Me Against the World is the third studio album by American hip hop artist Tupac Shakur. It was released March 14, 1995 on the Interscope Records label. The album was composed of un-used tracks from the Thug Life era, and from other studio sessions from 1993 to 1994. It was his impending prison sentence, troubles with the police and Shakur being poor, which many believe might have contributed to Shakur's artistic re-emergence on record, as his material is believed by Steve Huey of Allmusic to have become markedly more "confessional", "reflective", and "soul-baring".^[1]

Me Against the World, released while Shakur was imprisoned, made an immediate impact on the charts, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. This ultimately made Shakur the first artist to have an album debut at number one on Billboard 200 while serving time in prison. The album served as one of Shakur's most positively reviewed albums, with many calling it the magnum opus of his career, and is considered one of the greatest and most influential hip hop albums of all-time. It is also his fourth biggest selling album with 2,439,000 units moved to date.^[2] Me Against the World won best rap album at the 1996 Soul Train Music Awards.^[3]

Background[link]

In 1993, Tupac Shakur was already a success in the hip hop industry, with two gold-certified singles that reached the top twenty on the pop charts ("I Get Around", "Keep Ya Head Up"), and a platinum-selling sophomore album that would peak just inside the top twenty-five of the Billboard 200 (Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.).^[4][5] However, the 22 year old artist had a series of incidents and charges of breaking the law. In the summer of 1993, Shakur was charged for assaulting director Allen Hughes while filming Menace II Society; Shakur was later sentenced to fifteen days in jail. Later, in October 1993, Shakur was charged with shooting two off-duty police officers in Atlanta, though the charges would eventually be dismissed. In November, Shakur and two members of his entourage were charged with sexually assaulting a female fan, for which they were found guilty and sentenced to 4.5 years in jail.^[6] According to Shakur, the album was made to show the hip hop audience his respect for the art form. Lyrically, Shakur intentionally tried to make the album more personal and reflective than his previous efforts.^[7]

Recording and production[link]

The musical production on the album was considered by several music critics to be the best on any of Shakur's albums up to that point in his career. Steve "Flash" Juon at RapReviews gave the production on the album a perfect 10 of 10 rating, particularly praising tracks like "So Many Tears" and "Temptations".^[8] Jon Pareles of the New York Times remarked that the production had a "fatalistic calm, in a commercial mold". He compared the album's production and synthesized hooks to that of Dr. Dre's G-funk style, stating that "while 2Pac doesn't sing, other voices do, providing smooth melody".^[9] James Bernard at Entertainment Weekly was not quite as enthusiastic about the album's production, remarking that Shakur's "vocals are buried deep in the mix. That's a shame—if they were more in-your-face, the lackluster beats might be less noticeable." ^[10] The album's recording sessions took place at ten different studios, while it was mastered at Bernie Grundman Mastering.^[11] Although the album was originally released on Interscope. Amaru Entertainment, the label owned by Shakur's mother Afeni Shakur, has since released the album twice.^[12][13]

It was like a blues record. It was down-home. It was all my fears, all the things I just couldn't sleep about. Everybody thought I was living so well and doing so good that I wanted to explain it. Some of the album's main themes concern the loss of innocence, paranoia, and occasional self-loathing.^[1] Much attention is paid to subjects such as the pain of urban survival.^[8] Not all of the music deals with such extremely bleak subject matter, however. Some tracks, such as "Old School", lean more to the nostalgic, though somewhat bittersweet side in Shakur's remembrance of his youth and the early days of hip hop music.^[1][8] The album is also well known for the more sensitive tracks "Dear Mama" and "Can U Get Away", which are both directed towards and reveal Shakur's devotion to the women he loves. On "Dear Mama", Shakur pays tribute to and expresses his undying affection for his own mother, continuously reminding her that though his actions might sometimes seem to state otherwise, "you are appreciated".^[8][14] On the track "Can U Get Away", Shakur attempts to impress a woman who has managed to gain his affections, away from the woman's abusive relationship. Four of the most eerie and revered tracks on the album are "If I Die 2Nite", "Lord Knows" "Outlaw" which directly references the shooting that Tupac went through before it happened, and "Fuck The World" Throughout the entirety of the album Shakur employs various poetical deliveries, ranging from alliteration ("If I Die 2Nite"), to the use of paired couplets ("Lord Knows").^[8]

Singles[link]

"Dear Mama" was released as the album's first single in February 1995, along with the track "Old School" as the B-side.^[15] "Dear Mama" would be the album's most successful single, topping the Hot Rap Singles chart, and peaking at the ninth spot on the Billboard Hot 100.^[16] The single was certified platinum in July 1995,^[4] and later placed at number 51 on the year-end charts.

