Saffron Walden Rural District
Saffron Walden Rural District was a rural district in the county of Essex, England. It was created in 1894 and later enlarged by the addition of the parishes of Berden, Birchanger, Elsenham, Farnham, Henham-on-the-Hill, Manuden, Stansted Mountfitchet and Ugley from the disbanded Stansted Rural District. It was named after and administered from Saffron Walden.
Since 1 April 1974 it has formed part of the District of Uttlesford.
At the time of its dissolution it consisted of the following 31 civil parishes.

Rural district
Rural districts were a type of local government area – now superseded – established at the end of the 19th century in England, Wales, and Ireland for the administration of predominantly rural areas at a level lower than that of the administrative counties.
England and Wales
In England and Wales they were created in 1894 (by the Local Government Act 1894) along with urban districts. They replaced the earlier system of sanitary districts (themselves based on poor law unions, but not replacing them).
Rural districts had elected rural district councils (RDCs), which inherited the functions of the earlier sanitary districts, but also had wider authority over matters such as local planning, council housing, and playgrounds and cemeteries. Matters such as education and roads were the responsibility of county councils.
Until 1930 the rural district councillors were also poor law guardians for the unions of which they formed part. Each parish was represented by one or more councillors.

Saffron Walden
Coordinates: 52°01′34″N 0°14′42″E / 52.0262°N 0.2449°E / 52.0262; 0.2449Saffron Walden is a market town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is 12 miles (19 km) north of Bishop's Stortford, 18 miles (29 km) south of Cambridge and 43 miles (69 km) north of London. The town retains a rural appearance and has buildings dating from the medieval period onwards. In 2001 the parish had a population of over 14,313, increasing to 15,504 at the 2011 census.
History
Archeological evidence suggests a continuous settlement on or near the site of Saffron Walden from at least the Neolithic period. It is believed that a small Romano-British settlement and fort – possibly in the area around Abbey Lane – existed as an outpost of the much larger settlement of Cestreforda to the north.
After the Norman invasion of 1066, a stone church was built. Walden Castle dates from around 1140. It may have been built on a pre-existing fortification. A priory, Walden Abbey, was founded under the patronage of Geoffrey de Mandeville, first Earl of Essex around 1136 on the site of what is now Audley End village. The abbey was separated from the town of Walden by Holywell Field. After the dissolution of the monasteries, Sir Thomas Audley converted the abbey cloisters into a dwelling. Later this would become the site of Audley End House.

Saffron Walden is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 1977 by Alan Haselhurst, a Conservative.
Boundaries
New constituency boundaries which took effect at the 2010 general election removed the area around Halstead in Braintree district and replaced it with the northern wards of the Borough of Chelmsford.

Asplund has been preaching—and practicing—the mantra of innovation, and encouraging the administrators and teachers who work in the district to take their own risks, and try new things. While encouraging the district to honor its rural heritage, he’s pushed his team of educators and the community at large to adapt to the dramatically shifting economic realities and to expose students to the skills and opportunities they’ll need to find their footing in an economy vastly different from when their parents graduated from high school.
“If things are good for kids, we should be doing it,” Asplund says. “You try to say ‘yes’ to as many things as you can because, even though we’re going to screw a lot of things up, we’re gonna learn from that mistake and we’re going to make it better the next time. Doing the same thing over and over again isn’t going to get you anywhere.”

Great British Market Towns- Saffron Walden 4K
Saffron Walden is a delightful medieval market town located in north-west Essex. Many wonderful independent shops and cafes nestle amongst a wealth of beautiful historic buildings. Archaeological evidence suggests continuous settlement on or near the site of Saffron Walden from at least the Neolithic period. If you're thinking of visiting or moving to Saffron walden you'll find many interesting historic buildings reflecting its wealth as a rural market town.
At the heart lies St Mary’s Church, the largest parish church in Essex. Fine examples of elaborate moulded plasterwork (pargetting), can be seen on the Old Sun Inn and the houses in Castle Street & Bridge Street. Also of note are the Eight Bells, the timber-framed Cross Keys, and the medieval building located at 1 Myddylton Place.
Saffron Walden Museum's collections are housed in one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in the country, completed in 1835. It includes mammoth tusks and mummies, an early Tudor bed and a natural history museum gallery. In the grounds of the museum are the ruins of the Castle Keep which dates back to the 1130s.
Bridge End Garden is on the north side of Saffron Walden. Careful restoration has replicated gardening techniques and designs typical of the Victorian era and brought the garden back to its full splendour. The wonderful hedge maze is of particular appeal to children. The path into the garden passes the Fry Art Gallery which houses a collection of works by a Great Bardfield group of artists who settled in the Essex countryside in the 1930s.
The attractive Common is the oldest of Saffron Walden’s open spaces and on its eastern side is the largest turf labyrinth still surviving in Europe. Children of all ages enjoy following the ‘path’ through the turf, which winds for about one mile within a circle 100 feet (30.5 meters) in diameter.

