AQWorlds Temporary Shop - Brazilian Independence Day 9-7-10
From the DNS post: I've really got to hand it to Brazil, they know how to pull our strings. Lots of people have asked to have things put in the game, everything from adding their personal armors to adding flags for their country, but we have never seen such an amazingly polite, calm and organized movement from so many of our players. You may not know this but Brazil is in one of the top 5 countires that play AQW. We have so many Brazilian plyers that I've considered trying to learn Portuguese (the official language of Brazil) just so I could talk to them in their own language! I'm not sure which players started it but we have gotten phone calls, letters, tweets, and every other communication possible asking that we recognize Brazil in the game. I don't want to give you the wrong idea. This wasn't spam. We weren't being harrassed (like the Green Star Sword fiasco). These were simple polite requests coming from literally thousands of individual Brazilian AQW players. Today is Brazilian Independence day and we decided to say obridago Brasil (Thanks, Brazil!) By adding the Obrigado Brasil shop to Battleon with a sword, set of daggers and horned helm inspired by the national colors and standard of that country.

Brazil's Independence Day celebration at National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa - 2008
* Thanks to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa for this great celebration * Brazil boasts of many unique attributes, including having had an empire, a reigning monarch and a relatively bloodless independence from Portugal on September 7, 1822, after receiving orders from the Portuguese parliament limiting his powers in Brazil, Pedro declared Brazils independence near the Ipiranga River in São Paulo. Tearing the Portuguese blue and white insignia from his uniform, Pedro drew his sword, and swore: "By my blood, by my honor, and by God: I will make Brazil free." Their motto, he said, would be Independência ou Morte, Independence or Death! This statement is known as the Grito do Ipiranga.

Brazil pioneers energy independence with ethanol
For years now — and throughout this years US presidential campaign — Americans have been debating how to achieve energy independence. Brazil is the second largest producer of ethanol after the US, which uses corn rather than sugarcane. Even though the global financial crisis has hit the Brazilian ethanol industry hard, global demand for sugarcane-based ethanol is growing. Brazil expects to harvest 12 percent more cane than last year and plans to increase exports by 25 percent. Correspondent Edie Magnus and Producer Bryan Myers report from Brazil, where ethanol has transformed the countrys transportation. For more on worldwide use of ethanol and other fuel, see our map on global energy. See blogger reactions to ethanol use and learn more: worldfocus.org

Public Domain (Domínio Público) - English Subtitles
We started filming this documentary independently over one year ago with very little funding, which we obtained by throwing a party. The crew waived their salary and we received equipment free of charge. During this period we roamed through the communities of Vidigal, Vila Autódromo, Providência, the port region of Rio and the surroundings of the Maracanã stadium, collecting images, interviewing residents, participating in their meetings, debates and conflicts. These communities have been recognized as some of the most affected by real estate speculation, a phenomenon in which housing prices are increasing due to preparation for the major world events to be hosted in Rio: the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016. As a result of the rising prices, Rio residents, primarily the poorest residents are being forced to move to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and services and are dominated by heavily armed militia.
We then began to investigate were these billions of Brazilian reais directed towards the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics are being directed. It is quite clear that a large sum of this money will come from tax payers’ pockets, only to be used for the financial gain of a small group of contractors, politicians, bank owners and businessmen involved in these events. The legacy left for the benefit of the majority of the population will be minimal. And worst of all, many communities are being removed illegally in areas of great real estate interest, and the residents are relocated to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and are dominated by a heavily armed militia.
In addition, we have acquired images of UPP (Pacifying Police Unit) in Mangueira, and the Almeão Complex cable car, through our collaborators. We also interviewed professor Carlos Vainer of the Institute of Research and Urban and Regional Planning of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IPPUR/UFRJ), an expert in the field of mega events and state and federal deputies Marcelo Freixo and Romario. In the case of the latter we were obliged to visit Brasilia and took the opportunity to film the nation’s capital and the construction being done at Mané Garrincha stadium.
Do you believe change is possible, but you’re not sure how to help? Collaborate with us! The script is not complete, but together we can rewrite the end of this story. Your donation will help us produce and share this information, helping society to decide its own future. We need 90,000 reais (approximately 45,000 USD), a minimal sum to film extensively and finalize our film, publicize on the internet, and to exhibit the film in the streets, parks and communities through Cine Ataque, translated as “Film Attack,” We believe our film can create world wide awareness to these deplorable acts being committed against the Brazilian people. Together we can change this reality. Participate!!!
