Treatment applied to European captives taken in wars or raids in the present-day United States varied according to the culture of each tribe. Before the arrival of Europeans, Native American peoples all across the country had developed customs for dealing with captives. Depending on the cultural region, captives could be killed, kept alive and assimilated into the tribe, or enslaved. When Native American peoples came into contact with European settlers, they applied longstanding customary traditions for dealing with Native captives to the European newcomers. United States history, particularly in the colonial period, includes many examples of captives, and their associated treatment; the American Indian Wars and migrations of the 19th century also resulted in many captives being taken.
Captivity narratives were often written by European Americans who were ransomed or escaped from captivity.
In the eastern woodlands cultural area (roughly encompassing the eastern one-half of the United States, and the southern portion of Quebec and Ontario), cultural traditions for dealing with captives predated the arrival of Europeans, and involved either adoption or execution by torture.
Some captives were adopted into their captors' tribe. Adoption frequently involved the captive receiving the name of a deceased member of the captors' tribe, and receiving the deceased's social status (becoming a member of the family of the deceased person). Children seem to have been invariably adopted, as were teenage girls.
Those men and women who were not adopted, as well as teenage boys, would face death by ritual torture. The torture had strong sacrificial overtones, usually to the sun. Captives, especially warriors, were expected to show extreme self-control and composure during torture, singing "death songs", bragging of one's courage or deeds in battle, and otherwise showing defiance. The torture was conducted publicly in the captors' village, and the entire population (including children) watched and participated. Common torture techniques included burning the captive, which was done one hot coal at a time, rather than the Hollywood-style firewood pyres; cutting with knives, beatings with switches or sticks, and jabs from sharp sticks. Prisoners' fingernails were ripped out. Their fingers were broken, then twisted and yanked by children. Captives were made to eat pieces of their own flesh, and were scalped alive. To make the torture last longer, the Native Americans would revive captives with rest periods during which time they were given food and water. Tortures typically began on the lower limbs, then gradually spread to the arms, then the torso. The Native Americans spoke of "caressing" the prisoners gently at first, which meant that the initial tortures were designed to cause pain, but only minimal bodily harm. By these means, the execution of a captive, especially an adult male, could take several days and nights.
In contrast to the Eastern Woodlands tribes, peoples of the Northwest Coast (encompassing the coastal regions of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and southeastern Alaska), enslaved war captives. Slaves were traded and were a valuable commodity. More importantly, slaves were given as gifts during a potlatch ceremony to enhance the prestige of the gift giver. Slaves performed major economic roles in this region, and comprised a permanent social class and a significant proportion of the population.
Mary Jemison (Deh-he-wä-mis) (1743 – 9/19/1833) was an American frontierswoman who was adopted in her teens by the Seneca. When she was in her teens, she was captured in what is now Adams County, Pennsylvania, from her home along Marsh Creek. She became fully assimilated and later chose to remain a Seneca rather than return to British colonial culture.

Northwest Passage is a 26-episode half-hour adventure television series produced by Metro Goldwyn Mayer about Major Robert Rogers during the time of the French and Indian War (1756–1763). The show derived its title and the main characters Rogers, Towne, and Marriner from the 1937 novel of the same name by Kenneth Roberts, and from the 1940 MGM feature film based on the novel. The scope of the novel was much broader than that of the series, and the second half of the book included an historically based attempt by Rogers to find a water route through North America as a "passage" to the Pacific Ocean. This attempt, lending its name to the novel and used by Roberts as a metaphor for the questing human spirit, is referenced in the first episode.
One of the earlier series telecast in color, Northwest Passage aired new episodes on NBC from September 14, 1958, to March 13, 1959. Keith Larsen (1924–2006) played the lead role (originally that of Spencer Tracy in the film); Buddy Ebsen (1908–2003), later the star of CBS's The Beverly Hillbillies and Barnaby Jones, appeared as Sergeant Hunk Marriner (originally played in the film by Walter Brennan, who at the time of this series was starring in the TV series The Real McCoys), and Don Burnett co-starred as Ensign Langdon Towne (originally played by Robert Young, at the time of this series starring in Father Knows Best).[1]
Rogers formed a volunteer group, Rogers' Rangers, determined to fight with the British against the French and their Indian allies in what later became northern New York State. The series premiere entitled "Fight at the River" featured 24-year-old Denny Scott Miller as Ranger Cooper. He was later Duke Shannon on the Western Wagon Train and the military husband in NBC's Mona McCluskey.[2]

