Bobby Sherwood (May 30, 1914 in Indianapolis, Indiana – January 23, 1981 Auburn, Massachusetts) was a trumpet player, bandleader, actor and composer. He appeared in three films including Pal Joey in 1957. His sons Billy and Michael are both musicians.

Sherwood was a regular performer on The Red Buttons Show on TV in the fifties. He hosted the DuMont variety show Stars on Parade (1953-54), was the announcer for DuMont's The Morey Amsterdam Show, and the host for the ABC game show Quick As a Flash (March to May 1953). He composed the music for at least one film, Campus Sleuth (1948).

Kitty Kallen (born May 25, 1922^[1]) is an American popular singer who performed with a number of big bands in the 1940s, and scored her biggest hit in 1954 with the song "Little Things Mean a Lot".

Career[link]

Born in Philadelphia^[1][2] to a Jewish family, she won an amateur contest as a child doing imitations of popular singers of the day. While still a child, she sang on The Children's Hour, a radio program sponsored by Horn & Hardart, an automat chain. As a pre-teen, she had her own radio program on Philadelphia's WCAU, and sang with the big bands of Jan Savitt^[2] in 1936, Artie Shaw in 1938,^[3] and Jack Teagarden in 1940. While with the Teagarden band, she married Clint Garvin, who played clarinet in Teagarden's band. When Teagarden fired Garvin, Kallen left as well. The marriage was annulled.

While still in her teens, she joined the Jimmy Dorsey band, replacing Helen O'Connell. In 1944, she performed the vocals for Dorsey's number-one hit "Besame Mucho". Most of her singing assignments were in duets with Bob Eberly, and when Eberly left to go into the service toward the end of 1943, she joined Harry James' band. Between January and November of 1945, Kitty Kallen had two songs recorded with the Harry James Orchestra in the top twenty, six in Top Ten, and two at the #1 spot -- "I'm Beginning To See the Light" and "It's Been a Long, Long Time" which remains deeply associated with the end of World War II and the returning troops.

With the 1954 hit "Little Things Mean a Lot", Kallen was voted most popular female singer in Billboard and Variety polls. She followed up this song with "Chapel in the Moonlight" and a version of "True Love" for Decca. In 1959, she recorded "If I Give My Heart to You" for Columbia Records, and in 1963, she recorded a top-selling version of "My Coloring Book" for RCA. Her final album was Quiet Nights, a bossa nova-flavored release for 20th Century Fox Records. Following these successes, she was forced to retire permanently due to a lung ailment.

Kallen received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2009.

Kallen was married to Budd Granoff, a publicist, agent, and television producer, for over forty-five years, until his death in 1996. They have a son, Jonathan Granoff, who is President of the Global Security Institute and an Adjunct Professor of International Law at Widener University School of Law.

Matt Dennis (February 11, 1914–June 21, 2002) was a singer, pianist, bandleader, arranger, and writer of music for popular music songs.

He was born in Seattle, Washington. His mother was a violinist and his father a singer, and the family was in vaudeville, so he was early exposed to music. In 1933 he joined Horace Heidt's orchestra as a vocalist and pianist. Later on, he formed his own band, with Dick Haymes as vocalist. He became vocal coach, arranger, and accompanist for Martha Tilton, and worked with a new vocal group, the Stafford Sisters. Jo Stafford, one of the sisters, joined the Tommy Dorsey band in 1940 and persuaded Dorsey to hire Dennis as arranger and composer. Dennis wrote prolifically, with fourteen of his songs recorded by the Dorsey band in one year alone, including "Everything Happens to Me," an early hit for Frank Sinatra.

After three and a half years in the United States Air Force in World War II, Dennis returned to music writing and arranging, getting a boost from his old friend Dick Haymes, who hired him to be the music director for his radio program. With lyricist Tom Adair he wrote songs for Haymes' program.

Dennis made six albums most of which are out of print; however his 1953 song "Angel Eyes" (with lyricist Earl Brent) has become a frequently recorded jazz standard; less frequently recorded, but notably by Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins is "Will You Still Be Mine".

