euronews I talk - Is the European Commission just another red tape brigade in the EU?
www.euronews.com Alex Taylor "We all hate annoying bureaucracy and a mindless filling out of useless forms, whether it be on paper or on the net. Is the European Commission doing anything to reduce red tape from our daily lives or is it part of the problem? Here to answer your questions is the EU Commissioner for Inter-Institutional Relations and Administration Maroš Šefčovič. Did I pronounce your name right?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Perfect, very good, very good pronunciation." Alex Taylor: "You say Maroš....?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Cheftchovitch" Alex Taylor: "Cheftchovitch. OK right. You're ready to answer our citizens' questions?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Absolutely, yes." Alex Taylor: "First question to you from Rafael." "I want to know why the administration is so burdened with paperwork. There's so much of it in relation to the administration; unemployment, the school enrolment of children.... there's just too much! There are plenty of Municipalities, lots of jurisdictions, regional and federal and it's very difficult to understand it all here in Brussels." Alex Taylor: "We all thought that the internet was going to make things much easier, less paper and so forth. It's not the case, why?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Not always but I have to agree with our citizen here that sometimes we still have overlapping competencies, especially between the local and national level and sometimes even the European one." Alex Taylor: "Can't you do anything about that?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Yes of course. I think ...

Eurozone inflation down, interest rate cut to follow?
www.euronews.com Inflation in the eurozone fell to 2.0 percent in January down from 2.2 percent in December. It is an indication of the reluctance by Europeans to spend money as the eurozone struggles through recession During the month, the biggest rises in consumer prices were in food and energy. The figures from Eurostat give the European Central Bank room to consider a cut in interest rates in order to help stimulate the region's recovery when its policymakers meet next week. The ECB's inflation target is below but close to 2.0 percent. The Bank's Governing Council meets on March 7 and economists are divided over whether the bank will cut rates to below the current 0.75 percent. The European Commission's forecast last week that the eurozone will remain in recession this year could make a cut more likely change. "We think recent developments are enough to prompt a policy response," JP Morgan said in a report. "A cut in the main refinancing rate is not the most powerful measure the ECB could implement, but it is a step in the right direction." Inflation pressures seem to have subsided, and the Commission, the 27-nation bloc's executive, forecast the eurozone's yearly inflation at 1.8 percent in 2013. 'EU gags Iran news to silence uncomfortable voice'
The European Commission has denied it ordered a ban on Iranian state channels, saying that two providers acted independently. Previously Tehran slammed the EU for completely jamming its 19 TV and radio stations which broadcast across Europe. The ban coincides with a further tightening of sanctions against the country, mostly targeting its financial and trade sectors. Independent filmmaker and media analyst Danny Schechter thinks the EU simply doesn't want to hear a contrary point of view. Nigel Farage on the Rise of UKIP, the Fall of Europe, and the Parallels for the US
check us out on Facebook www.facebook.com Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. Nigel Farage is a UK politician with a strong US following. He has seen his own party, UKIP, grow from a fringe faction to a viable mainstream alternative. By turning his European Parliamentary position into a bully pulpit for a growing movement of euro-skeptics, he has managed to ride an alternative political wave sweeping across the Atlantic. And many of his speeches before the EU have gone viral on the internet, particularly on the financial blogosphere in the United States, making the man and his United Kingdom Independence Party a force to be reckoned with. Nigel Farage joins us in studio to discuss all this, as well as what happens behind the scenes of Europe's Parliament and give us a sneak peak at his relationship with other MEPs behind the new iron curtain! Also, the IMF said Europe's banks may need to sell as much as 4.5 trillion dollars in assets through 2013 if policy makers fall short of their pledges to curb the crisis. This is 18 percent more than previously estimated. The failure to implement fiscal tightening could force EU banks to shrink assets, according to the IMF, and this painful deleveraging might crimp growth. We talk to Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party and Member of European Parliament, about how much pain is still left in the Eurozone. We ask him if he has been surprised at all, by the resilience of Eurozone leaders in their ...

