Turks of Western Thrace - Batı Trakya Türkleri
Turks of Western Thrace (Turkish: Batı Trakya Türkleri) are ethnic Turks who live in Western Thrace. Their population is estimated around 150 000 - 200 000. The Greek government refers to the Turkish community as part of the Muslim minority, and does not recognise a separate Turkish minority in Western Thrace. Nevertheless, the fundamental rights of this community are enshrined in the Greek constitution and the Treaty of Lausanne. The Turks of Western Thrace struggle for the recognition of their Turkish identity. The European court of human rights convicted Greece, for not recognizing the Turks of Western Thrace as Turkish. Traditional Costumes of Thrace
The song is ΜΙΑ ΚΟΡΗ ΜΙΑ ΔΙΑΒΑΤΙΣΣΑ - 'Mia Kori mia diavatissa' - ('A Lass is Passing by'), taken from Guardians of Hellenism VOL 6 THRACE. The singer is famous Thracian Chronis Aidonidis (Χρόνης Αηδονίδης). The areas of Thrace (Θράκη) shown in the video are: Xanthi (Ξάνθη), Rhodope (Ροδόπη) and Evros (Έβρου), which are in Greece. Kavakli is in Northern Thrace, which is in present day Bulgaria, and Makra Gefyra is in Eastern Thrace, which is in present day Turkey. In Rhodopi, showcased are the Sarakatsani (Σαρακατσάνοι), the ancient shepherd tribe that has scattered all over Greece. More on the song: A Karsilamas from Western Thrace. The subject is common to many songs and is about the recognition of the woman by the husband. Translation: A lass, aman aman, a lass was passing by A lass was passing by, a blue-eyed one, When she goes in to weave, the trees and branches wither, A passer by went by, the lass he greeted. He greets her, she replies not, says not good day, My lass, aman aman, my lass why don't you marry, My lass why don't you marry and enjoy your youth, And take a lad like a star, like the moon. How can, aman aman, how can you tell me marry, How can you tell me marry, when I have a husband, A soldier, who has been gone, alas, these four years. In Evros, the municipalities covered are: Alexandroupoli (Αλεξανδρούπολη) , Didymoteicho (Διδυμότειχο), Metaxades (Μεταξάδες), Soufli (Σουφλί) and Vyssa (Βύσσα).

Xanthi the most beautiful city of Thrace - Greece
History Known references to Xanthi (Ξάνθη), or Xanthia (Ξάνθεια), date back to 879 BC. It began as a small village and experienced all the tumultuous periods of the history of Thrace, such as raids, disasters, race conflicts, civil wars. The population of the region of Xanthi had dwindled down to almost nothing and almost everything had been destroyed. This was the situation when the Ottomans arrived at the region. As a result, the Ottomans brought settlers from the depths of Asia Minor, which is how Genisea (Γενισέα) was created, while Oreo (Ωραίο) and Xanthi remained mainly Greek and Christian centres. [edit] Genisea Era By 1715, Xanthi, as well as Genisea, became renowned for its tobacco quality. Many foreign sightseers traveled throughout the region and described both the life and struggles of the locals. Tobacco commerce throughout Europe led Xanthi into a course of prosperity. In March and April 1829 two earthquakes literally leveled the city, however played a decisive role in the further developments. The city's re-building immediately got underway. In 1870, the city of Genisea was burned down and thus all of the agencies and services were transferred to Xanthi which, at that time, had a population of about 10000 inhabitants. In 1891, the railroad line was established near the city, while further economic development led to the founding of schools and associations. [edit] Balkans War The Bulgarians took the city of Xanthi in 1912, but after a period of eight months ...

The trailer of KIYMET
KIYMET is an autobiographic and self-reflexive film about the history of a family told from the perspectives of a grandmother and her granddaughter, exploring how tragedy and suffering can eventually be transformed into love, empowerment and hope for the younger generation.
My paternal grandmother Kıymet Özdemir is a very important person in my life. She has inspired me through her own life experience and the valuable conversations I have had with her on political activism, relationships and self-respect. This film is portraying how she emigrated from Turkey to Germany as the first person from my family, and how she made it through life despite all the difficulties she had to face: as a wife and mother, and on a political level as a socialist. The film also shows me with my grandmother discussing her experiences and her giving me support and advice. Starting with my trip to her village Vakıf in Thrace, the most western part of Turkey, the story continues in Berlin where we attend a traditional pre-wedding ceremony and the May Day demonstration together.