Indian Warriors: The Untold Story of the Civil War (AMAZING HISTORY DOCUMENTARY)
More than 20,000 Native Americans fought in the Civil War. The film features historical accounts of Native soldiers participating in the Civil War and interviews with descendents of Indian Civil War soldiers. In the war that tore this nation apart, its original citizens played a surprisingly large role. Learn the full truth in this illuminating program.
- Based on the scholarship of historians Thom Hatch and Lawrence Hauptman. - Interviews descendents of Indian Civil War soldiers. - A Native American wrote the final draft of Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
Few know that twenty to thirty thousand Native Americans fought in the Civil War. This program presents the largely untold story of the First Americans' role in the War Between the States.
The common view of the Civil War is very black-and-white: North vs. South, rural vs. urban, slaveholders vs. abolitionists. But, from the conflict's origins to the complicated progression of its major events, the truth is far murkier and more complex. This immensely illuminating documentary clarifies one particularly muddy but fascinating aspect of the time: how Indians reacted to and participated in the Civil War.
Discover notable Native American combatants like Ely Parker, Stand Waite, and Henry Berry Lowery. Then go beyond the scholarship and visit with descendants of Indian Civil Warrior soldiers, hearing the family lore of their ancestors' exploits. Far more than just a "White Man's Folly," learn the very personal reasons that drew these Native Americans into the fray.
How Native Americans came into service as soldiers
This compelling documentary first aired on the History Channel in May of 2007. The film describes the milieu in which Native Americans came into service as soldiers during the Civil War. The documentary chronicles the lives of three warriors:
Union Civil War General Ely Parker, who was from the Seneca Tribe.
- Ely Parker, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's military secretary and a Union Civil War general - Stand Watie, a Cherokee leader who sided with the Confederacy and became a Confederate general - Henry Berry Lowery, who helped his tribe survive starvation at the end of the war by stealing food and goods from wealthy Southern planters, which he shared with both Whites and Indians
An interesting endnote to the documentary is that although Native Americans were used by both the Union and the Confederacy during the war, afterwards they were seen, not as allies, but as obstacles to progress.

http://democracynow.org - In a year that saw the brutal televised beheading of Western journalists and aid workers by the Islamic State, the United States is facing calls to change a hostage policy that may have undermined chances to save their lives. Journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, as well as aid worker Peter Kassig, were all beheaded after being kidnapped by ISIS in Syria. Luke Somers, a photojournalist, was killed in Yemen this month during a failed U.S. rescue mission. Family members of the hostages have criticized U.S. government policy of refusing to engage with their captors, including the payment of ransom. Meanwhile, at least 15 hostages also kidnapped by ISIS in Syria have walked free. That's because their governments — all but one European — have negotiated and paid millions of dollars to win their release. But not only does the United States refuse to negotiate or pay ransoms to captors, it has threatened the hostages' families with prosecution if they try to do so on their own. We host a roundtable discussion with three guests: Philip Balboni, president and CEO of GlobalPost, where Foley was a freelance reporter when he was taken hostage in 2012; Gary Noesner, former chief of the FBI's Crisis Negotiation Unit; and Sarah Shourd, who was was held prisoner by Iran for 410 days before ultimately being released in a deal brokered by Oman.

War with American Indians || Documentary HD 2015.
The American Indian Wars, or Indian Wars, were the multiple conflicts between American settlers or the United States government and the native peoples of North America from the time of earliest colonial settlement until 1890. In some cases, wars resulted from conflicts and competition for resources between the European colonists and Native Americans. There was population pressure as settlers expanded their territory, generally pushing indigenous people northward and westward. But, warfare and raiding also took place as a result of wars between European powers; in North America, they enlisted their Native American allies to help them conduct warfare against each other's settlements.
Many conflicts were local, involving disputes over land use, and
some entailed cycles of reprisal. Particularly in later years, conflicts were spurred by ideologies such as Manifest Destiny, which held that the United States was destined to expand from coast to coast on the North American continent. In the 1830s, the United States had a policy of Indian removal east of the Mississippi River, which was a planned, large-scale removal of indigenous peoples from the areas where Europeans were settling. Particularly in the years leading up to Congressional passage of the related act, there was armed conflict between settlers and Native Americans; some removal was achieved through sale or exchange of territory through treaties. The Census Bureau in 1894 counted over 40 wars, which killed 19,000 whites and about 60,000 Indians.

