Counting the Cost - Chavez: The end of a socialist revolution?
As Venezuela mourns its former president Hugo Chavez, we look at his legacy and exactly where the billions of dollars in oil money ended up. And where will the nations which benefited from his largesse go now? Chavez was seen as a man who courted all sorts of attention but certainly fought the corner of the poor, in lifting their standards of living, mostly on the back of a global oil boom. During his time in power, Venezuela earned almost $1 trillion, according the Hoover Institute. And many countries in the region have depended on Chavez's generous economic aid, which was funded by Venezuela's oil reserves. So with Chavez gone, will this aid hold up? And where did that money come from?

Is a college degree worth the cost? You decide.
President Obama promotes the myth that everyone must go to college. That if you don't go, your life will be ruined -- that you will end up waiting tables, or trapped in some other mundane occupation. The truth is, even with a college degree, you may still end up waiting tables, you'll just begin your "career" four or five years later, tens of thousands of dollars in debt.
Here is an example of some of the plumb jobs college grads were able to land during the Obama administration. Not just liberal arts majors mind you, but graduates with degrees in mathematics, robotics, neuroscience, engineering, accounting, business administration, economics, biology, communications, graphic design, marketing, and linguistics.
Of course when it comes to education, it's not just the Obama administration that deserves a failing grade. For years, politicians of both parties have pandered to students by promising more aid in the form of direct or subsidized student loans. As a result, colleges and universities are freed from competitive forces that would otherwise keep tuition low. Easy access to cheap credit enables students to bid up tuition, benefiting the educational establishment at their expense. Politicians secure student's votes by promising relief from skyrocketing tuition by providing even more loans. Ironically, the loans themselves are the very reason tuition is so high in the first place.
Before the Federal Government got involved, college degrees were much more affordable, and ambitious students from poorer families could easily work their way through. In addition, as fewer high school graduates actually went on to college, not only were college degrees much less expensive to obtain, they were far more valuable to have. With so many high school grads now going on to college, a college degree is actually less valuable in today's job market, despite its inflated price tag, than was a high school diploma in the 1950s. The only solution is to get the Federal Government completely out of higher education, and let the free market fix what the government broke!
For those of you who feel a college degree is essential to financial success consider John D Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Rockefeller dropped out of high school and began working full-time at age 16. Carnegie didn't even go to high school and began working full-time at age 13. Vanderbilt dropped out of school at age 11, and by age 16 had started his own ferry business. All three were born poor and became self-made billionaires, who attained estimated net worths (in today's dollars) of approximately $670, $300. and $175 billion respectively. To put those numbers into perspective, the richest living American, Bill Gates, who dropped out of Harvard during his sophomore year, has an estimated net worth of just $65 billion.

Is the Cost of Living Really Rising?
According to Prof. Steve Horwitz, one contemporary economic myth is that the cost of living has consistently risen for Americans over the past century. In fact, prices are higher today than they were 100 years ago. However, prices today have been heavily influenced by inflation. One way of avoiding inflationary distortions is to look at amount of labor hours required to make a purchase. Using this analysis, Prof. Horwitz finds that most goods and services have never been cheaper.

The Cost of Silence
Perhaps the most amazing fact of the rise of the Nazi party was the silence of the German people. After all, it took several years for Adolph Hitler to amass complete power. So how did the fanatical Nazi party silence the German people? Of course, we now know it was done through the control of information, and the use of intimidation on those that even considered the Nazi's to be a problem. We see this today in the way the media portrays the Tea Party. Or how about Mitt Romney, you know, the guy that killed Joe Soptics' wife, was going to take away women's rights, and by the end of the campaign, pretty much hated every single racial group in America. Just like in Germany, the majority of Americans believed this. But the most destructive form of indoctrination is currently taking place in our educational system.

