No creature is too big or small to be affected. Such is the case for the extremely rare albino lobster that was found. Its pigment gene is missing, leading to a loss of melanin and its normal red shell. 9 - Shark: In addition to whales, albino sharks have also been found in the wild. This giant whale shark, which at 33 feet long is the largest albino ever found, gave new meaning to the term “great white shark” when it was discovered in 2008. It was fittingly spotted off the Coast of Darwin Island in the Galapagos island group. The whale shark feeds on plankton and has few if any predators, meaning this giant may be around for a long time. 8 - Raven: The raven has often been associated with evil due to its jet black feathers, however in Native American tribes, the white, or albino raven, is associated with the Great Spirit. And while beautiful stark white ravens have been spotted in the wild, their diet, and means of feeding, often mar the immaculate plumage. 7 - Owl: Throughout history owls have been seen as symbols of wisdom. However when these nocturnal birds inherit albinism, it causes even the most ardent believers to be superstitious. The albino great horned owl, also known as the Flying Tiger, is one such example. The sight of one of these stark white birds hunting prey in the middle of the night is a sight to behold. However they are fortunate that they hunt at night – it protects them from a problem plagued by many albino animals – sunlight sensitivity. 6 - Panther: Black panthers are world renowned for their jet black coat and sinister appearance, due to an overdose of melanin, the dark pigment that colors their skin. White panthers are even rarer and can take one of two forms. They can be full albinos, lacking melanin, or leucistic, lacking pigment but not melanin, which explains their white coat and colorful eyes. 5 - Gorilla: Albinism affects many in the animal kingdom, including humans closest relatives in the primate world, the gorillas. Snowflake was the one and only albino western lowland gorilla ever found. He was born in Equatorial Guinea in 1964 and lived in Spain’s Barcelona Zoo for most of his 39 years. Genetic testing revealed that his unique albino mutation resulted from inbreeding between his mother and her uncle. 4 - Peacock: The peacock is best known for its remarkably colorful plumage, yet all white peacocks have been found in the wild. While some white peacocks are the result of albinism, others simply lack pigment in their feathers due to a genetic variation. 3 - Snail: While many in the animal world exhibit albinism, some albino animals are rarer than others. Like the case of the white albino snail that was found in New Zealand. It is only the second albino snail ever documented. Experts believe the snail to be ten years old, which is impressive considering how hard it is for albino animals to conceal themselves from predators. 2 - Snake: Perhaps the inspiration for the 80’s hair band, white snakes do exist in nature, and most are due to albinism. Albino boa constrictors lack the characteristic markings of their non-pigment challenged relatives, but that doesn’t make them any less deadly. These massive snakes still possess the ability to squeeze most any prey to death, including humans, making them one of the few animals to not suffer as a result of their albinism. 1 - Pygmy Hedgehog: Because of their rarity, sometimes albino animals become rock stars in their own right. Such is the case for the pygmy hedgehog that is the star attraction for a breeder in England. The breeder travels around England and displays different animals for educational purposes, but the albino pygmy hedgehog always steals the show.
