and Trogir. People from Solin also call it Solinska rika.
Salmo obtusirostris salonitana is an endemic trout species living in this river, which is currently endangered by the Rainbow trout.

Kobilje Creek
Kobilje Creek (Hungarian: Kebele, Slovene: Kobiljski potok or Kobiljanski potok) is a brook in northeastern Slovenia and eastern Hungary. The brook is 33 kilometres (21 mi) long; 24 km (15 mi) of the course is in Slovenia. Its source is at Kamenek Hill (391 metres or 1,283 feet) and it flows through Kobilje, crosses the Slovenian–Hungarian border, returns to Slovenia, and joins the Ledava from its left side. It is the longest tributary of the Ledava.
Kobilje Creek was first mentioned in 1208 as aguam Kobula. In 1236, it was mentioned as Kebela, in 1329 as Kebelie, and in 1338 as Kebele. The Slovene name of the creek is derived from Slavic *kobyla 'mare'. The current Slovene names for the creek are derived from the settlement of Kobilje. However, based on medieval sources, the creek was originally called *Kobilja (voda) (literally, 'mare creek') and the settlement of Kobilje was named after the creek. The creek was then later renamed after the settlement.

Kopački Rit
Kopački Rit (Kopački Tršćak, Hungarian: Kopácsi rét), is a nature park in eastern Croatia. It is located northwest of the confluence of the Drava and the Danube, situated at the border with Serbia. It comprises many backwaters and ponds along the Danube. It is one of the most important, largest and most attractive preserved intact wetlands in Europe.
The vicinity of the big city of Osijek and its surroundings, as well as excellent communications (by road, railway, plane and ship) enable a high visiting rate. The beauty of "intact" nature, the multitude of waters, flora and fauna attract not only excursionists and visitors but also many experts and scientists from the whole of Europe.
A part of Kopački Rit has been designated as a special zoological reserve. Around 260 various bird species nest here (wild geese and ducks, Great White Egret, White Stork, Black Stork, White-tailed Eagle, crows, coots, gulls, terns, kingfishers, European Green Woodpecker, etc.), and there are many other species using this area as a temporary shelter on migration from the northern, cooler regions to the southern, warmer areas and vice versa.

Korana
The Korana is a river in central Croatia and west Bosnia and Herzegovina. The river has a total length of 134 km (83 mi) and watershed area of 2,595 km² (1,002 sq mi).
It rises in the eastern parts of Lika, creates the world-famous Plitvice Lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Downstream from Plitvice Lakes the Korana river forms a 25 kilometers long border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina near Cazin. From there it flows northwards through Croatia, where it finally reaches the river Kupa at Karlovac.
The soil of the karst region, through which this river flows consists of limestone. Under certain physical and chemical conditions the river is constantly creating new soil from plants (see: Plitvice Lakes).

Kozloduy Island
Kozloduy Island (Bulgarian: остров Козлодуй, ostrov Kozloduy) is the second largest Bulgarian Danubian island (after Belene Island). Located opposite the town of Kozloduy, it is 7.5 km in length and between 0.5 and 1.6 km in width, with an area of 6.1 km².
The island raises 3-4 metre above the river and the flora consists of river poplar trees. Birds known to nest on the island include wild geese and wild ducks.

Krka National Park (Croatian: Nacionalni park Krka) is one of the Croatian national parks, named after the river Krka that it encloses. It is located along the middle-lower course of the Krka River in central Dalmatia, in Šibenik-Knin county, downstream Miljevci area, and just a few kilometers northeast of the city of Šibenik. It was formed to protect the Krka River and is intended primarily for scientific, cultural, educational, recreational, and tourism activities. It is the seventh national park in Croatia and was proclaimed a national park in 1985.
The Krka National Park is located entirely within the territory of Šibenik-Knin County and encompasses an area of 109 square kilometers along the Krka River: two kilometers downriver from Knin to Skradin and the lower part of the river Čikola. The Krka National Park is a spacious, largely unchanged region of exceptional and multifaceted natural value, and includes one or more preserved or insignificantly altered ecosystems.