Monitor Water Privatization
WDR, German public TV broadcasted a 8 minutes video as a part of Monitor program in December, exposing the Commission's push for privatisation in Greece and Portugal, via the Troika. It features the Concessions Directive that Michel Barnier, the Commissioner of Internal market, is trying to get through the European Parliament now. Barnier contradicts himself on whether or not the Commission pushes for privatisation and he makes an interesting comment on an expert group on water issues, that he agrees is corporate-dominated. Some quotes from the video: "The most important political changes are sometimes hidden in the details. Veiled in a European regulation the European Commission tries to accomplish the project of a century. At stake is nothing less than privatisation of the water supply all over Europe. If the Commission succeeds, a public good will become an investment opportunity with prospects for billions of profit in Germany alone. It is a victory of big multinational corporations who fought a long time for this privatization. The consequences for us consumers could be tremendous". "The idea of the Commission: water licenses have to be tendered thought out the EU. But this will benefit private companies because with the dumping prices of big corporations, municipal operators can not compete". "82% of Germans want the water supply to be organized by the cities and municipalities".

'Europe on verge of economic Apartheid'
An analyst says if European central banks continue to act on behalf of bankers and wealthy institutions rather than the whole economy, Europe will soon face an 'economic Apartheid.' The European Commission says the eurozone will witness another year of recession in 2013 as the economic output is slated to decline by 0.3 percent following a 0.6-percent contraction in 2012. The European Commission said on Friday that the unemployment rate across the 17-nation bloc would also rise in 2013. The EU's winter economic forecast said that the jobless rate in the euro area would hit 12.2 percent for 2013. Press TV has conducted an interview with Brent Budowsky, a columnist from the Hill, to further discuss the issue. The program also offers the opinions of political and economic expert Chris Dorsey and Secretary General of the CIPI Foundation Paolo Raffone. euronews interview - Viviane Reding, Vice President of the European Commission: "Democracy is not an easy endeavour"
www.euronews.com Getting people in the EU to buy into the European dream, particularly in the midst of the current economic crisis is proving difficult. However, despite resistance, the EU's justice chief and Vice President of the Commission Viviane Reding believes that Europe will need the involvement of its citizens to survive. Euronews spoke to her about the European Commission's latest public consultation to do this as well as the ongoing political turmoil in Romania. Paul Hackett, euronews: Viviane Reding, Vice President of the European Commission, welcome to euronews. Thanks for joining us. I'd like to start with the four month consultation which has been launched by the European Commission. The stated aim is to find out what problems people face in the EU. You've said the feedback you get will go directly into forming policy in the next few years - but given the existential crisis facing Europe at the moment: what do you realistically hope to achieve with this initiative? Viviane Reding: Europe is our common house and it cannot be built only by politicians, who then, when they have finished the building, say, 'oh: would you like to move in?' We have to build that together with the citizens, and I think one of the problems of the past was that we never asked citizens what they think about Europe, about their common house, about their living together with other people, the five hundred million, and it is high time that we change this. euronews: Would you accept that ...