Paul Weston (March 12, 1912 – September 20, 1996) was an American pianist, arranger, composer and conductor. Weston was born Paul Wetstein in Springfield, Massachusetts.^[1] Weston has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame honoring his work in music.^[2]

Early years and work[link]

Though born in Springfield, Weston was reared in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where his family moved when he was two years old. The son of Paul Wetstein, a teacher,^[3] and Anna Grady, his parents were also interested in music. At age eight, he started piano lessons.^[4][5] He was an economics major at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where he graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1933.^[4] During his college days, Weston had his own band called "the Green Serenaders"; this allowed him to pay his own college tuition.^[4][6] Weston also learned how to play the clarinet so he could travel with the college band.^[4] He went to graduate school at Columbia University and was active in the Blue Lions, Columbia's dance band. In January 1934, Weston was seriously injured in a train accident.^[7] Unable to be active in a band, he started doing music arranging as a way to keep some involvement with music while convalescing.^[4][5][6]

When he returned to New York in the fall of 1934, he made his first sale of his work to Joe Haymes. Haymes liked Weston's work enough to ask him to do more arrangements for his band. His medley of Anything Goes songs was heard by Rudy Vallee, who contacted him and offered Weston a job as an arranger for his Fleischmann's Hour on radio. Weston was also doing arranging for Phil Harris.^[5][6]

He met Tommy Dorsey through his work with Joe Haymes. Following the Dorsey Brothers split in 1935, Tommy had yet to form an orchestra; he used the Joe Haymes Orchestra for his first engagement as a solo conductor. Weston joined Dorsey as chief arranger in 1936, holding the position until 1940.^[1][6] He then became Dinah Shore's arranger/conductor and also worked freelance for the Bob Crosby Orchestra.^[8] Weston also worked with Fibber McGee and Molly and Paul Whiteman.^[6] When Bob Crosby's band was hired for his brother Bing's film, Holiday Inn, this took him to Hollywood and into film work. He changed his name from Wetstein to Weston after his arrival in California.^[3] Weston was asked do more work for Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, and also for Betty Hutton.^[1][5][6] Subsequent films as musical director include Belle of the Yukon (1944) and Road To Utopia (1945).

Capitol and Columbia[link]

Weston met Johnny Mercer while working for Paramount in 1942; Mercer, who was preparing to start Capitol Records, wanted Weston to write for his new company. Paul wrote, arranged and directed Mercer's "Strip Polka"-the first arrangement written for the new label on April 6, 1942.^[6] On August first of that year, the 1942–44 musicians' strike began. No union musicians could record for any record company, but were able to play for live engagements and radio shows; the issue which prompted the strike was regarding record companies paying royalties to musicians.^[9] Many record companies had "stockpiled" recordings of their stars prior to the strike, planning to release them over a period of time. While the older, more established record labels were able to do this, the newly formed Capitol had no opportunity to do likewise. The strike brought the new company to a standstill until Johnny Mercer began his radio show, Johnny Mercer's Music Shop, in June 1943.^[6][10] The radio show was meant to be a venue for Capitol's talent during the Musicians' Strike.^[6] Mercer and Capitol recording artist Jo Stafford hosted the program, with Weston and his orchestra providing the music for it.^[6][10] Stafford and Weston had first met in 1938, when he was working as an arranger for Tommy Dorsey; Weston was responsible for getting Stafford's group, the Pied Pipers, an audition with Dorsey for his radio show.^[4][11] The recording ban was lifted for Capitol in October 1943 after an agreement was reached between the Musicians' Union and the record company; Weston was then able to return to the recording studio. In 1944, he became the company's music director.^[6]

