Cattle Egrets with Cattles
The Egrets mostly followed the cattle. This I observed during my holidays. In this video you can see two egrets following a calf where ever he went. I think they are near them to eat the insects coming out of the grass when the cattle eat it. I really enjoyed observing how they behaved and waited patiently around the calf. A few captures I missed and they were hilarious. They never left the cattle and seem to be attracted by a magnetic force !! You can also see that they get on well with each otrher. ====================== Cattle Egret - Bubulcus ibis ====================== The Cattle Egret is a cosmopolitan species of heron (family Ardeidae) found in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Bubulcus, although some authorities regard its two subspecies as full species, the Western Cattle Egret and the Eastern Cattle Egret.Originally native to parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. The bird is called a Cattle Egret because it is mostly seen with grazing cattle, stalking energetically alongside the animals , running around them and in between their legs, all for seizing insects that are disturbed by the movement of cattle. They spends most of its time in meadows or other open areas., Every day, the Cattle Egret flies to a cattle herd, and spends the day feeding on bugs, spiders and other small animals. A delicacy for the Egrets is locusts -- when locusts swarms appear in steppes and meadows, a lot of Cattle Egrets are sure to ...

Last Egret Joint Literacy Project
Good things happen when three Rotary Clubs decide to partner on a project! Early in this Rotary year, Patricia Reybold, Jill Lurhsen and Bill Pearl, Presidents of the Palm Beach Flagler, West Palm Beach and Palm Beach Rotary Clubs decided to conduct a joint literacy project with the Boys and Girls Clubs of West Palm Beach and the Historical Society of Palm Beach County with support from award winning children's author Harvey Oyer. III. Last year, Middle River Press released Oyer's latest book, The Last Egret, part of a series aimed at pre teens which chronicles the adventures of 8 year old Charlie Pierce, who comes to South Florida with his family in 1872 and explores the land, learns native culture, faces down hurricanes and who discovers the far-reaching impacts of plume hunting in the Everglades in the late 19th century. In this project, the three clubs jointly purchased 50 copies of the Last Egret, adorned their inside cover with the Rotary Logo and the Four Way Test, and set up a reading at the West Palm Beach Boys and Girls Club coupled with a field trip to the Historical Society to see a special exhibit, "Feather Wars: Surviving Fashion 1870-1920" about plume hunting, which nearly wiped out the entire bird population of South Florida to feed an explosive international market demand for millinery fashion in the last 19th and early 20th centuries. Three Rotarians from each club read selected passages in small groups of students, encouraging dialog and relating the ...

How to Identify the White Snowy Egret Preening in Wetlands of Circle B Bar Reserve While Birding
SpotOnServing.com See Also bit.ly Birdwatchers of Kissimme, Florida drive 50 miles to Circle B Bar Reserve for exceptional sunrise birding of Central Florida. The Snowy Egret is the most elegant of the egrets I have encountered, unless viewed while feeding. The Snowy Egret has bright yellow boots, which makes identification in-flight quite easy. If standing in water the black bill and black legs will nail the identification. The delicate and lacy aigrettes and the shorter upturned plume feathers were highly prized by the millinery feather hunters. Now protected, their populations have been rescued from sure extinction. Their rookeries are in trees or bushes in mangrove swamps or small willow ponds.
