Acqualagna
Acqualagna is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Pesaro e Urbino in the Italian region Marche, located about 70 km west of Ancona and about 40 km southwest of Pesaro. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 4,304 and an area of 50.8 km². It is one of the main centers in Italy for truffle.
Acqualagna borders the following municipalities: Cagli, Fermignano, Urbania, Urbino.
The current name derives from the Latin name Aqua Lanea, meaning "Water Slaughter", and which remembered the battle of Gualdo Tadino fought nearby between Totila's Ostrogoth and Narses's Byzantine armies during the Gothic Wars.
In the neighbourhood existed the Roman town of Pitinum Mergens, destroyed by Alarich I. The survivors founded the castle of Montefalcone, from which the current Acqualagna evolved.

Adriatic Sea
The Adriatic Sea ( /ˌeɪdriˈætɨk/) is a body of water separating the Apennine Peninsula from the Balkan peninsula and the Apennine Mountains from the Dinaric Alps and adjacent ranges. The Adriatic is the northernmost arm of the Mediterranean Sea, extending from the Strait of Otranto (where it connects to the Ionian Sea) to the northwest and the Po Valley. Its coasts are part of (in decreasing order of coastline length without islands) Croatia, Italy, Albania, Montenegro, Slovenia and Bosnia–Herzegovina. The Adriatic contains over 1300 islands, mostly located along its eastern coast. It is divided into three basins—the northern being the shallowest and the southern being the deepest, with a maximum depth of 1,233 metres (4,045 ft). The Otranto Sill, a decrease in depth, is located at the border between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The prevailing currents flow counterclockwise from the Strait of Otranto, along the eastern coast and back to the strait along the western (Italian) coast. Tidal movements in the Adriatic are slight, although larger amplitudes are known to occur occasionally. The Adriatic's salinity is lower than the Mediterranean's because the former collects a third of the fresh water flowing into the latter, acting as a dilution basin. The surface water temperatures generally range from 24 °C (75 °F) in summer to 12 °C (54 °F) in winter, significantly moderating the Adriatic Basin's climate.

Ajdovščina
Ajdovščina (Italian: Aidussina,German: Haidenschaft) is a small town and a municipality with the same name and a population of 7,000 (municipality 18,000), located in the Vipava Valley (Vipavska dolina), Slovenia.
The first mentions of Ajdovščina go as far as 2000 BC, but the town became better known around 200 BC as Mansio Fluvio Frigido, a small post in use by the Roman empire later in the AD 200, when it was also known as Castra or Castrum ad Fluvio Frigido, the remains of which are still visible.
Ajdovščina and its surroundings were an important commercial and strategic point because some major battles took place in the Vipava Valley, such as the Battle of the Frigidus in AD 394. A local legend mentions that Theodosius I used the strong northern bora wind that is common in Ajdovščina and the Vipava Valley to his favor and disabled the enemy archers and pilum units with the help of the wind.
The Hubelj River is the dividing line between the two largest parts of Ajdovščina, locally known as Šturje and Ajdovščina. During the pre-World War I years the river was also the border between Goriška and Carniola, two Slovenian regions.

Ankaran
Ankaran (Italian: Ancarano) is a settlement in the Municipality of Koper in the Littoral region of Slovenia. It is near the border between Slovenia and Italy.
The village, the most populated one in the Municipality of Koper, is located on the Gulf of Trieste, on the Adriatic coast. It is 5 km from the Italian town of Muggia, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and 6.5 km from Koper. The nearest Croatian town, Buje, is 33 km away.
The area of Ankaran was known in Roman times as Ancaria. The Benedictine monastery of Saint Nicholas, dating to the early 12th century, is one of Ankaran's main sights. In 1630, a devastating plague forced the monks to abandon the monastery. In 1774, the monastery and its estate were bought by the Madonizza family from Koper, who converted it into their summer residence. During the Napoleonic Wars, the building was used as a military hospital. After the First World War, it was converted into a hotel, part of the Saint Nicholas seaside resort, opened in 1925.
In 1999 the Slovenian Seafarers Barracks in Ankaran became the home base of the Slovenian Navy.

Apače
Apače (German: Abstall) is small town and a municipality in Slovenia. It lies in the traditional region of Styria in northeastern Slovenia and belongs to the Mura statistical region. The municipality borders on the municipalities of Šentilj, Sveta Ana, and Gornja Radgona. The Mura River represents the border between Slovenia and Austria. It is located 25 kilometers northeast of Maribor and 20 kilometers west of Murska Sobota.

Aquileia

Aquileia (Friulian: Acuilee/Aquilee/Aquilea, Venetian: Aquiłeja/Aquiłegia, Slovene: Oglej) is an ancient Roman city in Italy, at the head of the Adriatic at the edge of the lagoons, about 10 km from the sea, on the river Natiso (modern Natissa), the course of which has changed somewhat since Roman times. Today, the city is small (about 3,500 inhabitants), but it was large and prominent in Antiquity, and is one of the main archeological sites of Northern Italy.
Aquileia was founded as a colony by the Romans in 180/181 BC along the Natissa River, on land south of the Julian Alps but about 8 miles north of the lagoons. Presumably named from an indigenous word Akylis, the colony served as a frontier fortress at the north-east corner of transpadane Italy and was intended to protect the Veneti, faithful Roman allies, during the Illyrian Wars and act as a buttress to check the advance of other warlike people, such as the hostile Carni and Histri tribes. In fact, Aquileia was founded on a site not far from where Gaulish invaders had attempted to settle in 183 BC.

Beltinci
Beltinci (Prekmurje dialect: Böltinci, Hungarian: Belatinc or Belatincz, German: Fellsdorf) is a settlement and a municipality in the Prekmurje region of northeastern Slovenia. The municipality has 8,256 inhabitants. It was a sanjak under the name Balatin that initially belonged to the Budin Eyalet, and later the Kanije Eyaleti, during Ottoman rule before the Treaty of Karlowitz.
Until 1937, there was a Jewish Orthodox synagogue in Beltinci. It was built in 1860 and served the local Jewish community.
The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Ladislaus and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Murska Sobota. It dates from 1742 with late 19th-century alterations.

Benedikt, Slovenia
Benedikt is a settlement in the Municipality of Benedikt in northeastern Slovenia. Before 1998, it was part of the Municipality of Lenart. It lies in the Slovene Hills (Slovene: Slovenske gorice). The area was part of the traditional region of Slovenian Styria. It is now included in the Drava statistical region.
The name of the settlement was changed from Sveti Benedikt v Slovenskih Goricah (literally, 'Saint Benedict in the Slovene Hills') to Benedikt v Slovenskih Goricah (Benedikt v Slovenskih goricah; literally, 'Benedict in the Slovene Hills') in 1952. The name was changed on the basis of the 1948 Law on Names of Settlements and Designations of Squares, Streets, and Buildings as part of efforts by Slovenia's postwar communist government to remove religious elements from toponyms. In 2003, it was changed simply to Benedikt.
The local parish church from which the village and municipality get their name is dedicated to Saint Benedict and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maribor. It is originally a Gothic church dating to the second quarter of the 14th century. It was extensively rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Bistrica ob Sotli
Bistrica ob Sotli is a settlement and municipality in eastern Slovenia. It has been an independent municipality since 1999. The settlement itself lies on a river terrace above the right bank of the river Sotla. The area traditionally belonged to the region of Lower Styria. It is now included in the Savinjska statistical region.
The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Peter and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Celje. The parish is known as Sveti Peter pod Svetimi gorami which was also the name of the settlement before 1952. The site of the church has evidence of prehistoric and Roman occupation. The actual church building is a Pre-Romanesque building to which a sanctuary was added in the 15th century and Gothic frescos remain from this period. Later two Baroque chapels and a belfry were added. Most of the internal church furnishings date to the 19th century.

Bled
Bled (German: Veldes) is a town and a municipality in northwestern Slovenia in the region of Upper Carniola. The area, within the Julian Alps, is a popular tourist destination.
A settlement area since Mesolithic times, Bled was first mentioned as Ueldes (Veldes) within the March of Carniola on April 10, 1004, when it was awarded by Emperor Henry II to Bishop Albuin I of Brixen. Bled Castle was first mentioned in a 22 May 1011 deed in which Henry II donated it to Albuin's successor, Bishop Adalberon of Brixen. With Carniola, Bled was ceded to Rudolph of Habsburg after he defeated King Ottokar II of Bohemia at the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278. From 1364 until 1919, Bled (Veldes) was part of the Duchy of Carniola, except for a stint between 1809 and 1816 as one of the Napoleonic Illyrian Provinces
After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Bled came under the rule of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and became a summer domicile of the ruling House of Karađorđević, a tradition that President Josip Broz Tito continued, when he built his residence here in 1947. Bled became an independent municipality in 1996. In 2000, Bled became the home of IEDC-Bled School of Management.