Besides his work at Capitol, Weston did conducting for many radio shows during this time. He worked with Duffy's Tavern, the radio shows of Joan Davis, and Your Hit Parade.^[6] Jo Stafford, who became a regular host of the Chesterfield Supper Club in 1945, returned to California permanently in November 1946.^[12] She then hosted the show from Hollywood with Weston and his orchestra.^[13][14] It was around this time that Paul Weston had a new idea for recorded music that would be similar to the soundtrack of a movie. It could be an enhancement to living but subtle enough not to stifle conversation. His album Music For Dreaming was the beginning of the "Mood Music" genre.^[5][6] In 1950, he left Capitol for a similar position at Columbia Records;^[15] Jo Stafford also signed with Columbia at the same time.^{[1][5][6][11]} He remained active in radio, with his own The Paul Weston Show and also in acting roles on Dear John with Irene Rich, Valiant Lady, and Cavalcade of America.^[5][16] Paul and Jo Stafford were married on February 26, 1952; the couple had two children, Tim (born 1952),^[17] and Amy (born 1956).^[18][19][20] Both returned to Capitol in 1961, leaving the company for Dot Records in late 1965.^[11][21]

Jonathan and Darlene Edwards[link]

1957 was a very busy year for Weston. He became the musical director for NBC-TV, a position he held for five years,^[2][3] a founding member and the first president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences,^{[1][6][22][23][24]} and half of a recording duo that the whole country was talking about. Paul and Jo did a skit at their parties where he would play the role of a simply horrible lounge pianist and she would vocalize in off-key melodies to the tunes he tried to play.^[25] Weston went public with his portion of the act at a Columbia Records convention, where it was an instant hit; the couple agreed to do some recordings, calling themselves Jonathan and Darlene Edwards.^[11][26][27] George Avakian, a Columbia Records executive, chose the name of Jonathan Edwards for Weston's act because of the Calvinist preacher. Weston was concerned that he might not be able to fill an album with the performances of Jonathan Edwards, so he asked Stafford to help.^[25] She became Darlene Edwards, the off-key singer.^[3][28] It was not immediately known to the public who had really made the records; there was much speculation as to what two famous people might be behind the music, before a 1957 Time article revealed their true identities.^[25][27] In 1958, the fictional couple appeared on Jack Benny's Shower of Stars, and in 1960, on The Garry Moore Show.^[29][30][31] The couple won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album of 1960 for their work as the imaginary pair.^[32][33] They continued to release Jonathan and Darlene albums for several years, and in 1979 released a cover of The Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" backed with "I Am Woman."^[26] As Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, the couple released a "sing along" album which Mitch Miller believed put an end to his television show and sing-along records.^[3] Their last release, Darlene Remembers Duke, Jonathan Plays Fats, was issued in 1982.^[34][35][36]

Grammys[link]

The original idea of honoring those in the recording industry came from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1957. Their plan was to propose bronze sidewalk markers to be placed on Hollywood Boulevard (the beginning of the current Hollywood Walk of Fame).^[37] The Chamber approached local top recording company executives with the idea, asking for help with a list of those who deserved the honor. Paul Weston was one of the men named to this committee by the Chamber. The committee executives decided all those who had sold a million records or a quarter million record albums during their careers would be candidates for the bronze star markers. As they continued their research, the men on the committee realized that many very important people in the recording industry would not qualify for this type of recognition. This realization prompted the founding of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, whose purpose was to create an award for recording artists. It became known as the Grammy, and the first awards were given in 1959.^[38] Paul's dedication to music and recording was recognized with a Trustees' Award Grammy in 1971.^[39]

Television and composing[link]

Weston had a long career as a musical director for television, including The Danny Kaye Show, The Jonathan Winters Show, and The Jim Nabors Show.^[6] He was also the conductor and arranger for his wife's CBS television show from 1954 to 1955, The Jo Stafford Show.^[40][41] Though he did not provide the names of the programs, Weston once said conductors on live television shows, "should also receive a stuntman's check!"^[23]

Weston arranged Ella Fitzgerald's album Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Irving Berlin Songbook (1957), devoted to the music of Irving Berlin.^[1] Among songs he composed are "I Should Care" and "Day by Day", both of which were collaborations with Sammy Cahn and Axel Stordahl and were big hits for Frank Sinatra.^[1] He co-wrote "Shrimp Boats", published in 1951, which was popularized by Jo Stafford.^[1]