EU parliament rejects ACTA
www.euronews.com The EU parliament has overwhelmingly rejected the global anti-piracy agreement, ACTA. MEPs ditched the controversial deal fearing it threatened civil liberties. The rejection followed a failed attempt to postpone the vote despite deliberations still on-going over ACTA in the European Court of Justice. David Martin MEP said: "MEPs have understood what ACTA meant and have said to the Commission this is unacceptable. We do not support the curtailment of freedom on the internet that ACTA would involve. It is now up to the European Commission to decide if they look for another treaty or they just say that's it, finished". But while ACTA may be down, it certainly does not seem to be completely out with the European Commission threatening to revive the unpopular trade treaty. EU Commissioner for Inter-institutional Relations and Administration Maros Sefcovic said: ''The Commission will maintain its request to the European Court of Justice for an opinion on whether ACTA is compatible with the treaties and in particular with the Charter of the Fundamental Rights of the European Union." The Commission has indicated it will now speak to other countries, which have signed up to ACTA, together with the European Parliament to try to find a way forward. Urban Abstract
Urban Abstract was created by Jopsu Ramu and Timo Ramu (ex. Huhtala) - creative team and founders of Musuta Ltd. Jopsu Ramu is a young female designer and Creative Director of Musuta Ltd. Timo Ramu is her creative partner and manager of Musuta Ltd.
This digital art piece was commissioned by TV Nelonen / channel 4 Finland and it was shown as the November break bumpers on one of the biggest commercial TV channels in Finland: TV Nelonen.
Urban Abstract has been highly awarded, it has won bronze / in book award in D&Ad; awards in London, Bronze in European Design awards in Rotterdam and most recently it won a Gold Lion from design category in Cannes Lions.
Urban Abstract -piece was born in Tokyo during 2009. It consists of 40 X five second clips or it can be viewed as a one 200 second journey.
The website http://www.urban-abstract.com works as a part of the piece and creates an extra dimension for the clips shown on TV.
URBAN ABSTRACT - About the concept:
Urban Abstract is a journey across urban space that unfolds in forty, 5 second parts. The journey, in one, two and three dimensions, is a bit like abstract surfing in which the original destination is only reached after a number of seemingly random yet linked detours occur. Points , lines, planes and other abstract elements create a journey through an Urban Abstract.
The space between things is as important as intended space, perhaps creating a fourth dimension. Meaningful shapes and purposes occur in this dimension's reality as well. The concept of negative space has meaning here.
Nature plays a part as well. To be able to understand and differentiate what is urban one has understand what is nature.
The style of the shorts is fluid and, though seemingly random, stream into a cohesive whole. Perhaps watching them in a different order would be more like seeing the same journey from another point of view. The sound world is also very important -- movement in space is sensed even if watching the shorts with eyes closed. Sounds overlap, fade, come and go.
Architectural, abstract, someway minimalist and abstract with a touch of humanity.
This feeling is reached through mixing techniques such as vectors , hand drawn lines and painting.
Urban Abstract was realized in Tokyo by a team of artists, designers and animators from Finland and Japan. Urban Abstract was created by Jopsu Ramu from Musuta Ltd, a concept, art & design -studio based in Tokyo and Helsinki.
About the creators:

DIVERSIDAD : THE EXPERIENCE video music
First single of the album Diversidad Out on June 21
Free download on www.diversidad-experience.com
Diversidad is the Spanish word for diversity. In case of the same-titled musical project initiated by the European Music Office (EMO) and supported by the European Commission, it’s not an empty phrase, but a way of living, thinking and – even more importantly – creating. To celebrate the diversity of urban music, styles and culture throughout Europe is the main aim of this ambitious artistic melting pot. In the spirit of cultural exchange, 14 different artists have come together in a recording studio in Brussels to combine their different vocal stylings over an uplifiting musical background provided by premier league beatmaker Spike Miller from France.
Spike Miller’s instrumental for Diversidad’s single, The eXperience, is a state-of-the-art production which can compete against any hit single on urban radio right now. The mixture of innovative drum programming, atmospheric synth chords and attacking strings is as multifaceted as the national and cultural backgrounds of the artists that are rapping and singing on top of it. In four minutes, the listener is carried from the smooth accentuation of Spanish or Swedish over the familiar sounds of English and French to the more harsh linguistics of German, Bosnian and Croatian. »Different rivers flow together«, sings Freetown-born, but Cologne-based artist Mariama in a catchy hook that resembles current R&B; club smashers while still sounding characteristic and recognizable.
The song is the perfect summer anthem for open-minded hip-hop lovers all over Europe. Even if you don’t understand every single word or line, you are immediately captured by the transnational vibe on this superb musical piece which stands out clearly from the boring pabulum that mainstream media and music television is trying to feed the masses. The vision of the project »Diversidad« is to actively overcome language barriers and cultural stereotypes and to be a stepping stone on a way to an exchange and unification of different urban music scenes in Europe. But despite all ideological superstructure, the main focus on this project is musical quality. Being the executive producers of the project, German hip-hop artist Curse and French beatmaker Spike Miller supervised the recording and made sure every single element fits in its predetermined place.
The eXperience is only the appetizer for a whole album that was recorded during two prolific weeks in the spring of 2010 that the artists spent in a recording studio in Brussels, Belgium. 20 different artists from 12 different countries speaking 8 different languages came together to create a masterpiece that is destined to be an integral part in the Diversidad movement. The music on the album sounds as diverse as the artists involved in its creation: There's straight-forward hip-hop songs, uptempo club tracks, a reggae tune, an urban pop ballad, a song with a kind of freestyle character and lots of different musical influences to be heard. All in all, the album showcases that urban music is a melting pot of musical styles and not a prefabricated box with rigid boundaries.
The Diversidad program will also include a festival tour, a graphic art exhibition, a movie and a digital community. All of these different channels will be opened from 2010 to 2012, but right now you just need to open your ears and hearts for the first audible life sign of the »Diversidad, The eXperience«.
Artists performing on the single:
Featuring : Curse (Germany), Marcus Price (Sweden), Orelsan (France), Rival (Belgium), Luche from Co' Sang (Italy), Frenkie (Bosnia), GMBisGeryMendes (Netherlands), Valete (Portugal), Pitcho (Belgium), Nach (Spain), Mariama (Germany), MC Melodee from La Melodia (Netherlands), Remi and Shot from Elemental (Croatia),
Scratch by Cut Killer (France) / Produced by Spike Miller (France)