The second single, "So Many Tears", was released in June, four months after the first single.^[17] The single would reach the number six spot on the Hot Rap Singles chart, and the 44th on the Billboard Hot 100.^[16]

"Temptations", released in August, was the third and final single from the album.^[18] The single would be the least successful of the three released, but still did fairly well on the charts, reaching number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100, 35 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks, and 13 on the Hot Rap Singles charts.^[16]

The album debuted at the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart with 240,000 copies sold in the first week, and became certified double platinum by the end of the year.^[26][27] Likewise, it also debuted at number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, thus giving 2Pac the first number one album on both R&B and Pop charts.^[28] While Shakur was in prison, the album over-took Bruce Springsteen's Greatest Hits as the best-selling album in the United States, a feat which he took pride in.^[7] Shakur became the first artist to have a number one album while serving a prison sentence.

The album received a five-star rating from Allmusic, with reviewer Steve Huey calling it "[Shakur's] most thematically consistent, least self-contradicting work", and stating "it may not be his definitive album, but it just might be his best".^[1] However, Steve "Flash" Juon of RapReview seemed to feel differently, remarking that the album "is not only the quintessential Shakur album, but one of the most important rap albums released in the 1990's as a whole". Juon awarded the work a perfect ten-out-of-ten rating.^[8] Cheo H. Coker at Rolling Stone also called the album Shakur's best, giving it three-and-a-half out of five stars.^[22]

Robert Christgau spoke out against the album, saying "the subtext of his persecution complex is his self-regard".^[19] Of the overall effect of the album, Coker said it was "by and large a work of pain, anger and burning desperation — [it] is the first time 2Pac has taken the conflicting forces tugging at his psyche head-on".^[22] Jon Pareles of The New York Times gave the album a favorable review, calling Shakur the "St. Augustine of gangster rap" due to his ambivalence towards the behavior and nature of the gangster lifestyle.^[9]

Accolades[link]

At the 38th Grammy Awards, in 1996, Me Against the World was nominated for Best Rap Album and the single "Dear Mama" was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance.^[29][30] In 2008, the National Association of Recording Merchandisers, in conjunction with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognized Me Against the World as one of the "most influential and popular albums", ranking it number 170 on a list of 200 other albums by artists of various musical genres.^[31]

Against the World is the fourth studio album by deathcore band Winds of Plague. It was released on April 19, 2011 through Century Media Records. Against the World features guest appearances from members of Hatebreed, Terror, For Today, Stray From the Path and former world heavyweight wrestling champion and sports entertainer Ultimate Warrior (who performs a spoken-word track entitled "The Warrior Code"). The album is described in a press release as "the heaviest-hitting record of the band's already heralded career." "Refined in the Fire" and "California" have been released as singles, and music videos have been released for "Drop the Match", "California" and "Refined in the Fire". This breaks the band's cycle of having no more than one video released per album. An unreleased song, a cover of the The Cranberries song "Zombie", was released with the iTunes EP for "California". It charted at number 60 on the Billboard 200, their highest charting album.

The flag of the World Health Organization combines a modern world map (azimuthal equidistant projection) with the Rod of Asclepius, in origin a symbol of the axis mundi^[1]

World is a common name for the whole of human civilization, specifically human experience, history, or the human condition in general, worldwide, i.e. anywhere on Earth.^[2]

In a philosophical context it may refer to: (1) the whole of the physical Universe, or (2) an ontological world (see world disclosure). In a theological context, world usually refers to the material or the profane sphere, as opposed to the celestial, spiritual, transcendent or sacred. The "end of the world" refers to scenarios of the final end of human history, often in religious contexts.

World history is commonly understood as spanning the major geopolitical developments of about five millennia, from the first civilizations to the present.

World population is the sum of all human populations at any time; similarly, world economy is the sum of the economies of all societies (all countries), especially in the context of globalization. Terms like world championship, gross world product, world flags etc. also imply the sum or combination of all current-day sovereign states.

In terms such as world religion, world language, and world war, world suggests international or intercontinental scope without necessarily implying participation of the entire world.

In terms such as world map and world climate, world is used in the sense detached from human culture or civilization, referring to the planet Earth physically.