The 100-day-old hostage crisis in Kashmir has highlighted the issue of independence in the region, raising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
Four Western hostages - including American Donald Hutchings - are being held captive by Kashmiri militants who are demanding the Indian government releases 15 jailed separatists.
India accuses Pakistan of supporting the militants. But in an interview with APTV, Pakistan's Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto denied the accusations.
Pakistanis call this region "Azad" or "free Kashmir" - unlike the Indian administered part of Kashmir which lies across these mountains.
Pakistanis and Indians are bitterly divided by religion and an ongoing dispute over Kashmir in the Himalayan mountains.
The two countries have fought three wars in the last fifty years - two of them over the disputed territory.
Fundamentalist Pakistani groups such as Jamat-e-Islami openly support Kashmiri separatists in India. And there's no shortage of volunteers to fight a jihad or holy war against India.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
They think that this is their obligation, this is their duty as a Kashmiri, as a Pakistani, to assist their brothers. This is their religious duty also. (Question off-camera: Because this is a jihad?) Because this is a jihad.
SUPER CAPTION: Abdur Rashid Turrabi - leader Jamat-e-Islami
Jamat-e-Islami claims there are over 50-thousand youths who are committed to the struggle to liberate Indian-administered Kashmir.
SOUNDBITE:
We are ready to fight in India. We are Muslims, it is our first mission to fight against those who are the enemies of Muslims, and India is the very greatest enemy of the Muslims.
SUPER CAPTION: Mohammed Suleman - student and Jamat-e-Islami supporter.
The long list of young men killed during fighting in Kashmir is no deterrent for the students at Jamat-e-Islami headquarters.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It is our right. It is our way of life. Jihad is our mission.
SUPER CAPTION: Aslam Gujar - student and Jamat-e-Islami supporter.
The hostage crisis has heightened cross-border tensions between Pakistan and India once again.
Four Western hostages have been held captive for over three months by the Al Faran militant group who are demanding the Indian government releases 15 jailed separatists. A fifth hostage, was killed by the kidnappers in August.
India regularly accuses Pakistan of supporting militants in Indian-administered Kashmir and providing them with weapons and training.
India also accuses Pakistan of sending militant separatists to fight in Kashmir - an accusation Pakistan denies.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's very difficult to send people across the border because, one, Pakistan doesn't permit it and number two, India has heavily mined the line of control on their side of the border. So it is actually very difficult to send anybody across the border. But the concept of Kashmir and the concept of jihad, or holy fight, is very popular in Pakistan.
SUPER CAPTION:Benazir Bhutto - Prime Minister of Pakistan.
The fight is over religion, not money. The region - beautiful though it may be - is very poor.
Kashmiri towns and cities such as Muzaffarabad are dependent on a few industries for survival. Tourism was one of them but the recent spate of kidnappings in the area has scared off all but the most adventurous.
Bhutto says India is a regional troublemaker that is fomenting violence and has called for the U-N to intervene.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We have asked for more U-N monitors on the line of control. We believe the movement in Kashmir is a Kashmiri movement, being fought by Kashmiris.
SUPER CAPTION: Benazir Bhutto - Prime Minister of Pakistan.

George and the Dragon is a British situation comedy made by ATV for the ITV network which was transmitted in four series comprising 4 series and 26 episodes between 19 November 1966 and 31 October 1968. Stars: Sidney James, Peggy Mount, John Le Mesurier
The son of a solicitor, British character actor John Le Mesurier attended public school in Dorset, England, before embarking on a career in law. However, acting was his true calling, and at age 20, with his parents' approval, he began his acting career by studying drama at the Fay Compton School of Acting, where one of his classmates was Alec Guinness. After acting school he performed in repertory until World War II, when he served as a captain in the Northwest Indian Frontier. After the war he returned to the stage and made his film debut in Death in the Hand (1948). By the late 1950s Le Mesurier had made appearances in numerous films, especially those made by the Boulting Brothers, and also on television, particularly on Hancock's Half Hour (1956). In 1968 he landed arguably his most popular role, that of sgt. Wilson in the long-running television series Dad's Army (1968). Although preferring comedy, Le Mesurier also excelled in drama, winning a BAFTA award for Best Actor of the Year in 1971 for his performance in Dennis Potter's "Traitor (1971) (TV)". In 1977, during "Dad's Army", he had become very ill, but he recovered and continued acting until his death six years later.

