First-class cricket is a class of cricket that consists of matches of three or more days' scheduled duration, that are between two sides of eleven players and are officially adjudged first-class by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although, in practice, a team might only play one innings or none at all.

Test cricket, although the highest standard of cricket, is itself a form of first-class cricket, although the term "first-class" is commonly used to refer to domestic competition only. A player's first-class statistics include his performances in Test matches.

Generally, first-class matches are eleven players a side but there have been exceptions. Equally, although first-class matches must now be scheduled to have at least three days' duration, there have historically been exceptions.

Due to the time demands of first-class competition, the players are mostly paid professionals, though historically many players were designated amateur. First-class teams are usually representative of a geopolitical region such as an English county, an Australian state or a West Indian nation.

Definitions of first-class cricket[link]

MCC 1895[link]

Prior to 1947, the only definition of first-class cricket had been one in Great Britain that dated from a meeting at Lord's in May 1894 between the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) committee and the secretaries of the clubs involved in the official County Championship, which had begun in 1890. As a result, those clubs became first-class from 1895 along with MCC, Cambridge University, Oxford University, senior cricket touring teams and other teams designated as such by MCC.

ICC 1947[link]

The term "first-class cricket" was formally defined by the then Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in May 1947 as a match of three or more days duration between two sides of eleven players officially adjudged first-class; the governing body in each country to decide the status of teams. Significantly, it was stated that the definition does not have retrospective effect. MCC was authorised to determine the status of matches played in Great Britain.

For all intents and purposes, the 1947 ICC definition confirmed the 1895 MCC definition and gave it international recognition and usage.

Hence, official judgment of status is the responsibility of the governing body in each country that is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The governing body grants first-class status to international teams and to domestic teams that are representative of the country's highest playing standard. It is possible for international teams from associate members of the ICC to achieve first-class status but it is dependent on the status of their opponents in a given match.

According to the ICC definition, a match is first-class if:

• it is of three or more days scheduled duration
• each side playing the match has eleven players
• each side may have two innings
• the match is played on natural, and not artificial, turf
• the match is played on an international standard ground
• the match conforms to the Laws of Cricket, except for only minor amendments
• the sport’s governing body in the appropriate nation, or the ICC itself, recognises the match as first-class.

A Test match is a first-class match played between two ICC full member countries subject to their current status at the ICC and the application of ICC conditions when the match is played.

A peculiarity of the two-innings match is the follow-on rule. If the team that batted second is substantially behind on first innings total, it may be required to bat again (i.e., to immediately follow on from its first innings) in the third innings of the match. In first-class cricket, the follow-on minimum lead requirement depends on match duration. In a Test or other match with five or more days duration, the team batting second can be asked to follow on if 200 or more runs behind. If the match duration is three or four days, the minimum lead is 150 runs.

Matches played before the MCC and ICC definitions[link]

The absence of any ruling about matches played before 1947 (or before 1895 in Great Britain) has caused problems for cricket historians and especially statisticians who have been forced to compile their own matchlists. Inevitable differences have arisen and there are variations in published first-class statistics.

Hammad Azam (born March 16, 1991 in Attock) is a Pakistani cricketer.

International career[link]

An all-rounder, Azam made his first-class debut in 2008 for Rawalpindi. He had played just six first-class games before being selected in the Pakistan squad for the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

His performance in the tournament was impressive, scoring 173 runs in six matches and getting dismissed only once. His unbeaten 92 against West Indies in the semi-final guided Pakistan to the final of the tournament.^[1] He was immediately selected in the Pakistan squad for the Twenty20 International against Australia.^[2]

One Day Internationals[link]

On 23 April 2011, Azam along with Mohammad Salman and Junaid Khan made their one day international debuts against West Indies in St. Lucia. On 25 April 2011, Azam took his first wicket in the second Digicel ODI against West Indies in St.Lucia.

Sanjay Bapusaheb Bangar  pronunciation (help·info) (born 11 October 1972, Beed, Maharashtra) is a retired Indian cricketer. He was an all-rounder and had represented India in Tests and One Day Internationals.

Bangar began his career playing in the youth teams of Maharashtra and Bombay, but at state level he made his name representing Railways who he has played for since the 1993–94 season. He often opens both the bowling and batting for Railways due to his lively medium pace bowling and sound defensive batting technique.^{[citation needed]}

In the 2000–01 season, Railways reached the final of the Ranji Trophy where they lost to Baroda. The following season, they went one better and defeated Baroda to win the competition. Bangar's performances had caught the eyes of the selectors and he was called up to the Indian squad for their matches against England in the 2001–02 season [2].

In only his second Test, he scored 100 not out against Zimbabwe at Nagpur batting at number 7. In the 2002 tour of England, he was promoted to open the innings at Headingley after some poor performances by Wasim Jaffer. He responded with his most important innings for India and made a patient 68 on the first day in an invaluable partnership with Rahul Dravid in difficult swinging and seaming conditions. Later on in the same match he also chipped in with two important wickets to set up a rare innings victory for India away from home.

Bangar was named as part of India's squad for the 2003 Cricket World Cup, but his performances for India began to tail off. He has not played international cricket since January 2004 as the selectors decided to concentrate on younger talents.^{[citation needed]}

He later became the captain of Railways and led them to another Ranji Trophy victory in 2004–05. He represented Deccan Chargers in the IPL first season. He played for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2009 IPL. Currently he is the batting coach for Kochi Tuskers Kerala.