Saffron Walden is a town in the county of Essex, in the east of England. It is situated about 12 miles north of the city of Bishop's Stortford and about 15 miles south of Cambridge. The town has a population of around 16,000 people.
Saffron Walden has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement in the area dating back to the Bronze Age. The town grew in importance during the Middle Ages, when it became a center for the wool trade. Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, Saffron Walden became famous for the cultivation and trade of saffron, a spice derived from the crocus flower.

When Superintendent John Asplund arrived to lead the Farmington school district in a struggling region of the Illinois farm belt, he brought a massive change with him: The word “yes.”
Yes to new paint. Yes to new classes. Yes to a smarter budget. Yes to a new parking lot. And yes to a giant solar panel project. Do you have an idea? Pitch it. At the very least, ask.
Asplund has been preaching—and practicing—the mantra of innovation, and encouraging the administrators and teachers who work in the district to take their own risks, and try new things. While encouraging the district to honor its rural heritage, he’s pushed his team of educators and the community at large to adapt to the dramatically shifting economic realities and to expose students to the skills and opportunities they’ll need to find their footing in an economy vastly different from when their parents graduated from high school.
“If things are good for kids, we should be doing it,” Asplund says. “You try to say ‘yes’ to as many things as you can because, even though we’re going to screw a lot of things up, we’re gonna learn from that mistake and we’re going to make it better the next time. Doing the same thing over and over again isn’t going to get you anywhere.”

Saffron Walden Rural District
Saffron Walden Rural District was a rural district in the county of Essex, England. It was created in 1894 and later enlarged by the addition of the parishes of Berden, Birchanger, Elsenham, Farnham, Henham-on-the-Hill, Manuden, Stansted Mountfitchet and Ugley from the disbanded Stansted Rural District. It was named after and administered from Saffron Walden.
Since 1 April 1974 it has formed part of the District of Uttlesford.
At the time of its dissolution it consisted of the following 31 civil parishes.

Saffron Walden is a picturesque, medieval town, in north-west Essex, 15 miles south of Cambridge.
If you're thinking of visiting or moving to Saffron walden you'll find many interesting historic buildings reflecting its wealth as a rural market town.
At the heart lies St Mary’s Church, the largest parish church in Essex. Fine examples of elaborate moulded plasterwork (pargetting), can be seen on the Old Sun Inn and the houses in Castle Street & Bridge Street. Also of note are the Eight Bells, the timber-framed Cross Keys, and the medieval building located at 1 Myddylton Place.
Saffron Walden Museum's collections are housed in one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in the country, completed in 1835. It includes mammoth tusks and mummies, an early Tudor bed and a natural history museum gallery. In the grounds of the museum are the ruins of the Castle Keep which dates back to the 1130s.
Bridge End Garden is on the north side of Saffron Walden. Careful restoration has replicated gardening techniques and designs typical of the Victorian era and brought the garden back to its full splendour. The wonderful hedge maze is of particular appeal to children. The path into the garden passes the Fry Art Gallery which houses a collection of works by a Great Bardfield group of artists who settled in the Essex countryside in the 1930s.
The attractive Common is the oldest of Saffron Walden’s open spaces and on its eastern side is the largest turf labyrinth still surviving in Europe. Children of all ages enjoy following the ‘path’ through the turf, which winds for about one mile within a circle 100 feet (30.5 meters) in diameter.

Saffron Walden is a delightful medieval market town located in north-west Essex. Many wonderful independent shops and cafes nestle amongst a wealth of beautiful historic buildings. Archaeological evidence suggests continuous settlement on or near the site of Saffron Walden from at least the Neolithic period. It is believed that a small Romano-British settlement and fort – possibly in the area round Abbey Lane – existed as an outpost of the much larger settlement of Cestreforda to the north.

Saffron Walden is a town in the county of Essex, in the east of England. It is situated about 12 miles north of the city of Bishop's Stortford and about 15 miles south of Cambridge. The town has a population of around 16,000 people.
Saffron Walden has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement in the area dating back to the Bronze Age. The town grew in importance during the Middle Ages, when it became a center for the wool trade. Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, Saffron Walden became famous for the cultivation and trade of saffron, a spice derived from the crocus flower.
