Bhutan (/buːˈtɑːn/; Dzongkha འབྲུག་ཡུལ Dru Ü, IPA: [ʈʂɦu yː]), officially the Kingdom of Bhutan, is a landlocked country in South Asia at the eastern end of the Himalayas. It is bordered to the north by China and to the south, east and west by India. To the west, it is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim, while farther south it is separated from Bangladesh by the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal. Bhutan's capital and largest city is Thimphu.
Bhutan existed as a patchwork of minor warring fiefs until the early 17th century. At that time the lama and military leader Ngawang Namgyal, the first Zhabdrung Rinpoche, who was fleeing religious persecution in Tibet, unified the area and cultivated a distinct Bhutanese identity. In the early 20th century, Bhutan came into contact with the British Empire and retained strong bilateral relations with India upon its independence. In 2006, based on a global survey, Business Week rated Bhutan the happiest country in Asia and the eighth-happiest in the world.
The distance of highway from the city of Paro to Thimphu is 55, and from the Paro International Airport is 50 kms. It takes 50 to 60 minutes. This video clip includes the scene of Paro Dzong. The first place your Visit in Bhutan is the Paro valley. This picturesque valley is an excellent introduction to the Kingdom of Bhutan. I was personally blown away by the stunning beauty and the friendliness of the locals. As I was to soon discover, this was only the beginning.
Landing on the Paro International Airport is basically visual by a skilful pilot of the Druk Air. Please watch a spectacular scene of approaching process to the airport. This video clip was taken on September 21, 2012. http://www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~MCFW-jm/bhutan2012.htm

The airport is located 6 km (3.7 mi) from Paro in a deep valley on the bank of the river Paro Chhu at an elevation of 7,300 ft (2,200 m). With surrounding peaks as high as 18,000 ft (5,500 m) it is considered one of the world's most challenging airports, and as of October 2014, only 25 pilots in the world are certified to land at the airport. Paro is a town and seat of Paro District in the Paro Valley of Bhutan. It is home to Paro Airport, Bhutan's only international airport. Along the main street there is a complex of traditional architecture with richly decorated buildings housing small shops, institutions and restaurants.Rinpung Dzong a fortress-monastery overlooking the Paro valley has a long history. A monastery was first built on the site by Padma Sambhava at the beginning of the tenth century, but it wasn't until 1644 that Ngawang Namgyal built a larger monastery on the old foundations, and for centuries this imposing five storey building served as an effective defence against numerous invasion attempts by the Tibetans. Built with stones instead of clay, the Dzong was named Rinpung, meaning "heaps of jewels" but Rinpun...
Tiger's Nest is a not to be missed and the best attraction, when in Bhutan. It is a Monastry, built on the egde of a vertical rock cliff, almost 900 meters above the base in Paro valley. The climb up is straineous and takes at least three hours for a healthy person to reach. There is an option to ride up on a horse, but retuning journey has to be done on foot.Even to reach the top point where horses can carry you, it takes almost two and a half hours. Again from that point you have to walk a short distance, then down 250 steps, pass a waterfall and climb up another 200 odd steps to reach the Monastry. The place is really amazing. One can not imagine how this grand Monastry and three temples were built at such a diificult location. A visit is like having reached an Eighth wonder of our world....
This is a time lapse video (8x faster than real time) of driving from Thimphu to Paro, and then on to our hotel just beyound Paro.
Landing at Paro airport is said to be one of the more difficult landings at any airport in the world, as the valley is surrounded by steep hillsides and snow mountains and any approach or exit from the valley must be rapid and steep, in order to surmount the valley walls. Here, a Bhutan Airlines aeroplane belonging to the Tashi Group comes in to land at the only airport in the land-locked Kingdom of Bhutan, sending up a plume of water behind each engine, on the runway, thanks to the recent winter rain... Imagine negotiating cold weather, low temperatures, high altitude, a sudden descent and rainfall, to top it all, when landing this huge machine? Paro is the only airport in Bhutan which is located in a deep valley at an elevation of 7300 ft above sea level. The surrounding hills are hig...
