Counting the Cost - The tourism business
This week we are going to take you on holiday on Counting the Cost. Tourism is the biggest service industry in the world and we are right in the middle of peak season. Between May and August - summer in the Northern Hemisphere - some 415 million tourists are expected to travel on their holidays. The top five destinations last year, in terms of number of visitors were Italy with 46 million, Spain with 56,7 million, China with 57,6 million, and the US was second with over 62 million, and at the top of the list is France with 79,5 million visitors. Down the other end of the scale though, the Middle East and North Africa took a massive hit because of the Arab Spring - losing about five million tourists last year. But we are going to focus on Egypt where there are signs of a recovery. The number of tourists jumped 29 per cent between January and May this year compared to the same period a year ago, when the revolution was still dominating the headlines. Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland looks at some of the efforts being made to bring tourists back to Egypt. We also look at toursim in the Philippines, and how that ongoing dispute over the South China Sea is keeping Chinese tourists away. And of course London - the Olympics are in town and there is a packet to be made, but why are these people leaving their homes during the Games?

The New Amsterdam? Pot Tourism in Colorado
"Entrepreneurs looking to profit from Colorado's legalization of recreational pot use are praising proposed rules that could encourage marijuana tourism. The task force drawing up regulations to govern the marijuana law recommended late Tuesday that state legislators shouldn't require those purchasing pot to be residents. Reflecting some concerns however, the task force recommended that tourists should be able to purchase only small amounts of marijuana and suggested potentially putting up notices at stores and airports warning travelers not to take marijuana out of the state."* Colorado has approved pot tourism, meaning even people who don't live in the state can smoke marijuana legally. How much will this help the state economy, and what are the new rules? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down. *Read more from Wall Street Journal: online.wsj.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing www.youtube.com Like Us on Facebook: www.facebook.com Follow Us on Twitter: www.twitter.com Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com

Amateur Video Captures Tourist Balloon Crashing In Egypt
The moment when a hot air balloon crashed on Tuesday (February 126) near the ancient Egyptian town of Luxor after a mid-air gas explosion was captured on video by a passenger in another balloon. At least 19 people were killed when the balloon came down in farmland a few kilometres (miles) from the Valley of the Kings and pharaonic temples popular with tourists. In the footage smoke can be seen pouring from the balloon before it deflates and the basket crashes to earth. One Egyptian was killed, Health Minister Mohamed Mostafa Hamed told Reuters, listing the other victims as tourists from Japan, China, France, Britain and Hungary. Earlier, officials had said all the dead were foreigners. The balloon crashed on the west bank of the Nile river, where many of the area's major historical sites are located. Rescue workers gathered the dead from the field where the charred remains of the balloon, gas canisters and other pieces of wreckage landed. The deaths were caused by burns and injuries sustained in the fall, said Mohamed Mustafa, a doctor at the hospital where the injured were treated. The pilot survived by jumping from the basket, Aboud said. Transport accidents are frequent in Egypt. Dozens of children were killed in November when the bus they were on collided with a train. Accidents affecting foreign tourists are rarer, but not unusual. Five Germans were killed in December in a bus crash near a Red Sea resort. Hot air ballooning at dawn is popular with tourists, who are a ...

euronews focus - Taking the pulse of medical tourism in of South Korea
www.euronews.com South Korea has been making a huge effort over the past few years to develop medical tourism as one of its new growth industries. To make life easier for foreign visitors, information centres have been set up to offer advice and guidance to a growing number of foreign patients (mainly from Japan, China and Russia), who come to South Korea in search of all manner of medicinal marvels. "We help about 60 foreign patients per day, which means that there were more than 12000 in our first year of business. They ask for very diverse treatments, from cosmetic surgery to traditional medicine," explains Ki Rip Park, from a Medical Tourism Information Centre in Busan. In Seoul, business at the Jaseng Hospital of Eastern Medicine is booming. It specialises in non-surgical spine treatments and has an international clinic to accommodate its foreign patients, with translators on hand to help out. Naoko, from Japan, suffers from severe back pain and has become a regular here. She gets Chuna therapy, as well as a mixture of electric stimulation acupuncture and herbal medication. Naoko Kawaragi, a medical tourist told euronews: "Sometimes I cannot walk, I cannot stand, I cannot stretch. I started coming here two years ago. Now I come here every three months and I stay for three days. Before I couldn't even walk." Treatments combine old and new - East and West - a medical fusion that allows new treatments to develop, attracting an increasing number of Westerners along the ...

Hot Air Balloon Crash Kills 19 Tourists Near Luxor in Egypt (26.02.2013)
A hot air balloon has crashed near the ancient Egyptian city of Luxor, killing at least 18 foreign tourists and critically injuring two Britons. Officials said the balloon, which was carrying 21 people and flying at 1000ft, caught fire and exploded during a trip at sunrise. The casualties are believed to include British, French and Japanese nationals as well as nine tourists from Hong Kong. The balloon was believed to have hit a mobile phone transmission tower near the banks of the Nile. Egypt's tourism industry has suffered a sharp downturn in visitor numbers since the 2011 uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak, with two years of political instability scaring off foreign tourists.
