Swissed-off: Outrage as 'Minaret ban' scandal flares up
The UN human rights chief says Switzerland's minaret ban is discriminatory and puts it on a collision course with international law. This weekend Switzerland held a referendum on banning minarets on mosques. Official results from the poll show a majority support the move. It's the first time a country has voted to curb the religious practices of muslims. It was put forward by the right wing People's Party which argues that minarets are a political symbol. Muslim groups attacked the decision as anti-Islamic. RT's Gayane Chichyakyan went to investigate the case.

**MUST SEE** Minaret of Mosque being targeted by Gaddafi's men
Gaddafi's army clearly targeting a Mosque (Masjid) in Masrata Libya, the minaret taking multiple hits before finally falling (I honestly don't know how it stood that long) قصف من قوات القذافي لجامع الرحومات في مصراتة The arabic is actually Qur'an Translation: Surah 91 1. I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 2. And the moon as she follows in his wake, 3. The day when it reveals his radiance, 4. The night when it covers him over, 5. The heavens and its architecture, 6. The earth and its spreading out, 7. The soul and how it was integrated 8. And given the faculty of knowing what is disruptive and what is intrinsic to it. 9. He who nourishes it will surely be successful, 10. And he who confines it will surely come to grief. 11. The Thamud denied (the truth) in their perverseness 12. When among them the great wretch arose, 13. And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 14. But they called him a liar and hamstrung her. Inside Story - Switzerland's minaret ban- 2 Dec 09
On Sunday, 57 per cent of the Swiss population voted in favour of blocking any new minarets being built attached to mosques. Does the vote reflect a rising tide against Islam across Europe? Is it a rare departure from Swiss neutrality? And is the vote even legal in the first place?

Note: free download song for (Imad Rami)إنشوده إنه الإسلام www.almslool.com www.youtube.com Member of the Swiss Political Party that Pushed for Minaret Ban Converts to Islam: Daniel Streich was a member of the Swiss People's party (SVP), the political party that pushed the minaret ban initiative. Streich is a military instructor in the Swiss Army and a local politician in the commune of Bulle. Formerly a devout Christian, he converted to Islam and kept it a secret for two years. Daniel Streich, military instructor and, until recently, a Swiss People's Party (SVP) politician in the city of Bulle, has left the party. The reason: He converted to Islam. For two years he kept this secret from his ex-party. Now, with the "witch hunt against Islam," this situation has become unbearable for him. He was a true SVPer and Christian. He read the Bible and regularly went to church. Now Daniel Streich, military instructor and community council member, reads the Qur'an, prays five times a day and goes to a mosque. "Islam offers me logical answers to important life questions, which, in the end, I never found in Christianity," says Streich. Because he could no longer stand the "SVP's witch hunt against Islam" Streich left the part two weeks ago (around November 10, 2009) and has made his ...

Swiss voters approve ban on minarets
timesofearth.com - According to final results, 57.5 per cent of voters and a majority of cantons backed the initiative. GENEVA — Voters in Switzerland have approved a ban on the construction of minarets on mosques, official results posted by the Swiss news agency ATS have shown. Over 57 per cent of those who cast votes in Sunday's poll approved the ban while only four cantons out of 26 rejected the proposals, paving the way for a constitutional amendment to be made. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) had forced a referendum on the issue after it collected 100000 signatures within 18 months from eligible voters. The Swiss government had opposed the call for a vote, saying that a ban on minarets would hurt Switzerland's image in other countries. Supporters of the proposed ban say minarets represent the growth of an alien ideology and legal system that have no place in the Swiss democracy. "Forced marriages and other things like cemeteries separating the pure and impure - we don't have that in Switzerland, and we do not want to introduce it," Ulrich Schlueer, co-president of the Initiative Committee to ban minarets, said. "Therefore, there's no room for minarets in Switzerland." But Switzerland's Muslims have said that the referendum is fuelling anti-Islamic feeling in the country. "The initiators have achieved something everyone wanted to prevent, and that is to influence and change the relations to Muslims and their social integration in a negative way," Taner Hatipoglu, the ...

Clyde Minaret in Subwarm Temps
The mountain came in and out of view as we hiked to its base. Neither one of us said much as we crossed the mini snowfield, as we knew this was going to be a cold climb. Not to say that climbing in the cold is as bad as sitting in city traffic, but we had been hoping that this “easy” classic climb would be warm and sunny as most other Sierra climbs tend to be.... read the rest of this trip report at: www.smileysproject.com

HAGIA SOPHIA ISTANBUL
Hagia Sophia (from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Aya Sofya) is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its dedication in 360 until 1453, it served as the cathedral of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople of the Western Crusader established Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1934, when it was secularized. It was opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.[1]
The Church was dedicated to the Logos, the second person of the Holy Trinity,[2] its dedication feast taking place on December 25, the anniversary of the incarnation of the Logos in Christ.[2] Although it is sometimes referred to as Sancta Sophia (as though it were named after Saint Sophia), sophia is the phonetic spelling in Latin of the Greek word for wisdom - the full name in Greek being Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας, "Church of the Holy Wisdom of God".[3][4]
Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have "changed the history of architecture."[5] It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian and was the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site, the previous two having both been destroyed by rioters. It was designed by Isidore of Miletus, a physicist, and Anthemius of Tralles, a mathematician.[6]
The church contained a large collection of holy relics and featured, among other things, a 49 foot (15 m) silver iconostasis. It was the seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople and the religious focal point of the Eastern Orthodox Church for nearly one thousand years. It is the church in which Cardinal Humbert in 1054 excommunicated Michael I Cerularius - which is commonly considered the start of the Great Schism.
In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks under Sultan Mehmed II, who subsequently ordered the building converted into a mosque.[7] The bells, altar, iconostasis, and sacrificial vessels were removed and many of the mosaics were plastered over. Islamic features — such as the mihrab, minbar, and four minarets — were added while in the possession of the Ottomans. It remained a mosque until 1935, when it was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey.
For almost 500 years the principal mosque of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia served as a model for many other Ottoman mosques, such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque of Istanbul), the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque and the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque.

Switzerland: Debate on the Minaret Ban | European Journal
The right-wing populist Swiss People's Party (SVP) hopes to enact a building ban on minarets. In the run-up to the referendum on November 29,the SVP is campaigning with a provocative placard depicting a veiled Muslim woman in front of missile-like minarets casting a shadow on the Swiss flag. According to polls,a majority of Swiss voters oppose the ban. But the 400000 Muslims living in Switzerland are outraged by the campaign, voicing their protest in online forums. Both the Swiss government and the country's churches are criticizing the SVP's attempt and worried about the potential harm to Switzerland's international reputation.

Qutub Minar, the tallest minaret in India
Qutub Minar, the tallest minaret in India built in crimped red sandstone, is a true example of Indo-Islamic architecture. Qutub-ud-din Aibak laid the foundation of Qutub Minar in 1199 AD. Standing at 72.5 meters, it is the highest stone tower in India. Its base diameter is 14.3 meters and its top diameter is 2.7 meters. It has 379 steps leading to its top story. The lower three stories are made using red sand stone and the top two with marble and sandstone. There are other structures in Qutub Minar like Tomb of Iltutmish, Alai Minar and Quwwat-ul-Islam. Qutub Minar is one the most famous tourist destinations in Delhi, India. It is situated near Saket, Press Enclave, Select City Walk, Sainik Farms, Qutub flower market, Adchini, Mehrauli, Vasant Kunj, Chhatarpur and the Crescent at the Qutab mall.