Bloke (municipality)
Bloke is a municipality in Slovenia. It gets its name from the karst Bloke Plateau, over which the majority of its 45 settlements are scattered. Originally a municipality in its own right, it was incorporated into the Municipality of Cerknica in 1955 and in was included in the Municipality of Loška Dolina in 1995, when this split from Cerknica. It was re-established as an independent municipality in 1998.

Bohinj
Bohinj (German: Wochein) or Bohinj Basin (Slovene: Bohinjska kotlina) is a 20 km long and 5 km wide basin within the Julian Alps, in the Upper Carniola region of northwestern Slovenia. It is traversed by the Sava Bohinjka river. Its main feature is the periglacial Lake Bohinj (Slovene: Bohinjsko jezero). Bohinj is part of the eponymous municipality, the centre of which is located at Bohinjska Bistrica.
The basin consists of four regions; the Spodnja Dolina (Lower Valley), Zgornja Dolina (Upper Valley), Ukanška kotlina (Ukanc Basin), and Nomenjska kotlina (Nomenj Basin). It is bounded by Komarča on one end and Soteska, which is in fact a narrow canyon, at the other. The Lower Bohinj Mountain Range represents its southern border. The Sava river has carved a canyon between the Jelovica and Pokljuka plateaus in the east. To the north, Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain is also a part of the municipality.
Sava Bohinjka (which merges with Sava Dolinka into the Sava) begins when two rivers, the Jezernica and the Mostnica merge. The Mostnica comes from a valley called Voje, whereas the Jezrnica is a very short river that flows from Lake Bohinj. Many smaller streams flow into the lake. The largest of them, the Savica, emerges in Komarča as a large waterfall. The Savica Falls (Slap Savica) get most of the water from Črno Jezero (Black Lake) which is the largest in the Triglav Lakes Valley.

Braslovče
Braslovče is a settlement and municipality in northern Slovenia. Most of the municipality, with the exception of the northern part of the village of Letuš, lies on the right bank of the river Savinja. The area was part of the traditional region of Styria. It is now included in the Savinja statistical region.
Braslovče is first mentioned in written doucments dating to 1140 AD. In the second half of the 14th century Braslovče was granted market rights by the Counts of Cilli. The parish church, built on a slight hill to the north of the settlement, is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Celje. It is first mentioned in written documents from 1120. Most of the current building dates to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Brda, Slovenia
Brda (Italian: Collio) is a municipality in western Slovenia. It is located in the Slovenian Littoral region, extending from the Italian border to the river Soča. It is bound by Mount Sabotin (609 m) to the east and Korada (812 m) to the north.
The municipality comprises the Slovenian part of the Goriška Brda (known in Italian as Collio Goriziano) hills, which are one of the most important wine producing microregions in Slovenia. It enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate and it is protected from the strong Bora wind, which frequently blows in other parts of the Slovenian Littoral.
Agriculture is an important part of the local economy: besides grapes, cherries are the most important agricultural product in the municipality, followed by apricots, pears, figs and plums. Together with the Vipava Valley, Brda produces most of the Diospyros kaki in Slovenia. Smaller amounts of olive oil are also produced.
The wine varieties grown in Brda include merlot, cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, pinot gris, sauvignon vert.

Brezovica, Slovenia
Brezovica (German: Bresowitz bei Laibach) is a municipality in central Slovenia, just south of its capital Ljubljana. It has approximately 9,300 inhabitants. Its administrative centre is the settlement of Brezovica pri Ljubljani. It is the central municipality in the Ljubljana Marshes. The entire municipality is part of the traditional region of Inner Carniola and is now included in the Central Slovenia statistical region. To the east, it borders with the Municipalities of Ljubljana and Ig. To the south, it borders the municipality of Cerknica, to the west Borovnica and Vrhnika, and to the north the Municipality of Dobrova–Polhov Gradec.
Geographically it is rather diverse, containing thirty square kilometres of the Ljubljana Marshes, with its isolated "sunken" hills, a section of the Ljubljanica River, a siphonic karst lake; located just outside Jezero, and the Rakitna Plateau with a lake and sixty square kilometres of forest.
The area has been inhabited since ancient times. People known as the Lake Dwellers, described by the Slovene writer Janez Jalen in his novel Bobri (Beavers), arrived when the marshland was still covered by a lake. Later, the area covered by the present municipality was crossed by Roman roads, traces of which are still visible, near Rakitna for example. The Ljubljanica River was navigated by boatmen. The Romans redirected it towards Podpeč, a village known for its good quality stone. The nearby forests and the settlements proximity to Ljubljana, have positively influenced the development of agriculture, trade, and enterprise in the area. Many old crafts, such as lime, stone, and wood processing, and wickerwork have survived to the present day.

Brežice
Brežice (German: Rann) is a city and municipality in eastern Slovenia in the Lower Sava Valley, near the Croatian border. The area was traditionally divided between Lower Styria (territory on the left bank of the Sava River) and Lower Carniola (territory on the right bank of the Sava River). The whole municipality is now included in the Lower Sava Statistical Region.
Brežice is one of the largest municipalities in Slovenia. It lies at the confluence of the Sava and Krka rivers and also stands at the junction of a number of international traffic routes. Brežice prides itself on a rich historical and cultural heritage. The Lower Sava Valley Museum (Slovene: Posavski muzej Brežice), housed in Brežice Castle, contains archaeological and ethnological exhibits, exhibits on the Croatian and Slovenian peasant revolt, and a modern history collection. It is one of the largest regional museums in the country. A more recent landmark addition to the town is its water tower, as well as the double arches of the 527 m long iron bridge, which spans the Sava and Krka rivers.

Cankova
Cankova (Hungarian: Vashidegkút, German: Kaltenbrunn) is a town and a municipality in the Prekmurje region of Slovenia.
The area was originally a part of the Municipality of Murska Sobota. In 1995, the Municipality of Cankova–Tišina was formed, which existed until 1999, when Tišina became a separate municipality.
The parish church in Cankova is dedicated to Saint Joseph and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Murska Sobota. It was built in 1754 and renovated in 1900. It has a cruciform plan with a western belfry.

Castel Goffredo
Castel Goffredo is a comune in the province of Mantova, in Lombardy, Italy, lying 35 km (21.75 mi) from Mantua and a few more from Brescia. It lies in a region of springs at the foot of the slopes that contain Lake Garda, towards the plain of the Po. Castel Goffredo borders the following municipalities: Castiglione delle Stiviere, Medole, Ceresara, Casaloldo, Asola, Acquafredda, Carpenedolo.
Founded in a region inhabited from the Bronze Age, Castel Goffredo belonged to the count-bishops of Brescia from the ninth century to 1115, when the commune was established. When Brescia proved unable to come to the commune's defense, in 1337 it placed itself under the protection of Mantua and the Gonzaga. From 1348 to 1404 it was governed from Milan by the Visconti and returned to the Gonzaga in 1441.
Castel Goffredo became the seat of an autonymous feudo of marquis Aloysio Gonzaga in 1511. At his death, his fiefs of Castel Goffredo, Castiglione delle Stiviere and Solferino were divided among his three sons. The eldest, Alfonso, who gained Castel Goffredo, was assassinated in 1592 by members of the household of his nephew Rodolfo Gonzaga of Castiglione, brother of the saintly Aloysius Gonzaga; Alfonso, publicly tried for murder but acquitted, was murdered in turn, 31 January 1593, occasioning a popular uprising that reestablished the Magnifica Comunità. The territory was annexed in 1603 by the duchy of Milan following a bitter suit heard before the Emperor, and remainmed a part of Milanese territory until 1707.

Cerknica
Cerknica (Italian: Circonio, German: Zirknitz) is a town and municipality in the Karst region of southwestern Slovenia, with a population of 10,284 (2002 Census). It belongs to the traditional region of Inner Carniola.
Its best-known landmark is Lake Cerknica, an intermittent lake, the largest lake in Slovenia, to the south of the town of Cerknica. Various watersports including windsurfing are popular on the lake.

