Hitler's Idols - 01 : otto skorzeny
A profile of OTTO SKORZENY (12 June 1908 -- 5 July 1975), who was an SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) in the German Waffen-SS during World War II. After fighting on the Eastern Front, he commanded a rescue mission that freed the deposed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from captivity. Skorzeny was also the leader of Operation Greif, in which German soldiers were to infiltrate through enemy lines, using their opponents' uniforms and customs. At the end of the war, Skorzeny was involved with the Werwolf guerrilla movement and the ODESSA network where Skorzeny would serve as Spanish coordinator. After the 1939 invasion of Poland, Skorzeny, then working as a civil engineer, volunteered for service in the German Air Force (the Luftwaffe), but was turned down because he was considered too tall (1.92 meters (6 ft 3.6 in)) and too old (31 years in 1939) for aircrew training.[4] He then joined Hitler's bodyguard regiment, the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) as an officer-cadet. In 1940, as an SS Untersturmführer (Second Lieutenant), he impressed his superiors by designing ramps to load tanks on ships. Otto Skorzeny (* 12. Juni 1908 in Wien; † 5. Juli 1975 in Madrid) war ein österreichischer Offizier der Waffen-SS, zuletzt im Range eines SS-Obersturmbannführers der Reserve. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges leitete er mehrere Kommandounternehmen. Beim Unternehmen Eiche am Gran Sasso d'Italia wurde der abgesetzte Diktator Benito Mussolini aus der Gefangenschaft der italienischen Regierung Badoglio befreit. "The most dangerous man in Europe" In der Ardennen-Offensive, dem letzten deutschen Großangriff im Zweiten Weltkrieg, stellte er eine Panzer-Brigade auf, die in amerikanischen Uniformen hinter den alliierten Linien kämpfte und wochenlang für Aufregung im alliierten Generalstab in Paris sorgte. Man befürchtete ein Attentat Skorzenys auf General Eisenhower. Die Amerikaner bezeichneten Otto "Narbengesicht" Skorzeny als "Scarface", als "the most dangerous man in Europe", den gefährlichsten Mann Europas, und als "possibly the most mythical man in the whole war", den vielleicht am meisten mystifizierten Mann des gesamten Krieges. Freispruch im Kriegsverbrecherprozess Nach Kriegsende wurde in ganz Europa fieberhaft nach dem "Narbengesicht" gefahndet - bis er sich schließlich mit 200 seiner Männer in den Ruinen der "Alpenfestung" den amerikanischen Truppen stellte. Otto Skorzeny (June 12, 1908 July 6, 1975) was an SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) in the German Waffen-SS during World War II. Skorzeny was also the leader of Operation Greif, in which German soldiers were to infiltrate through enemy lines, using their opponents' uniforms and customs. At the end of the war, Skorzeny was part of the Werwolf guerrilla movement. In 1931 Skorzeny joined the Austrian Nazi Party and soon became a member of the Nazi SA. A charismatic figure, Skorzeny played a minor role in the Anschluss on March 12, 1938, when he saved the Austrian President Wilhelm Miklas from being shot by Austrian Nazis. The liberation of Mussolini In July 1943, he was personally selected by Hitler from among six German Air Force (Luftwaffe) and German Army (Wehrmacht Heer) special agents to lead the operation to rescue Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, who had been overthrown and imprisoned by the Italian government. On September 12, Operation Oak (Unternehmen Eiche), was carried out perfectly according to plan. Mussolini was rescued without firing a single shot. Flying out in a Storch airplane, Skorzeny escorted Mussolini to Rome and later to Berlin. The exploit earned Skorzeny fame, promotion to Major and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
