add video playlist Only two days before EU leaders will hold talks on the next 7-year EU budget, MEPs on Tuesday threatened to veto the eventual agreement if further cuts are made. Some member states, like the UK, the Netherlands and Sweden, have expressed their wish to slash the budget by an additional 30 billion euros. They argue that EU expenditure should be in line with national austerity policies. "Today's proposal is actually an act of political resignation, and we are going to reject it", EPP leader Joseph Daul said. (...)I fear there is actual budget 'fraud' which is going to be perpetrated on Friday. Because the budget commitments are going to be put at the level desired by the cohesion countries and the payments will be at the level desired by contributor countries.", ALDE's leader Guy Verhofstadt said. The threat came after an unusual visit by French President Francois Hollande to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. After positioning himself as a defender of growth and European solidarity, Hollande took aim at the UK's Prime Minister David Cameron and reaffirmed his position against the UK rebate. Cameron has repeatedly said that getting a rebate is a pre-condition for any agreement on the EU budget. "(...) It is legitimate for countries with serious deficits to rebounce their public finances, France supports that approach but at the same time we need to be asking Europe to try and maintain a level of spending that could keep economic activity going.", French President ...

MEPS threaten to veto EU budget deal
MEPS threaten to veto EU budget deal

  • Duration: 3:10
  • Updated: 07 Feb 2013
Only two days before EU leaders will hold talks on the next 7-year EU budget, MEPs on Tuesday threatened to veto the eventual agreement if further cuts are made.

Chairman of REAL Movement, Ilgar Mammadov, will run for presidency in October elections, said REAL executive secretary Natig Jafarli at today's press conference held in IRFS Media Center. REAL Movement will seek Mammadov's release and then start his pre-election campaign. Erkin Gadirli, head of the REAL Movement Assembly, said that Ilgar Mammadov's and Tofig Yagublu's arrests do not differ from the arrests of oppositionists, as it is part of the same repressive policy. "Peaceful protests are suppressed in a violent manner. But citizens should not get afraid. Therefore Mammadov's and Yagublu's arrest does not intimidate anyone" said Gadirli. REAL will soon announce its election platform. The Movement called on the Council of Europe, OSCE, European Union and European Parliament not to play political games in Azerbaijan and not to turn the election into a subject of political bargaining. Another REAL member Altay Goyushov said he had expected Mammadov's arrest. "But it does not intimidate us. We know what to do in such a situation" said Goyushov. According to expert Zohrab Ismayil, the purpose of arresting Ilgar Mammadov and Tofig Yagublu was to divert the public attention from Ismayilli. "We plan to hold protests in connection with the issue of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience" said Ismayil. Tural Abbasli from Musavat Party and Anvar Agazadeh from Umid Party suggested to combine efforts to secure the release of detainees. They both condemned the government's ...