Cerkno
Cerkno (Italian: Circhina, German: Kirchheim) is a small town and a municipality in the Littoral region of Slovenia. It has around 2,000 inhabitants and is the administrative centre of the Cerkno Hills. The municipality has around 5,000 people.
Cerkno is a small but important local cultural center in the Goriška Region near Idrija. It is known for the Laufarija carnival, a spring festival with carved wooden masks; for the Franja Partisan Hospital (Partizanska bolnica Franja), a partisan hospital from World War II; and as a ski resort.
The parish church in the town is dedicated to Saint Anne and belongs to the Diocese of Koper. The church consist of a rectangular presbytery, a wide rectangular nave, and a belfry north of the front wall. The church dates from 1714 and is attributed to the architect Gregor Maček (1682–1745). A second church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.
Historically, the Cerkno Hills belonged to Tolmin County. In the 16th century, the area came under Habsburg rule, and was included in the County of Gorizia and Gradisca. After the end of World War I, the area was occupied by the Italian Army, and then officially annexed to Italy in 1920. Between 1920 and 1943, it was part of the administrative region known as the Julian March. After the Italian armistice in September 1943, Cerkno was liberated by the Yugoslav Partisans and became one of the most important centres of Partisan resistance in the Slovenian Littoral. In 1945, it came under Yugoslav military administration, and in 1947 it was officially annexed to the People's Republic of Slovenia within the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia.

Cerkvenjak is a settlement and a municipality in northeastern Slovenia. It lies in the Slovenske Gorice hills in the region known as Prlekija. Traditionally the area was part of Lower Styria. The municipality is now included in the Drava statistical region.

Croatia
Croatia (ⁱ/kroʊˈeɪʃə/ kroh-AY-shə; Croatian: Hrvatska pronounced [xř̩ʋaːtskaː]), officially the Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska listen (help·info)), is a unitary democratic parliamentary republic in Europe at the crossroads of Central Europe, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean. Its capital and largest city is Zagreb. The country is divided into 20 counties and the city of Zagreb. Croatia covers 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) and has diverse, mostly continental and Mediterranean climates. Croatia's Adriatic Sea coast contains more than a thousand islands. The country's population is 4.29 million, most of whom are Croats, with the most common religious denomination being Roman Catholicism.
In the early 7th century the Croats arrived in area of present-day Croatia. They organised the state into two dukedoms by the 9th century. Tomislav became the first king by 925 AD, elevating Croatia to the status of a kingdom. The Kingdom of Croatia retained its sovereignty for nearly two centuries, reaching its peak during the rule of Kings Peter Krešimir IV and Dmitar Zvonimir. Croatia entered a personal union with Hungary in 1102. In 1527, faced with Ottoman conquest the Croatian Parliament elected Ferdinand I of the House of Habsburg to the Croatian throne. In 1918, after World War I, Croatia was included in the short-lived State of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs that declared independence from Austria–Hungary and co-founded the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. A Croatian state briefly existed during World War II as a fascist puppet state. After the war, Croatia became a founding member and a federal constituent of the Second Yugoslavia, a socialist state. In June 1991, Croatia declared independence, which came into effect on 8 October of the same year. The Croatian War of Independence was fought successfully during the four years following the declaration.

Debeli Rtič
Debeli Rtič (Italian: Punta Grossa) is a cape in the northern Adriatic sea on the border between Slovenia and Italy. It is located north-west of the Slovenian town of Ankaran, and west of the Italian town of Muggia.
The name (both in Slovene and Italian) literally means 'fat little cape'.
The cape is a natural park, so it is forbidden to build anything within the park, which is also home to the only salt meadow on the shores of the Mediterranean sea.
Because of relatively shallow water around the cape and various natural obstacles in the sea it was impossible to build a port anywhere on the cape, so very few decided to live there, however the place was later used as fields to produce food, which remains up to this day.

Destrnik
Destrnik is a settlement and a municipality in northeastern Slovenia. It lies in the Slovenske Gorice hills, to the north of Ptuj. The area was part of the traditional region of Lower Styria. It is now included in the Drava statistical region.
The local parish church, built on the highest point in the settlement, dominates its landscape and appears in the municipal coat of arms. It is dedicated to Saint Urban and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maribor. It dates to the 16th century with 18th century adaptations. The feast day of Saint Urban, 25 May, has also been chosen as the official municipal feast.

Divača
Divača is a small town and municipality in the Littoral region of Slovenia, a few kilometres from the Italian border.

Dravograd
Dravograd (German: Unterdrauburg) is a small town and a municipality in northern Slovenia, close to the border with Austria. It corresponded with Oberdrauburg up the river at Carinthia's western border with the County of Tyrol. The name Dravograd was invented during the Slovene national revival in the 19th century. Previously, the local Slovene name of the town was Traberk, a corruption of the German name Drauburg, which even today is used by many locals instead of Dravograd. The 19th century was a period of national awakening of the Carinthian Slovenes, and also of the rise of competing nationalisms: Slovene and German.

Gornja Radgona
Gornja Radgona (German: Oberradkersburg Prekmurian: Gorenja Radgonja, Hungarian: Felsőregede) is one of the municipalities and a town in Slovenia. Once it was a defensive stronghold for today's regional centre and its twin city, Bad Radkersburg, on the other side of the river Mura in Austria. The towns were split in 1919 when the state of Styria was divided between Austria and Slovenia. After that they developed separately, and Gornja Radgona grew into a new town centre.
Traces of Neolithic settlement on Castle Hill attest to settlement during the Urnfield culture. Later finds indicate that there may have been a small Roman settlement here. The Parish of Gornja Radgona belonged to the Diocese of Salzburg and was founded under the Spanheims in the first half of the 12th century. The Parish Church in Gornja Radgona is dedicated to Saint Peter and was built in 1813 and extended in 1890.
The history of Gornja Radgona itself reaches back to the 12th century, when a settlement was established beneath Ratigoj Castle. King Albert I of Habsburg founded today’s Radkersburg on an island in the Mura River, and it was mentioned as a market in 1265 and as a town in 1299. Eventually the old settlement turned into a suburb of the town. Gornja Radgona was built on the slope of Castle Hill (265 m) and the tip of the Slovenske Gorice hills that separates the Apače Basin from the Mura Basin.

Gornji Petrovci
Gornji Petrovci (Hungarian: Péterhegy) is a town and a municipality in Slovenia. The municipality includes 14 villages, represented in the municipal coat of arms by fourteen simplified blue houses. The shield also includes a heraldic otter holding a golden fish. Gulf of Piran
The Gulf of Piran or Piran Bay (Slovene: Piranski zaliv, Croatian: Piranski zaljev or, recently, Savudrijska vala, Italian: Baia di Pirano) is located in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, and is a part of the Southernmost tip of the Gulf of Trieste. It was named after the town of Piran, and its shores are shared by Croatia and Slovenia. It is delimited by a line connecting Cape Savudrija (Savudrijski rt) in the south to the Cape Madona (Rt Madona) in the north and measures around 19 square kilometres (7.3 sq mi). Since the 1990s, the name Bay of Savudrija (Savudrijska vala) has also been used in Croatia.
On the eastern Slovenian coast lies the town of Piran, and the settlements Portorož and Lucija. On the southern Croatian coast are tourist camps of Crveni vrh and Kanegra, built in the 1980s. The main river flowing into the gulf is the Dragonja, whose mouth is on the border. Along the mouth of the Dragonja lie the Sečovlje saltpans, covering an area of 650 hectares (1,600 acres).

Gulf of Trieste
The Gulf of Trieste (Italian: Golfo di Trieste, Slovene: Tržaški zaliv, Croatian: Tršćanski zaljev, German: Golf von Triest) is a shallow bay of the Adriatic Sea, in the extreme northern part of the Mediterranean Sea. It is part of the Gulf of Venice and is shared by Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. It is closed to the south by the peninsula of Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, shared between Croatia and Slovenia.
The gulf is limited by an imaginary line connecting the Punta Tagliamento on the Italian and Savudrija (Punta Salvore) on the Croatian coast. Its area is approximately 550 km², its average depth 16 m, and its maximum depth 37 m. With the exception of flat islets blocking the entrance to Laguna di Grado, there are no islands in the gulf. Its eastern coasts, with Trieste and the Slovenian Littoral, have more rugged relief.
The sea current in the gulf flows counterclockwise. Its average speed is 0.8 knots. Tides in the gulf are among the largest in the Adriatic Sea, but nevertheless do not usually exceed 60 centimetres (24 in). The average salinity is 37-38‰, but in the summer it falls under 35‰.

