Hitbodedut:
Prayer in
Seclusion ... Finding oneself.
Hitbodedut is personal prayer in your own words - is life-changing, and the core of
Rabbi Nachman's teachings. Hitbodedut: The ancient
Jewish practice of secluding one’s self with the
Creator of the universe and pouring out one’s soul in heartfelt prayer. Hitbodedut is the highest asset and greater than everything. That is, to set aside for oneself at least an hour or more for secluding oneself in some room or a field, and, using your own words to speak to the
Creator!
The most powerful spiritual practices are often the simplest ones – practices anyone can do if they wish to. Hitbodedut means praying and meditating in seclusion – and it implies a very intimate and private communion with the
Holy One, the source of our being. Hashem created you and so He wants you to be the real you. By being authentic when you speak to Him, you worship him as you Creator.
Man was created to be happy.
Sadness and Laziness are the key to a long list of other troubles in life.
One should be very careful to make this a daily practice, at a scheduled time. But the rest of the day one should be happy, as mentioned above. The benefit of this practice is extraordinarily great. It is an extremely good path and guideline for drawing closer to God, because it is a universal guideline that encompasses everything.
Likutey Moharan II, 84,
Rebbe Nachman teaches that the main connection and devekut (cleaving) to G-d is accomplished only through prayer. prayers from his feelings and longings yield not a single word, so that all his attempts at hitbodedut result in frustration—even then, he must not see it as time and effort wasted. When this happens, the Rebbe says, let him make this—the frustration and failure—the very topic of his prayer. Let him beg G-d to take pity on him and open his mouth, so that he might express what is buried deep within his heart.
Hitbodedut /
Personal Tefillah, prayer, is the primary tool for any change, spiritual and physical.
Ideally, during Tefillah our
Higher Self, our soul takes over and gives us the direction to pray.
This is the meaning of short verse from Tehillim (51:17) we say before the Amidah prayer:
“Hashem, open my lips that my mouth may declare your praise”.
Our Lower
Self (body/nefesh) supplies the energy for the Tefillah, our Higher Self gives us the desire/direction, and the process works in the unison towards the same goal of elevating the world, changing all of “me” and all of reality.
