Palani hill temple, Thaipusam
Palani or Pazhani , a holy place near Madurai, in Tamilnadu - South India, houses one of the most sacred temples of Lord Muruga and is the third Aarupadai Veedu . Saint poet Nakkerar, in his songs in praise of Lord Senthil Andavar, places Palani in the third place amongst the six battle places ( Arupadaiveedu ) that Lord Muruga has fought to win over evil. The Other five Temples in the Arupadai Veedu sung by Nakkeerar are: 1.Tiruparamkundram Subramanya Swami Temple 2.Thiruchendur Senthil Andavar Temple 3.Swamimalai Swaminatha Swami Temple 4.Tiruthani Subramanya Swamy Temple and 5.Palamudhircholai Subramanya Swamy Temple A few Murugan devotees do consider that Marudamalai Murugan temple also deserves to be mentioned as one additional Padai Veedu. Palani Andavar is also worshipped by other names such as Dandayudhapani Swami, Kulandaivelan, Balasubrahmanyan, Shanmukhan, Devasenapati, Swaminathan, Vallimanalan, Devayanaimanalan, Kurijiandavar, Arumugan, Gnana Pandita, Saravanan, Sevar Kodiyon, etc. The temple is itself commonly known by several other names such as Tiru Avinangudi, Vayyapuri, Sithan Vazhvu, Pothini and Sivagiri. View of Palani hills
The Palani Hills are a mountain range in Tamil Nadu state of South India. The Palani Hills are an eastward extension of the Western Ghats ranges, which run parallel to the west coast of India. The Palani Hills adjoin the high Anamalai range on the west, and extend east into the plains of Tamil Nadu, covering an area of 2068 square kilometres (798 sq mi). The highest part of the range is in the southwest, and reaches 1800-2500 metres (5906-8202 feet) elevation; the eastern extension of the range is made up of hills 1000-1500 m (3281-4921 ft) high. It is also home to one of the shrines of Lord Karthikeyan or Murugan, who is worshipped as a god in Tamil Nadu. The range lies between the Cumbum Valley on the south, which is drained by the Vaigai River and its upper tributaries, and the Kongunadu region to the north. The northern slopes are drained by the Shanmukha River, Nanganji River, and Kodavanar River, which are tributaries of the Kaveri River. The range lies mostly within Dindigul district, except in the western portion, where it forms the boundary between Dindigul district and Theni district to the south. The hill station of Kodaikanal lies in the southern central portion of the range. Palani hills
Murugan, the ever-youthful champion-deity of South Asian song, legend and literature, has long been far more than His diminutive appearance suggests. Presenting the outward resemblance of a boy or a youth (or any other form that pleases Him!), Guha 'the Mysterious' repeatedly surfaces in myth, lore and legend from remote prehistory down to the present, for He always is in the 'here and now' (Tamil: ippō-ingē), within and yet beyond time and space. Although best-known today as the God of the South (ie South India and Sri Lanka), in His ancient Sanskritic aspect as KarttikeyaSkanda 'the Leaper' he was long one of India's most popular deities during the classical Gupta age and even earlier in late Vedic times. And although uncounted thousands of years old, this pan-Indian god of love, war, paradox and mystery continues to exert His charm upon millions of young and old, urban and rural, rich and poor alike even today at the dawn of a new millennium. Haulage Winch and ropecar to climb the hill To climb the hill, there are also winch trolleys in addition to the traditional route of 697 steps.

Winch for carrying passengers up the Palani Hill
For visiting Lord Murugan temple in Palani the devotees have to climb 693 steps to reach the top. Alternatively they can prefer the winch with a capacity of 36 seats. The winch is pulled up and down by a heavy duty motor planted uphill. . . It was commissioned in 1966. It is hauled up over a railway line running to a length at 290 meters, exactly from the foot at hill to the alighting point climbing the hill at an angle of 45 degrees. The travel time is only 5 minutes. Its really a unique experience Rgds, Renju

Sethukarnan's Tamilnadu Tour-Palani & Kodaikanal-9 Jan 2012.wmv
The Hill Temple of Palani is one of the most famous temples of Murugan in India. It is located in the town of Palani in the foot-hills of the Palni Hills. At its foot is the Temple of Thiru-avinan-kudi, one of the Arupadaiveedu. Going by legend, the idol of the Lord Muruga in Palani, was created and consecrated by the Sage Bhogar, one of Hinduism's eighteen great ascetics (siddhas), out of an amalgam of nine poisons or navapashanam and a shrine to Bhogar exists in the southwestern corridor of the temple. Kodaikanal, popularly known as "Princess of Hill stations" is one of Tamil Nadu's finest hill stations. It is situated 7200 feet above sea level amongst the picturesque western ghats of India in the palani hill range. The main attractions here include: Coakers Walk, Bryant park, Kodai Lake (This is a star shaped lake and walking around it during the night is one of the best walking experience you can have in your life), Green Valley View/Suicide Point- has a more than 5000 ft steep drop from this point. The monkeys are a good attraction at this point. Pillar Rocks- huge steep cliffs. Watch out for the cross at the top of the mountain hoisted by an English adventure enthusiast.
