Colonialism in 10 Minutes: The Scramble For Africa
An excerpt from the film Uganda Rising showing in a (very!) brief overview the utter decimation of Africa that took place via colonialism and the so-called "Scramble For Africa." Despite the film's focus on Uganda, I think this excerpt sheds light on just how much of the violence that we see today actually has a colonial/European precedent rooted in exploitation and racism. It's also an instructive lead in, I think, to Darfur in 10 Minutes: An Overview of the Conflict in Sudan. Uganda Rising was produced by Alison Lawton. It was directed by Jesse James Miller and Pete McCormack (me). Jesse also edited the film, and I wrote it. For more about the film, visit www.ugandarising.com.

He was a prominent member of the Palestinian parliament-in-exile for 14 years until he quietly stepped down in 1991. In 1948, Said and his family were dispossessed from Palestine and settled in Cairo. He came to the United States to attend college and lived in New York for many years. Fela Kuti on Colonial mentality
Fela Kuti interview subtitled. I made this edit for my high school students in Los Angeles. I subtitled the video so that they would clearly understand what he is saying. I first heard Fela as a young teenager and learned a lot from his songs. In this song Fela is being Sarcastic of the Democracy (new Christianity) which Europeans (USA) use to justify their continued colonialism just as they are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. I also changed the word F--- and narrowed the image as to not show the cigarette so that I can show it in school. Thank you for all you comments

Economic Colonialism - India
Nov 1995 Cheap labour and the end of archaic restrictions have spawned a new entrepreneurial era. In Bombay's factories, thanks to foreign investment, they are finally carting away the Dickensian machinery of the British Empire. But Hindu fundamentalists denounce this as 'economic colonialism' and are as keen to expel the multinationals from India as they are to quash the minority Muslims. At a Hindu festival, extremists excite racial and religious tensions as crowds of young Hindus wheel a freshly painted effigy of Ganesh, the traditional vanquisher of foreign foes, into the Arabian sea. In the quiet village of Veldur where buffaloes loll in the waves, fishermen moan about a new site for ENRON, an American multinational. Dependent on mangoes, fish and cashew nuts, villagers dread the devastation associated with industrial development. This local discontent is one more political skirmish in the battle for India's commercial future. Despite widespread social tension, India's leaders have decided that foreign investment is indispensable. As India mobilises to catch up with the West, Veldur will become the first casualty of many. 22. Post-Colonial Criticism
Introduction to Theory of Literature (ENGL 300) In this lecture on post-colonial theory, Professor Paul Fry explores the work of Edward Said and Homi K. Bhabha. The complicated origins, definitions, and limitations of the term "post-colonial" are outlined. Elaine Showalter's theory of the phasic development of female literary identity is applied to the expression of post-colonial identities. Crucial terms such as ambivalence, hybridity, and double consciousness are explained. The relationship between Bhabha's concept of sly civility and Gates's "signifyin'" is discussed, along with the reliance of both on semiotics. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Pt 3 | One-on-one with Farish Noor
Part 3: An Exclusive Interview with Dr Farish A. Noor The March 8 which has been described as the political tsunami by many analyst provided the life line for the nation building efforts in Malaysia. In the 13th General Elections, the voting trend showed theres light at the end of the tunnel. Among the most obvious trend is voting beyond the racial line which sprung the opposition front to a record over 80 seats in Parliament. As this racial line begins to fade away, there comes a bigger obstacle for Malaysians, sectarianism. Quite succinctly put, sectarianism politics taking prominence in Malaysia. However, the truth remains to be seen how far the dominance of religious based ideologies will thrive in Malaysia. In this final part of Agendakini's exclusive interview with Dr Farish Noor, we also ask him to cite examples of other countries that have been successful in their nation-building exercises. Countries that started similarly as Malaysia during the post-colonial era and which have overcome the various hurdles of nation-building through strong political leadership. Africa's Slave Trade to Colonialism to Liberation
Africa's Slave Trade to Colonialism to Liberation / The history behind Africa's slave trade, how it started, and where in Africa it began first. African chiefs used to sell their own people in exchange for valued goods, or treasured assets. Then, when the Europeans arrived they began trading with them. The Europeans offered what they had in exchange for slaves and the slave trade became a widely known, and relevant phenomenon in most parts of the world. America and Europe needed people who could do hard labor, who could do their work for them which were rigorous tasks. Slave traders came along the African coast, which was the Sub-region (South of the Sahara) to acquire slaves. They would get them in large numbers and pack them inside the ships they came with. Then, in the 1800s the slave trade was abolished by Abraham Lincoln and then European colonialism/imperialism became the new system in which mainly the Europeans created to strengthen their nations. The necessity of raw materials, namely natural resources, led to European colonization. Also, to establish colonies which were brought up in the ways of the colonial powers, particularly Britain, France, Belgium, Portugal, Germany, among others in order to extend their influence both culturally, politically, socially, and religiously. The geographic borders one sees on the map today of Africa, were designed by the European colonial powers who wanted to divide the continent into sections whereby it would be clear who's ...

French Colonialism Must End
Quotes: "I am thankful that both the President and First Lady are still alive but brutally mutilated. I condemn, however, the use of so-called "peacekeeping" forces made up of UN and French forces in the attacks on Abidjan and the presidential palace. It is these forces that have caused countless deaths in this densely populated city of four million people." - - - - - - - "I called for a cease fire and no one responded. This was eight days ago." "I again called for an immediate cease-fire, and no one responded." "And I call on UN, French and Ouattara forces to halt immediately "death squads" roving around the streets of Abidjan "disappearing" supporters of President Gbagbo." "This killing must stop now!" - - - - - - "This is not about the Gbagbos or Cote d'Ivoire, but about the modern day return to French Colonial Imperialism. And this time with the help of the United Nations." - - - - - - - - "President Museveni of Uganda who said yesterday, prior to the capture of the Gbagbos that: 'I have not been happy with the way the UN and International Community, especially the French have responded to the events of the post election Ivory Coast. I desired that it would have been ideal for a thorough Investigation into the alleged election rigging and it be done by a credible and independent body under the African Union leadership and guidance instead of violently forcing Laurent Gbagbo out of power without a hearing. Colonialism in 10 mins; Uganda Rising
Uganda Rising is a new documentary African history for well over a century has been largely written in terms of war, domination, brutality and plunder, by both external and internal forces. Many of these problems were put in place or exacerbated by colonialism in the late 1800s. Uganda, made a protectorate of the British Empire in 1894, was no exception. Britains divide- and- rule policies exploited traditional differences between the many unique cultures. With independence in 1962, corrupt governments and foreign manipulation increased tensions, in particular between the north and the south. The brutal regimes of Milton Obote and Idi Amin proved pathological, and caused untold misery and death for hundreds of thousands of Ugandans. The arrival of rebel leader Yoweri Museveni as president of Uganda in 1986 ushered in new hope. He was supported by the west, and hailed as the bright light of a new breed of African leaders. Economic initiatives were praised, his HIV education policies were universally applauded, and in 2005 the International Monetary Fund (IMF) put Uganda, in their own words, at the forefront of its class. But Western praise notwithstanding, all is not well in Uganda. For two decades a war between Musevenis government forces and a rebel group known as the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) has devastated Northern Uganda, and in particular the Acholi people. Through inhumane terror, the LRA has abducted over twenty-five thousand children, often forcing them to ...