"What is morality in any given time or place? It is what the majority then and there happen to like, and immorality is what they dislike."
- Alfred North Whitehead, Dialogues, 30 August 1941
This documentary series is not a behind-the-scenes look at the porn industry in Prague, but the story of the people in the industry.
The stories presented in the film all question the human side of this trade. After all, for the actors and actresses who go to the set and have sex with someone they hardly know as a regular job is certainly far beyond the imagination of most of us.
This human side of this business intrigues me, although people might simply wonder if there is any human side to it. I’m more interested in why they do it instead of how do they do it. After spending over 2 years following this theme, I realized it’s nearly impossible to draw any conclusion. However, I’m trying to capture the stories that I see growing out of my close observation of the trade in the last 3 years. These stories highlight what’s happening on the other side of the cameras of the porn shooting set, where all of sudden, a certain flow mixed with the most primitive human desire and also the mysterious weakness of mankind seems to appear…

“Oil Orgy” invades Energy Summit
Activists interrupt UK-Canada talks aimed at promoting the future of tar sands oil
http://www.no-tar-sands.org/2011/10/illicit-“oil-orgy”
Tuesday October, 11th 2011
Protesters interrupted the Canada-Europe Energy Round table [1] in London today, to expose the UK government’s opposition to European legislation, which would label tar sands oil as highly polluting. The campaigners stripped down to Union Jack boxers and maple leaf underwear and covered each other with oil while kissing and groping in a provocative ‘oil orgy’ [2].
“We interrupted the Energy Round table today because the UK and Canadian governments flirtations are developing into friends with benefits. This seedy relationship puts profits for the oil industry and banks ahead of much needed legislation which will curb emissions from transport fuel in Europe,” [2] said UK Tar Sands Network campaigner Emily Coats.
Since PM Cameron’s visit to Canada last month, the UK government has been echoing the position of the Canadian government that the EU is ‘unfairly discriminating’ against the Canadian tar sands [3]. Contrary to Canada’s claims that the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) will discriminate against the tar sands, the current FQD proposal also includes values for other unconventional oil feed stocks, such as shale oil [4].
“The UK government is supporting sleazy Canadian lobbying efforts and today’s Energy summit shows just how intimate they have become to promote the tar sands industry,” said Pete the Temp, climate campaigner and performance poet ( see http://www.petethetemp.co.uk )
Despite extensive lobbying by the Canadian government over the last year, [5] last Tuesday the European Commission announced its recommendation that tar sands fuel should be assigned an accurate value in order to account for the higher emissions caused by tar sands extraction [6].
“A Canadian government body [7] proved that tar sands extraction is very filthy, yet the Harper government is increasing extraction of bitumen without full scientific knowledge of the impacts on the local environment and the global climate.” said Coats.
In the upcoming weeks the UK will continue to receive Canadian officials [8] as Canada attempts to secure the UK as an ally to stall the FQD directive, which has already received extensive support from the EU commission. The controversial UK government support for the Canadian tar sands industry has received disapproval and outrage from UK climate activists, which shall escalate as the relationship deepens.

How to speak in public
Understanding a bad speaker or mumbling delegate can be hard -- even if you share the same language. Using an interpreter could help -- but the interpreter also needs to understand the message. The European Commission's DG Interpretation has been organising training sessions for delegates and meeting chairs for several years in order to promote better communication in multilingual meetings. Participants are given the opportunity to try to interpret different qualities of speakers themselves in order to increase their awareness of How to speak in public -- with a fair chance of being understood. This clip with José Iturri, a senior Spanish interpreter at the European Commission's DG Interpretation (SCIC), gives a short introduction to our delegate awareness program (in EN). A 2012 VideoSCIC production.