The Cost of Waiting
Hi.
Have you ever wondered what the cost of waiting is? We have.
A USA Today survey found that a majority of Americans wouldn't wait in line for more than 15 minutes.
One in five respondents admitted that they had been rude to someone serving them "too slowly". And half of all customers would never return to an establishment that kept them waiting.
Things are like that in the online world too. One in four users won't wait for a page that needs over four seconds to load. Pages that take over 10 seconds to load can kiss half of mobile web users goodbye.
Oh, and the big one: 40% of mobile shoppers will leave an e-commerce site that doesn't load in 3 seconds. Research shows that a 1-second delay in page response can cause a 7% reduction in customer conversions.
For Amazon.com, for example, that would mean losing 1.6 billion dollars a year -- all because of a one-second delay in responsiveness.
So then. You say you want to upgrade your site with the snazziest, trendiest new features that slow it down by "just" one second?
Think about it.

Staging Disaster: The Cost of Fire, Wind and Ice
Every year, the insurance industry pays out billions of dollars in claims over damages from natural disasters such as tornadoes, floods and hail storms. The best way for the industry to anticipate the cost of those disasters? Create a little havoc themselves. (Source: Bloomberg)

Counting the Cost - Money for nothing
From Lehman to Libor, scandal and even criminal activity has stalked the banking sector, so are the bankers, and the banking system, out of control? And with banks failing the West, does Islamic finance have some answers to the world's money troubles? Joining Counting the Cost to discuss these issues are: Professor Jem Bendell of the University of Cumbria and Tarek El Diwany, a senior partner at the Islamic investement and finance consultancy Zest Advisory. We also speak to David Fishwick, about his decision to take on the banks and the system which regulates them, to set up his own small-time bank for everyday people - the 'Bank of Dave'

Inside Story Americas - The cost of America's prison industry
There are more prisoners in the United States than any other nation in the world. The country makes up five percent of the world population, but accounts for 25 percent of its prison population. And over the last three decades the number held in US federal prisons has jumped by nearly 80 percent. So, what is the impact of the high incarceration rate on the penal system and on poor communities? To discuss this, Inside Story Americas with presenter Shihab Rattansi is joined by guests: David Fathi, the director of the American Civil Liberties Union National Prison Project; Matthew Mangino, a former district attorney in Pennsylvania; and Marc Mauer, the executive director of The Sentencing Project, and author of the book Race to Incarcerate.

Winner of the 2005 Prix Italia
The work of the DV8 Theatre company, The Cost of Living is a contemporary dance based on the issues of how we judge each other.
'Exceptional..nothing less than visual poetry' - Time out
NEWSON TRIUMPHS AGAIN Performances are everywhere excellent. The production is visually superlative. The Financial Times
PHYSICAL PERFECTION The best contemporary choreography you will see anywhere a brilliant piece of physical theatre. The Stage
The Cost of Living was shot on location in a typical, old-fashioned and faded English seaside resort where the summer season has petered to an end, and an air of desertion hangs over the
town. Eddie and David are disillusioned street performers. Eddie is tough, confrontational and not afraid to defend his belief in justice, respect and honesty. David is a legless dancer who is quietly determined not to let his disability or societys prejudices get in his way. A series of inter-linked scenes show Eddie and Davids encounters with other people; some are incredibly hard-hitting, others exhilarating because of their sheer physicality. Issues are raised about how we judge others and how we, in turn, value ourselves through physical metaphors. The film challenges notions of dance and demonstrates how expansive and individual the medium can be.
The work of DV8 Physical Theatre is about taking risks both physical and aesthetic. It is about personal politics, about breaking down barriers between dance and theatre and, above all, about communicating ideas and feelings clearly and unpretentiously. The company tells stories through extended naturalistic movement in a radical yet accessible way, shunning linear narrative and rejecting the traditional conventions of ballet and modern dance.

Counting the Cost - Beyond the fiscal cliff
On the show this week we take a good look at the US debt situation. Yes it avoided the much-vaunted 'fiscal cliff' - but at what long-term cost? And what do we really know about US debt? The debts in many European economies have been well documented, but if the $16tn budget deficit in the US is not addressed at some point, what sort of effect will that have?