Etymology and usage[link]

The English word world comes from the Old English weorold (-uld), weorld, worold (-uld, -eld), a compound of wer "man" and eld "age," which thus means roughly "Age of Man."^[3] The Old English is a reflex of the Common Germanic *wira-alđiz, also reflected in Old Saxon werold, Old High German weralt, Old Frisian warld and Old Norse verǫld (whence the Icelandic veröld).^[4]

The corresponding word in Latin is mundus, literally "clean, elegant", itself a loan translation of Greek cosmos "orderly arrangement." While the Germanic word thus reflects a mythological notion of a "domain of Man" (compare Midgard), presumably as opposed to the divine sphere on the one hand and the chthonic sphere of the underworld on the other, the Greco-Latin term expresses a notion of creation as an act of establishing order out of chaos.

'World' distinguishes the entire planet or population from any particular country or region: world affairs pertain not just to one place but to the whole world, and world history is a field of history that examines events from a global (rather than a national or a regional) perspective. Earth, on the other hand, refers to the planet as a physical entity, and distinguishes it from other planets and physical objects.

'World' can also be used attributively, to mean 'global', 'relating to the whole world', forming usages such as world community or world canonical texts.^[5]

By extension, a 'world' may refer to any planet or heavenly body, especially when it is thought of as inhabited, especially in the context of science fiction or futurology.

'World', in original sense, when qualified, can also refer to a particular domain of human experience.

Philosophy[link]

The Garden of Earthly Delights triptych by Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1503) shows the "garden" of mundane pleasures flanked by Paradise and Hell. The exterior panel shows the world before the appearance of humanity, depicted as a disc enclosed in a sphere.

In philosophy, the term world has several possible meanings. In some contexts, it refers to everything that makes up reality or the physical universe. In others, it can mean have a specific ontological sense (see world disclosure). While clarifying the concept of world has arguably always been among the basic tasks of Western philosophy, this theme appears to have been raised explicitly only at the start of the twentieth century^[6] and has been the subject of continuous debate. The question of what the world is has by no means been settled.

Parmenides

The traditional interpretation of Parmenides' work is that he argued that the every-day perception of reality of the physical world (as described in doxa) is mistaken, and that the reality of the world is 'One Being' (as described in aletheia): an unchanging, ungenerated, indestructible whole.

Plato

In his Allegory of the Cave, Plato distingues between forms and ideas and imagines two distinct worlds : the sensible world and the intelligible world.

Hegel

In Hegel's philosophy of history, the expression Weltgeschichte ist Weltgericht (World History is a tribunal that judges the World) is used to assert the view that History is what judges men, their actions and their opinions. Science is born from the desire to transform the World in relation to Man; its final end is technical application.

Schopenhauer

The World as Will and Representation is the central work of Arthur Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer saw the human will as our one window to the world behind the representation; the Kantian thing-in-itself. He believed, therefore, that we could gain knowledge about the thing-in-itself, something Kant said was impossible, since the rest of the relationship between representation and thing-in-itself could be understood by analogy to the relationship between human will and human body.

Wittgenstein

Two definitions that were both put forward in the 1920s, however, suggest the range of available opinion. "The world is everything that is the case," wrote Ludwig Wittgenstein in his influential Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, first published in 1922. This definition would serve as the basis of logical positivism, with its assumption that there is exactly one world, consisting of the totality of facts, regardless of the interpretations that individual people may make of them.

Heidegger

Martin Heidegger, meanwhile, argued that "the surrounding world is different for each of us, and notwithstanding that we move about in a common world".^[7] The world, for Heidegger, was that into which we are always already "thrown" and with which we, as beings-in-the-world, must come to terms. His conception of "world disclosure" was most notably elaborated in his 1927 work Being and Time.

Freud

In response, Freud proposed that we do not move about in a common world, but a common thought process. He believed that all the actions of a person are motivated by one thing: lust. This led to numerous theories about reactionary consciousness.

Other

Some philosophers, often inspired by David Lewis, argue that metaphysical concepts such as possibility, probability and necessity are best analyzed by comparing the world to a range of possible worlds; a view commonly known as modal realism.

Tynisha Keli Soares (born July 28, 1985), known by her stage name Tynisha Keli, is an American R&B and pop singer-songwriter, who has seen her greatest success in Japan.

She is best known for the single "I Wish You Loved Me" which was written by Rico Love and produced by Tha Corna Boyz. The singer's debut album, The Chronicles of Tk, was released in Japan on April 22, 2009. The Chronicles of TK peaked at #12 on the Japanese album charts,^[1] and sold 600,000 copies in Japan. The album's second single Shatter'd, reached #4 on Billboard's Japan Hot 100 Charts.^[2] Her second album The 5th Element was released August 17, 2010 in Japan, it debuted at number one on Japan's iTunes, the first single released off the album "Love Hurts" also debuted at number one.

