Douglas Mawson's Antarctic Trek: Aurora Australis
Update! Check out this cool article about Mawson's trek by David Roberts in the January 2013 National Geographic ('Into the Unknown'). Roberts just finished a book on the trek called 'Alone on the Ice'. Glad Mawson's story is being told in the US! ngm.nationalgeographic.com The film is based on Douglas Mawson's incredible 1912 solo trek in Antarctica. An amazing story of how, after losing his supplies and two friends to the ice, poetry and persistence kept a starving and exhausted man walking 100 miles across the harshest place on Earth. Directed by Louie Fisher who also did sound, camera, special effects, editing, and co-wrote the script. Will Chiles wrote and performed the music, produced and co-wrote the script. ("Winter Mountain" written and performed by Inge Chiles.) We made this film over eight months in rural Wisconsin (Pepin County) for $80. "Will Chiles" "film score" "Douglas Mawson" "Antarctica" "Exploration" "Wisconsin" "Louie Fisher" "Aurora Australis" "Roald Amundsen" "Ernest Shackleton" "Robert Scott" "1912" "Poetry" "Drama" "Action" "Music"

Penguins, Ice, Douglas Mawson: Karen Barlow at TEDxCanberra 2012
ABC journalist Karen Barlow recounts her amazing adventures over two Summers as she travelled as a working journalist to the driest, most remote place on Earth: the Antarctic. Both an amazing travelogue and personal recollection of intense personal experiences, Karen's story gives us an intimate insight into the life of a working journalist as well as incredible imagery of one of the remotest, yet increasingly human-affected, places on earth.

Sir Douglas Mawson Antarctic Voyage Centenary Celebration Jan 2012
A belated ceremony has been held in Antarctica to celebrate 100 years ago since Douglas Mawson led an Australasian expedition to the frozen continent. The celebrations were delayed by several days because of bad weather, but the Aurora Australis has now made it to Mawson's huts. Antarctic historian Tom Griffiths says the landing at Commonwealth Bay in 1912 was as significant an act for a young nation as the landing at Gallipoli.
