"Hannah Arendt" Revisits Fiery Debate over German-American Theorist's Coverage of Eichmann Trial
http://www.democracynow.org - As head of the Gestapo office for Jewish affairs, Adolf Eichmann organized transport systems which resulted in the deportation of millions of Jews to extermination camps across Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. Eichmann helped draft the letter ordering the Final Solution -- the Nazi's plan to exterminate the Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Europe. After the war, Eichmann fled to Argentina, where he lived under a false identity until he was kidnapped by the Israeli intelligence agency, the Mossad, on May 11, 1960. He was flown to Israel and brought to trial in Jerusalem in April 1961. After being found guilty he was executed by hanging in 1962. One writer reporting on the trial was the German-Jewish philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt, the author of "The Origins of Totalitarianism" and "The Human Condition." Arendt's coverage of the trial for the New Yorker proved extremely controversial. She expressed shock that Eichmann was not a monster, or evil, but "terribly and terrifyingly normal." Even more controversial was her assertion that the Jews participated in their own destruction through the collaboration of the Nazi-appointed Judenrat, or Jewish Councils, with the Third Reich. Arendt's coverage of the Eichmann trial is chronicled in the 2013 film, "Hannah Arendt." We air clips of the film and speak with the film's star, Barbara Sukowa, who was awarded the Lola Award for Best Actress, the German equivalent of the Oscars, for her role. We are also joined by the film's director, Margarethe von Trotta, one of Germany's leading directors, who has won multiple awards over her 40-year career. Dice and his supporters sometimes refer to being "awake" or "enlightened" and see their knowledge of these topics as part of their own personal Resistance to the corrupt New World Order. This Resistance involves self-improvement, self-sufficiency, personal responsibility and spiritual growth. Mark Dice is the author of several books on current events, secret societies and conspiracies, including his newest book, Big Brother: The Orwellian Nightmare Come True which is available on Amazon.com, Kindle, Nook, Google Play and iBooks. While much of Mark's work confirms the existence and continued operation of the Illuminati today, he is also dedicated to debunking conspiracy theories and hoaxes and separating the facts from the fiction; hence the "Facts & Fiction" subtitle for several of his books. He has a bachelor's degree in communication from California State University. If you have an iPad or Android tablet, then you can get his books in the iBooks or Google Play store for only $6.99 or $7.99. Or you can get paperback copies from Amazon.com too if you prefer a physical book. They are not available in stores. Your support also funds more of Mark's videos and other operations. Is Machiavelli's "The Prince" Still Relevant? Modern Philosophy and Leadership - Analysis (1999)
The Prince (Italian: Il Principe, [il ˈprin.tʃi.pe]) is a political treatise by the Italian diplomat, historian and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. From correspondence a version appears to have been distributed in 1513, using a Latin title, De Principatibus (About Principalities). However, the printed version was not published until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. This was done with the permission of the Medici pope Clement VII, but "long before then, in fact since the first appearance of the Prince in manuscript, controversy had swirled about his writings".[1] Although it was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative. This is only partly because it was written in the Vernacular (Italian) rather than Latin, a practice which had become increasingly popular since the publication of Dante's Divine Comedy and other works of Renaissance literature.[2][3] The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics.[4][5] Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of his works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into wide usage as a pejorative term. It also helped make "Old Nick" an English term for the devil, and even contributed to the modern negative connotations of the words "politics" and "politician" in western countries.[6] In terms of subject matter it overlaps with the much longer Discourses on Livy, which was written a few years later. In its use of near contemporary Italians as examples of people who perpetrated criminal deeds for politics, another lesser-known work by Machiavelli which The Prince has been compared to is the Life of Castruccio Castracani. The descriptions within The Prince have the general theme of accepting that the aims of princes—such as glory and survival—can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends.[7] " He who neglects what is done for what ought to be done, sooner effects his ruin than his preservation. " —Machiavelli, "Chapter 15", The Prince Modern materialist philosophy developed in the 16th, 17th and 18th century, starting in the generations after Machiavelli. The importance of Machiavelli's realism was noted by many important figures in this endeavor, for example Bodin,[41] Francis Bacon,[42] Harrington, John Milton,[43] Spinoza,[44] Rousseau, Hume,[45] Edward Gibbon, and Adam Smith. Although he was not always mentioned by name as an inspiration, due to his controversy, he is also thought to have been an influence for other major philosophers, such as Montaigne,[46] Descartes,[47] Hobbes, Locke[48] and Montesquieu.[49] In literature:- Machiavelli is featured as a character in the prologue of Christopher Marlowe's The Jew of Malta. In William Shakespeare's tragedy, Othello, the antagonist Iago has been noted by some literary critics as being archetypal in adhering to Machiavelli's ideals by advancing himself through machination and duplicity with the consequence of causing the demise of both Othello and Desdemona.[50] Amongst later political leaders:- The republicanism in seventeenth century England which led to the English civil war, Glorious Revolution and subsequent development of the English Constitution was strongly influenced by Machiavelli's political thought.[51] Most of the founding fathers of the American Revolution are known or often proposed to have been strongly influenced by Machiavelli's political works, including Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and John Adams.[52][53][54][55] Under the guidance of Voltaire, Frederick the Great of Prussia criticised Machiavelli's conclusions in his "Anti-Machiavel", published in 1740. At different stages in his life, Napoleon I of France wrote extensive comments to The Prince. After his defeat at Waterloo, these comments were found in the emperor's coach and taken by Prussian military. Italian dictator Benito Mussolini wrote a discourse on The Prince. 20th century Italian-American mobsters were influenced by The Prince. John Gotti and Roy DeMeo would regularly quote The Prince and consider it to be the "Mafia Bible". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prince- published: 27 Jan 2014

Lecture on Contemporary Greek Politics and Greek Philosophy - Part 2
The lecture by Despoina Potari entitled "Contemporary Greek Politics and the Role of Greek Philosophy in Understanding the Economic Crisis", took place at the Athens Centre on Monday, October 21, at 7:00pm What is the Greek "crisis" all about, what are its deeper normative and institutional causes and how can classical Hellenic thought assist us in comprehending, but also possibly remedying, the current state of political affairs in our societies? This lecture presents an overview of the classical conception of politics, contrasting it with our current understanding of the nature, role and goals of 'the political', including an assessment of the ways in which the growing importance of economics in the formulation of political agendas -- both in Greece as well as in Western societies in general- has impacted upon our societies' commitment to the norms and values of justice, virtue and individual prosperity. Despoina A. Potari is a young Greek political theorist currently completing her Doctoral Degree in Political Theory at the University of Oxford. She has graduated with a Master's in Political Theory with Distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a BA in Economics, Politics and International Relations from Warwick University, UK. She is teaching Political Theory and Philosophy at Oxford University and Ancient Greek Political Philosophy and Ethics at the University of Patras. She is particularly interested in the importance and relevance of Hellenic philosophy in contemporary everyday life and the education of individuals and citizens, as well as the interrelations between political philosophy and the philosophy of sciences.
