Viscount Monckton of Brenchley

Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, of Brenchley in the County of Kent, is a hereditary title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1957 for the lawyer, Conservative politician and former Minister of Defence, Sir Walter Monckton. His son, the second Viscount, was a Major-General in the British Army. As of 2013 the title is held by the latter's eldest son, the third Viscount, who succeeded in 2006. He is a journalist known for his climate change skepticism and as the creator of the Eternity puzzle.

Christopher Walter Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley (born 14 February 1952) is a British public speaker and hereditary peer. He is known for his work as a journalist, Conservative political advisor, UKIP political candidate, and for his invention of the mathematical puzzle Eternity.

Early on in his public speaking career topics centred on his mathematical puzzle and conservative politics. In recent years his public speaking has garnered attention due to his advocacy of climate change denial, and views on the European Union, and social policy.

Personal life

Monckton is the eldest son of Major-General Gilbert Monckton, 2nd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley (1915–2006), and Marianna Letitia (nee Bower), former High Sheriff of Kent, Dame of Malta (born 1929). He has three brothers, Timothy, Jonathan and Anthony, and a sister, Rosa, wife of the journalist Dominic Lawson.

Monckton was educated at Harrow School and Churchill College, Cambridge, where he received a B.A. (Classics, 1974, now M.A.), and at University College, Cardiff, where he obtained a diploma in journalism studies. In 1990, he married Juliet Mary Anne Malherbe Jensen.

Brenchley is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.

History

The name is historically derived from Branca's Leigh. The parish is located 8 miles (13 km) east of Tunbridge Wells, and 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Paddock Wood, and includes the neighbouring village of Matfield. Brenchley & Matfield CoE primary school is located in Brenchley.

Brenchley parish church is dedicated to All Saints; there is an avenue of yew trees leading up to it. The village earns some historical fame by being one of the villages that was closely involved in medieval iron making. The site of the furnace lies within the parish of Horsmonden now.
