A leaked US government document sets out a legal justification for President Barack Obama's policy of extrajudicial killing, as the United Nations prepares its own investigation into drone strikes. Obama's policy of using lethal force against suspected terrorists is coming under further scrutiny after a Justice Department white paper was obtained by the US media. The document moves the goalposts in regards to when the government is authorised to carry out the killing of a US citizen. This comes as, last week, the UN announced a major investigation into drone strikes. Led by the UN's special rapporteur on counterterrorism and human rights, the study will examine the extent of civilian casualties, and the wider consequences of an expanding global drone war.

EU officials went on strike on Tuesday to protest against potential cuts in their salaries and pensions. The protest came only two days before European leaders are due to meet in Brussels to agree on the next 7-year EU budget. 'We are here because at the end of the week, the Council will decide the budget for the European Union and we are afraid that some cuts will really put in danger the capacity of the European Union to stand for the principle, for the citizens and for its policies', chairman of the Center Staff Committee Cristian Sebastiani said. 'Europe will not exist with a very strong, competent and independant public service', DG Enterprise & Industry Principal administrator Antonio Lacerda said. 'Our first concern today is not our salaries, it's the future of the European Union. We are here for more than our salaries. We are here to serve a project, to serve a dream and we want this dream to be kept alive', chairman of the Center Staff Committee Cristian Sebastiani said. The controversy began after British Prime Minister David Cameron said that EU salaries should be slashed to reflect current national austerity measures. Germany and the Netherlands also defend the idea. EU officials, however, believe that they are being made the scapegoat of Europe. The administrative budget represents 6% of the total budget. 'Cameron has political views on the EU. The budget is only an excuse. He wants to have a free market, not a political union, so he is doing his best in ...

DemocracyNow.org. - Italy's High Court has upheld the sentences of 23 CIA operatives convicted of kidnapping a Muslim cleric under the US program of "extraordinary rendition." The cleric, Abu Omar, was seized from the streets of Milan in 2003 and taken to US bases in Italy and Germany before being sent to Egypt, where he was tortured during a four-year imprisonment. The Americans were all convicted in absentia after the United States refused to hand them over. The ruling marks the final appeal in the first trial anywhere in the world involving the CIA's practice of rendering terror suspects to countries that allow torture. But back in 2008, then presidential candidate Barack Obama unequivocally denounced torture and extraordinary rendition. Well, according to our guest, four years after Obama made those comments impunity for torture has now become a bipartisan policy of the US government. For more, we speak with Alfred McCoy, a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of the new book, "Torture and Impunity: The US Doctrine of Coercive Interrogation." France launched its war on Mali on January 11, under the pretext of halting the advance of the fighters who control the northern part of the African country. The Mali intervention will end with the same results: destruction, loss of life and deep anger against the west. Interview with Nii Akuetteh.
