Leonid Kharitonov & Russian Red Army Choir - The Song of the Volga Boatmen ("Эй, ухнем"). Leonid Kharitonov's channel -- www.youtube.com The Song of the Volga Boatmen is a well-known traditional Russian song collected by Mily Balakirev, and published in his book of folk songs. It is a genuine barge-haulers' shanty. The song, also called The Volga Burlak's Song, was inspired by Repin's famous painting, Burlaks on the Volga, depicting the suffering of the people in the depth of misery in Tsarist Russia. The song was popularised by Feodor Chaliapin, and has been a favourite concert piece of bass singers ever since. Glenn Miller took the song to #1 in the US charts in 1941.

Follow latest updates on twitter.com and www.facebook.com Divers have found the bodies of more than 100 people, around thirty of them children, trapped inside the pleasure cruiser Bulgaria that sank on Russia's Volga river. So far 53 people have been officially confirmed as dead from Sunday's tradegy in the republic of Tatarstan. Search and rescue teams worked throughout the night, and a recovery operation continues today. It's emerged that the pleasure boat was not licenced to carry passengers, with Russia's emergencies minister now saying that there were 208 people on board.

Here I present a Russian Traditional song, "Down the River Mother Volga". Set to music by Alexandr Sveshnikov Down the Volga, Mother Volga, over the wide sheet of water, there rises a thunderstorm, a huge thunderstorm. Nothing is to be seen in the Waves, there is only a small black ship. with glistening white sails. The oarsman have dark caps, and their belts are shiny red. Their leader is dressed up, too, in a long cloak made of black velvet. Now their leader begins to speak: "Let us sing our song, boys, let it sound down the Volga, Mother Volga, over the wide sheet of water!" Sung here by the Patriarchal Choir Moscow.

In Russia's central republic of Tatarstan, salvage teams have raised the sunken pleasure cruiser the 'Bulgaria', from the Volga river bed. It went down in minutes almost two weeks ago, drowning 114 passengers, eight are still unaccounted for. It's hoped the recovered hulk will still hold the missing bodies and may yet reveal answers to what caused Russia's worst ever boating accident.