Hrastnik
Hrastnik is a town and a municipality in central Slovenia. Traditionally the area was part of the Lower Styria region. The entire municipality is now included in the Central Sava statistical region. Located in the valley of a minor left bank tributary of the Sava River, the area is known for its rich deposits of coal. Coal mining began in the area in 1804. Ig, Slovenia
Ig is a settlement and a municipality in central Slovenia. The resort town of Kranjska Gora is 15 kilometres northwest of Jesenice, while the picturesque tourist destination Bled lies 10 kilometres to the southeast. Other nearby villages and towns include Mojstrana, Hrušica and Žirovnica. The hamlet of Planina pod Golico, 5 km north of Jesenice, is popular with tourists, especially in May when the wild daffodils are in flower. Jezersko, Slovenia
Jezersko (German: Seeland) is a municipality in northern Slovenia. Since 1995, Jezersko was part of Preddvor and became an independent municipality in 1998. Originally located in the historic region of Carinthia, it became part of the Upper Carniola statistical region in 2005.
Jezersko is located in the remote Kokra Valley in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, south of the Seebergsattel Pass and the border with the Austrian state of Carinthia.
The name of the area derives from a glacial lake near the settlement of Zgornje Jezersko that started to disappear after an earthquake in 1348. However, it was still described by Johann Weikhard von Valvasor in 1689 as a large lake. It gave the are its German name Seeland (literally "lake land", first recorded as Seelant in 1496), and its Slovene equivalent Jezersko, which came into use at the end of the 19th century. A document from 1391 mentions the church of "St. Oswald by the Lake" (Sv. Ožbolt pri Jezeru).
The remote village was part of the Duchy of Carinthia until 1919, administratively linked to Eisenkappel in the north; however, the residents did not consider themselves "true" Carinthians. It was therefore the only settlement already ceded by the Carinthian Landtag assembly to the newly established State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, before it was officially adjudicated together with the Meža Valley and Dravograd to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes by the 1919 Treaty of Saint-Germain.

The Franciscan monastery built in the town itself is a testament to its importance. The building is well preserved and has undergone extensive renovation in recent years. Zaprice Castle, which stands outside the town, was built in a later period.

Kanal ob Soči
Kanal ob Soči (Italian: Canale d'Isonzo, German: Kanalburg) is a town and municipality in Slovenia, established in 1995 by secession from Nova Gorica.
The town itself is an important crossing point over the Soča River. The first bridge was built by the Romans. The current bridge was built after World War I. Kobarid (Italian: Caporetto, Friulian: Cjaurêt, German: Karfreit) is a town and a municipality in the Upper Soča Valley, western Slovenia, near the Italian border.
Kobarid is known for the Battle of Caporetto, where the Italian retreat was documented by Ernest Hemingway in his novel A Farewell to Arms. Kobarid has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archeological remains from the Hallstatt period have been found in the area. In the 6th century, it was settled by Slavic tribes, ancestors of the modern Slovenes. During the Middle Ages, it was first part of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, and later of Tolmin County, before being included in the Habsburg Monarchy in the 15th century, like the majority of Slovene-speaking territories.

Komen
Komen is a settlement and a municipality in Slovenia. It is located on the Karst plateau in the Slovenian Littoral.
In the Middle Ages, it was first part of the Duchy of Friuli and in the 13th century it was included in the County of Gorizia. Komen was first mentioned in a document from 1247. In 1947, it became part of Yugoslavia and in 1991 of independent Slovenia.

Kostanjevica na Krki
Kostanjevica na Krki, also Kostanjevica ob Krki (German: Landstraß), is a small town and a municipality in the historic Lower Carniola region of southern Slovenia. It is today part of the Lower Sava statistical region. It is located in the northern foothills of the Gorjanci Hills near the border with Croatia, entirely on an island of the Krka River, and is also promoted as the "Venice of Lower Carniola" in Slovenian (Slovene: Dolenjske Benetke).

The town is protected as a cultural and historical monument. Kostanjevica is the oldest city of the region. In the early 13th century, the Carinthian duke Bernhard von Spanheim established the Fons Sanctae Mariae Cistercian Abbey on the southern frontier of the March of Carniola, which he claimed against the resistance of the Patriarchs of Aquileia and the Dukes of Merania.
The monastery, a filial of Viktring Abbey near Klagenfurt, was enlarged in a Baroque style in the early 18th century. It was nevertheless finally disbanded in 1785 by the Habsburg emperor Joseph II.

Kozje
Kozje is a small town and a municipality in eastern Slovenia. Kranjska Gora
Kranjska Gora (German: Kronau) is a town and a municipality on the Sava Dolinka River in the Upper Carniola region of northwest Slovenia, close to the Austrian and Italian borders.

Krško
Krško is a town and municipality in eastern Slovenia. The town lies on the Sava River. Litija
Litija (German: Littai) is a town and a municipality in central Slovenia. It is located in the valley of the river Sava, to the east of the capital Ljubljana. Ljutomer
Ljutomer (German: Luttenberg in der Steiermark) is a municipality in northeastern Slovenia, some 40 km east of Maribor. Traditionally it was part of the region of Styria. It is now included in the Pomurska statistical region.

Ljutomer lies at the heart of the Prlekija county. It is first mentioned as a settlement in written documents dating back to year 1242. In 1265 it was granted market right. It was devastated by the plague and numerous fires and it also had to defend itself against Ottoman and Hungarian raids. The first mass rally (tabor) in support of a United Slovenia took place in Ljutomer in 1868.Before 1918, the town had a substantial German speaking minority: in 1910, 46% of the inhabitants of the town were German speakers. The surroundings, on the other hand, were almost exclusively Slovene-speaking. Ljutomer was given town status in 1927.^{[citation needed]} The tradition of the Slovenian national awakening of the 19th century is continued by the town library, town museum and the art gallery.

Logatec
Logatec (German: Loitsch, Italianized: Longatico) is a town and a municipality in Slovenia. It is located roughly in the centre of Inner Carniola between capital Ljubljana and Postojna. Metlika
Metlika (German: Möttling) is a town and municipality in the southeastern Slovenia. It lies on the left bank of the Kolpa River on the border with Croatia. The municipality is at the heart of the area of White Carniola (Bela Krajina in Slovene), the southeastern part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola. Archaeological evidence has shown that the area has been settled since prehistoric times. From about 1205 it was incorporated into the Imperial March of Carniola and was granted town privileges in 1335. It was frequently attacked during Ottoman raids in the 15th and 16th centurues. In the 17th century it was afflicted by an earthquake and in 1705 the entire town burnt to the ground in a massive fire.
Metlika Castle is an originally 15th century castle located above the old part of the town. It was rebuilt in the early 18th century after the town fire and again after it was damaged for a second time by fire in 1790.

Mežica
Mežica (German: Mießdorf) is a town and a municipality in northern Slovenia. It lies on the Meža River in the traditional Slovenian province of Carinthia) near the Austrian border. The town developed close to a lead and zinc mine under Mount Peca. Mining began in 1665 and ended in 1994. Today the mine is only open for tourist visits.

Miren-Kostanjevica
Miren-Kostanjevica (Italianized: Merna Castagnevizza) is a municipality in western Slovenia, on the border with Italy. It is part of the Goriška region of the Slovene Littoral. The municipality's main settlements are Miren and Kostanjevica na Krasu. Miren is located in the lowest part of the Vipava Valley.
Historically, it was connected with the neighbouring village of Savogna d'Isonzo (Slovenian: Sovodnje ob Soči), which was left in Italy after the Paris Peace Treaty of February 1947. In the local self-government reform of 1994, the two centers united to form a single municipality. Mirna (municipality)
Mirna (German: Neydeck or Neudegg) is a nucleated village and a minor economic centre in central Lower Carniola, Slovenia. It is the largest settlement of the Mirna Valley and the centre of the Municipality of Mirna. It is situated at the crossing of regional roads and a confluence of several creeks with the Mirna River, along the railway linking Trebnje and Sevnica.
Mirna was first mentioned in 1180.
The village is situated at the crossroad of the regional roads R1-215, connecting Trebnje and Mokronog, and R2-417, connecting Mirna, Tihaboj, and Moravče, and at the confluence of the Lipoglavščica, Zabrščica, and Vejar creeks with the Mirna. It lies at the westernmost part of the Mirna–Mokronog basin in the Mirna Valley, mainly at raised terraces safe from flooding. To the southwest from Mirna stretches the Vejar Basin, connected with the Mirna–Mokronog basin by a narrow glen. It is included into the statistical region of Southeastern Slovenia.
The larger part of the older part of Mirna is situated on the left bank of the river, and a smaller part on the right bank. Both parts are connected with a stone bridge dating to the 18th century and a wooden footbridge next to it. The oldest part of the town with St. John's the Baptist church lies at the foot and the southwestern slope of the Trbinc Hill, whereas the younger part has grown at the ridge on the other side of the Mirna river, which turns 90° here. The lowest parts along the Mirna banks have been settled by industry, which employs people from the whole basin as well as the nearby hilly areas.