Early life[link]

Tynisha was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the daughter of Timothy Soares and Elisa Soares. She is of Portuguese descent. Keli came from a poverty stricken home and struggled financially for most of her life. She has two brothers, Timothy Soares and Tazmyn Soares, and one sister, Tay'le Rudolph.^[3] Her father was killed when she was barely a year old.^[4] She had big responsibilities as a kid. At age of 8 years old, she accepted music into her life in such a major way because it was her only outlet, her way of letting out the frustrations she had.^[5] She started singing professionally around the age of 14. She then moved to Los Angeles, where she lived for seven years, before moving to Atlanta. Her younger brother, Tazmyn Soares was killed in Boston in 2007.

[edit] 2002: Gyrlz Society and record deal

Gyrlz Society was an American girl group comprising four members: Amy Correa, Melissa Tessmer, Tynisha Keli (formerly Tynisha Soares), and Katy Scanlan. The group released one single, the group's only song "Respect Me", along with a Double "D" Mix, which was produced by Damon Jones in 2002 under MCA Records. Although the single's casing mentioned a self-titled Gyrlz Society album to be released "later this year" (2003), the album was cancelled and the group quickly disbanded.^[4] From the beginning she knew it wasn't for her. As time went on she wanted to branch out and try it on her own.

[edit] 2003–09: Debut album The Chronicles of TK

Signed to Warner Bros. Records, Keli worked with Kara DioGuardi, who is one of the industry’s most sought-after songwriters and producers. She released the production company and started working with different producers such as Bryan-Michael Cox, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Tha Cornaboyz, Robin Thicke and many more. She recorded her album from 2006 to 2008 which is released in early 2009. The album only released in Japan and debuted at number 12 at Japan Oricon Albums Chart. The first single "I Wish You Loved Me" was released on 2007 and the video was released one year later in 2008. The single debuted in Japan at number 25 in 2009. The second single "Shatter'd released a few months later is her first Top 10 song which peaked at number 5 in Japan.

In 2009, she covered the song "The Boy Is Mine" (originally sung by Brandy and Monica) with singer Beni Arashiro. She also had a minor role in the 2009 musical remake film 'Fame', where she sung in the cafeteria to "This is My Life". Keli has also made a cameo in the 2009 film Fame, inspired by the TV sitcom she loved the programme as a child.

She co-wrote the song "Powerless", which was featured on the debut album Exposed by R&B-Singer and Def Jam signed Kristinia DeBarge.

In Late 2009 Tynisha announced via her Twitter account ^[6] she would be leaving her record label Warner Bros. Although no reason was provided as to why. Although Warner Brothers won't be involved in future projects, Tynisha's projects will still be distributed in Japan, by Warner Japan.^[7]

[edit] 2010–2011: The 5th Element

In January 2010 Tynisha announced via Ustream^[8] to her fans she was working on her second album "The 5th Element"^[9] and all vocal orders would be managed by Pierre Medor. She also stated this album would see a European Release only and then she would work on her USA Debut both released through Eight72 Entertainment. It has been confirmed via Twitter from Tynisha that her second album The 5th Element is complete.

According to Tynisha during a Ustream broadcast, the first single from her second album will be a song titled "Next Time". The single was expected to be released, June 9, in Europe, but had been pushed back to June 16. "The 5th Element" was expected to be released July 28 of 2010, but has been pushed back to August 25, 2010. It debuted at number thirty-six on the Japanese album charts in the first week.^[10]

On June 16, 2010 during a live interview with Large FM, Tynisha herself, along with her manager Tyrrell Bing of Tha CornaBoyz premiered her new single, Tha CornaBoyz penned & produced ballad "The Right Way".

It turns out that there will be two official first singles released from her second album, with "Next Time" being the official European single while "The Right Way" will be the official U.S. single.^[11] A video for the record "Love Hurts" featuring Coma Chi was shot in Yokohama, Japan and will be released the first week of August.^[6]

Tynisha will be featured on a song called "They Say" by Hitz Committee/Que Records/EMI Records rapper Huey. The song will be not featured on his upcoming album Redemption to be released on September 14, 2010 maybe as a B-Side or Bonus Track.^[12]

Tynisha's Japanese single "Love Hurts" with Coma Chi (Komachi), debuted at number one on her Birthday July 28, 2010 becoming her first #1 single.^[13] The 2nd US single "The Right Way" was released to iTunes on July 27, 2010.^[14] "The Right Way" was released in Japan as well, and ranked number one on Japan's Western Rekochoku ringtone charts, making it Tynisha's second number one single.