One of Weston's songs made the tiny town of Hana on the island of Maui a household word. While on a visit to the area, Weston needed to shop for gifts for his two children. He found himself at the Hasegawa General Store, a business that has everything from A to Z packed into its four walls. Both surprised and charmed by the small general store, Weston wrote "The Hasegawa General Store" about his shopping experience there which was recorded by Arthur Godfrey, Jim Nabors, and others.^[42][43][44]

Weston also wrote classical and religious music: one of his two symphonic suites, Crescent City Suite, has enjoyed many performances, in the "Crescent City", New Orleans, and elsewhere. It was composed in 1956 and performed in New Orleans at the Municipal Auditorium in 1957 with Weston conducting. There was enough interest in the composition for a version for school bands to be made available in 1959; a symphonic version was also issued.^[45] He was the author of many hymns and two Masses which were published by the Gregorian Institute of America.^[46] Weston founded Corinthian Records in the late 1970s, a company which started as a religious music label, but which later became the distributor for the couple's secular albums.^[6] His intention was to get the masters of both his and Stafford's recordings for later reproduction on compact disk.^[3] He spent three years as the musical director of Disney on Parade.^[1]

Retirement and death[link]

The couple retired from performing in the 1970s. Active for many years in charities helping the developmentally disabled, the Westons gave more of their time to these groups after their retirement. The AbilityFirst work center in Woodland Hills, California is named in Paul Weston's memory.^[32][47][48] Weston died on September 20, 1996, in Santa Monica, California. In 2006, Jo Stafford donated her husband's library and her own to the University of Arizona. She died in 2008.^[26]

Sherwood comes from a musical family which includes his father Bobby Sherwood, who was an actor, musician, and big band leader, his mother Phyllis, a singer and drummer, and brother Michael, a keyboardist and singer. His godfather is the late Milton Berle. Billy has a wife, Michi.

Lodgic[link]

Billy Sherwood's music career started when he joined a band formed by Michael. Called Lodgic, Billy played bass and sung while Michael played keyboards and sang back up. Lodgic also included Guy Allison on keyboards, Jimmy Haun on guitar and Gary Starns on drums. They eventually moved the band to Los Angeles in 1980. After many years of trying to get things together, they recorded their debut album Nomadic Sands, released in 1985.

World Trade[link]

Lodgic eventually broke up, and Billy Sherwood put together a new band with Guy Allison. They recruited guitarist Bruce Gowdy and drummer Mark T. Williams to form World Trade. They recorded their self-titled debut in 1989, with Sherwood taking on the roles of engineer, mixer, and producer again, along with his band duties as bassist and lead singer.

Yes and other projects[link]

Then, Sherwood and Gowdy were asked to come and jam with Chris Squire, Alan White, and Tony Kaye of Yes. Singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Trevor Rabin had left the band and the idea was for Sherwood and Gowdy to replace them in the band. Rabin returned to the band, but demos were recorded by a line-up of Squire, White, Kaye, Rabin and Sherwood. However, Yes were to merge with Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe and Sherwood was relegated to the role of side musician, appearing on one track of the subsequent album Union. Like Trevor Horn before him, Sherwood was uncomfortable with the idea of replacing Anderson as the front man of Yes, but he struck up a friendship with Squire that would lead to work with him throughout the next 20 years.

During the hiatus of Yes, Squire put together the Chris Squire Experiment, having Sherwood as the lead singer while playing some guitar and keyboards. Sherwood then went on to record a project called The Key with guitarist Marty Walsh, though they would not release the album until 1997.

Behind the board, Sherwood worked with Motörhead, Dangerous Toys, and Paul Rodgers (formerly of Bad Company) as producer and engineer. Sherwood also guested on Toto's Kingdom of Desire album, singing and playing bass. He also produced a couple of tribute albums, including Jeffology, a tribute to Jeff Beck. Sherwood then joined Yes on tour as an additional musician, playing guitar and keyboards for their tour in support of Talk.