Mirna Peč

Mokronog-Trebelno
Mokronog–Trebelno is a municipality in Slovenia. The municipality was created in 2006 when it seceded from the Municipality of Trebnje. It is part of the traditional province of Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Southeast Slovenia statistical region.
Tombs dating to the Early Iron Age have been discovered on a number of sites in the municipality. The town of Mokronog was first mentioned in 1137, and acquired market rights in 1279. In around 1340, a wall was built around the town, of which only a tower now remains. The town suffered severely from Ottoman raids in the 16th and 17th century and it lost most of its population. It regained some of its former importance only in early 19th century when it became a center of leather industry. Municipality Naklo lies at an altitude of 407 m and has a total of 5020 residents. The scope of a municipality comprises 28.3 square kilometers. Nazarje
Nazarje is a town and a municipality in Slovenia. It lies around the confluence of the Savinja and Dreta rivers. Traditionally it belonged to the region of Styria and is now included in the Savinja statistical region.

Village Pesnica pri Mariboru is a new small town but Jarenina and Pernica are much older; Jarenina is also an old parish. There are a lot of castles and ecofarms, such are Kozar, Eder, Trunčič, Gaube, Sergo Dveripax and more. The main Maribor to Vienna railway line also runs through the settlement and contributed to its development. The modern motorway bypasses the settlement to the west.

Pivka
Pivka is a small town and a municipality in Slovenia in the Pivka Basin in the Kras region. It was first mentioned in 1300 as Sancti Petri super Piucha (St. Peter above Pivka). Until 1952 it was called Šentpeter na Krasu (St. Peter in the Karst). It belongs to the traditional region of Inner Carniola.
Although the Pivka region has been a strategically important location since ancient times, it became even more important with the construction of the Vienna-Trieste railway (the Austrian Southern Railway) in 1857 and the Št. Peter na Krasu-Rijeka railway twenty years later. In 1930, while it was under the Italian control, the strategic hills over the town were heavily fortified and included in the Alpine Wall system of defenses, which stretched from the Bay of Genoa to the Kvarner Gulf. Št. Peter na Krasu and the nearby barracks in Hrastje (now part of the town of Pivka) were one of the strongest points in the eastern section of the Alpine Wall.
On the basis of this rich military history from ancient times to the 20th century, the municipality of Pivka is working on a Park of Military History, which currently has a tank and artillery collection, but the project team has ambitious plans to develop the park into a tourism and experience center that will be a major tourist attraction in an area that already attracts many tourists to Postojna Cave and elsewhere. The first military re-enactment was staged in the Park in September 2007.

Podčetrtek is a settlement and a municipality in eastern Slovenia. It was first mentioned as a settlement in the early 11th century as Lonsperch and later as Lontsperch, Landsprech, Landsperg, Landsberg and eventually Windisch Landsberg. Its Slovene name is a reference to Thursday (Slovene: četrtek), which was the day when the market was traditionally held below the castle. The area traditionally belonged to the region of Styria. The castle was first mentioned in 1251. Most of the current structure dates to the early 17th century, when a two-story building with a central courtyard and two southern towers was built. It was adapted again in the late 18th century to the Baroque style, but retains its original features. After 1945 it was looted and fell into a state of disrepair, although the imposing building on a hill above the settlement is still an obvious landmark.

Polzela
Polzela is a settlement and municipality in Slovenia. It lies on the left bank of the Savinja River extending into the Ložnica Hills (Slovene: Ložniško gričevje) to the north. The area was part of the traditional region of Lower Styria. It is now included in the Savinja statistical region.

Portorož
Portorož (Italian Portorose), literally "Port of Roses", is a coastal town in Slovenia and one of the country's largest tourist areas.
The town and surrounding areas are served by Portorož International Airport which is located in nearby village of Sečovlje.
Portorož belongs to the coastal municipality of Piran, located in the southwest of the Gulf of Trieste (at the northern-most point of the Adriatic Sea) between the boundaries of Italy to the north and Croatia to the south. After the decline of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Portorož was incorporated into Italy, and after WWII into Yugoslavia and it's republic Slovenia. It is now an important tourist destination on Slovenian coast.

Postojna
Postojna (German: Adelsberg, Italianized: Postumia) is a town and a municipality in the traditional region of Inner Carniola, 35 kilometers (22 mi) from Trieste, in southwestern Slovenia. Population 14,581 (2002).
The area is known to have been populated since the paleolithic era due to the discovery of a cave settlement near the town of Postojna called Betal Rock Shelter (Betalov spodmol). The town lies on the Pivka River. Written sources first mention the settlement in the 13th century and in 1432 it became a borough. It was proclaimed a town in 1909. It was under Italian rule between 1918 and 1943 (nominally to 1947) and was a commune in province of Trieste as Postumia.
The entire municipality has a typical karst landscape. One of Slovenia's major tourist attractions, Postojna Cave, is located in the municipality. The cave was first described in the 17th century by Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, and a further major part of the cave was discovered in 1818. Electric lighting was added in 1872, increasing the cave system's popularity. A second popular tourist attraction, located approximately 9 km from Postojna, is Predjama Castle, a 16th-century castle built in the mouth of another karst cave.

Prevalje
Prevalje (German: Prävali) is a settlement and a municipality in northern Slovenia. It lies in the traditional Slovenian province of Carinthia. Immediately above the Old square (Slovene: Stari trg) the medieval Trebnik Mansion stands. The 850-years old dense town line is a sloping square, from Trebnik manor past the St. George parish church, along small stream in an open channel, down to the Dravinja river. The new square (Mestni trg) is situated on the other bank of the river, connected with old square by "horse bridge".

Tartini Square
The Tartini Square (Slovene: Tartinijev trg, Italian: Piazza Tartini) is the largest and main square in the town of Piran, Slovenia. It was named after a famous violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, of whom a mounument was made in 1896.
The square was once an inner dock for smaller vessels such as fishing boats, and was located outside of the first city walls. In the Middle Ages the dock became surrounded by important buildings and palaces, because of which it became an important site of the town, however because of sewage which ended up there the officials decided to bury the dock and set up a real square there in 1894. Around the newly created platform various new buildings appeared, of which the only one that still has the original exterior is the gothic house named Benečanka. From 1909 to 1912 a trolleybus path was made which connected Piran to the trainstation in Lucija where the Parenzana railway was made which connected Trieste and Poreč with various other towns. After 1912 the trolleybus was replaced by the more efficient tram which was opeational until 1953 when it was abolished. After the tram railways were put away a huge renovation of the square occurred, when an ellipse platform was formed out of white stone, designed by arhitect Boris Podrecca.

The Tartini House (Slovene: Tartinijeva hiša) is the birthplace of Giuseppe Tartini, a violinist from Piran. The house is located on Tartini Square in the town of Piran.
The building is one of the oldest on the square, first mentioned in 1384 as a gothic building named Casa Pizagrua. It was later renovated in neoclassical style. The most recent renovation, which took place from 1985 to 1991, revealed interesting wall paintings. The house is now the seat of the Italian community in Slovenia and is used as a venue for cultural projects, a gallery, and a museum. The museum part displays Tartini's violin, a copperplate engraving of his dreams, and his portrait, among other items.

Trbovlje ( pronunciation (help·info)) is a town and municipality in central Slovenia. Traditionally the area was part of the Lower Styria region. The entire municipality is now included in the Central Sava statistical region. Located in the valley of a minor left bank tributary of the Sava River, the area is known for its rich deposits of coal. Coal mining began in the area in 1804. In 1849 the town was connected Austrian Southern Railway and this allowed for its further development. There are three power plants in the area. The landmark feature of the Trbovlje power plant is the Trbovlje Chimney - reputedly the tallest chimney in Europe (360 m). A major section of the local museum (Slovene: Zasavski Muzej Trbovlje) is dedicated to the history of mining in the area.
The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Martin and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Celje. It was originally a Romanesque church, of which part of the nave survives. The sanctuary is Gothic and in the 18th century a Baroque belfry and chapel were added. In the 19th century the nave was extended. A second church in the western end of town is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and was built in the 18th century.

