Tutorial "Biped Animation Basics" Part 1 -3DS MAX
Hey guys, I know I've been a bit inactive lately bc of projects so I figured it would be good to start a tutorial series since a lot of people have asked for them.
In this tutorial I cover some biped basics to get you acquainted and familiar with how to setup and use the biped system. I will continue to expand on how to animate with biped in later videos.
________________________________________________________________
Stuff that I cover in this video:
Creating/setting up biped
Different types of keyframes in the "Key Info" rollout
copy/paste rollout
________________________________________________________________
Stuff that I will cover in future videos:
Biped animation link constraints
IK and FK (inverse and forward kinematics)
TCB rollout (the biped curve editor)
Biped animation layers
motion capture and combining multiple files
Some overall tips and tricks for animating

HRP3L-JSK: High Power Biped Robot
The University of Tokyo's JSK Lab, with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has modified a Kawada Industries HRP-3L biped robot. The HRP3L-JSK is able to calculate 170 stable postures in 1 millisecond, and uses capacitor-driven electric motors to achieve faster, more powerful movement. It can also jump 44 cm (17 inches).

The dinosaur-like biped robot TITRUS-III
The dinosaur-like biped robot, TITRUS is based on the concept to realize a practical application. The features are 1) realizing high dynamic stability by using a neck and a tail when it walks, 2) standing with the tail to compose a stable tripod so as to work stably and 3) enabling various work by applying the head as a manipulator. In this video, a demonstration of a miniature TITRUS implementation for walking experiment, called TITRUS-III, will be given.
TITRUS-III has totally 8-DOF(Degree Of Freedom). Each limb including two legs and a head and a tail has 2-DOF. Legs can make planar motion, and the foot angle is kept constant by an additional parallelogram mechanism. The neck and tail can swing around yaw and pitch axes. Unlike usual biped robots, the legs of TITRUS-III don't have enough DOF to move its COG(Center Of Gravity) laterally, which is needed to walk statically. Instead of the lacking leg DOFs, the neck and tail ones can substitute them because of certain amount of mass distributed to the limbs. On dynamic walk, the swinging pattern of the neck and tail is changed as inertial force comes to be more dominant factor than the position of COG in its stabilization. Optionally, by using limbs, TITRUS-III can perform dynamic turning motion successfully.