Sherwood got back together with his band mates from World Trade and released Euphoria in 1995, with Jay Schellen replacing Williams on drums. After this, he worked with a multitude of artists. Most of his work was as producer, mixer and engineer, including on more tribute albums: Dragon Attack, a tribute to Queen; Salute to AC/DC; and Crossfire, a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Sherwood would co-produce, engineer and mix the new studio tracks for Yes's Keys to Ascension and Keys to Ascension 2 albums. Sherwood started work on a third album by World Trade, but the band would fall apart. He would later use much of that material as his debut solo album The Big Peace,^{[citation needed]} released in 1999.

After the two Keys to Ascension albums, Rick Wakeman left Yes. Sherwood's friendship with Chris Squire would then lead him being asked to join the band again. The material that they had written together was used as the basis of what would become Open Your Eyes, released in 1997 by Yes. Sherwood played guitar and keyboards. Igor Khoroshev would join the band before the tour as the keyboardist leaving Sherwood to playing guitar and supplying backing vocals.

After returning from the tour, Sherwood and Yes returned to the studio to record The Ladder. During this time too, Sherwood and Squire started putting the finishing touches on their album Conspiracy, largely based on the Chris Squire Experiment material, which was released while Yes was on tour in support of The Ladder in 2000. Billy also took time to perform on his brother Michael's album Tangletown, released in 1999.

Yes recorded a show during The Ladder tour in Sherwood's hometown of Las Vegas at the House of Blues. This was released as an album and DVD titled House of Yes. Then after the tour, an announcement came that Sherwood was no longer a member of Yes.

Recent career[link]

After his departure from Yes, Sherwood worked with Chris Squire to release Conspiracy, including some work they composed together some years before. Following that, Sherwood composed his first solo album called The Big Peace in which he played most of all the instruments and also produced. The album was a sort of back to basis of his progressive roots.^{[citation needed]}

In 2003, Sherwood released another album with Chris Squire, the project becoming known as Conspiracy. The album was titled The Unknown.

More recently, Sherwood has been working on further tribute albums, notably Back Against the Wall and Return to the Dark Side of the Moon, tributes to Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Dark Side of the Moon respectively. The latter includes a new track recorded with Tony Kaye.

In 2007, a new band with Sherwood, Alan White, Tony Kaye and Jimmy Haun was announced, called Circa. With the release of their debut album Circa 2007 and a live DVD concert, Circa has played various live dates. White left the band and was replaced by Jay Schellen.

Sherwood is also credited for writing the theme song for the online anime series, Kung Fu Jimmy Chow.^[1]

In August 2008, Billy Sherwood's released his third solo album, At the Speed of Life, for which he received an award that year as the best Progressive Rock Producer.^{[citation needed]}

On January 14, 2009, Circa self-released on the Internet its second studio album, Circa HQ. This time, White was not available due to his commitments with Yes (who had begun a new tour). Sherwood's long time friend, collaborator and drummer, Jay Schellen, replaced White on the album. After a short international tour, Sherwood and co. started another project with former Toto singer, Bobby Kimball. Kimball, Sherwood, Tony Kaye and Jimmy Haun formed new band, Yoso, with a debut studio album in April 2009. Haun later abandoned the line-up (in order to focus on his work for adverts). He was replaced by Yes tribute band guitarist, Johnny Bruhns. Schellen chose to focus on his work in Asia Featuring John Payne and, after a number of other drummers, the band toured with Scott Connor on drums. Yoso then disbanded. Sherwood also released his fourth solo album, Oneirology.

In 2011, CIRCA: returned with a new line-up of Sherwood, Kaye, Bruhns and Connor, while Sherwood released his fifth solo album, What was the Question?.

Sherwood mainly plays Carvin guitars, 6- and 12-string; his main guitar, which he's played since Yes, is a red Carvin, Telecaster-shaped, with a Roland V-guitar pickup. His acoustic guitars are made by Babicz. He uses Line 6 amplifiers with 4x12" cabinets.^[2]