Trebnje is a town in Slovenia. The town lies on the Temenica River in the traditional region of Lower Carniola. The area was settled by humans already in the Stone Age. In the Roman times, a settlement named Praetorium Latobicorum was located in the area, along the road linking Emona and Siscia. After the decline of the Roman Empire, the first mention of Trebnje as a market town dates to 1351, whereas a primitive parish is mentioned already in 1163.

Trzin

Tržič
Tržič is a town and municipality in northern Slovenia near the Austrian border (before the Loibl Pass). The first settlement was founded near the road that connected Roman city of Emona with Virunum in present-day Carinthia. After a landslide caused by an earthquake, the original settlement was destroyed and many people moved down the valley to establish a new settlement named Neumarktl where Tržič is now located (these events are the basis of the legend about the origin of Tržič). The town was granted market rights in 1492, which caused further development of the town.
The great fire of 1811, which destroyed the buildings on the left bank of the Tržiška Bistrica River, changed the town. After the buildings were rebuilt they needed to have firewalls, iron doors, and window covers, a very rare feature in Europe. The town center of Tržič has been protected as a cultural heritage site since 1985.
As of 2007 the town had a population of 15,851. Much of the town's architecture was constructed in the Classicist style. The leather, wood, and textile industries were important to the economy of Tržič in the past but industrial activity declined after the breakup of Yugoslavia. The development of small business after this period is now an important branch of the economy.

Turnišče
Turnišče (Hungarian: Bántornya, Prekmurian Türnišče, or Törnišča, German: Turnitz) is a town and a municipality in Slovenia. It is first mentioned in written documents dating to the 13th century. In 1524 it was granted market rights and town privileges in 1548.

Valletta
Valletta is the capital of Malta, colloquially known as Il-Belt (English: The City) in Maltese. Velika Polana

Vipava, Slovenia
Vipava (Italianized: Vipacco, German: Wippach) is a small town in western Slovenia with 1500 inhabitants. It is the center of a municipality with 5,185 people. Vipava is built near the numerous sources of the Vipava River, in the upper Vipava Valley, 102 m above sea level. Historically, it used to be a part of the traditional region of Inner Carniola, but it is now generally regarded as a part of the Slovenian Littoral.
The region around the town was probably settled by the Illyrians and Celts in the pre-Roman era. Some trace the name Vipava to the Celtic root vip (river). In 394, the Battle of the Frigidus took place in the vicinity of the town. In the late 6th century, Slavic tribes, ancestors of modern Slovenes, settled the area. In the late 8th century, the Vipava Valley was included in the Frankish Empire and the Christianization of Slovenes started.
In the Middle Ages, the valley was first included in the Duchy of Friuli. Between 1340 and 1355, Vipava and its surroundings were constantly contended between the Counts of Gorizia, the Patriarches of Aquileia and the Habsburg Duchy of Carniola. Modern Vipava was first mentioned in 1367. In the same period, it was finally included in the County of Gorizia. After a short Venetian interim, Vipava fell under the Habsburg domain in 1501 and in 1535 it was included in Carniola. In the mid-16th century, it emerged as an important center of the Protestant Reformation. It remained part of Carniola until 1918, when it was occupied by the Italian troops and annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Vrhnika became a market town and was considered to be among the wealthiest towns in Carniola, up to the early 18th century, when it started to lose importance. Nevertheless, it remained one of main transportation junctions in Inner Austria, because of its strategic location on the croassroads between the Trieste-Vienna and Rijeka-Klagenfurt trade routes. The development of the town was however strongly impaired by the construction of the Austrian Southern Railway in the 1840s, which bypassed it. From then on, it started losing importance, becoming a satellite town of Ljubljana, which has remained up to this day.

Vuzenica
Vuzenica is a town and a municipality in northern Slovenia. It lies on the right bank of the Drava River and extends south into the Pohorje Hills. Zagorje ob Savi
Zagorje ob Savi is a town and a municipality in central Slovenia. It is located in the valley of Medija Creek, a minor left-bank tributary of the Sava River, 52 km (32 mi) east of Ljubljana 36 km (22 mi) southwest of Celje, and 6 km (4 mi) west of Trbovlje. In 1755 deposits of coal were discovered in the area and the town's economic development began. Coal mining was one of the area's main activities until 1995, when the last mines were closed. In 2010, Zagorje ob Savi was heavily affected by floods.

Zavrč
Zavrč is a settlement and a municipality in Haloze area of Slovenia. It lies between the right bank of the Drava River and the border with Croatia. The area traditionally belonged to the region of Styria. It is now included in the Drava statistical region.

Zreče
Zreče is a town and a municipality in northeast Slovenia. It lies on the slopes of Pohorje in the upper valley of the Dravinja River. Traditionally the area was part of the Lower Styria region. The municipality is now included in the Savinja statistical region. In 2002 it had a population of 6,245, growing to 6,443 according to the 2008 census. Črna na Koroškem
Črna na Koroškem (German: Schwarzenbach) is a town and a municipality in northern Slovenia. It lies in the traditional Slovenian province of Carinthia, close to the border with Austria. Since 2005 it is part of the larger Koroška statistical region.
The municipal area stretches along the valley of the upper Meža River at the confluence with its tributary Javorski potok. The surrounding mountains of the Karavanke and Kamnik–Savinja Alps ranges include the Peca massif at the Austrian border in the northwest, with the Kordeževa glava summit reaching an elevation of 2,126 m (6,975 ft). Due to its picturesque setting, Črna is a popular destination for mountain hikers.

Črnomelj
Črnomelj (German: Tschernembl, Italian: Cernomegli) is a town and municipality in southeastern Slovenia. It lies on the left bank of the Lahinja and Dobličica rivers. The municipality is at the heart of the area of White Carniola, the southeastern part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola. It is now included in the Southeast Slovenia statistical region.
Archaeological evidence has shown that the area has been settled since from late bronze age onwards with the settlement gradually developing through the iron age. The exact year of the destruction of the iron age settlement by Romans is not known. The evidence allows the presumption, that it was destroyed either during the Octavians campaign against the Illyrians between 35-33 BC, Tiberius's campaign in Pannonia in 12-9 BC or in the Great Illyrian revolt of 6-9 AD; that is, in the time span between 35 BC and 9 AD. It was first mentioned as Schirnomel in written documents dating to 1228, specifically a charter issued by the Patriarch of Aquileia. Before 1277 it was granted market rights and developed into a regional center. It is mentioned as a town in 1407, so it supposedly gained town privileges prior to that, but it is regularly mentioned as a market even after that. During the 16th century it held an important military position as one of the centers for organization of supply for the military frontier. After the establishment of Karlovac in what is now Croatia in 1579, it lost that position.

Škofja Loka
Škofja Loka (literally, 'bishop's meadow') is a town in Slovenia. It is the economic, cultural, educational, and administrative centre of the Municipality of Škofja Loka in Upper Carniola, at the confluence of the Poljane Sora and the Selca Sora rivers, at the transition of the Sora Plain into the Škofja Loka Hills and the Polhov Gradec Hills. Škofja Loka lies at an elevation of 354 metres (1,161 ft). Its old centre stands on river terraces, and comprises Town Square (Plac) and Lower Square (Lontrg). On a plateau above the town stands Loka Castle, which houses the Loka Museum. Above the castle rises Krancelj Hill (475 metres or 1,558 feet). North of the town centre is Kamnitnik Hill (414 metres or 1,358 feet high), known for its conglomerate rock.

Škofljica is a settlement and a municipality in central Slovenia. It lies on the eastern edge of the marshlands to the south of the capital Ljubljana. The whole municipality is part of the traditional region of Inner Carniola and is now included in the Central Slovenia statistical region.

Šmarje pri Jelšah is a town and a municipality in eastern Slovenia. The area was part of the traditional region of Lower Styria. The municipality is now included in the Savinja statistical region. The development of the settlement is associated with a medieval mansion known as Jelšingrad on a slight hill northwest of the town.

The parish church from which the settlement gets its name (Šmartno < *Šmartən < *šent Martin 'Saint Martin') is dedicated to Saint Martin and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Celje. It is first mentioned in written documents dated to 1256. The current building dates to the 18th century but some 15th century frescos are preserved in the belfry.