Kupa
The Kupa (Croatian) or Kolpa (Slovene) river, known in Roman times as Colapis (Latin), forms a natural border between north-west Croatia and southeast Slovenia. It is 297 kilometres (185 mi) long, with its border part having a length of 118 km (73 mi) and the rest located in Croatia.
The Kupa originates in Croatia in the mountainous region of Gorski kotar, northeast of Rijeka, in the area of Risnjak National Park. It flows a few kilometers eastwards, receives the small river Čabranka from the left, before reaching the Slovenian border.
It then continues eastwards, receives influx from the river Lahinja from the left in Primostek, passes Vrbovsko, and eventually detaches from the Slovenian border in Metlika. It then reaches the city of Karlovac, where it receives influx from two other rivers from the right, Dobra and Korana (which in turn is joined by Mrežnica).
It continues flowing to the east, where it merges with Glina from the right as well as Odra from the left, and proceeds to the city of Sisak where it flows into the Sava.

Kupčina
Kupčina is a river in central Croatia, a left tributary of Kupa. It is 56 kilometres (35 mi) long and its basin covers an area of 614 square kilometres (237 sq mi).
Kupčina rises in the mountainous areas of Žumberak near the village of Sošice, and flows towards the southeast near the eponymous village of Kupčina Žumberačka. It turns slightly to the south, passes near Krašić, and turns back southeast past another eponymous village of Gornja Kupčina, before it enters a wide lowland area near Draganić. Lahinja
Lahinja is a river in White Carniola, the extreme southeastern part of Slovenia. It is 34 kilometres (21 mi) long and originates from several karstic sources at the end of a steephead valley between the villages of Knežina, Belčji Vrh, and Mali Nerajec.
In its upper part the river flows towards the north in a narrow bed with quite a shallow gradient, resulting in the fact that it meanders significantly. All of its major affluents join it from the west and all of them start with karstic sources. At Dragatuš it receives a major tributary of Podturnščica, and at Črnomelj of Dobličica. From the outflow of Podturnščica the bed of Lahinja is narrow and up to 20 meters deep, with numerous bends. At the vicinity of one of them stands the Gradac Castle. Whereas from Črnomelj to Gradac the river has no surface affluents, below the Gradac it is joined by a water-rich and faster-flowing Krupa. After confluencing with Krupa, Lahinja turns towards the east. It joins Kolpa at Primostek.
The Lahinja's river basin is asymmetric, as it receives the majority of its surface affluents from the right side. It is a part of the Sava river basin. From Knežina to Pusti Gradec, along the first seven kilometers (4,5 mi) of Lahinja, extends the Lahinja Regional Park.

Lake Kreda
Lake Kreda is a man-made lake in the Radovna Valley in northwestern Slovenia. The lake got its name from the chalk (Slovene: kreda) that was mined in the area until 1985. The digging also created a basin, which gradually filled with water and the lake appeared. The mining ceased because it was unprofitable and due to conservation concerns (the area is within Triglav National Park), but the lake remained and is now occasionally used as a recreation site.
Today, the lake and its surrounding wetlands are an important habitat for amphibians, such as the common frog and the common toad in the Radovna Valley.

Lake Prokljan (Croatian: Prokljansko jezero) is a lake in the Croatian region of Dalmatia, located near the cities of Skradin and Šibenik.
The lake is situated in the lower reaches of the river Krka, and it covers an area of 11.1 square kilometres (4.3 sq mi). It is not entirely closed, but is connected to the sea by a narrow channel which leads to Šibenik harbor. Its elevation above sea level is 0.5 metres (1.6 ft) while its maximum depth is 25 metres (82 ft).
Despite its connection to the sea, it does not have high salinity: in the lower layers its water is salty, and near the surface it is freshwater. The northern part of the lake is quite shallow, with an average depth of about 4 meters, while the southern part is deeper, with some 20 to 25 meters.
The lake’s major tributary is the Krka River, which has its source near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, flows through Knin and enters Prokljansko jezero near the city of Skradin.
In the northern part of the lake, there is a small islet called Stipanac, a site with ruins dating from antiquity to medieval times.

Lavant River
The Lavant (Slovene: Labotnica) is a left tributary of the Drava in the Austrian state of Carinthia. It originates in the small Lavantsee at the southern slope of the Zirbenkogel mountain in Styria, then turns southeastwards and after 7 miles reaches the border to Carinthia. The river flows through the towns of Bad Sankt Leonhard im Lavanttal, Wolfsberg and Sankt Andrä until it reaches the Drava shortly before it crosses the border to Slovenia.

