CAPE PENINSULA South Africa
CAPE PENINSULA South Africa
Cape Peninsula is located the southernmost tip of the African continent and is famous throughout the world. This area of almost 8000 hectares and coastline of around 40 kilometres is abundant with nature and where the sky adds that extra touch of inspiration. In all its natural splendor, the rocky landscape of Cape Point is one of the peninsula's main attractions. The reservation's wildlife is an active part of the scenery as it is a safe sanctuary for mountain zebra, antelope, goat and deer. Shoals of tuna, dolphin, seal and even whale, live in the raging sea and more than 160 species of bird indicate the unique quality of this natural habitat. Smitswinkel Bay is known for its Bear Baboons that consume roots, flowers, insects and also seafood. One of the Cape's more amusing inhabitants is the Klippschliefer, which is also found throughout most of Africa. The magnificent scenery of Cape Peninsula is totally captivating and leaves an indelible impression in the memory of all those who experience it.

When i was in Simons Town just outside Cape Town we went for a Baboon walk and sat with these amazing animals for several hours. It wont be long before they become extinct in that region and I felt honoured to spend time with them. They are one of only two troops left in that region. www.baboonmatters.org.za check it out!

The southern end of the Cape Peninsula boasts two points of interest really, the Cape of Good Hope and the more southernly and a bit higher situated Cape Point. The Cape of Good Hope is often thought of as being the southernmost point in Africa, and the dividing point between the Atlantic and India Oceans.

I've had this video for so many years and draw inspiration from it every now and then, especially now that I don't live in Cape Town anymore. It was created for the Cape Peninsula National Park which is now called the Table Mountain National Park, but I'm not sure who made it!

Cape Peninsula in a Sidecar
Cape Peninsula in a Sidecar
The weather god was generous and we had an absolutely clear and gorgeous day in Cape Peninsula. My guide and rider was Kevin and his vintage motorcycle was called Vicky. We rode around the periphery of the peninsula in a motorcycle sidecar. We started out of Cape Town, rode along the Atlantic seaboard, through the Table Mountain national park to Cape of Good Hope (the most south-eastern point in Africa) to Cape Point (where Indian ocean meets the Atlantic). We rode to Boulders Beach where African penguins nest and back to Cape Town along the Indian seaboard. One ride of a lifetime.

This is a really fun way to see the Cape Peninsula. Enjoy guided commentary, fabulous scenic cycling and easy hiking. Cruise through Camps Bay beach surrounded by the 12 Apostles. Visit the harbour of Hout Bay and check out the local crafts. (Optional Seal Island trip-definitely recommended). Enjoy a light breakfast snack and take in the breathtaking views along Chapman's Peak drive. See the endangered (and very entertaining) penguins at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town and end up at Cape Point for your exhilarating cycle. Enjoy a delicious picnic alongside the ocean and a leisurely stroll to the South Western most point of Africa.

Good luck to all the riders enjoy the video and please share it with fellow riders. In recent years the race has usually followed a scenic 109 km circular route from Cape Town down the Cape Peninsula and back. The start is in Hertzog Boulevard in the city centre, at Cape Town's main Civic Centre. ( We apologize for not starting the video on Hertzog Boulevard, on the day we filmed the Argus route Hertzog Boulevard was under going road works). It then follows a short section of the N2 called Settler's Way, then the M3 to Muizenberg, and then Main Road along the False Bay coast to Simon's Town and Smitswinkel Bay. The route then crosses the peninsula in a westerly direction, past the entrance to Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain National Park (within which Cape Point is situated). It then heads north along the Atlantic coast through Scarborough, Kommetjie, Noordhoek, Chapmans Peak, Hout Bay over Suikerbossie hill to Camps Bay and ends in Green Point.