Šmartno pri Litiji
Šmartno pri Litiji is a town and a municipality in central Slovenia. It is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Central Slovenian statistical region. The town itself is located 3 km southeast of Litija at the confluence of three creeks: Reka, Črni potok and Kostrevniški potok. The town of Litija outgrew the formerly more important Šmartno when the Austrian Southern Railway was routed through Litija. The name of the settlement is first attested in ecclesiastical documents from 1135, although the area was already settled in prehistoric times. The oldest house in Šmartno pri Litiji bears the year 1580, and in the 17th century the Mollerey painting and graphic arts workshop operated in it.
The center of the town is dominated by the neo-Gothic church dedicated to Saint Martin, from which the settlement gets its name (Šent Martin > Šmartno). It belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ljubljana. The church was designed by the architect Adolf Wagner, and was built between 1899 and 1901 on the site of an earlier church mentioned in written documents dating to 1363. The interior of the church is illuminated by light coming through stained-glass windows designed by Anton Jebačin. According to a legend, the church was built on the place where trapped miners in Šmartno were once rescued on Martinmas.

Šoštanj
Šoštanj is a town and municipality in northern Slovenia. It was first mentioned in written documents dating to around 1200 as Schönstein in relation to its castle. As a market town it was first mentioned in 1348. It was given town status in 1919 and until the 1960s was the center of the Šalek Valley (Slovene: Šaleška dolina). In 1963 nearby Velenje became the administrative center. Šoštanj again became a municipal center in the late 1990s. The town has a long leather-working history, with industrial-scale activity going back to 1788. The factory was owned by the Woschnagg family, a Germanized branch of the Vošnjak family, until it was nationalized in 1945. The processing factory was closed down in 1999. A leather industry museum is now open in the town.
Šoštanj is the site of a large coal-fired power station.
The parish church in the town is dedicated to Michael the Archangel and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Celje. A second church in town was built in 1776 on the site of a 13th-century predecessor and is dedicated to Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus.

Žalec
Žalec is a town and municipality in central Slovenia. It lies in the valley of the lower course of the Savinja River to the west of Celje. The primary economic activity of the region is growing hops, which is reflected by the city's coat-of-arms. The area was part of the traditional region of Lower Styria. The municipality is now included in the Savinja statistical region.
The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to the Saint Nicholas and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Celje. It was built between 1903 and 1906 on the site of a 16th-century church. The 16th-century building had a walled enclosure to protect the locals against Ottoman raids. A round tower from this enclosure still stands next to the church.

Železniki
Železniki is a small town and a municipality in Slovenia. It is the economic centre and the largest settlement in the Selca Valley. It used to be known for iron smelting, and its name in Slovene indicates a relation to ironworks. The first furnace was mentioned in 1422, and the original furnace was replaced in 1826 by a blast furnace which ceased operating in about 1902. Certain relatively large factories are based in Železniki, including Alples, Domel and Niko. These firms sponsor local sports teams such as the Alples handball team, football team NK Železniki and the Galaks floorball team.
The architecture of the old part of the settlement is mainly from the 17th century. The main attraction in the town is its museum with exhibits related to ironworking and other local activities. Part of the original smelting furnace is preserved outside the museum and also appears in the coat of arms of the town.

Žetale
Žetale is a village and a municipality in eastern Slovenia, on the border with Croatia. The area traditionally belonged to the region of Styria. It is now included in the Drava statistical region.
The village of Čermožiše has evidence of a settlement from the neolithic era. Žetale was first mentioned in written documents dating to 1228, and old parish documents record its name as Schiltarin. The area was subject to repeated Ottoman invasion, and thus pseudoetymological claims that the village is named after a supposed defender of the village named Žetal. In fact, the name is derived from Middle High German Schiltern. As of 2002, the village of Žetale had a population of 390.
A chestnut festival in October is a locally well known. There is an annual pilgrimage called Jarmek held on 15 August, the feast day of the Assumption of Mary and a public holiday in Slovenia, where pilgrims walk to the church of Mary Help of Christians (Slovene: Marija pomočnica), known locally as Marijatrošt.
The flag and coat of arms of Žetale are a principally green and yellow design, featuring sweet chestnut leaves and fruit. Above it on the coat of arms is a castle embattlement upon which stands the flaming sword and scales of the Archangel Michael.

Žirovnica
Žirovnica (German: Scheraunitz) is a municipality in Slovenia. It is located in the historic Upper Carniola region, on the southern slope of the Karavanke mountain range, close to the border with Austria. The municipality borders with Jesenice to the west, Bled and Radovljica to the south, and Tržič to the east.
There are ten settlements in the municipality: Breg, Breznica, Doslovče, Moste, Rodine, Selo, Smokuč, Vrba, Zabreznica and Žirovnica. The municipal administration is based in Breznica.
A number of figures important to Slovenes come from the Municipality of Žirovnica: the poet France Prešeren, the linguist Matija Čop, Archbishop Anton Vovk, the pioneering bee-keeper Anton Janša, and the writers Janez Jalen and Fran Saleški Finžgar. Bronze busts of all five have been put up in front of the school in Zabreznica. There is a well-marked trail through the villages called The Cultural Heritage Route. This can be followed to visit certain monuments associated with the above figures (e.g., the houses where Prešeren, Čop, Finžgar, and Jalen were born, all of which are small museums, Janša's beehive) and a number of other historical and cultural monuments in the area.

Žužemberk
Žužemberk (German: Seisenberg), is a town and a municipality in the Dinaric Alps of Slovenia, located south-east of the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana. The area is part of the historical region of Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Southeast Slovenia statistical region. As of 2002 the municipality had a total population of 4579. Žužemberk lies in the southern part of Carniola on the left bank of the Krka River and is dominated by a medieval castle. The parish church was completely destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in recent years. The municipality contains around three settlements.
The Romans built a road through the region. Žužemberk is first mentioned in written documents dating to 1246. In 1399 it was granted market rights. The castle is believed to date back to around 1000, and the castle chapel dedicated to of St. Ulrich was built in 1046. The village that grew around the castle was located at the intersection of roads, and most of its inhabitants were craftsmen or peasants who traded their goods and organised fairs.

Eurasian Avars
The Eurasian Avars or Ancient Avars ( /ˈævɑrz/) were a Turkic people from the steppes of Central Asia, and later they became a confederation of Eurasian tribes of mixed origin. They were ruled by a khagan, who was surrounded by a tight-knit entourage of nomad warriors. Although the name Avar first appeared in the mid-fifth century, the Avars of Europe enter the historical scene in the mid-sixth century AD, when they established a pax spanning considerable areas of Central and Eastern Europe. Their state was the Avar Khaganate. The rule of their country over much of the Pannonian Plain persisted until the early 9th century.
The origin of the Eurasian Avars is unclear. Information about origins is derived primarily from the works of Byzantine historians Menander Protector and Theophylact Simocatta. John of Ephesus used the term "those, who are called "Avars," because of their long hair." The confusion is compounded by the fact that many clans carried a particular name because they believed it to be prestigious, or it was attributed to them by outsiders describing their common characteristics, believed place of origin or reputation.^{[citation needed]} Such a case has been seen repeatedly for many nomadic confederacies.

Franks
The Franks (Latin: Franci or gens Francorum) were a confederation of Germanic tribes first attested in the third century AD as populating a broad strip of land on the right bank of the Lower and Middle Rhine River. From the third to fifth centuries some Franks raided Roman territory while other Franks joined the Roman troops in Gaul. Only the Salian Franks formed a kingdom on Roman-held soil that was acknowledged by the Romans after 357. In the climate of the collapse of imperial authority in the West, the Frankish tribes were united under the Merovingians and conquered all of Gaul except Septimania in the 6th century. The Salian political elite was one of the most active forces in spreading Christianity over western Europe. The Franks had created one of the most strong and stable barbaric kingdoms.
The Merovingian dynasty, descended from the Salians, founded one of the Germanic monarchies which replaced the Western Roman Empire from the fifth century. The Frankish state consolidated its hold over large parts of western Europe by the end of the eighth century, developing into the Carolingian Empire which dominated most of Western Europe. This empire would gradually evolve into France and the Holy Roman Empire.

Giuseppe Tartini
Giuseppe Tartini (8 April 1692 – 26 February 1770) was an Italian baroque composer and violinist.
Tartini was born in Piran, a town on the peninsula of Istria, in the Republic of Venice (now in Slovenia) to Gianantonio – native of Florence – and Caterina Zangrando, a descendant of one of the oldest aristocratic Piranian families.
It appears Tartini's parents intended him to become a Franciscan friar and in this way he received a basic musical training. He studied law at the University of Padua, where he became skilled at fencing. After his father's death in 1710, he married Elisabetta Premazone, a woman his father would have disapproved of because of her lower social class and age difference. Unfortunately, Elisabetta was a favorite of the powerful Cardinal Giorgio Cornaro, who promptly charged Tartini with abduction. Tartini fled Padua to go to the monastery of St. Francis in Assisi, where he could escape prosecution. While there he took up playing the violin.
Legend says when Giuseppe Tartini heard Francesco Maria Veracini's playing in 1716, he was impressed by it and dissatisfied with his own skill. He fled to Ancona and locked himself away in a room to practice, according to Charles Burney, "in order to study the use of the bow in more tranquility, and with more convenience than at Venice, as he had a place assigned him in the opera orchestra of that city".