This is the backdrop for Rogers' Rangers, a group of volunteer Indian fighers and map makers looking for a river that would connect the east with the west, if they could survive the attacks by the French and the Indians. Lost for decades, the films of pioneering Spokane-area documentary filmmaker Robert Lee Pryor have been rediscovered. Beginning in the 1960s, Pryor created films about Chief Spokane Garry, the city of Spokane, and the development of the Spokane and Columbia rivers. "I decided to make films on Spokane," he said, "because of the lack in that area and feeling the pupils in SD81 need material on their city and its history." Students of Spokane Public Schools (District No. 81) and the public had the ability to enjoy Pryor's films for decades. However, when 16mm film projectors gave way to VHS and DVD players, Pryor's documentaries were effectively lost from view. Without a projector, no one could see Pryor's work until the Washington State University MASC (Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections) department digitized Pryor's Chief Spokane Garry film and posted it to YouTube in 2014. Since then, the documentary has attracted a couple hundred views, including a view by Eastern Washington University history professor Larry Cebula who commented: "Wow, I had no idea that this video existed!"
I saw Pryor's Chief Spokane Garry film on YouTube, and through a correspondence with the filmmaker I was able to learn about his career.
Pryor was born in Spokane in 1928 and raised in Cheney where he received his master's degree from Eastern Washington State College (now Eastern Washington University) in 1959. After a year of teaching in Oregon, he moved to Spokane in 1952 and worked for Spokane Public Schools for thirty-two years. For twenty-three of those years he served as the district's Instructional Media Coordinator, a position that allowed him to screen thousands of educational films and teach himself the art of filmmaking. Also, he said, "my long time interest in 35mm slides helped me in my composition of film scenes." Pryor shot on Kodak Ektachrome film. "My camera," he said, "was a 16mm Bell and Howell and had a good fluid drive tripod." To assemble his films, Pryor said, "I used a very simple editing with a raised back that had clips for placing film clips, a viewer and two hand-cranked reels."
Pryor said, "I don't recall anyone else making documentaries on Spokane in the 1960s." As a pioneer in the Spokane documentary film scene, Pryor produced Chief Spokane Garry: Indian of the Northwest in 1966, Spokane: The First 100 Years in 1969, The Spokane River in 1970, and Utilizing Fresh Water Resources: The Columbia River in 1971. In 1983, Pryor retired from the school district and moved to Idaho to live alongside one of his beloved film subjects: the Spokane River.
During his career, Pryor worked as writer, producer, director, camera operator, and editor. He produced films independently with his company Northwest Film Productions, and in collaboration with the Instructional Materials Service of Spokane Public Schools. He worked with film editor R. C. Horn of Crown Film Co., artist Patricia Christensen who worked in Pryor's Instructional Media department, narrator Stanley G. Witter Jr. of KREM TV and radio, photographer William J. Benish, and Alpha Cine Lab of Spokane. In the titles of his films, he gave credit to those who lent him assistance, and acknowledged a veritable who's who of Spokane institutions: Eastern Washington State Historical Society, Spokane Public Library, Washington Water Power Company, KREM television, Lincoln First Federal Savings and Loan, Washington State Historical Society, E.T. Becher, John R. Rogers High School, and Northern Pacific Railroad.
With Pryor's permission, I had his four documentary films transferred to a digital format by Jeff Tillotson at Lightpress www.lightpress.tv in Seattle in 2015. Pryor also agreed to allow me to post his films on YouTube.

Pryor's films should interest scholars because they tell the history of Spokane and are a time capsule that show what Spokane looked like when he created his films. The documentaries should also interest film students because they are a sampler of 16mm filmmaking techniques: time lapse, slow motion, night photography, macro photography, sliding shots, and traditional title art.
I am grateful to Pryor for giving me the opportunity to see his films and excited to have his permission to share them with people interested in Spokane's history and the legacy of filmmaking in the northwest.

Northwest Passage is a 26-episode half-hour adventure television series produced about Major Robert Rogers during the time of the French and Indian War (1756–1763).
He was later Duke Shannon on the Western Wagon Train and the military husband in NBC's Mona McCluskey.[2]

ʬ In 1812, a very young United States of America had its sights set on expansion to the north and the west. But the British wanted to keep its former colony tightly contained. In the balance were the lands of the Northwestern Frontier.
England's Canadian provinces wanted a buffer zone between their lands and what they perceived as a hostile United States. The native peoples who called this land their home, wanted it declared a self-governing Indian territory; an independent nation. The United States wanted to settle the frontier, as they felt they had been promised at the end of the Revolutionary War.
The frontier was a gateway to further western expansion; a Great Lakes highway to natural resources; and a military challenge to the combatants.
The War of 1812 would decide who controlled the lands of the Northwestern Frontier, and the future of a continent.
