Fugitive Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi on Monday rejected the death sentence handed to him by a Baghdad court on charges of running death squads. Hashemi earlier described the trial as a political vendetta against him. Guest Stuart Varney took apart the various hypocrisies of the deal, incredulously noting that the former vice president of the United States has sold his network to a "clearly anti-American news channel." The segment recalled Gore's remarks this past November when he pointed to the Clinton administration's argument that we should all do our fair share. A suicide bomb attack outside a prison in Iraq has killed seven security personnel in Taji just a few miles north of capital Baghdad. Officials say the latest incident on Tuesday was part of an attempted prison break. An increase in attacks across Iraq over the past six months is prompting warnings from government officials that groups linked with al-Qaeda are coming back. Statements such as these, however, are symptomatic of a confused and contradictory foreign policy on Syria, expert Lawrence Freeman told RT. Panetta, currently on tour of the Middle East, said in a CNN interview that the US is ramping up economic and diplomatic pressure "to have Assad step down and to transition to a democratic form of government." At the same time, the US Defense Secretary noted that it would be "important to maintain as much military and police" as possible after Assad leaves. Lawrence Freeman, editor of Executive Intelligence Review magazine, believes Panetta's statements indicate that Washington lacks a comprehensive policy in Syria, making it all the more the possible that the war could spill over and grasp the entire region.
