Saxmundham Station Level Crossing
Saturday June 23 2012 at 5.50. The 17.13 Ipswich to Lowestoft (18.44) train pulls into Saxmundham Station. Saxmundham is 84 miles north-east of London and has a population of 2700. Its unusual for one barrier to be much longer than its pair and there are very few warning lamp boards still with plain white borders.

1957 Saxmundham to Aldeburgh Railway line, with Flanders & Swann, the slow train
A train journey on the now closed railway line from Saxmundham to Aldeburgh. At 45 seconds you can make out the house in the clouds and windmill at Thorpeness before the trains comes into "Thorpe Halt" station for Thorpeness.Part of the line is now a walk. The Station at Aldeburgh was next to the Railway Tavern on the roundabout into Albeburgh. It was built using the white Aldeburgh brick. On its demolition some of these bricks were reused on extending existing buildings in Aldeburgh(to meet conservation area requirements). The song is "Slow train" by Flanders and Swann, a lament to the closure of the railways under Dr Beeching. Interesting observation. Not a single car parked in Park Lane! The car is a Morris Oxford Traveller en.wikipedia.org It should also be noted that the daughter of Newson Garrett a weathly local business( & himself grandson of Richard Garrett of Leiston) after much resistance became the first female doctor in the UK. Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson founded the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospital in London, and the new wing at Ipswich Hospital is named after her. She also become the first female mayor in the UK

The Saxmundham
The wreck in this video has been known and dived for many years. Often it is covered in a drift of sand which has hidden its true identity until 2010. As part of the Hants & Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology 2010 survey programme it was dived and surveyed at a particularly opportune time with good visibility and sufficient of the wreck exposed to establish some fundamental dimensions and detail that has almost certainly identified it to be the Saxmundham a british steamer which sunk as a result of a collision on 4th November 1918. The Saxmundham lies at a depth of about 40m.
