Exclaim! (also known as exclaim!) is a monthly Canadian music magazine that features in-depth coverage of new music across all genres with special focus on Canadian and cutting-edge artists. Content is based on the monthly print publication, publishes 11 issues per year, distributing over 100,000 copies to over 2,600 locations across Canada.^[1][2]

Exclaim! began as a discussion among college radio programmers at Ryerson's CKLN-FM in 1991. The goal of the publication was to support the great Canadian music that was otherwise going unheralded. Started by Ian Danzig along with fellow programmers and local Toronto musicians, the group worked through 1991 to produce their first issue at the beginning of 1992, with monthly issues being produced ever since.

The magazine is distributed as a free publication in bars, record stores, libraries, and coffee shops, in a manner similar to an alternative weekly newspaper, although it also offers mail delivery subscriptions.^[3] With Chart's decision to cease publication of its newsstand edition in January 2009, Exclaim! is now Canada's only nationally-distributed general interest music magazine operating as a print publication.

The magazine's website, exclaim.ca, also features reviews, interviews and profiles not found in the print publication. Exclaim.ca features a news page that is constantly updated with the latest news in music and music-related culture. The site reaches 211,000 unique users every month.^[4] The website also features Exclaim! TV, which includes weekly instalments of video interviews with musicians, as well as a section titled Click Hear where readers can be guided to the latest music released on the internet. Along with music reviews, exclaim.ca includes reviews of films, DVDs, music DVDs, concerts, and video games. The magazine's website also has a section for contests where readers can enter for a chance to win various music-related prizes.

Collaborations[link]

It also publishes !earshot, a supplement that serves as the official monthly chart publication of the National Campus and Community Radio Association. !earshot publishes monthly charts in Exclaim and also publishes week Top 50 and specialty charts at www.earshot-online.com.

In February 2009, Exclaim participated with CBC Radio 3 and aux.tv to launch X3, a new collaborative cross-promotional platform which sees all three outlets air or publish feature content spotlighting a particular "Artist of the Month". These artists are featured on the cover of Exclaim's monthly issue. X3 artists of the month have included K'naan, Malajube, Thunderheist, Japandroids, Apostle of Hustle, You Say Party! We Say Die! and The Rural Alberta Advantage.^[5]

Daniel Romano is a Canadian visual artist and musician, who has released material both as a solo artist and as a member of the band Attack in Black,^[1] and also as a frequent collaborator with other musicians, including City and Colour, Julie Doiron and Frederick Squire.^[1]

Romano is also a partner in his own independent record label, You've Changed Records, along with his Attack in Black bandmate Ian Kehoe and Steve Lambke of Constantines.^[2]

He also designed the cover art for Attack in Black's first album, Marriage. He has also designed t-shirts and posters for M. Ward, Ben Kweller, Ladyhawk and City & Colour.

Romano's 2011 album Sleep Beneath the Willow was named a longlisted nominee for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize.^[3]

Thomas D'Arcy, (born 1979) is a Canadian singer and songwriter born in Guernsey, Channel Islands. He has been a member of indie rock bands The Carnations, All Systems Go!, Small Sins, Another Blue Door, The I-Spies and The Suspenders,^[1] among others.

Career[link]

D'Arcy's family immigrated to Toronto, Ontario in 1981, and in 1994, when he was 15 years old he learned to play the bass guitar. In 1995, he formed a band called Pseudonym with three other high school friends, which would later transform into The Carnations, of which D'Arcy was the lead singer and principal songwriter. They played in nightclubs they were not yet old enough to get into (due to the legal drinking age in Ontario being 19) and turned their love of bands like Weezer, Supergrass, Buzzcocks and Television into a power pop sound all their own.

In 2000, John Kastner (ex-Doughboys) saw The Carnations play a show at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern, and later invited D'arcy to join his new band, All Systems Go!, which he accepted. He also continued to play in The Carnations, as well as a band called Another Blue Door.

