A quick edit of a latte being made with a moka pot and an Aeroccino. Imade this video to test out iPhone 4's video recording, and iMovie for iPhone's capabilities. I spent about 20 min. on it to learn my way around iMovie for iPhone 4. IMovie was fairly straightforward after reading the built-in tips page. I had fun. Italian Moka Pot Espresso with Foam (Stovetop)
Italian Moka Pot Espresso with Foam (Stovetop)
This shows my technique for making stovetop espresso with a moka pot. The 'crema' (foam on top) is created by whipping sugar with some coffee before pouring the finished coffee into the cup. It's not the crema that you'd get from a real espresso machine but it's still good! I find that 2 parts of sugar with slightly less than 1 part coffee gives the right consistency (it takes a bit of practice). You have to use the first bit of coffee that emerges because it is thicker. The song is "40 Cups of Coffee" by Ella Mae Morse. Thanks to Jordan for filming!

(Semi) Latte Art using Moka Pot and Manual Milk Frother
(Semi) Latte Art using Moka Pot and Manual Milk Frother
True that the best Latte Art is created using pro Espresso machine and Powerful Steam Wand. Many people also said that these are essential for creating the honey-like coffee and true micro-foam in the frothed milk. However there are videos showing that with only manual milk frother you can also create decent foam for Latte Art. Here I try to get the coffee from a Bialette Moka Express and pour some pattern upon it. The color is much lighter but I guess that's due to the lighter coffee you get from such Moka Pots. In the video I used a grinder from the dorm and Lavazza beans, however normal pre-ground coffee powder can achieve this. In fact if you slightly tamp the coffee (for a single-cup pot, don't tamp for bigger pots as they seem to produce higher preessure) you get a slightly darker color coffee. (of course you can also cheat using cocoa powder). Thing is, if you're making Latte like this, or even add caramel and vanilla syrups, the coffee underlying isn't that important as the milk and syrup would cover almost all the taste. The milk frother is simply a supermarket frother (around 10€). The electronic frother (IKEA / Aerolatte) creates a much coarse and solid foam that is perfect for Latte Macchiato or Cappuccino, but the foam would be too solid and too light fro latte art. They'd float on top of the cup at the time you pour, no matter how you mix them or shake them (even with all visible bubbles gone and a silky look). Finally, this process is more about the look ...

"Stovetop espresso" is steam/water brewed coffee made in a moka pot. If you're spending a fortune on franchised espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos from Starbucks or McDonalds, you may find it far more cost-effective (and even more delicious) to make your own drinks yourself. Today's video starts you off with an introduction to the "moka pot".

Moka Pot
Moka Pot
2nd attempt at using a moka pot. This one is better than the first but this time I used home roasted beans. Unfortunately the beans were not freshly roasted. I ended up boiling some water and making a faux americano. It was pretty good, but not as good as a real americano. All music in this video is from Jason Shaw @ audionautix.com