Tynisha has signed an endorsement deal with eye-wear designer K.Michael, and has become one of the faces of the 2010 "Forever K. Michael" Designer Eye-ware Campaign, along with artist like Nappy Roots, Cupid, Donnie Klang, and dance crew Fanny Pak.^[15][16] She is expected to go on a multi-city promotional tour with the campaign in the fall.

Tynisha confirmed on her ustream that she would soon be working on a mixtape containing both covers and original songs. She has decided to call the mixtape 'The United States of TK'. However, the project was never completed and released.

Lauren Keyana "Keke" Palmer (born August 26, 1993) is an American actress and singer who rose to fame for her performance in the 2006 film Akeelah and the Bee.^[1] She also starred as the title character in the Nickelodeon sitcom True Jackson, VP. Palmer earned $20,000 per episode of True Jackson VP, which made her the fourth highest paid child star on television.^[2]

Early life[link]

Palmer was born in Harvey, Illinois.^[1] Her father, Larry, works for a polyurethane company, and her mother, Sharon, is a high school teacher who works with children with mental disabilities.^[3][4]

In 2002, Palmer auditioned for a stage production of The Lion King at age nine.^[3]

[edit] 2005–2007: Akeelah and the Bee, singing career and So Uncool

Palmer then pursued a career in singing. In 2003, she participated in American Juniors, the American Idol spin-off series, but her audition scenes were edited out and the show was canceled that year. In 2005, Palmer signed a record deal with Atlantic Records. Her debut single, "All My Girlz", is featured in the Akeelah and the Bee soundtrack. On November 18, 2006, she performed at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California for VH1's Save the Music Battle of the High School Marching Bands competition, marking her first ever stadium performance in front of thousands of people. In addition, as part of her contract with Disney, Palmer sang the songs "It's My Turn Now" and "Jumpin'" featured in the Disney Channel Original Movie Jump In!, in which she stars as Mary, the love interest to Corbin Bleu's character. In 2006, Palmer was featured in the music video for the Ludacris and Mary J. Blige song "Runaway Love", in which she starred as a pregnant 11-year-old girl. That same year, she recorded a song entitled "Tonight" which was featured as the first song in the end credits of Night at the Museum.

Palmer then began dating Everybody Hates Chris star Tyler James Williams in 2007. That same year, Her debut album So Uncool was released on September 18, 2007, on Atlantic Records, with the single "Keep It Movin'" preceding the album release. The album failed commercially and Palmer parted ways with Atlantic the next year.

In 2008, Palmer began her starring role as the title character in Nickelodeon sitcom True Jackson, VP. Palmer also wrote and performed the theme song for the series. That same year, she ended her year and a half relationship with Tyler James Williams.

In 2010, Palmer was signed by the Chairman of Interscope Records Jimmy Iovine and began working on an album.^[5] Between her MySpace and SayNow accounts she has released several snippets of songs that were recorded for possible inclusion on her sophomore album. In a 2011 interview, Palmer stated the album is complete and is in the process of finalization. The self titled album will be a mixture of R&B/Hip-Hop with pop undertones. Producers and writers for the album include, Oak, Lil Eddie, Lucas Secon, and others. Palmer stated that the album itself will be released in early 2012.

As of late 2010, Palmer, along with many other widely known celebrities, has been an avid representative for the "Saving Our Daughters" oath project, an anti-bullying campaign that allows people all over the world to take an oath to stop bullying.^[6]

In 2011, Palmer released a statement on her official website saying that she will be going on a US tour to promote her new music. She asked fans to vote for the states they wanted her to visit first. On September the winning states were announced. They were Texas, Florida, Minnesota, Georgia, Mississippi, Washington D.C., New York, and North Carolina, which is expected to start in 2012. That same year, she finished her show True Jackson, VP.

She starred alongside Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in the film Joyful Noise, released in January 2012. She will produce and star in Rags, a Nickelodeon musical film, as well as voice characters in Ice Age: Continental Drift and Winx Club.^[7] Palmer has also recently been cast in the upcoming comedy Virgin Mary, opposite Abigail Breslin and Carter Jenkins.^[8]

In July 2009, designer Jane Siskin created a Walmart fashion line inspired by True Jackson, VP, with all the designs being approved by Palmer. The fashion line consists of jumpers, modern dresses, knit tops, T-shirts, leggings, and more.^[9]