Ledava
The Ledava is the largest river of Goričko, northeastern Slovenia, and the largest tributary of the Mur River in Slovenia. The river is 76 kilometres (47 mi) in length. It originates in Austria as the Lendva Bach and first flows southeast. It enters Slovenia near Kugla Hill, the highest peak of Prekmurje (418 metres or 1,371 feet), and flows south as the Ledava. In this part of its course it forms the only gorge in Goričko. In the village of Ropoča it flows into the Ledava Reservoir, which distinguishes itself by a variety of bird species, a variety of dragonflies, and the best preserved otter population in Slovenia. The Ledava is the only outflow from the lake. In its lower course the river flows through Murska Sobota and Lendava. Legrad
Legrad is a municipality in northern Croatia, located north of Koprivnica and east of Ludbreg in the Koprivnica–Križevci County. There are 2,764 inhabitants in the municipality, absolute majority of which are Croats, besides whom there is also a Hungarian minority. Margaret Island
Margaret Island (Hungarian: Margit-sziget) is a 2.5 km (1.6 mi) long island, 500 metres (550 yards) wide, (0.965 km² (225 acres) in area) in the middle of the Danube in central Budapest, Hungary. It belongs administratively to the 13th district. The island is mostly covered by landscape parks, and is a popular recreational area. Its medieval ruins are reminders of its importance in the Middle Ages as a religious centre. The island spans the area between the Margaret Bridge (south) and the Árpád Bridge (north).
Today's appearance was developed through the connection of three separate islands, the Festő, the Fürdő and the Nyulak, during the end of the 19th century, to control the flow of the Danube. The island was called Nyulak szigete (English: Island of the Rabbits) in the Middle Ages, and it received its current name after Saint Margaret (1242–1270), the daughter of Béla IV of Hungary who lived in the Dominican convent on the island. Other names of the island were Nagyboldogasszony-sziget, Úr-sziget, Budai-sziget, Dunai-sziget, Nádor-sziget, Palatinus-sziget during different periods of its history. It began to grow rapidly after the victory of Rudolf I of Habsburg over Otakar II of Bohemia in 1278. Maribor withstood sieges by Matthias Corvinus in 1480 and 1481 and by the Ottoman Empire in 1532 and 1683, and the city remained under the control of the Habsburg Monarchy until 1918.

Meža
The Meža is a 43 kilometres (27 mi) long river in Carinthia, Slovenia. It has its source on the Austrian side of the state border near Mount Olševa, becomes subterranean a kilometer from its source, and reappears on the surface in Koprivna near Črna na Koroškem, Slovenia. It is the central river of the Mežica Valley. It flows through Črna na Koroškem, Mežica, Prevalje, and Ravne na Koroškem, and into the Drava River at Dravograd. In its first part the Meža falls rapidly and is a typical alpine river with its tributaries from the Kamnik Alps and the Karavanke Mountains. After Črna na Koroškem it becomes a slow meandering lowland river. Its main tributary is the Mislinja River, which joins the Meža River a couple of hundred meters before it joins the Drava.
The Meža is noted for being the most polluted river in Slovenia. In 1982 the singer-songwriter Marijan Smode wrote a song about it titled Mrtva reka (The Dead River). This song has even been published in primary-school textbooks. The main polluter has been the Ravne Steelworks (Slovene: Železarna Ravne) conglomerate.

Natisone
The Natisone (Latin: Natiso; Friulian: Nadison; Slovene: Nadiža) is a 60 kilometres (37 mi) long river flowing in Slovenia and Italy. Neretva

Nevljica
The Nevljica is a river in the Municipality of Kamnik, Slovenia. It comes out below Kozjak Hill (737 m, near Črni Vrh v Tuhinju) and flows through the Tuhinj Valley. It also flows through the settlements of Nevlje and Mekinje. It is a left tributary of the Kamnik Bistrica.

In January 1938, due to erosion and frequent flooding, the administration of the Drava Banovina started to regulate the bed of the river. In addition, a bridge was to be built. On 14 March 1938, workers at the site found objects that were later shown to be an almost complete skeleton of a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). An Upper Paleolithic archeological site was established in Nevlje. Remains of other animals as well as a human tool were found, and it was shown that around 22,000 years ago there was a human hunting settlement in the area. The skeleton gave its name to the bridge over the river in Nevlje.

Novi Sad

The city was heavily devastated in the 1848 Revolution, but it was subsequently restored. During the city's long history, it has maintained its multi-cultural identity, with Serbs, Hungarians and Germans being the main ethnic groups. Today, Novi Sad is an industrial and financial centre of the Serbian economy, as well as a major cultural hub.

