Mispillion Harbor - Shorebirds Feast on Crab Eggs
During two weeks in May, shorebirds land on a Delaware Bay all-you-can-eat beach. Here's a look at an amazing sight that few people ever get to see in person. Red Knots and other migratory shorebirds feast on a bounty of horseshoe crab eggs, as many as one million per square meter of beach. Unfortunately, this beach won't be enough to save shorebird populations that are in trouble. These birds need our help as well. You can start by sharing this video and liking Celebrate Delaware Bay on Facebook (facebook.com/CelebrateDelawareBay).

Shorebird Migration
The Upper Bay of Panama is the first site in Central America to join the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN), a partnership of organisations working to protect shorebirds and their habitats through a network of key sites across the Americas. Because of its importance to migratory birds, BirdLife identified the bay as an Important Bird Area (IBA) in 2003. It is also on the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance. Every year, the Upper Bay of Panama is visited by as many as 2 million shorebirds travelling between North and South America via the Isthmus of Panama. Counts of shorebirds along the Panama coast at times exceed 10000 per kilometer. The site is used by more than 30 percent of the world female population of Western Sandpiper Calidris mauri, and is globally important for at least six other shorebird species. Based on these high migratory bird counts, the area has been recognized as a WHSRN Site of Hemispheric Importance. Shorebirds are threatened by many factors, including habitat destruction, pollution and human disturbance. More than a quarter of all North America's shorebird species and subspecies are in serious decline, according to WHSRN. Some, such as the New World race of Red Knot (Calidris canutus), will become extinct within present lifetimes if current trends are not halted. To protect shorebirds and their habitats, WHSRN works with over 200 partner organizations across the Hemisphere. In Panama, the organising partners are ...

Delaware Bay Shorebird Project
It's a match made in nature, shorebirds and horseshoe crabs. Horseshoe crabs lay the eggs, Red Knots and other migratory shorebirds eat the excess eggs. Leaders of the Delaware Bay Shorebird Project team explain why the bird-crab relationship is in trouble, then tell you what to do to help them all survive. You can also help by sharing this video, and "like" Celebrate Delaware Bay on Facebook to keep up with the team's conservation efforts (www.facebook.com

Baby Tern Graduates to Shore Bird Box
August 14, 2009: This little tern, a Least Tern, is growing rapidly. When I arrived at IBRRC on Tuesday, August 11, he had already been transferred to a shore bird box in Holding 1, our main hospital room. He has graduated from his incubator in ICU. Look closely, and you will see that his feathers are growing out. When he is an adult, he will be 8 to 9 inches long, have a black "crown" on his head, a snowy whiter underside and forehead, grayish back and wings, orange legs, and a yellow bill with a black tip. In his new domicile, there is sand and gravel spread over the floor. There are dishes of meal worms, slivered smelt, and live minnows. A ceramic heat lamp, feather duster, and mirror are in the left hand corner, front. In the left corner, back, there is a full-spectrum light so he is not sitting in the dark during the day. According to US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Least Tern is an endangered species. Source: ecos.fws.gov From the Smithsonian: "This tiny tern once was considered the perfect size to adorn ladies' hats during the late 1800s. Least terns were collected by the thousands from the Atlantic coast for this decorative purpose, only to frighteningly diminish their numbers..." Natalie Ai Kamauu @ The Shorebird
One of Hawaii's best kept secrets, Natalie Ai Kamau'u, proves she is no stranger to Hawaiian music, again. Natalie started turning heads when she was just a teenager, singing alongside her father for Halau Hula Olana. In 1990, Natalie garnered the coveted title Miss Aloha Hula under her parents, Kumu Hula Howard and Olana Ais teaching and guidance. Natalie recorded a solo cassette release in the 1990's. She continued to experiment with different venues; even different genre.Natalie along with her husband Iolani became part of a group called "Sunland" along with Chad Guerrero and Claudia Vazquez. It was kind of a mixture of Euro-techno and Hawaiian pop; put together by Henry & Peter Bergstrom - Swedish-born writer/producers. They would have several hits from the "Eruption" CD - "We Are Only Human" and "Juliet". With cultural and musical differences and questions about financing, Natalie and 'Iolani broke from the group to musically make their own way again. Hula was always a part of Natalie; but it wasn't long before Natalie began shining solo in the spotlight again. Many among the hula community and Hawaiian music fans proclaimed, "Finally!" when Natalie Ai Kamauu's solo release "'E," arrived. It would win her the title of 2006 Female Vocalist of the Year at the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. With the release of her second recording, `I, her fans find a different faceting of her love for music and hula with her signature sweet voice, strong spirit and playful heart. A true ...