"Croatian Istria" is divided into two counties, the larger being Istria County in western Croatia. Important towns in Istria County include Pula, Poreč, Rovinj, Pazin, Labin, Umag, Motovun, Buzet, and Buje. Smaller towns in Istria County include Višnjan, Roč, and Hum.
The northwestern part of Istria lies in Slovenia: it is known as Slovenian Istria, and includes the coastal municipalities of Piran, Izola and Koper, and the Karstic municipality of Hrpelje-Kozina. Northwards of Slovenian Istria, there is a tiny portion of the peninsula that lies in Italy. This smallest portion of Istria consists of the comunes of Muggia and San Dorligo della Valle.

Peter Bossman
Peter Bossman (born 2 November 1955) is a Ghanaian-born Slovenian doctor and politician. He is currently serving as mayor of Piran, a city and municipality in Slovenian Istria in south-western Slovenia. A member of the centre-left Social Democrats, he defeated the incumbent mayor Tomaž Gantar in the October 2010 mayoral election to become Slovenia's first black mayor. In 2011 he was also appointed to the Committee of the Regions of the European Union.
Bossman was born in Nyive, a small place near Ho, the capital of Ghana's modern-day Volta Region, on 2 November 1955. Ho was then the capital of British Togoland, a League of Nations Class B mandate that would become part of the Gold Coast, a British Crown colony, in 1956. The Gold Coast would subsequently gain independence as Ghana in 1957. Bossman came from a relatively well-off family. His father was a politician, as well as a friend and personal physician of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's leader from independence. Bossman spent much of his early life in North Africa, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, where his father helped found Ghanaian embassies.

Piran (Italian: Pirano) is a town in the eponymous municipality in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. The town resembles a large open-air museum, with medieval architecture and a rich cultural heritage. Narrow streets and compact houses give the town its special charm. Piran is the administrative centre of the local area and one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions.

Piran in the Middle ages

In the pre-Roman era, the hills in the Piran area were inhabited by Illyrian Histri tribes who were farmers, hunters and fishermen. They were also pirates who disrupted Roman trade in the north Adriatic Sea.^[2] The Piran peninsula was incorporated into the Roman Empire in 178 and 177 BC and settled in the following years with rural homes (ville rusticae).

The decline of the Empire, from the 5th century AD onwards, and incursions by the Avars and Slavs at the end of the 6th century, prompted the Roman population to withdraw into easily defensible locations such as islands or peninsulas. This started local urbanisation and by the 7th century, under Byzantine rule, Piran had become heavily fortified. Despite the defences, the Franks conquered Istria in 788 and Slavs settled in the region. By 952, Piran had become a part of the Holy Roman Empire.^[2] The earliest reliable records of the area are in the 7th century work Cosmographia by an anonymous cleric of Ravenna. The name of the town most probably originates from the Greek "pyrranos", which means "red", because of the reddish flysch stones commonly found in the town's area.^[3]

On 22 February 1812, the Battle of Pirano was fought between a British and a French ship of the line in the vicinity of Piran. This was a minor battle of the Adriatic campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. The French Rivoli had been recently completed at Venice. The French naval authorities intended her to bolster French forces in the Adriatic, following a succession of defeats in the preceding year. Captain John Talbot of HMS Victorious arrived off Venice in mid-February and blockaded the port. When Rivoli attempted to escape under the cover of fog, Talbot chased her and forced her to surrender in a five hour battle, Rivoli lost over half her crew as either wounded or dead. This was the only battle ever fought in the sea nowadays belonging to Slovenia.

The first trolleybus line in the Balkans was introduced to public service on 24 October 1909 in Piran, then part of Austria-Hungary. It ran from the Tartini Square, the central square of the town, along the coast and the shipyard to Portorož and Lucija. The town authorities bought five trolleybuses manufactured by the Austrian company Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft.^[4]^[5] In 1912, it was replaced by a tram that operated on the same route till 1953.

On 24 October 2010, Slovenia became the first country of former communist Europe to elect a black mayor. The physician Peter Bossman, who came over from Ghana in the late 1970s, was elected mayor of Piran. He officially took office at the first constitutional meeting of the municipal council on 12 November 2010, succeeding Tomaž Gantar.^[6] He represents the Social Democrats.^[7]^[8]

Culture and education [link]

Piran is the birthplace of composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini, who played an important role in shaping its cultural heritage. The town's main square, Tartini Square (Slovene: Tartinijev trg, Italian: Piazza Tartini), is named after him. In 1892, to mark the 200th anniversary of Tartini's birth, the people of Piran decided to erect a monument in his honour. Venetian artist Antonio dal Zotto was commissioned to create the larger-than-life bronze statue of the maestro, which was eventually mounted on its pedestal in 1896. The statue dominates the square, overlooked by the Cathedral of Saint George.

Piran is now the seat of the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI), founded in 2008 as one of the cultural projects of the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean. The Piran Coastal Galleries, a public institution encompassing a group of six public contemporary art galleries, is based in Piran.^[9]

The municipality's festival is on October 15, which celebrates the foundation of the first Slovenian partisan naval detachment named Koper, in 1944. This was the first ever Slovenian naval military unit.

Geography and climate [link]

Piran is situated at the tip of the Piran peninsula on the Gulf of Piran. It borders Croatia to the south, and the municipalities of Izola and Koper to the east and faces Italy across the Gulf of Trieste and the Adriatic Sea. The highest point, Baretovec pri Padni, is 289 metres high.^[10]

To the east of the town, along the northern coastline (in the direction to Strunjan) there is a small tourist settlement named Fiesa. Piran and Fiesa are connected by a promenade along the beach.

Piran has a Humid subtropical climate with warm summers and cool rainy winters. Snow is rare (usually 3 days per year, almost always in traces). There are 22 days a year with maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) or higher, while one day a year temperature does not exceed 0 °C (32 °F). Fog appears in about 4 days per year, mainly in winter. The climate is also characterized by frequent rainfall.

Tartini Square

The municipality has 16,758 (2002) inhabitants and covers an area of 46.6 square kilometres; the town has 4,576 (2002) inhabitants in a single square kilometre. The municipality is bilingual, both Slovene and Italian are official languages.^[11] According to the Austrian language census of 1910, there were 7,379 inhabitants in the town proper, 95,97% Italians and 0,09% Slovenes. In the surrounding countryside, which is now included within the town limits, the population was mixed, both Italian and Slovene, with some villages (like Sveti Peter or Padna) which were almost entirely Slovene, and others (like Sečovlje or Seča) that were almost exclusively Italian-speaking. In 1945, there were 5,035 citizens, 91,32% Italians and 8,54% Slovenes. In 1956. there were 3.574 inhabitants, 67,6% Slovenes and 15,5% Italians. After 1947, the ethnic composition changed radically due to the migration of Italians to Italy and their replacement with Slovene settlers, both from other areas of Slovenian Istria and from interior areas of the country.

Piran was heavily influenced by the Venetian Republic and Austria-Hungary, therefore the monuments differ greatly from the ones in inner parts of Slovenia. The Piran town walls were constructed to protect the town from Ottoman incursions, and many parts of the town walls from different eras remain up to this day and are important attractions for tourists. In the middle of the town the Tartini Square is located, on which a monument in memory of Giuseppe Tartini stands since 1896. Nearby are located various important buildings, such as, Tartini’s house which is first mentioned in 1384, and is one of the oldest in town, the Municipal Palace, Loggia and Benečanka, among others. On the hill above the town is the biggest and most important church, the Church of Saint George, with the Franciscan monastery nearby.

Portorož Airport

There are an international airport^[12] and a marina in the vicinity of the town.^[13] Piran is also the transmission site of the medium-wave transmitter of Radio Koper. It works on 1170 kHz and uses as an antenna a 123.6 metres tall guyed mast with cage antenna. The town is connected with Koper, Izola, Portorož (the location of the airport), Sečovlje and Lucija by a cheap bus line, while the bus line connecting to the parking lot in Fornače is free. The lines of other coastal settlement operate mostly during the tourist season.^[14]