During the Ottoman rule, the city was part of the Ottoman Province of Temeşvar and was a large settlement mostly populated by ethnic Serbs.

Radovna Valley
The Radovna Valley (Slovene: Dolina Radovne) is an alpine valley in the Julian Alps in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia.
Radovna Creek, created by smaller tributaries from the glacial valleys of the Krma and Kot valleys, flows through it.
It is surrounded by the northern extensions of the Pokljuka Plateau, the foothills of the Triglav range, and the highest peak of the Mežakla Plateau, Jerebikovec (1593 m). It is connected by a road via the Kosmač Pass to the north with nearby Mojstrana and a road leads down the valley towards Bled.
Extensive pastures in the valley are used for cattle. There are also a number of private holiday homes scattered throughout the valley.

Rječina
Rječina (Italian: Eneo) is a river in Croatia which flows in the Adriatic Sea in the city of Rijeka (Fiume).
It is about 19 km long, with average width of 9-16 m. It springs from the cave on the height of 325 m above sea level, under high cliff of Kičej hill (606 m above sea level). Until 1870 the river's spring was under the next by hill called Podjavorje, but it collapsed in earthquake near village Klana. The most noticeable confluents are Sušica, Lužac, Zala, Zahumčica, Golubinka, Ričinica i Borovšćica but they are mostly dry through the year. In 1968 a dam was built for the needs of hydroelectric power plant, and lake Valići came to existence, but the same name village ceased to exist. Rječina flows through the canyon almost half of her length. In Rijeka, the river branches in two parts: Mrtvi kanal (the old basin) and the new canal which was made in 19th century when Mrtvi kanal was used as a harbour. Of sights, the most famous is Gaspar's watermill (Gašparov mlin) in Martinovo Selo which was renewed in 90s. Of fauna the most noticeable are trout and river crabs.

Sava Dolinka
The Sava Dolinka is a headwater of the Sava River in northwestern Slovenia. The 45 kilometres (28 mi) long Sava Dolinka starts as Nadiža Creek in the Planica Valley under Mount Zadnja Ponca in the Julian Alps, at an elevation of 1222 m, close to the Italian border. The stream goes underground soon after its source and breaks out again after 5 km at an elevation of 842 m in Zelenci, near Kranjska Gora. Savinja
The Savinja is a river in northeast Slovenia which flows mostly in the Upper and Lower Savinja valley (Slovene: Zgornja in Spodnja Savinjska dolina) and through the cities of Celje and Laško. The Savinja is the main river of the Savinja Alps (Sln. Savinjske Alpe). It flows into Sava River at the town of Zidani Most. It has often flooded, such as in the 1960s, 1990, and 1995. The Savinja has a length of 96 km.
The stream is created by Rinka Falls which flows along a regulated riverbed to the lower end of the Logar Valley, where it flows into with Jezera Creek, from which point it becomes the Savinja River. This spring has been proclaimed a natural heritage object, while Rinka Falls is one of the most beautiful and best known waterfalls in Slovenia. It is the highest waterfall of the 20 waterfalls in the Logar Valley and is visited throughout the year. In the winter time it is popular for the ice-climbers. The best view of the waterfall is from the peak of Kamnik Saddle (Sln. Kamniško sedlo).

The Slunjčica (natives also call it Slušnica) is a river, which flows through the Kordun region in central Croatia. It partly flows underground through porous karst (limestone soil) and surfaces in the vicinity of the city of Slunj. Smederevo (Serbian Cyrillic: Смедерево, pronounced [smêderevo]) is a city and municipality in Serbia, on the right bank of the Danube, about 40 km downstream of the capital Belgrade. According to official results of the 2011 census, the city has a population of 107,528. It is the administrative center of the Podunavlje District.
Its history starts in the 1st century BC, with the conquerings of the Roman Empire, when there existed a town called Vinceia. The modern city traces its roots back to the late Middle Ages when it was the capital (1430–1439 and 1444–1459) of the last independent Serbian state before the Ottoman conquest.
In Serbian, the city is known as Smederevo (Смедерево), in Latin, Romanian and Greek as Semendria, in Hungarian as Szendrő or Vég-Szendrő, in Turkish as Semendire.
In the 7th millennium BC, the Starčevo culture existed for a millennia, succeeded by the 6th millennium BC Vinča culture that prospered in the region.
The Paleo-Balkan tribes of Dacians and Thracians emerged in the area in the 2nd millennia BC, with the Celtic Scordisci raiding the Balkans in the 3rd century BC.

