The Need was a queercore band that originated in Olympia, Washington in the late 1990s. It was formed by Rachel Carns (drums and vocals) and Radio Sloan (guitar and bass guitar); both were veterans of other indie rock bands. Carns was previously in Kicking Giant, The Fakes, Witchypoo, Slant 6. Both members of The Need were in CeBe Barnes Band along with Miranda July and Sleater-Kinney drummer Toni Gogin. The Need made their debut in Olympia, Washington, and, in the summer of 1996, they played at the Dirtybird Queercore Festival in San Francisco.
The band's first project was Margie Ruskie Stops Time, released in 1996 by Kill Rock Stars, on which The Need provided the music to accompany the words and vocals of Miranda July. July also performed with the band at the Dirty Bird Festival.
Their last album, recorded in 2000, was titled The Need Is Dead. On this recording they further expanded their range of instrumentation with the addition of synthesizer and samples contributed by Joe Preston of The Melvins; and theremin, played by producer Mike Lastra of Smegma.
Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 – 15 December 2011) was an English American author and journalist whose career spanned more than four decades. Hitchens, often referred to colloquially as "Hitch", was a columnist and literary critic for New Statesman, The Atlantic, The Nation, The Daily Mirror, The Times Literary Supplement and Vanity Fair. He was an author of twelve books and five collections of essays. As a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits, he was a prominent public intellectual, and his confrontational style of debate made him both a lauded and controversial figure.
Hitchens was known for his admiration of George Orwell, Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, as well as for his excoriating critiques of various public figures including Mother Teresa, Bill Clinton, Henry Kissinger and Diana, Princess of Wales. Although he supported the Falklands War, his key split from the established political left began in 1989 after what he called the "tepid reaction" of the Western left to the Rushdie Affair. The September 11 attacks strengthened his internationalist embrace of an interventionist foreign policy, and his vociferous criticism of what he called "fascism with an Islamic face." His numerous editorials in support of the Iraq War caused some to label him a neoconservative, although Hitchens insisted he was not "a conservative of any kind", and his friend Ian McEwan describes him as representing the anti-totalitarian left.

Get the need
Get it.
I'm in the movies.
Hello young thing
I'm an old film star
Maybe you've seen my picture.
I need it
Like an old newsreel
I'm just fading away.
Bang bang dear
I've got the needles
And I've got the need
If you'd be so kind.
Come on and feel the need in me
Come on and feel the need.
Feel it!
Hello young thing
I've got reverse instructions
In the back of my car.
I need it
Don't cry till this thing is over
And my friends applaud.
Bang bang dear
When can we do this again
And put it all on film
Hello young love
I've got something to show you
And please don't be ashamed.
I'm the man
I'm the atrocity film star
And I've got the need.
Anything you need
I cant be anything you need
Now i walk alone i find a way
All of my prayers unanswered
All of my careless actions
Failures catastrophy
This is killing me
Somewhere in here
Kindly nail yourself
Upon your thoughts
Yourve never had enough
Pain to feel at all
Its coming up now
Fade the cross from my memory
What part of this is saving me
And what exactly is it saving me for
I dont need to believe
Anymore
I look back upon my life
I find it hard to find
The right words that wont hurt
And brings me back to my knees
Nail yourself upon your thoughts
Close your eyes
I spent my life trying to avoid it
I always said it was wrong for me
A sign of weakness, that's how I saw it
And weak was something I didn't want to be
It wasn't love I was runnin' from
I was just afraid to need someone
Now it feels so good to feel
The need to trust somebody
And open up my heart
The need to share my secrets
Down to the deepest part
I can give, I can take
Now it's okay to say
That sometimes I feel weak
When you're the reason for the need
You had the strength to cry on my shoulder
You weren't ashamed to lean on me
The honesty kept drawing us closer
And I saw how easy reaching out could be
You showed me love's not about control
Holding on to you is how I let go
And it feels so good to feel
The need to trust somebody
And open up my heart
The need to share my secrets
Down to the deepest part
I can give, I can take
Now it's okay to say
That sometimes I feel weak
When you're the reason for
The need to trust somebody
And open up my heart
The need to share my secrets
Down to the deepest part
I can give, I can take
Now it's okay to say
That sometimes I feel weak
When you're the reason for
Why am I my worst enemy?
I'm in my personal hell.
Why can't I get away from me?
I'm lost inside of myself.
Day turns to night,
Can't get it right.
I've been trying so long,
Still got it wrong.
And I'm breaking down,
On my knees, on my knees.
Because I'm fading out
From the need, from the need.
[chorus]
Why am I my worst enemy?
I'm in my personal hell.
Why can't I get away from me?
I'm lost inside of myself.
Only the mind holds the key.
(holds the key, set me free)
Just give me my remedy.
(for the need, for the need)
I'm fading out from the need.
The steps I retrace,
I can't ever erase.
I just need one more chance,
To find innocence.
And I'm breaking down,
On my knees, on my knees.
Because I'm fading out
From the need, from the need.
[chorus]
Remedy is what I need.
To be freed from the fall,
To begin of it all.
Remedy is what I need.
I'm fading out form the need.
Day turns to night, can't get it right.
because I'm fading out
From the need, from the need.
If only for a micro-moment
I'll take your breath your inhibition
It's only just a halfway notion
I can't fight you
I can't fight you
Hear you counting, hear you calling
See you pounding, see you crawling
Feel you grinding, feel you gnawing
Yeah, hear you calling
Bite it, hide it, I can't fight it, you don't mind it
Tried it, liked it, you said buy it, yeah...
Bite it, hide it, I can't fight it, you don't mind it
Tried it, liked it, you said buy it, yeah...
I've got this tragic complication
Twisted and torn sweet inspiration
I secretly beg for a reason
I can't fight you
I can't fight you
Hear you counting, hear you calling
See you pounding, see you crawling
Feel you grinding, feel you gnawing
Yeah, hear you calling
Bite it, hide it, I can't fight it, you don't mind it
Tried it, liked it, you said buy it, yeah...
Bite it, hide it, I can't fight it, you don't mind it
Tried it, liked it, you said buy it, yeah...
Come, give it to me baby, come, hit me with it right
there
Just give it up and feel the deep-set need inside of me
This need i met, it came to bed, but still i fought and
fled, i rot and bled
Yet everything is said, is said, is said... is said
Bite it, hide it, I can't fight it, you don't mind it
Tried it, liked it, you said buy it, yeah...
Bite it, hide it, I can't fight it, you don't mind it
The world that we share
One moment in time
The threads that connect us
The lifeforce inside
A few precious memories
The choices we make
A future uncertain
The chances we take
Will we be outnumbered?
Forced to take a stand
Struggle for survival
Dare to lend a hand
Will we be outnumbered?
Forced to take a stand
Fight for our survival
Kill our fellow man
But, this is not the path that I chose...
We spoil the water
The air that we breathe
The land that sustains us
The life that it feeds
It drastically changes
The temperatures rise
The population exploding
The hole in the sky
Will we be outnumbered?
Forced to take a stand
Struggle for our survival
Dare to lend a hand
Will we be outnumbered?
Forced to take a stand
Fight for our survival
Kill our fellow man
But, this is not the path that I chose...
This is not where I chose to go
This is not the fate I chose to know
It's not down the path I chose to follow
Why?
Where do we go?
What do we do?
What did we hope to find?
The silence is loud
Fighting the crowd
We're all running out of time
Push it too far
Letting it go
Leaving it teetering on the edge
You can have faith
That all will be saved
