Invasio Barbarorum: The Historical Battle of Taginae 552 AD, Gen Narses vs King Totila
During the reconquest of Italy & Africa by the eastern Romans (Byzantines) Emperor Justinian I sent his best generals Flavius Belisarius & Narses each with an army to deal with the barbarians & regain lost territory. General Narses & his 23000 men including foederati where marching into Italy on the Via Flaminnia when suddenly they encountered an Ostrogothic army led by their King Totila but King Totila had only some 13000 men & had to wait for his son Teia with 5000 more reinforcements so he started to use some delaying tactics till his son arrives & immediatly started to negotiate. Another delaying tactic was sending a Byzantine deserter named Coccas that fought for him fiercly to challenge any Byzantine to single combat in no man's land. One of Narses' Bodyguards an Armenian named Anzalas answered the challenge, as Coccas was huge & fearless he charged at Anzalas but before impact Anzalas swerved his horse & stabbed Coccas on his side. Then his son arrived & his army increased to 18000 which most of it were formiddable Gothic heavy cavalry. Narses wasn't a fool he ordered his men to form a crescent formation similar to Hannibal's. He deployed the foederati & allies in the center, his Byzantine infantry on the sides & his archers on both wings supported by cavalry. Knowing that the Byzantine archers are dangerous King Totila wanted to avoid casualties by them as much as possible by ordering a sudden all-out charge while the Byzantines were refreshing themselvs but still ...

The Byzantine commonwealth: Ghassanids - The Christian Arabs
The Christian Arabian kingdom of Ghassān The Ghassānid; prominent as a Byzantine ally (Symmachos/ foederati) in the 6th century AD in Oriens. From its strategic location in portions of modern Syria, Jordan, and Israel, they have protected the spice trade route from the south of the Arabian Peninsula at Yemen (Arabia Felix) and acted as a buffer against the desert Bedouin invaders. The Ghassanids, who thus came to power as client-kings of the Romans around the year 530 AD, In the history of Syriac Christianity they were the champions of Mono-physitism, and the representatives of Christianity to their countrymen in the peninsula. In the history of culture they had the double function of being patrons of Arabic poetry and unsuspecting middlemen of Byzantinism (Christian Romanization) to the Arabs outside the limes. The monasteries penetrated deep in the heart of Arabia, into regions to which the church could not penetrate. Thus the monastery turned out to be more influential than the church in the spiritual life of the Arabs, especially in the sphere of indirect Byzantine influence in the Peninsula. The monastery was also the meeting place of two ideals; Christian philanthropy and Arab hospitality The Ghassānid venerated Saint Sergius and protected the Christian pilgrims to the shrine of St Sergius . Ghassān remained a Byzantine vassal state until its rulers were overthrown by the Muslims in the 7th century. Although the Ghassanid realm has vanished; it's people would still ...

Barbaren - Die Ostgoten [1/5]

Mod's History The mod was started by Atilla Reloaded under the name of "Atilla's Real Late Roman Army Mod", because at that time it was just a pack of more realistic new models and skins for late romans only. These models were originally created for the now defunct Imperia Romana (whose members are now working on the M2TW mod The Gathering Storm). The 3rd version of this pack could be perceived somewhat as the real start of the mod: the pack had his first fans, and not only Romans but even Sassanids had their new models. Soon the Franks, Saxons and Celts were redone. Some little graphic work started with the insertion of new faction symbols. Atilla Reloaded was then the only modder, as it also clear by the name of the pack. In search of some coder to add a building to recruiting Foederati units, to insert in his 4th version, Mylae offered to help; other players also started to give lots of suggestions and asked for historical accuracy. Suggestions from Mylae about starting the mod in 410 were accepted, and the forthcoming version had several new changes: almost all facions had new units, and the modpack 4.0 get the name of Invasio Barbarorum - Flagellum Dei 4. A 4.1 version soon appeared to fix some bugs. It was clear that at this point what was needed was just a continuous work to make the mod better. This version however had still Sarmatians and Roxolani, and started in 363 CE, because took time to implement the numerous suggestions from several players. The map ...