South Tyrol

Soča
The Soča (in Slovene) or Isonzo (in Italian) (other names Friulian: Lusinç, archaic German: Sontig, Latin: Aesontius or Sontius) is a 138 kilometres (86 mi) long river that flows through western Slovenia (96 kilometres or 60 miles) and northeastern Italy (43 kilometres or 27 miles). An Alpine river in character, its source lies in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at an elevation of 876 metres (2,874 ft). The river runs past the towns of Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Kanal ob Soči, Nova Gorica (where it is crossed by the Solkan Bridge) and Gorizia, entering the Adriatic Sea close to the Italian town of Monfalcone.
The present course of the river is the result of several dramatic changes that occurred during the past 2,000 years. According to the Roman historian Strabo, the river named Aesontius which in Roman times flowed past Aquileia to the Adriatic Sea was essentially the Natisone and Torre river system. In 585, a landslide cut off the upper part of the Natisone riverbed, causing its avulsion and subsequent stream capture by the Bontius river. The original subterrenean discharge of the Bontius into the Timavo became obstructed, and another avulsion returned the new watercourse into the bed of the lower Natisone. During the next centuries the estuary of this new river — the Soča — moved eastward until it captured the short coastal river Sdobba, through which the Soča now discharges into the Adriatic Sea. The former estuary (of the Aesontius, and the early Soča/Isonzo) in the newly formed lagoon of Grado became an independent coastal rivulet.

Spöl
The Akua Granda (also spelled Aqua Granda) is the ancient name of Livigno's main river. It is now called Spöl, although this name designates the river after it crosses the Swiss border.
Despite being in Italy, Akua Granda is a tributary of the Inn, and the Danube, and not of the Po river. In other words, this valley is on the northern side of the Alps' watershed. In this area geographical and political boundaries do not coincide.
Due to an international treaty, an artificial lake, Lago di Livigno, was created by Engadiner Kraftwerke in the 1960s, with a dam on the border. This caused the flooding of part of the ancient village of Livigno. Despite indemnisation, not all inhabitants were willing to leave this part of the valley.
The reservoir has a capacity of 164 million m³ (approx. 215 million cubic yards). Its minimum and maximum water levels above sea level are at 1,700 metres (5,577 ft)and 1,805 metres (5,922 ft) respectively. Since its construction, this lake had been off-limits for any activity, such as wind-surfing or rowing, until the summer of 2005, when Italy's National Rowing team was authorized to train on the lake. Studva
The Studva (Croatian: Studva; Serbian: Studva or Студва) is a river in eastern Croatia and northern Serbia, a 37 km-long right tributary to the Bosut river. It flows entirely within the Syrmia region of both Croatia and Serbia (Vojvodina).
The Studva originates from the marshes of the western Syrmia in Croatia (Spačva sub-region), near the village of Gunja. It is a slow, meandering river and spills over into several marshes as it flows by the villages of Đurići, Drenovci, Soljani and Vrbanja.
There is a canal from the Studva to the river Spačva.
At the medieval ruins of the town of Zvezdangrad, the Studva becomes a border river between Croatia and Serbia (total length as a border or Serbian river is 18 km). At the village of Morović the Studva empties into the Bosut river.
Just like the Bosut itself, the Studva is a satellite flow to the Sava river and uses the same, ancient (fossile) Sava's river bed. The river is navigable for 18 km for smaller vessels, drains an area of 355 km² and belongs to the Black Sea drainage basin.

Toblach
Toblach (Italian: Dobbiaco) is a comune/Gemeinde (municipality) in South Tyrol in the Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, located in the Puster Valley about 110 km northeast of the city of Trento and about 70 km northeast of the city of Bolzano, on the border with Austria.
As of November 30, 2010, it had a population of 3,283 and an area of 126.6 km².
The municipality of Toblach contains the frazione (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Aufkirchen/Santa Maria and Wahlen/San Silvestro.

The escutcheon is divided vertically into two parts with a central circle, the colors are red and white alternating. It was the arms of the Lords of Herbstenburg who bought the castle in 1509 and ruled the village. The emblem was granted in 1967.

