Seed Production in Gymnosperm
The adult sporophyte (eg pine tree) develops male and female cones on separate branches. Female cone develops two ovules on the upper surface of each cone scale; each ovule contains haploid megaspore. Male cones produce microspore by meiosis. The microspores develop into pollen grains. Each winged pollen grain is a four-cell male gametophyte. The female gametophyte grows producing two or more archegonia, each of which contains an egg. During pollination, a wind-born pollen grain falls near the opening in one of the ovule of the female cone. Each male gametophyte form a pollen tube that penetrate the tissue of the female gametophyte. When the pollen tube has grown into an archegonium, a sperm cell from the male gametophyte fertilizes the egg. The zygote develops into an embryo and a mature seed is produced. The female cone opens releasing the seeds. When condition is favourable the seed germinates to a new young sporophyte - a pinetree seedling.

concerns about conifers (pine, fir, spruce, cedars, etc.)
www.permies.com Just to be clear I do NOT advocate elimination of conifers. I advocate diversity. I advocate replacing conifer monocultures with a diversity of trees that include conifers. Discussion of this video is at www.permies.com There are four parts to this video. The first part is where Brad Knight (Sage Mountain Homestead, Corvallis, Montana) and I are investigating the understory of a large pine. Nothing growing there. Conifers are allelopathic - they sorta poison the competition. The second part is with Ernie Wisner (www.ernieanderica.info) who conveys the days that he worked at measuring the biodiversity under douglas fir monocultures. The third part shows the mighty, the glorious, the amazing Sepp Holzer (http expressing his opinion on "conifer desert" referring to how conifers, when left unchecked, tend to take over a landscape and greatly reduce horticultural diversity which leads to a broad variety of problems. And finally, Rick Valley, horticulturalist and permaculture instructor at the Lost Valley Educational Center in Dexter, Oregon (www.lostvalley.org sums it all up especially well. He points out how a douglas fir tree easily outcompetes oak trees. And relates how the native people burned back the douglas fir trees so their food is given a better chance. Music by Jimmy Pardo

April Storm Buries Conifer & Evergreen Colorado
A quick video by Bob Maiocco Denver's Real Estate Guy showing the overpass of Richmond Hill Road over US Highway 285 during Conifer's biggest snow storm of 2009. Conifer, which is just West of Denver and South of Evergreen received over 30" of snow which caused highway closures and power outages across Conifer and Evergeen. The next day it was a perfect Bluebird day--not a cloud in the sky and temperatures rose into the fifties!

Conifer Removal From The Pensioner Hutch Garden
(More rubbish at www.youtube.com Join Toadmouse as he removes a conifer bush/tree from the garden of The Pensioner Hutch. He removes the 25 year old bush/tree breaking a spade (or was it a shovel? No, it was definitely a spade), criticizing a cheap saw and putting a fork into his foot as he does so. Bearing in mind that footage of a car dashboard at night and in the dark while the car was being started has so far attained 75 views, how many views will this piffle get? We have thrown in shots of some classic mugs, so there is surely something for everyone....

Edible Conifers And Toxic Impostors
Please support this channel by watching the advertisements, sharing the videos, and commenting on the videos. Thanks! Descriptive comments create tag words and also get our videos more views through human interaction. If you like my videos please leave descriptive comments. If you eat Yew, you will die! This video shows how to identify Yew at any time of year. Yew is in the Taxus genus, there are several varieties, but all are deadly poison. When it comes to foraging, being 100% certain that a plant or mushroom is edible is crucial. Knowing what parts to harvest, when to harvest and how to prepare wild edibles is equally important. There are many edible parts on conifers or evergreens. It is important to know which evergreens are deadly poison and which ones are safe to eat. Yew is deadly poison. Mistakenly thinking that all evergreens are edible can lead to death. Period! The words evergreen and conifer are not synonymous, it is important to know that as well. The word conifer describes a group of trees that are cone shaped, CONifer CONe! The word evergreen describes a wide range of plants, trees, and shrubs that stay green throughout their entire life cycle. Wintergreen is a tiny plant, it is an evergreen in the Heath family, Gaultheria procumbens is it's Latin name. Words are misleading, we use words to describe plants and mushrooms. Don't be mislead! Trees are plants, so are shrubs. Mushrooms are not plants. These are all important things to know if you want to safely ...