In 2001, D'Arcy conceived Small Sins (formerly known as The Ladies and Gentlemen) as a self-contained solo unit. A veteran of the Toronto indie scene, D'Arcy was burning out on the band dynamic's pseudo-democracy, wanting to take more of the reigns himself. As a result, D'Arcy not only sang and played nearly every instrument on the Small Sins' debut, but also wrote, produced, and recorded it almost entirely on his own.^[2] When he put together a touring band he called on four exceptional musicians - Steve Krecklo (fellow member of The Carnations) on guitar, banjo, and keyboards as well as Todor Kobakov on keyboards, Brent Follett on drums, and Kevin Hilliard on percussion and handclaps.

The Carnations called it quits, announcing on their website that they would be dissolving, in 2004. Thomas D'Arcy continues to record under the Small Sins moniker.

D'Arcy has also been a DJ at Toronto's Cloak & Dagger pub, a producer, and a student of philosophy.^[3]

Thomas D. (born Thomas Dürr, December 30, 1968 in Ditzingen close to Stuttgart, Germany) is a rapper in the German hip hop group Die Fantastischen Vier. He frequently works on solo projects.

After finishing Realschule he took on an apprenticeship as a barber. Because he frequently worked as a caretaker (German: Hausmeister), he gave himself the stage name "Hausmeister Thomas D."

He has been vegan for several years and supports the animal welfare organization PETA. In 2003, he was criticised for his approval of their exhibition Holocaust on Your Plate, which compared keeping animals in mass stocks to the crimes of the Holocaust.

He sees himself as a member of the Lohas ("Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability") movement and is fond of green ecologial initiatives. On stage he often wears T-Shirts from Fairtrade Label armedangels, all of his Merchandise items are fair traded as well.

Thomas D. is married, has one daughter and one son.

Thomas D. is a member of Die Fantastischen Vier, but was also successful with his solo albums Solo (1997), Lektionen in Demut (2001), and Kennzeichen D (2008). Singles released from these albums include Rückenwind, Frisör, Liebesbrief, and Solo (featuring Nina Hagen). Outside Germany, he is probably best known for Wish (Komm zu mir) which he performed with Franka Potente on the soundtrack of the movie Run Lola Run.

He was also the singer and songwriter of the band Son Goku, who entered the German charts with Alle für Jeden (album: Crashkurs) in 2002.

In 2010 he made the song "Million Voices (7 Seconds)" The biggest online choir from Thomas D and Telekom (T-Mobile).

In 2012, he will be the jury president of Unser Star für Baku, the German selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku.

Chuck Ragan is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. From 1993 until 2006 he was one of the lead singers for Gainesville, Florida-based punk rock band Hot Water Music. The group disbanded on good terms in 2006, and the other three members went on to form punk band The Draft, while Ragan launched a solo career playing folk music similar in tone to a former acoustic Hot Water Music side project called Rumbleseat. He has since released a series of 7-inches on No Idea Records, a live album and three studio albums on Side One Dummy Records. Hot Water Music reunited in 2007 for a tour across the United States and Europe.

Chuck Ragan, Tim Barry and Ben Nichols toured in the fall of 2008. Chuck Ragan was also a support act on Frank Turner's 2010 tour of the UK, and supported The Gaslight Anthem during their 2010 European Fall tour. Ragan was the opener on the Social Distortion west coast tour in late January and February 2011.

Ragan conceptualised the idea of the Revival Tour in 2005 and organised the first Tour in 2008. The Revival Tour is a collaborative event between musicians. The 2011 Revival Tour featured Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem, Dave Hause of The Loved Ones (American band), Dan Andriano of Alkaline Trio, and Ragan himself. ^[1]

Future projects[link]

In a February 12, 2010 interview, Chuck commented that he was working on an album with Brian Fallon, frontman for the Gaslight Anthem.^[2]

Chuck Ragan plans to release a four way split with underground UK singer-songwriters Sam Russo, Helen Chambers and Jimmy Islip at some point in 2011.

The 7-Inch Club - 2006-2007, No Idea Records (Ragan released a series of seven singles, one per month, referred to collectively as "The 7-Inch Club" and because only those who had pre-ordered the entire set ahead of time could obtain copies.) The series was also pressed on a CD entitled The Blueprint Sessions which accompanied the final mailing of the 7-Inch Club.