Trebišnjica
The Trebišnjica River is a river in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It used to be a sinking river, 96.5 km (60.0 mi) long above the ground. With a total length of 187 km (116 mi) above and under the ground, it was one of the longest sinking rivers in the world.
As it flows in an area of karst (limestone), the Trebišnjica actually represents a very complex system of the above and underground streams. It originates in Bosnia and Herzegovina from two streams from the Lebršnik and Čemerno mountains:
The river shortly re-appears in the Fatničko Polje (Field of Fatnica) under the name of Fatnička reka (River of Fatnica), only to sink again after a short flow above the ground.
After a total underground flow of some {convert|30|km|abbr=on}}, the waters of the sinking Fatnička reka re-appear as a series of very powerful cave springs near the town of Bileća, which are joined into one river, the Trebišnjica, the most important river in eastern Hercegovina. The river flows to the south, through the depression of Miruša. On the southernmost part of the depression, the river is dammed at the village of Gornje Grnčarevo and completely flooded upstream by the artificial Lake Bileća. Nearly all of the eastern bank of the lake belongs to Montenegro.

Triglav Lakes Valley
The Triglav Lakes Valley (Slovene: Dolina Triglavskih jezer) is a rocky hanging valley in the Julian Alps in Slovenia, below the sheer sides of Mount Tičarica and Mount Zelnarica southwest of Triglav. The valley is also called the Seven Lakes Valley (Slovene: Dolina sedmerih jezer), although there are ten and not seven lakes in the valley. It is above the tree line and is geologically alpine karst; therefore it has also been termed the Sea of Stone Valley (Slovene: Dolina kamnitega morja).
The lowest lake is Black Lake (Črno jezero) at an elevation of 1,294 metres (4,245 ft) above sea level; it is above the rocky slope of the Komarča rock face. The Alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris), endemic to the Alps, lives in it. Below Mount Tičarica (elevation 1,676 m (5,499 ft)) there are two interconnected lakes known as Double Lake (Dvojno jezero). At an elevation of 1,838 m (6,030 ft) lies Big Lake (Veliko jezero) or Ledvica Lake (Jezero v Ledvici). This is the largest and the deepest of these lakes. The highest is Podstenje Lake (Jezero v Podstenju), which is located at an elevation of 1,993 m (6,539 ft).

Tuhinj Valley
The Tuhinj Valley is a valley in Slovenia linking the Celje Basin with the Ljubljana Basin in an east-west direction along the courses of the Nevljica and Motnišnica rivers.
The western part of the valley was formed by the watershed of the Nevljica, flowing into the Kamnik Bistrica, and the narrower, eastern part by the Motnišnica, a tributary of the Savinja River. Their drainage divide is at the Kozjak Pass at an elevation of 655 m between Cirkuše v Tuhinju and Špitalič. The largest settlements in the valley include Laze v Tuhinju, Šmartno v Tuhinju, and Motnik. The large number of old settlements points to the fact that the valley was an important thoroughfare in the Middle Ages and later as the passage between Lower Styria and Upper Carniola.
Until the mid-20th century brown coal was mined in the valley near Motnik. Tourism has only recently started to develop with the building of the Snovik Spa.

Tulcea
Tulcea (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈtult͡ʃe̯a]; Bulgarian, Russian and Ukrainian: Тулча, Tulcha; Greek: Aegyssus, Turkish: Hora-Tepé or Tolçu) is a city in Dobrogea, Romania. It is the administrative center of Tulcea county, and has a population of 92,379 as of 2007. One village, Tudor Vladimirescu, is administered by the city.
Tulcea was founded in the 7th century BC^{[citation needed]} under the name of Aegyssus, mentioned in the documents of Diodorus of Sicily (3rd century BC). In his Ex Ponto, Ovid recorded a local tradition that ascribed its name to a mythical founder, Aegisos the Caspian.
After the fights from 12-15 B.C., the Romans conquered the town. They rebuilt it after their plans, their technique and architectural vision, reorganizing it. The fortified town was mentioned as late as the 10th century, in documents such as Notitia Episcopatuum or De Thematibus.
Under Byzantine rule beginning with the 5th century CE, the town was abandoned by the first half of the 7th century due to the Barbarian invasions. The former settlement's territory fell under the rule of the Bulgarian Empire (681-c.1000; 1185-14th century). Inhabitation was restored in the second half of the 10th century, as the Byzantines built a fortress on the spot after reconquering the region. The fortress was soon destroyed in 1064 by an attack of the Uzes, however some inhabitation continued. A settlement, larger than the one in the 11th century, is archaeologically attested beginning with the 14th century. The Ottoman rule was imposed around 1420, and would last for the following four centuries.

