add video playlist Chairman of REAL Movement, Ilgar Mammadov, will run for presidency in October elections, said REAL executive secretary Natig Jafarli at today's press conference held in IRFS Media Center. REAL Movement will seek Mammadov's release and then start his pre-election campaign. Erkin Gadirli, head of the REAL Movement Assembly, said that Ilgar Mammadov's and Tofig Yagublu's arrests do not differ from the arrests of oppositionists, as it is part of the same repressive policy. "Peaceful protests are suppressed in a violent manner. But citizens should not get afraid. Therefore Mammadov's and Yagublu's arrest does not intimidate anyone" said Gadirli. REAL will soon announce its election platform. The Movement called on the Council of Europe, OSCE, European Union and European Parliament not to play political games in Azerbaijan and not to turn the election into a subject of political bargaining. Another REAL member Altay Goyushov said he had expected Mammadov's arrest. "But it does not intimidate us. We know what to do in such a situation" said Goyushov. According to expert Zohrab Ismayil, the purpose of arresting Ilgar Mammadov and Tofig Yagublu was to divert the public attention from Ismayilli. "We plan to hold protests in connection with the issue of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience" said Ismayil. Tural Abbasli from Musavat Party and Anvar Agazadeh from Umid Party suggested to combine efforts to secure the release of detainees. They both condemned the government's ...

Chairman of REAL Movement, Ilgar Mammadov, will run for presidency in October elections, said REAL executive secretary Natig Jafarli at today's press conference held in IRFS Media Center.

Short delay to EU Summit over budget deal
Short delay to EU Summit over budget deal
  • Order:
  • Duration: 0:59
  • Updated: 07 Feb 2013
EU leaders hope a short delay to the start of a two-day summit will give negotiators extra time to agree the bloc's budget for the next seven years. The first talks of the year between the 27 member states come after leaders failed to reach a deal in November. Northern European countries including Germany and the UK have demanded similar deep cuts in Brussels to those made at the national level. France has held out for the budget to be more or less maintained to allow investment that will help reverse high levels of unemployment. The expenditure ceiling, originally projected at more than a trillion euros a year, has been trimmed several times. An Italian official says he expects a further 20 billion to be agreed before the meeting gets underway. That would bring payments down to around 900-905 billion euros a year, more or less what was demanded by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron. Even if the seven year EU budget is approved by leaders, it still has to be voted on by the European parliament. MEPs are likely to oppose any deep cuts. If the deal is blocked, the current budget will be rolled over into 2014 and a new agreement may not be possible before late 2014.

As many as 54 countries have been complicit in the CIA's extraordinary rendition operations in which terrorism suspects were held in secret prisons overseas or turned over to foreign governments for interrogation, a human rights organisation has said in a report. Speaking to Al Jazeera from New York, Amrit Singh, author of the report for the Open Society Justice Initiative, said there has been a "continuum of involvement by each of these governments", ranging from hosting CIA secret prisons to the capture and detention of prisoners. These actions, Singh says, illustrate a "wide variety of complicity" from European and Middle Eastern states.