Upper Sava Valley
The Upper Sava Valley (Slovene: Zgornjesavska dolina) is an alpine valley in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. The Sava Dolinka River flows along it. It begins in Rateče at an elevation of 870 m and ends at Moste at 560 m. It is the geographical border between the Julian Alps and the Karavanke Alps. It was created on a tectonic fault that runs down the middle of the valley. Its geomorphological forms are a result of the actions of the river and glaciers. A number of smaller valleys lead into it from both sides.

Varaždin was declared a free royal borough in 1209 by the Hungarian King Andrew II. The town became the economic and military centre of northern Croatia. Due to Turkish raids, the town was structured defensively around the old fortress, and acquired the shape of a typical medieval Wasserburg. In the early 13th century, the Knights Hospitaller (Croatian: Ivanovci) came to Varaždin, where they built the church and a monastery.

Vidin
Vidin (Bulgarian: Видин, archaically spelled as Widdin in English) is a port town on the southern bank of the Danube in northwestern Bulgaria. It is close to the borders with Serbia and Romania, and is also the administrative centre of Vidin Province, as well as of the Metropolitan of Vidin (since 870). Vidin is the 19th town by population in Bulgaria, but serious demographic problems have been experienced in the area during the last two decades. The number of the residents of the city reached its peak in the period 1988-1991 when exceeded 65,000. Vuzenica
Vuzenica is a town and a municipality in northern Slovenia. It lies on the right bank of the Drava River and extends south into the Pohorje Hills. The area was part of the traditional region of Styria. It is now included in the Carinthia statistical region. Vuzenica was first mentioned as a settlement in written documents dating to 1238, but archaeological evidence points to much older settlement of the area with a Roman period burial ground in the town. Of the 13th-century castle above the settlement, only parts of the walls survive.
The parish church in the town is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maribor. It was built in the mid-13th century on the site of a 12th-century church. It was partly rebuilt and extended in the 14th and 15th centuries. A second church in the town is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and dates to the late 14th century.

Váh
The Váh (German: Waag;Hungarian: Vág;Polish: Wag) is the longest river in Slovakia. A left tributary of the Danube river, the Váh is 406 km long, including its Čierny Váh branch. Its two sources, the Biely Váh (White Váh) and the Čierny Váh (Black Váh), are located in the High Tatras and Low Tatra mountains, respectively, and it flows over northern and western Slovakia and finally feeds into the Danube near Komárno. The left tributaries are Demänovka, Revúca, Ľubochnianka, Turiec, Rajčanka and Nitra rivers, and the right tributaries are Belá, Orava, Varínka, Kysuca, Biela voda, Vlára, Dubová, Dudváh and Malý Dunaj rivers. In late medieval time it was a property of Stibor of Stiboricz and his son Stibor of Beckov of the Clan of Ostoja.
It includes canals, artificial dams (Čierny Váh, Liptovská Mara, Bešeňová, Krpeľany, Žilina, Hričov, Nosice, Sĺňava, Madunice, Kráľová and Selice) and 16 hydropower stations, whose construction started in the 1930s and increased after World War II. The main Slovak limited-access motorway is situated along the Váh (Bratislava - Trenčín - Považská Bystrica - Žilina and Ružomberok - Poprad), as well as the main railway Bratislava - Žilina - Košice.

Zrmanja
Zrmanja (pronounced [zř̩maɲa]) is a river in southern Lika and northern Dalmatia, Croatia. It is 69 km (43 mi) long and its basin covers an area of 907 km² (350 sq mi).
It was known to the ancient Romans as Tedanius. The spring of Zrmanja is located in southern part of Lika under Postak - the southern peak of Pljesevica mountain, and close to south end of Velebit mountain. It is characteristic for its spring located on the bottom of very steep, almost 200m high funnel shape rock called Misije. It flows southward through the narrow and long arable valley which encircles the southern end of Velebit through a 200-metre-deep canyon, and then turns westwards, reaches Obrovac, and after a few kilometers flows into the Adriatic sea in the bay named Novigradsko more.

In the late 80s the Riverfree Club and Huck Finn Adventure Company pioneered commercial canoe, kayak and raft trips - one-day excursions and multi-day tours with camping. They proved that Zrmanja with its tributary Krupa is one of the most beautiful rivers of Europe. In the 90s the Velebit area is declared a nature park. Rafting trips on Zrmanja take place in spring and autumn, while kayaks and canoes are used during low water level period of July and August.

Čabranka
Čabranka is a small river on the border between Slovenia and Croatia. It is 17.5 kilometres (10.9 mi) long and is a left tributary of the river Kupa. Its source is just west of the settlement of Podplanina in the Loški Potok municipality in southern Slovenia and just north of the Croatian village of Čabar from which it gets its name. Česma
Česma is a river in central Croatia, the left tributary of the river Lonja-Trebež. It is 124 km (77 mi) long, and its catchment area is 2,608 km² (1,007 sq mi).
Created by merging streams Grđevica and Barna at 45°43′32″N 17°03′01″E / 45.72556°N 17.05028°E / 45.72556; 17.05028 near the village of Pavlovac in the municipality of Veliki Grđevac. Česma basin is fan-shaped and formed by a number of streams rising on the slopes of Bilogora and Moslavačka gora hills. Southern sides of Bilogora slightly goes downhill, rugged with numerous ravines and gullies, steeply and deeply cut in. On the sides appears numerous springs, that in the dry part of the year losing water.
It has a small drop (small difference in altitude between the source and the mouth) which was causing frequent floods before the regulation of the riverbed. The area around the watercourse of Česma till a hundred years ago was subject of flooding, which is why it was swampy. After that, Česma river and its tributaries was channelized, embankments were built for flood protection, and the soil is dried to obtain arable land as well as the fight against malaria.

Štrbački Buk
The Štrbački Buk waterfalls are on the Una River, spanning the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The closest settlements to the waterfalls are the villages of Donji Štrbci and Kestenovac on the Croatian side, and the villages of Doljani and Ćukovi on the Bosnian side.

The Ščavnica (german: Stainz) is a 56 km-long river in Lower Styria, Slovenia. It sources near Zgornja Velka and flows along Slovenske gorice towards southeast. Žitný ostrov, also called Veľký Žitný ostrov (Great Rye Island) (German: Große Schüttinsel or Great Schütt Island, Hungarian: Csallóköz) to differentiate it from Malý Žitný ostrov (Small Rye Island) (German: Kleine Schüttinsel or or Little Schütt Island, Hungarian: Szigetköz), is a river island in southwestern Slovakia, extending from Bratislava to Komárno. It lies between the Danube and its tributary Little Danube and is a major part of the Danubian Flat. It is the biggest river island in Europe with an area of 1,886 km², being 84 km long and 15 – 30 km wide.
The main towns on the island are Komárno, Dunajská Streda, and Šamorín. The island is an important reservoir of drinking water and an agricultural region.^{[citation needed]}
Southern parts of Žitný ostrov by the Danube are protected by Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area.

Drava or Drave (Hungarian: Dráva; German: Drau; Italian, Croatian and Slovene: Drava) is a river in southern Central Europe, a tributary of the Danube. It sources in Toblach/Dobbiaco, Italy, and flows east through East Tirol and Carinthia in Austria, into Slovenia (142 km),^[1] and then southeast, passing through Croatia and forming most of the border between Croatia and Hungary, before it joins the Danube near Osijek.

In the ancient times the river was called Dravus. The name is most likely Celtic or pre-Celtic in origin (see Old European hydronymy). The Drava and Spöl are the only two rivers that originate in Italy and drain into the Danube drainage basin. It is the fourth largest and longest Danube tributary.^[2] The Gail in Austria, the Meža and Dravinja in Slovenia, and the Bednja in Croatia from the right; the Gurk and the Lavant in Austria, and the Mur (near Legrad) in Croatia from the left are its main tributaries.

The Drava flows through Innichen/San Candido in Italy, Lienz, Spittal an der Drau, Villach, and Ferlach in Austria, Dravograd, Vuzenica, Muta, Ruše, Maribor, Ptuj, and Ormož in Slovenia, Varaždin and Osijek in Croatia, and Barcs in Hungary, being navigable for about 90 km from Čađavica in Croatia to its outfall.

The hydrological parameters of Drava are regularly monitored in Croatia at Botovo, Terezino Polje, Donji Miholjac and Osijek.^[3]
